Create Hyper-V guest instances without NIC

I have windows server 2012 R2 standard edition, i would like to create few guest instances on this . I have Hyper-v installed and configured. I created a internal virtual switch,i should be able to create multiple windows 2012R2 guest instances and they should be able to talk to each other.  I do not want to use the actual NIC ( there is a reason why i don't want to). I need some assistance in how do i configure virtual switch, like how do i set up IP addresses, and then how do i configure ip address on vm instances. Any help is highly appreciated.

Can not edit vhd, because the system thinks snapshots exist, but I disagree

Server 2008 (r1) SP2 host, running 2 Server 2008 virtual servers.

The problem child is an Exchange 2010 server, with a fixed disk size of 500gb, currently at 95% of capacity.

According to Hyper-V, no snapshots exist, None populate in the "snapshots" window, and when I navigate to the folder where Hyper-v wants to put them, none are present.

When I shutdown the server, it makes no effort to merge any existing deleted, but not yet merged snapshots.

I can't say with 100% accuracy that no snapshots have ever been taken of this virtual, but if they were it was a long time ago.

I obviously need to expand this drive, and very soon if possible. How do I find the snapshot, that the edit vhd process thinks exists, or convince it that one doesn't?

Hyper-v Guest VM Power Plan Setting (Balanced or High-Performance) ?

$

Hi all, I've got a question regarding a virtual machines' Power Plan setting. When you create a Windows Server virtual machine, the power plan setting defaults to "Balanced". I've noticed that when its set this way, you can see in Performance Monitor that  the vCPUs in the vm will "park". If you set the power plan setting to "High-Performance", vCPU parking does not happen.

Let's say I've got a six node hyper-v 2012r2 cluster with about 100 virtual machines. Would it be wise for me to set all of the virtual machines' power plan to 'High-Performance'? Any feedback about this would be much appreciated.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 Terminal Server - Login Problems, Websites with lots of active adverts..

Hi, I have an odd problem going on with my Server 2012 R2 TS....

The server is one of 9 other VM's on my Hypervisor...

The server is setup with a 20 user access licence, and I would say that the most we get in at any one time is 10 users.. It has 2 virtual CPU's and 6GB of available RAM..., and it is never taxed in any way....

My problem is when users are running IE on the TS and more specifically when they go to certain sites that pull up a lot of video type adds in the background...

The symptoms are that the server will be running fine for weeks, then a user will go to a site with Internet Explorer that has a number of adds that are being pulled down in the background.., this is an example of one of the sites that causes problems...

http://www.goodtoknow.co.uk/recipes/137601/Mushroom--leek-and-cheese-omelette

The net result is that the TS starts running very slow and no one can login to it... If I can manage to login to it, then just killing the problem users session sorts the problem, but 9 time out of 10 I cannot get in to it and neither can any one else, so all I can do it turn the VM off...., its the only way to get back in to it...

There are no errors in the server logs as nothing is going wrong..., but you cannot login to it, the login just hangs..

I would be very grateful of any advice.., I have no idea how to get round this....

Thanks

Colin

HyperV Setup, Client: cannot connect to root\cimv2 WMI Namespace

I'm trying to set up HyperV Manager (6.1.7601.17514) on a x64 Win7 machine, connecting to a 6.1.7600 server (Hyper-V core server?) The Win7 is itself a VM, freshly minted for the sole purpose of providing HV Management to the existing server. I have a physical Win7 system on which Manager is running fine, but that machine is destined for retirement soon -- so I'm trying to replace it with a Win7 VM (hosted on a Win 8.1 system.)

I'm using HVRemote 1.08 and all machines involved are in the same workgroup; i.e., no domains involved at all. I'm using the same logon credentials on the Win7 VM that I'm using on the old Win7 machine so I didn't think I'd need to add another user on the server; nevertheless after receiving the root\cimv2 error I went ahead and tried it. Got an "error" saying there was already a user by that name.

So, I'm at a loss as to how to proceed at this point. Running (from the Win7 VM)HVRemote /show /target:<servername> shows me the failure to connect to root\cimv2 namespace. Name resolution does seem to be working in both directions.

I'd appreciate any pointers on how to fix or troubleshoot this issue.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

There is a cluster of three nodes "Hyper-V Server 2012 R2» and virtual machines on it with the "Windows Server 2008 R2». I try to use "Performance Monitor" but one of the VM always displayed twice in "instances of selected object".
How I can fix it?

Sorry for Russian on screen. I have only this version of Windows.

VM in Hyper-V cannot access gateway

Hello,

I have the following setup. A Windows 2008R2 with two physical NICs with their IP addresses 192.168.2.225 and 192.168.2.226, netmask 255.255.255.0

I have a gateway to the internet 192.168.2.254. The 225 adapter has this gateway in the settings, the 226 not.

I have VM withy the IP 192.168.2.251 with netmask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.2.254.

From the physical NIC I can ping the VM. From another client on the network I can ping the VM. From the physical NIC I can ping the gateway, from the client I can ping the Gateway.

From the VM I can ping the physical NIC and I can ping the client. However, I can not ping the Gateway from the VM.

They are all in the same subnet and it should be easy but there is no connection.

The Virtual Switch I bound to the NIC 225 is external, with no other settings. So all should be transparent and it is not working.

What am I missing here?

Hyper-V: Ubuntu 15.04 Server VM not reporting an IP Address, but has network access

I'm running Hyper-V on a Windows Server 2012 R2 machine.  On this machine, I'm running an Ubuntu 15.04 x64 guest VM (as a Gen 1 machine).

I can install the machine, remote in to (it via the Hyper-V manager or PuTTy [SSH]), access the internet with it, etc., but itwill not show me the IP address it has received in the Hyper-V Manager.

I am at a complete loss here.  What am I missing?  My understanding is that Ubuntu Server 14.04+ already have all of the required modules and drivers required to report this information back to the Hyper-V manager.

Convert Dynamic VHDX to Differencing Disk

Hello,

I have got around 6 VMs configured on Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V, that are all configured as separate Dynamically expanding VHDXs.

Is it possible to convert these 6 hard drives into a differencing disk scenario to try and conserve disk space?

Or would I have to recreate all of the virtual machines?

Peter

How to make Hyper-V External Switch using WiFi?

I am trying to create an External switch using Virtual Switch Manager. I have Qualcomm Atheros WiFi adapter and when I select it from the list to create external switch, I get the following error:

Failed while adding virtual Ethernet switch connections. bind failed: Catastrophic failure

I want to make an External connection so my guest operating system also connects to WiFi directly and get an IP from DHCP like host operating system. How do I do that?

In VMWare it just takes a few seconds to do it but in Hyper-V it looks like real pain.

Windows 8.1 - Hyper-V Virtual Switch fails to create

I'm running into a problem with creating a new virtual switch on my Windows 8.1 RTM box. Frist time attempt at Hyper-V on this system.

The error I get is as follows:

Error applying Virtual Switch Properties changes

Failed while creating virtual Ethernet switch.

switch create failed, name= 'B57B7B7B-64314AF5-AB8F-4521CBAA9FFBA', friendly name = 'New Virtual Switch': The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)

The steps I have taken to try and resolve this issue.

1. Uninstall and reinstall Hyper-V...numerous times - no change.

2. Uninstall Hyper-V, reboot, uninstall NIC, reboot, reinstall NIC, reboot, reinstall Hyper, reboot - no change.

3. Uninstall it all again. Get new NIC drivers, for ASUS Sabertooth 990FX, first gen.  Reinstall it all again - no change.

4. Updated BIOS, and check for virtualization, and DEP are enabled. - no change.

5. User powershell to create virtual switch - no change.

6. Tried resetting Hyper-V networking using the netcfg commands posted here, failed, file not found.

Any help to resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Sean

How should I configure virtual processors on Hyper-V?

$

Hi there,

When creating new virtual machines on Hyper-V (on Windows Server 2012 R2 host), each virtual machine is assigned 1 virtual processor by default. There is no Virtual Processor Configuration during the creation process, and this number can only be changedafterwards by going in to the the Settings of the virtual machine.

The servers that we are installing have quad core processors, and have multithreading enabled, giving a total of 8 logical processors. We run Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, so we normally create two virtual machines on each host. Do I need to edit the virtual machines and assign more virtual processors to each virtual machine?

I successfully passed the 74-409 Server Virtualisation exam last December and there was no mention of virtual processors at all.

J

Hi,

In server 2008, is it possible to pass a network through to a VM without affecting the host;that is, the VM is assigned an IP whereas the host isn't.

Upgrading Hyper-V (WinSer2012 -> WinSer2012R2)

$

I have been trying to upgrade our windows server 2012 installation that is running hyper-v, but have a problem with the physical nic. The issue is that upon finalising the upgrade, WinSer2012R2 presents a BSOD (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL) and the only hardware device I cannot remove prior to the upgrade is the NIC so I assume this is giving me the grief.

I have tried to remove the NIC driver, but Hyper-V depends on it (all vPcs depend on it as well as a logical switch).

How can I remove the physical NIC? Is my only option to reconfigure all vPcs to have no NIC and delete the logical switches? This is a lot of work to reconfigure and error prone as well.

I would have checked log files for the boot, but for some reason, WinSer2012R2 does not create any log entries or memory dumps for me to look at. So all I have is the above mentioned BSOD hint.

Suggestions?

How to clone a VM - duplicated SID

$

Hello,

I have been searching on the web for a guide or manual how to clone a VM in HYPER V3 (windows 2012 r2)

I have found out that it can be done via export / import or  clone or copy and pase the VM folder.

I am working in an environment with Hyper v3. We want to clone some machines that are in production in a Windows Active Directory Domain.

The most easy way would be shut down the VM. Export and import to create a new VM but what about the Computer SID, the AD account? Is there any guide with the right instructions how to complete the clone process and avoid any conflicts (like SID duplications) Is sysprep still needed?

Thanks in advance!
