C0000142 error during OSD to Hyper-V VMs. Disk can not be formatted.

$

This is happening every time any VM is loaded. The server was rebuilt with Server 2012 R2 Datacenter edition.

VMs are using Generation 1 .vhdx disks. This issue occurs with IDE and SCSI controllers.

Task sequence starts but when attempting to format the disk, the disk returns 0 bytes free. This happens 100% of the time. Attempting to use diskpart to create a partition and format is about 40% successful. When it fails several errors could be returned, sometimes it seems to be losing contact with the virtual disk controller.

This is our lab server and worked great previously with Windows 2012 Standard Edition. Any help/pointers would be helpful, I'm completely lost as to why this would happen.

Hyper V file transfer kills the network

Dear All,

We have 4 Hyper V VM installations on 2 HP DL 380 G8 servers and have they are connected to HP NSA 2040 SAN Storage through 6 Gbps Fibre channel. The physical machines are clustered.

Out of the 4, 2 are Clustered Hyper V's running Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 and we have 2 Clustered Hyper V for Database server running MS SQL 2012 R2.

The issue here is that the APP servers are slow in communicating with the DB server. The Hyper V's have a dedicated 4 * 1Gbps interface cards teamed and the packets are getting timed out. But from any other machine in the subnet the communications are proper.

When ever i try to copy a file from the DB server to the APP server using SMB share it kills my network, the copy will happen but after the copy is completed the network comes backup.

Its strange scenario. APP server 2 APP server smb copy is fine, and from DB to DB smb copy is fine but cannot copy between them.

Can anyone please help?

Thanks,

Hi All,

Straight to the point.

I have virtual machines that were created in VMWARE given to me by a friend. And I only have Hyper-V and want to use Hyper V to work on these virtual machines.

Converting the VM files from .vmdk to .vhd / .vhdx isn't my problem, the problem is each of the virtual machines have multiple .vmdk files.

eg WS2K12- Windows server 2012- has like 3 .vmdk files (14gig, 8gig, 4gig) and some other files in them.

I need the whole W2K12 to be .vmdk so that I can convert it to .vhd/.vhdx with ease.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Network Drop issue

Hi Friends,

We have a scenario.

Os: Windows 2012/2012R2 running on 2 Hosts.

On top of this Hyper-v is Enabled with Clustering configuration.

On top of Hyper-v, Exchange 2010 CAS Servers are running on two VMs

On both CAS VMs,  Under Private NIC Configuration, MAC Spoofing is enabled.

On Exch CAS Servers, WNLB is configured in Unicast Mode

Issue is:

When WNLB Cluster in formed, after sometime, all other VMs running on two Hosts experience network drop issue. When we remove the WNLB Configuration, after some time, issue disappears.

Wondering, what could be the issue and any suggestion towards troubleshooting are welcome.

IOS RDP keyboard

Hello,

No matter what version of IOS RDP app iphone/ipad I cannot not use the keyboard to input the login on the hyper V VM. I can RDP into the Hyper V server and use the keyboard, but once I'm in the Hyper-V Server and double click on the VM I cannot login using the keyboard, but mouse works. The ios RDP, not matter who makes it, it used to work a year ago, but not anymore. However it works from any  windows workstations with no problem with RDP. Any idea on what's wrong? Is it the server or the app itself?

VMs failing to start (failed to lock virtual machines configuration file)

I have a Win2012 hyper-v failover cluster running in our Dev lab. It is very simple with 2 nodes and shared SMB storage on the server running the failover cluster role. a few nights ago all of the VMs on one of the nodes failed to start giving the error message: failed to lock virtual machines configuration file (unspecified error 0X800040005).

I checked the path configured on the Hyper-V node (c:\program data\Microsoft\hyper-v\virtual machines) that points to the configurations files and VHDX files on the SMB share and it was correct. I also tested that the node could access the path listed in the symlink via explorer and it could. I disabled AV to no avail and also there is no back up software running in this node. I also tried re-adding the symlink using the mklink command but this still did not get the VM to start. It reports a lock on the config file however when I go on to the server with the storage I do not see any open handles on the files.

There were no changes as far as I am aware and the only way I have found to get each server back on-line is to delete the config file which causes the VM to dissapear from the inventory and recreate using the existing VHDX file, albeit that I have to re-add the additional configurations again and that the new config file is stored on the local disk rather than the shared storage. There were no permissions changes as this would have caused issues on the second node which is working fine.

I would really like to find out what caused this and find out how I can get the rest f the VMs back on-line without having to rebuild them.

Hi,

Current Hyper -V version:  2008 R2 DC Edition

  2. So its back to normal state. We opened the Hyper-V manager console, all the Virtual machine as stated "Saved-Critical– Cannot connect to virtual machine configuration storage"Then we looked into the Event viewer below mentioned error was appear.

"The Virtual Machines configuration 4779633D-906F-4DE1-8BA7-D3EFB1508792 at 'C:\Geeserv40' is no longer accessible: The system cannot find the path specified. (0x80070003)"

Could you please any one give a solution for that issue because 15 virtual machines are affected in that Hyper-V Manager Console.

Event Logs of VMs Migration in Failover Cluster of Hyper-V Hosts

$

Hello All,

We're running Failover Cluster of Hyper-V hosts of Windows Server 2012 R2. Using SCVMM 2012 R2 with UR5 for management.

If any host gets down unexpectedly (due to any reason power/bugcheck/hardware failure or what so ever), then the VMs on that host, of course, get migrated (either quick or live) to some other host within the cluster.

I want to have logs/events of this VMs migration. I want to know that which of the VMs were residing on that host at that time of failure. Of course, we can't have this info in the Cluster events is Failover Cluster Manager. I am unable to find this info anywhere. I have searched in Event Viewer --> Administrative Roles --> Hyper-V. I have searched a lot in the SCVMM, but no success.

Please help me in finding the exact location of these logs/events. I would also like to know that if the VM was quick migrated or live migrated, and to which host the VM got migrated.

I'd be highly grateful.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hyper-V - Replica - Initial replication stopping

Hi

i have setup 2 Hyper-V host's with local storage.
network between the servers: 1gb (i monitor the traffic on the switches, and the 1gb connection is not fully utilized so bandwidth should not be a issue.)
storage 12x5tb  RAID6

host are in the same domain, and replication with Kerberos is enabled on the destination host.

I have setup replication of a big file server (18tb),  there is no changes on the file server during the initial replication.

i get these events on the source

on the destination host:

Hyper-V failed to apply changes on target for virtual machine 'SERVERA'. Possible reasons are loss of network connection with the primary, the replication was suspended or cancelled on the primary: An unexpected network error occurred. (0x8007003B). (Virtual machine ID 427D4FCC-FA8A-4245-8CCD-8CCB2FB4BE0F)

After this i have to resume replication, seems to work, but the replication have stopped 5 times, and i still have 9tb left to replicate.

Any ideas?

Online Compact VHDx ?

Hello,

I'd like to know if is possible perform an VHDX compact action without stopping the Virtual machine. I guess that is not possible, but just to confirm.

I don't want to reduce (shrink) the size, just 'compact' the VHDX

We can't stop production virtual machines easily to perform this action...

Recommended and supported Hyper-v Server configurations

I am looking for a document that will give me some suggested Hyper-v supported and recommended server configuration. Recently our company rolled out two Hyper-V servers. The host system is configured to be the Domain Controller.

One server was configured to be a Host Server Domain Controller and a virtual server Exchange server.  The Exchange server failed three times.  The host domain Controller had been put into services and was active.  I finally called Microsoft and was told this would not a supported or recommended configuration and it would continue to fail.  The technical help I had was very good and he pointed me in the right direction to building it directly on the domain controller.  Since the Exchange server had already been built and the scheme to the domain controller had been extended this was horrendous but it worked.  "Thank you Microsoft technical team."

The second Hyper-V server is setup the same the host server is the DC.  The current virtual server is a SQL server.  This seems to be working. We had some issues at first with network connections but I made some DNS entries and it seems to be stable now.  This system is to have an Exchange host added to it and I'm worried that it will have the same issues as the first server.  I would like to add it directly to the DC as I finally did the first time but I'm worried it will make the SQL server fail.

This is currently in a production environment?  Does anyone have any suggestion or can you point me to a good tech document that discusses configurations?

Thank you.

Single license of WS 2012 OLP, then downgrade to WS2008 R2 with 2003 SP2 on hyper-V VM?

$

Hi,

I'm seeking an answer, that if I purchase WS 2012 Standard OLP. Then downgrade it to 2008R2 and install into a physical server. I understand that one WS2008 R2 is ok to have one VM running Hyper-V. In my case I would like to run 2003 SP2 on hyper-V which is using Virtual Key from this single license.

My question is, do I need two licenses? Or single license is enough?

My requirement initially is, there is one apps that still need to run on WS 2003, but Dell R730 does not support WS 2003 anymore. So Hyper-V is a plain solution that I can thinking off.

Hello,

I have a request with the following:

-Take a snapshot of the DC.

-Create a virtual machine and place the snapshot in it.

The machine is the only DC on the network.

Is it advisable, to do this?

Memory allocation

Hello!

My host PC (RAM = 16 Gb) hosts two VMs, each has been allocated 6Gb of Ram. After starting VM1 host's Task Manager shows there's ~8Gb available:

Nevertheless, when I'm trying to run VM2 I get this error:

Would anybody please point me to the document stating how much memory should be available on the host after all VMs have been started?

Thank you in advance,

Michael

KB2920189 fails to install on generation 2 vm's

It looks like there is a problem with the KB2920189 update.

When trying to install it via Windows Update on some servers, they all fails the installation of this update - they are all running 2012 R2 inside generation 2 Hyper-V machines.

Has this update been tested with the UEFI implementation inside Hyper-V?

Hi

We have a HP Blade setup using 8 x ProLiant BL460c Gen8 servers and 3 par storage. All blades run windows server 2012. One of the servers powered off unexpectedly and after sending all the logs to HP we received feedback that it was a OS error.

Hyper-V Replica in a workgroup environment

$

I'm trying to set up Hyper-V Replica between two Windows 2012 R2 hosts.   They are not part of a domain, but they do belong to the same workgroup.

On the secondary host, I enabled it as a Replica server and selected Kerberos for the authentication mode.  I also selected "Allow replication from any authenticated server".  I then ran the Enable Replication wizard on the primary server and went through the wizard.  After clicking Finish, I get a "Enabling replication failed" error dialog with this message:

     Hyper-V failed to enable replication.

Hyper-V failed to authenticate using Kerberos authentication.

Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'xxx': No credentials are available in the security package (0x8009030E).

Hyper-V failed to authenticate the Replication server YYY using Kerberos authentication.  Error: No credentials are available in the security package (0x8009030E).

The one post I found that talked about this issue in a workgroup environment, http://www.chicagotech.net/win8&2012/replicaissue1.htm, suggested making sure that Everyone and Authenticated Users have permission to "Access this computer from the network" in local policies.  Did that on both machine and that didn't help.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Richard
