Advice on settng up a HA File Server

0
0

Hi,

I'm looking to create a HA File Server on a Cluster, and I was wondering what would be the best way to approach it?

The Hyper V Cluster already has some attached disks and CSVs, so it is ready to go.

I tried adding a new role in FOCM by using the Add Role wizard and selecting File Server.

But, I didn't know what to specify for the name, and it can't see the disks when it asks to add storage.

I'm wondering what I could be doing wrong and if this is the best way to go about creating a HA File Server.

This machine will be used to share all of our company data on the LAN.

Thanks

Hyper-V failover cluster on different configurations

Hello. We have 1 HP DL380e Gen8 server, that is hyper-v host. We want to buy second server to make cluster. We are going to buy brand new HP DL380 Gen9. Question is: should the new server have the same configuration as the first server? Are any differences allowed?

Online Compact VHDx ?

Hello,

I'd like to know if is possible perform an VHDX compact action without stopping the Virtual machine. I guess that is not possible, but just to confirm.

I don't want to reduce (shrink) the size, just 'compact' the VHDX

We can't stop production virtual machines easily to perform this action...

Moving Existing VM's

Hyper-V 2012 R2 on 2012R2 core. Researching performance tuning and found this:

http://www.altaro.com/hyper-v/23-best-practices-improve-hyper-v-vm-performance/

Apparently we have broken some of these "best practices". Number 5 Avoid Storing System Files on Drives Used for Hyper-V Storage and number 6 is like it. So our VM and drives are on the physical server drive:

We have a JBOD's device that we could move the drives and VM's too. How can we correctly and safely move the drives and VM's to a separate drive?

Can't Import VM to New Host

I replaced my Hyper-V host. I've been able to import all by one of my VM's back into the new host. This one in particular I see this in the event viewer when I try to import it. It seems to point to a network issue but all the VM's network were configured the same. As far as the machine goes the only difference is that this is a Linux machine and all the others were windows.

Cannot load a virtual machine configuration: The specified network resource or device is no longer available. (0x80070037). (Virtual machine ID F78ED323-E966-4EAB-B8CC-E7342DDE74CA)

what you guys use for production vm storage?

i mean explicitly not labs / homes but something you roll in the office you don't own yourself :)

would you put into production some free solution with allowed commercial use (no eula violation! ) but with community only / limited vendor support?

what would be a game changer for you? say going freenas (free) -> truenas (paid) upgrade?

tnx!! :)

Dynamic memory allocation failure

Dear reader,

We sometimes have a problem where our windows 2012 r2 RDS virtual servers, that reside on windows 2012r2 hyper-v hosts, loose their dynamic memory and only have their startup memory left to work with. Users start complaining that things are very slow etc.

If I check several screens (RDS Broker load balancing, hyper-v manager, cluster manager and the vm's task manager) it's clear that the vm only has its startup memory allocated. I'm not sure if this happens instantly or immidiatly after the nightly reboot. To resolve the problem we have to call all users on the vm where it happens and ask them to logoff (if they are even able to), and then we reboot the machine.

I have checked the logs from the machine where the VM resides on and the logs from the vm itself. But I cannot find anything. We also have alot of windows 2008r2 vm's with dynamivc memory, but none of those have ever had this problem.

Searched the internet, but so far it seems we are only.

Can anyone give me a lead to troubleshoot this?

Replication 2012*r2

Created signed certificates using makecert, was able to apply replication to both new *hv node and existing node *hv2 using signed certificates without error. Now attempting to enable replication on VM on hv2 but continue to get following error:

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

enabling replication failed

cannot connect to replica server

hyper-v failed to enable replication for virtual machine a security error occurred (0x000002F8F)

hyper-v cannot connect to replica server ****

Verify that specified server is enabled as a replica server, allows inbound conn at port 443 and supports same authentication scheme

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

Both nodes are in workgroup mode with same user w admin rights

both nodes are able to ping by name and ip

port 443 has been open on both machines

Any ideas why I continue to get this error?

Hyperv networking nic teaming and vlans

0

I would like to bring up the topic of Hyper V networking and using nic teaming along with vlans via Windows Server 2012 R2.  I come from a Vmware shop one of our sister companies is going Hyper V so I decided to read up on it. From what I've read you have to configure vlan tags on each individual vm. So I would like to ask why can't I just create a nic team in windows than create sub teams off of that? After that go into the Hyper V switch manager and create a vswitch that's attached to the sub teams nic. That way an admin does not have to go into each vm to assign a tag to a  guest vm. I was reading that this is not recommended and you should tag each vm with the tag of your choice. I know that if you have a lot of vlans this would result in a lot of vswitches. However, if you are configuring management traffic or storage traffic than it's ok to use a sub team. So in short why is it not advised to use sub team interfaces with virtual switches?

Overallocating memory on a Hyper-V 2012R2 cluster

Is there a rule of thumb or recommendation on how much should a server be over allocated?

For example, if my host is 256GB, how much more can I go over when I use dynamic memory.

ODX on Dell MD 3XXX Storage will corrupt the VHDX

I have found that the latest version of the Dell MD Storage has ODX on by default. When using the storage migration with this turned on the VHDX files transfer instantly between the LUN's but the VHDX is corrupt and causes the Virtual Server to blue screen and then to never boot again.  I have yet to find a way to recover any data.

My current work around is to disable ODX on the array itself which means that the data is transferred by the hosts, but does not corrupt the VHDX files.

show storageArray odxsetting;

set storageArray odxEnabled=false;

Question about non-clusterd Hyper V Live migrations

0

I am just curious about something. I have two Hyper V hosts that are each using local storage.  They are identical servers except that one is running Server 2012 and one is running 2012 R2.  My question is this.  Is there a reason I can not or should not use Live Migration to move a Exchange 2010 server from one host to the other?  The Exchange server has a 60 GB C drive and an 350 GB D drive with 160 GB free.  I am curious if due to a possibly high amout of emails if that would affect the migration?  Are there any reasons to not use Live Migration between to servers each with local storage?

Virtual Machine not booting of ISO

I have a Virtual Machine: Virtual1 installed.

When I connect it does not boot into my ISO: Windows Server 2012 Datacenter.iso

It gives this error:

Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot Device.

Even though in File>Settings:

IDE Controller 1
DVD Drive: Windows Server 2012 Datacenter.iso

Is my ISO corrupt?

I do not have a DVD-ROM Player installed on my server so I can not go that route.

I also made an ISO of Windows 8.1: win81.iso just to see.

That gives the same error.

Maybe it is in my ISO making software.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Guest OS Windows 7 for remote access

We are setting up 4 VM's with Windows 7 OS for staff access on a Dell PowerEdge R320.

We had all of the VM's working as specified above but had to re-install Server 2012 Standard because the factory tech setup the Raid 5 to only give the server OS 40 GB of space.

Installed Windows Server 2012 Standard with the following Roles and Features:

  • File and Storage Services
  • Hyper-V
  • Network Policy and Access Services - Network Policy Server - Health Registration Authority
  • Web Server (IIS) - Web Server (Defaults)
  • Management Tools (Default)

We will be joining this server to a Domain Controller on another server.

This server will need to have mapped drives to a third party software database and storage file installed in it for business management.

For setup purposes the NIC1 has been disabled to reserve it for iDRAC.

The NIC2 is set to a static IP address for RDP and DOES have internet access.

An External virtual switch has been installed in Hyper-V on the NIC2 named "Virtual Switch NIC 2" All of the guset VM's have the Virtual Switch "Virtual Switch NIC 2" installed (without VLAN ID and Bandwidth Management checked).

The guest OS does show the network adpater as a device and is also set to a static IP for RDP. The networking and sharing window shows "No Internet Access" and cannot repair or resolve the issue. The Guest OS also does not see the Host files shared or the Host in Network. It displays as an unidentified network.

Please advise and thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hyper-V Replica Server Implementation

Hi,

Have created Hyper-V Replica server for most critical VM's using Windows 2012 Datacenter. Basically there are two primary servers and one replica server. Some of the VM's will be replicated through it

there are some confusions which need to be cleared

1. After Replication is completed the IP address are not configured on the Replica Server, it should be the same as Primary Server. What if the same IP address is manually assigned on VM (Replica Server)

2. During Unplanned Failover will the same IP Address is automatically assigned to VM on Replica Server

3. why is HRL or AVHD file created in the VM's folder which replication is enabled on VM

Hyper-V Massive networking interruption on host machine

Hello everyone !

I have a little game server running on an Hyper-V Linux, which is hosted on a Windows Server 2012 R2 (I only have remote access on this machine).

To play on this game server, I've to connect on the port 6666. I've made a rule that let comes TCP and UDP packets on this specific port. After that I've made a NAT that redirect UDP and TCP from this specific port to my Hyper-V Linux.

The client can successfully connect to the server, and receive/send TCP request (menu side).

But when I launch a match, clients and the server have to communicate through UDP. At this moment, I don't know what happen, my client receives nothing from the server and I lose the connection on my Remote Desktop Session too, thats quiet weird isn't it?

Do you guys, have any idea about what the hell is happening?

Thank you,

Best regards,

Configuring a Virtual Server with static IP problem - please help me

Hi,

I have a 2012 R2 server which has 1 Ethernet NIC adapter configured using a static IP (Web server).

Using Hyper-V on this dedicated server, I want to host 4 virtual servers, each with their own external static IP.

I figured I could set these up using this same NIC adapter (Shared)?

Every time I create an 'External network' in the 'Virtual Switch Manager' using this selected NIC adapter - it loses web connection and I have to switch to a KVM to reset the NIC adapter back to its original config.

I've tried enabling and disabling:
'Allow management operating system to share this network adapter'
But each results in the host server losing web connection entirely.

What am I doing wrong?

Many thanks for anything you can suggest or recommend me reading would be much appreciated.

Event Logs of VMs Migration in Failover Cluster of Hyper-V Hosts

0
0

Hello All,

We're running Failover Cluster of Hyper-V hosts of Windows Server 2012 R2. Using SCVMM 2012 R2 with UR5 for management.

If any host gets down unexpectedly (due to any reason power/bugcheck/hardware failure or what so ever), then the VMs on that host, of course, get migrated (either quick or live) to some other host within the cluster.

I want to have logs/events of this VMs migration. I want to know that which of the VMs were residing on that host at that time of failure. Of course, we can't have this info in the Cluster events is Failover Cluster Manager. I am unable to find this info anywhere. I have searched in Event Viewer --> Administrative Roles --> Hyper-V. I have searched a lot in the SCVMM, but no success.

Please help me in finding the exact location of these logs/events. I would also like to know that if the VM was quick migrated or live migrated, and to which host the VM got migrated.

I'd be highly grateful.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hasan Bin Hasib
