Physical to Virtual - IP Address Conflict

$

Hi, I have a physical 2003 R2 server that I am attempting to virtualise onto a 2008 R2 Hyper-V host. The host has its own dedicated NIC (172.16.0.17), a 2nd NIC dedicated to another 2003 guest VM (running fine with 172.16.0.9 on an virtual switch connected to an "External" network) and a 3rd NIC dedicated to the new guest VM (which will be 172.16.0.8 on another virtual switch connected to an "External" network).

I have used ShadowProtect to back up the physical server (VSS snapshot process) then restore into the new guest VM. I have succesfully used this process several times before. When you bring up the guest for the first time (after switching off the old physical server) you do it in Safe Mode with Networking so you can unhide then uninstall the old physical NIC and therefore release the IP address (172.16.0.8). You can then reboot and set the IP address of the guest's new LAN connection (with the VM Bus Network Adaptor) to the old physical server's address.

As soon as I do this I get an IP address conflict. The Event Log gives the MAC address of the old physical server's NIC but it has been switched off by this point! I am positive there is no other device on the network with this address. If I change the guest VM's address to something else the message goes away. A ping of 172.16.0.8 produces no reply (no reply on other servers as well). There is no entry in the ARP table for 172.16.0.8. If I show hidden devices in Device Manager the old physical NIC is not there. Devcon only shows the VM Bus Network Adaptor and there are no additonal adaptors in the usual registry locations.

Curiously if I change the virtual switch to "Private Virtual Machine Network" mode then set the VM guest's IP to 172.16.0.8 there is no conflict message. This implies that the address is in use somewhere on the network but I am sure it isn't.

Any ideas? Thanks,

Guy Ellingham

The most commonly used OS as VM - Is it a good idea?

The most commonly used OS as VM. Is it a good idea for locally accessed workstation? What are the user experiences?

Hello,
please is there someone who has already dealt with a similar question / problem?

For my work I always need at least two Windows OSs and one Linux. A few years ago a switched from using three computers to only one where I have virtualized systems. My primary OS was always most recent Windows and used VMware Workstation to run other systems.

I am planning new installations because there is a Windows 8 / Server 2012 and I am thinking about installation of the OS that I am using most as a virtual machine. My idea is to install Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V as the launcher of the VM with OS that I will use in 99% of the time. I will probably install on the VM also Windows Server 2012 because I prefer Windows Servers and my company will buy a license for me.

Advantages are clear:

  • The most frequently used OS can be easily moved from one hardware to another.
  • Restarts of the most frequently used OS will not kill other virtual machines.
  • Quick booting of the most frequently used OS  (I have hardware RAID card that delay booting sometimes to several minutes).

Disadvantages / problems:

  • I am not sure if I will have same user experience on the VM that will be accessed using Remote Desktop. Of course I will use new RemoteFX and I will locally access the computer so the Remote Desktop connection will be slowed by slow network but will it be the same like OS installed without virtualization?
  • I know from my experience that server that is accessed using Remote Desktop from another client that is on the physical 1 Gb network do not have desktop with same speed like when the same server is accessed locally by using keyboard and monitor that is connected directly to them.
  • In my case the network between client (Server 2012 with Hyper-V) and VM will be virtualized but is the virtualized network adapter limited for example to defined 1 Gb or is the speed unlimited?
  • I do not play games but I play videos (movies) so I am asking will it be possible in the VM without degradation of the quality?
  • Also will it be possible to use all my three monitors for that one VM?

Minor problems

  • I am not sure if I will be able to “do stuff” with hardware (for example burning optical disks) in the VM.

So what do you think? Is it good idea to have virtualized OS that I use 99 % of the time? Or should I rather choose the classic approach and install this OS to the hardware and run virtualized systems from them?

P.S. My hardware never was a problem for any installation. I do not have server kind of the computer but I have overclocked i7 and 16GB RAM and this is enough.

Thank you very much.
Have a nice day.

regarding crash kernel running in a VM at the top of Hyper-V

I am running a VM at Hyper-V Windows 2008R2, and i added crash kernel feature into this VM. But when crash kernel loading up when main kernel panics, It fails to initialise VMBUS driver, this because those enlightened driver is in hang or some other state when main kernel panics and not able to reset when crash kernel is loading up, results it fails to initialize PV drivers.

VM running with 2.6.32.X series kernel.

I just want to know how to reset  PV drivers or is there any patch regarding this?

many thanks for your reply!!

Hyper-V Replication - Failed to Enable

$

I have successfully gotten three VMs to enable replication; but on my next VM I keep getting the same error message when I try to enable replication.

"Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'IPAM': The operation timed out (0x00002EE2)."

Nothing has changed since I enabled replication for the other VMs, and I am at a loss as to why this VM is having issues.

The only odd thing I have noticed is on the DR node, Hyper-V creates the VM and creates the cluster resource role for the VM but never adds the VM to the resource role.

I have gone through the "Understanding and Troubleshooting guide for Hyper-V Replica" but that has not helped identify the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hyper-V 2012 and NIC Teaming, causes Hyper-V service to fail

I was just curious if the configuration I'm attempting is supported or not. I know that with the release of Server 2012, NIC teaming is now supported, but I’m unsure to what level once you add Hyper-V to the mix.

Basically this is what I'm attempting, i have a 1GB NIC, and 10GB NIC in my server. I then created two teams, based on the following:

1GB NIC -> Team1

     Virtual Adapter 1 = VLAN 2

     Virtual Adapter 2 = VLAN 3

     Virtual Adapter 3 = VLAN 4

10GB NIC -> Team 2

Virtual Adapter 1 = VLAN 5 (dedicated VLAN for Live Migration traffic)

Virtual Adapter 2 = Trunk (converted to VSwitch)

After setting up this two node cluster, it appears that node 1 works fine, but node 2 does not. Any VM residing on node has no network connectivity.

I've also run into another issue, in that Hyper-V and the VMM agents fail on both servers regularly, after receiving a bunch of the following warnings in the system log:

server 2012 hyper-v vSwitch performance is terrible

$

Running an HP DL380 G5 single quad core with 8GB of ram.

OS is on RAID-1 146GB 10k rpm SAS

VM's boot from EqualLogic SAN on 24 900GB 10k rpm SAS via iSCSI at 1Gb/sec (as a test lab)

Host OS is Server 2012 with hyper-v role (all updates)

Client VM's are all server 2012

I have been running bandwidth tests between VM's on the same node and have noticed that no matter what I do I cannot get the vSwitch to push more than about 2.0Gb/sec between VM's. I am using iperf as a test to generate bandwidth.

I have tried between 2 VM's, I have tried 3 VM's pushing to 1 VM, I have tried 2 to 2, but no matter how I structure the tests the overall aggregate bandwidth between all the VM's never exceeds ~2Gb/sec over the vSwitch.

Suppoesdly the vSwitch is a virtual 10Gb/sec adapter so I'm wondering why I can only push 20% of that traffic. I'm using iperf because it doesn't require disk I/O to test bandwidth because I want to eliminate the client OS or the SAN as the bottleneck.

Can anyone provide help on getting more performance out of the vSwitch?

Standalone Hyper-V is too painful to use

$

This is really a complaint not a question.  I've been using the free version of VMware ESXi for development testing for years.  I keep reading about how Hyper-V is catching up to VMware in features.  I was excited about the free stand-alone version and decided to try it out.  I downloaded the Hyper-V 2012 RC standalone version and installed it.  This thing is a trainwreck!  There is not a chance in hell that anyone will ever use this thing in scenarios like mine.  It obviously intented to be used by IT Geniuses in a domain only.  I would really like a version that I can up and running in less than half an hour like esxi.  How the heck is anyone going to evaluate it this in a reasonable manner?  I feel like it was just thrown out there so Microsoft could claim they have a free virtualization server like MS?

Steps for free ESXi.

1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.

2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.

3. After reboot, config management IP address.

4. Go back to my desk and open my web browser to Management IP and download client.

5. Install ESX client and start running VMs!

Steps for Hyper-V

1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.

2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.

3. After reboot, config management IP address.

4. Scour the internet for server tools that install the Hyper-V management snap-in for Win 7.

5. Install server management tools pack.

6. Go to add/remove and enable the Hyper-V snap-in.

7. Open Hypver-V snap-in and connect TRY to connect to box.

8. Receive generic authentication error message.

9. Spend several hours scouring the internet looking for registry hacks, firewall hacks that actually allow you to connect to a damn hyper-v box!

10. Eventually you come across the website/project. http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote

This site walks you through all the script changes/reboots you have to make to connect to bloody hyper-v!

Here is what I would prefer

I don't want to download any tools at all.  I just want a HTML5 web server on this box that allows me to do everything I can from the  Hyper-V console and doesn't make me configure anything other than a password.  It would be great if it was themed similar to the new Windows Azure Virtual Machines console.  I doesn't have to provide like a built-in viewer to actually interact with the VMs, I would be happy with a remote desktop style connection.

VHDMP event ID 3 while running Windows Server Backup (wbadmin)

Hi

I am running Hyper-V on WS2008 R2. I've applied the registry fix for FsDepends.sys as it is suggested in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2013544 but I'm still getting VHDMP enent ID 3 errors every time when I run wbadmin:

Level Date and Time Source Event ID Task Category
Error 13/03/2010 01:00:53 Microsoft-Windows-VHDMP 3 None Failed to surface VHD \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy113\VHDS\VM05-###### Hard Disk.vhd. Error status 0xC0000061.
Error 13/03/2010 01:00:41 Microsoft-Windows-VHDMP 3 None Failed to surface VHD \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy113\VHDS\VM01-###### Hard Disk.vhd. Error status 0xC0000061.
Error 13/03/2010 01:00:32 Microsoft-Windows-VHDMP 3 None Failed to surface VHD \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy113\VHDS\VM03-###### Hard Disk.vhd. Error status 0xC0000061.

The fix that registers the Hyper-V VSS writer is also applied.

VM01 is WS2008 R2 virtual machine
VM03 is WS2003 R2 SP2 virtual machine
VM05 is WS2003 SP2 virtual machine

The integration services are installed on all VMs.

The VHD drives are located on iSCSI connected Dell MD3000i array.

Does anyone have a clue what those errors mean?

Thanks.

Specify network connection to send replication data

Hi

I have two network cards in each server, one connected to our production network and the other connected to a private network between the two servers. I would like to force they hyper-v replication data through the private network. It seems when I start a replication it always sends it through the main network. Is there a way I can specify which network card, connection or ip to use?

Thanks

Multiple VMs for Services or Run on Host?

$

Hey,

I have a general question - maybe somebody might have some insight on....

I just got a new laptop and was configuring it for my development environment.  I wanted to run IIS, SQL Server, TFS, etc.

Originally, I was going to load all of these services on the host PC, but, since I'm new to VMs, etc, I have been playing around w/ Hyper V.

I was thinking about creating a separate VM for :    { IIS Web Server, SQL Server, TFS }.

Is this a recommended approach?  I'm sure they could all run OK on my host PC, but, is there any performance advantage to running each of these on their on VM?

Is this overkill or will I loose performance by doing this? (running multiple VMs vs running all services on host) ?

Thanks

Cannot Add Hyper-V Role on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Virtual Machine (VMWARE)

I am trying to install Hyper-V in a Virtual Environment and I get the error "Hyper-V cannot be installed on this computer.  The processor on this computer is not compatible with Hyper-V".  My VMWARE installation is hosted by Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.  I have enabled in the BIOS of my host machine to support Hyper-V.  So naturally I thought I would have to boot into the BIOS on the Virtual installation and change something in there but I cannot find what to change.  My hardware is def 64bit compatible.  The BIOS on the Virtual Server is Pheonix Bios.  Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?  Thank you.

Cannot access shared drive on server 2008R2 from Win7 clients

$

I have a server running 2008R2 with HyperV. The system is in a workgroup along with desktops and laptops running Win7 professional. I will be using the server to run virtual servers in a lab. I have a 500GB drive that I have shared out to other family members for local storage of music and pictures. When the shared drive was hosted on a different Win7 client the family could map to the drive and had no issues. I moved the shared drive from the old Win7 client to the server and setup each family member with a local account on the server with admin permissions. I was able to access the shared drive on everyone computer until I started to setup the virtual networks for my VM's in HyperV. Now when I try to connect or remap the drive i get a error that "The network path was not found" and when I run the windows network diagnostics it get " Make that the device or resource allows incoming connections for file and printer sharing"

I have opened everything in the firewall on the server and even turned it off but still getting the same errors. I even went into the virtual networking manager and removed the virtual network I created so now the only connection to the network is the physical NIC Am I overlooking something simple or is this a bigger issue?

Hyper V disk and RAM questions

Platform: Server 2008 R2 with HyperV with two (2) VM’s installed
VM1 – SBS 2011
VM2-Win 2008 R2

Hello there
I have noticed two problems with the SBS 2011 VM

  1. The page file is over 16gig in size. The System RAM allocated to this VM happens to be also 16gigs. The page file seems large. Is this typical of VM page file size? I can add additional RAM to the machine and increase it to 20gigs. What would be your recommendations here?
  2. The C drive with SBS 2011 has over 80 gigs of space unaccounted for when checking through folder properties. Is there a loss of space with the VHD itself that would account for this, for example fragmentation and if so, what steps if do I take to check and rectify the situation?

Many thanks in advance

One Server - 2 Virtual Machines

$

What with SBS 2011 going end of life I am trying to put together alternative solutions

So far I have the following

  • Server 2012 Essentials + Exchange online (Office 365)
  • Server 2012 Essentials + Separate Exchange 2012 server
  • Server 2012 Standard + Separate Exchange 2012 server
  • Server 2012 Standard + Exchange Online (Office 365)

Ok fairly straight forward so far....

Now comes my dilemma

For companies that don't want 2 servers or Exchange Online (Office 365), what's the best solution?

  • Server 2012 Standard (DC) + 2 Virtual Machines (1 x Exchange - 1 x File Server) ???

Your thoughts much appreciated

Many thanks

RemoteFX enabled, but no RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter

Hi,

I'm trying to run Hyper-V VDI with RemoteFX on two hardware configurations.

Both running Windows Server 2012 as host and Windows 7 as VM - All available updates are installed. Integration Services Setup Disk are installed on the VM.

I have added the Hyper-V role and made me en Virtual Windows 7 Machine

Hyper-V finds one supported physical GPU and I'm selecting it to use it with RemoteFX.

Under the Virtual Machines settings I have added RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter.

Booting the VM and nothing exiting happens, under Device Manager and Display Adapters, only Standard VGA Graphics Adapter is listed.

Tips anyone?

Regards Jostein
