How to COPY/MOVE between 2 different W2K12 R2 FAILOVER CLUSTER

$

Hello,

I'll have to perform a migration from different Cluster (From Cluster A to Cluster B)

Both cluster are quite similar and Virtual Machine migration using  SCVMM is working.

But  that migration is done through 2 different datacenters (WAN), and when migration is done we will have to virtual machines IP, etc... (but this is another battle)

The question is that we would like to perform a Virtual Machine "copy" instead of perform a Move, the reason is that we would like to have a quick way to perform a Rollback in case of problems.

Move with Move-SCVirtualMachine it's easy, but there is no 'Copy' function.

I may work using some export/import techniques and recreate the VM resource on the target Cluster, but it requires some time and specific scripting.

Does anybody have any idea suggestion about how to do it?

Thanks in advance.

C0000142 error during OSD to Hyper-V VMs. Disk can not be formatted.

This is happening every time any VM is loaded. The server was rebuilt with Server 2012 R2 Datacenter edition.

VMs are using Generation 1 .vhdx disks. This issue occurs with IDE and SCSI controllers.

Task sequence starts but when attempting to format the disk, the disk returns 0 bytes free. This happens 100% of the time. Attempting to use diskpart to create a partition and format is about 40% successful. When it fails several errors could be returned, sometimes it seems to be losing contact with the virtual disk controller.

This is our lab server and worked great previously with Windows 2012 Standard Edition. Any help/pointers would be helpful, I'm completely lost as to why this would happen.

Hi,
I have HP DL360 G9 server with Win 2012 R2 Standard has role Hyper-V. This server has integrated NIC adapter with 4 ports. Could you please to explain me why when I connect all 4 ports in local network worked only one NIC port . Network configured as DHCP Server--Switch(non-Manage)--Server (HP DL360 G9)

Thanks.

Host changing MAC of guest

Hi, this is beyond belief. The ipconfig in guest shows MAC address a, and the host has MAC address b. However, the guest reports that dhcp sent it an address that was already in use. Upon checking the log of the router, I realised that it DHCP server recieved the request from address b, which is the host's MAC. Any ideas on why this is happening? I have tried changing routers but the symptoms are still here.

hello all,

i have hyper-v failover cluster system with two hosts and 28 VMs...

ı used DPM backup program for backing up VM....

Our Enviroment:

Host OS: Win2012R2 DC
all VM run Cluster Shared Volumes on SAN

VM Os cane win2008R2E or win2012R2S

All VM has one Protection Group for DPM also  which has different Backup Time

For Example:

Saturday night DPM run  and snapped VM backup no problem.

I have interesting issue after backup  VM

after that i want to connect Disk Management Service on Host, this host is VM owner,

i did not connect VM owner but i can connect other node...

Shortly if i run DPM backup available time, backup is ok after that, VM owner disk management can be hang status "connecting to disk management"

have can i solve this issue?

Also i can restart vds service on production system?

Please inform me

Network Drop issue

Hi Friends,

We have a scenario.

Os: Windows 2012/2012R2 running on 2 Hosts.

On top of this Hyper-v is Enabled with Clustering configuration.

On top of Hyper-v, Exchange 2010 CAS Servers are running on two VMs

On both CAS VMs,  Under Private NIC Configuration, MAC Spoofing is enabled.

On Exch CAS Servers, WNLB is configured in Unicast Mode

Issue is:

When WNLB Cluster in formed, after sometime, all other VMs running on two Hosts experience network drop issue. When we remove the WNLB Configuration, after some time, issue disappears.

Wondering, what could be the issue and any suggestion towards troubleshooting are welcome.

Hi All,

Straight to the point.

I have virtual machines that were created in VMWARE given to me by a friend. And I only have Hyper-V and want to use Hyper V to work on these virtual machines.

Converting the VM files from .vmdk to .vhd / .vhdx isn't my problem, the problem is each of the virtual machines have multiple .vmdk files.

eg WS2K12- Windows server 2012- has like 3 .vmdk files (14gig, 8gig, 4gig) and some other files in them.

I need the whole W2K12 to be .vmdk so that I can convert it to .vhd/.vhdx with ease.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi all;

Is there any Powershell cmdlet to list the GUIDs of VMs?

Thanks

SCVMM and "Virtual Hard disks" directory

$

Hello,

We have noticed that Virtual Machines created using SCVMM doesn't create "Virtual Hard Disks" directory and puts the VHDX files into the Virtual Machine data root.

But if VM are created using Hyper-V defaults values this directory is created.

How can we set/define SCVMM to use also this directory?

We would like to have the same directory structure when VM are created, and the usage of "Virtual Hard disks" directory is quite clean directory sctructure.

Best Regards.

Identifying which Lun my Cluster disk is on.

I have inherited a Hyper V environment that was set up by someone who was apparently in love with the next button. All of the csv have the default name of Cluster Disk 1, Cluster Disk 2 and so on, and the folder names in c:\cluster storage are all Volume1, Volume2 and so on. There are six disks in total 4 of which are 2TBs, making it impossible to determine which lun it exists on on the Equalogic san based on size.

Is there anywhere in failover cluster manager, or anywhere else, that will tell me which csv is on which lun. The luns are all named differently in SAN HQ.

I have looked in diskpart but the LUN ID entry on detil disk all say 0. And the disk IDs don't correlate to the iscsi identifier.

Any help is appreciated

Failed Shared Nothing Migration - Element Not Found (0x80070490)

Hi Everyone

I am experiencing an error when trying to migrate a virtual machine from one cluster to another.

I have two Hyper V Clusters, OTJHBHVC01 and OTJHBHVC02, the nodes I am using are OTJHBHPV01 and OTJHBHPV05 respectively.

If I remove a virtual machine from the cluster, and attempt to migrate it to a node in the other cluster I am getting the following error:

Event ID 21024 Source: Hyper-V-VMMS

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration because the destination host rejected the request: Element not found. (0x80070490).

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to establish a connection for a Virtual Machine migration with host 'OTJHBHPV05': Element not found. (0x80070490).

Virtual machine migration operation for 'OTJHBNMS01' failed at migration source 'OTJHBHPV01'. (Virtual machine ID A1226C5A-C1F3-44EC-A5F1-F06BBE671320)

As mentioned, I remove the Virtual Machine from the cluster, In the Hyper-V MMC I then right click, select "Move" - Move the Virtual Machine, I select the destination Hyper-V host (node) not the cluster name. Select "Move the virtual machine's data to a single location" Choose a location on one of the Clustered Shared Volumes that has enough space. And proceed with the move. The migration runs till about 70% of the way of the progress bar until I receive the error.

I cant seem to upload screenshots yet, even though I have verified my Microsoft Account.

I have searched, but have been unable to find any similar posts. I have come across one post where System Center Virtual Machine Manager was involved, but we are not using SCVMM. I have tried the steps suggested in the post but they have not worked for me.

I have tried restarting the Virtual Machine Management Service, as well as restarting both Hyper V hosts, but still receive the error.

I have tried this in both directions, from any of the nodes in my cluster and still receive this error. Live Migrations within the clusters work perfectly.

All servers are members of the same domain. The user logged in performing the action is a Domain Administrator.

Both Hyper V Servers have been enabled to accept live migrations using Credential Security Support Provider, not Kerberos (We are not using remote tools)

I have also tried this on multiple Virtual Machines, all with the same result.

I am running Windows Server 2012, Datacenter edition.

Failover Cluster Validation tests report no errors or serious warnings.

We were able to do Shared nothing migrations about 2 months ago, nothing has been changed on the Cluster with exception of Windows updates and the installation of the following KB updates: KB2813630 and KB2823643. These two updates were installed to try and resolve an issue we were experiencing with iSCSI which we since resolved by switching to Fibre Channel Controllers on our storage device.

Would appreciate any help or suggestions!

Thanks

Leigh

IOS RDP keyboard

Hello,

No matter what version of IOS RDP app iphone/ipad I cannot not use the keyboard to input the login on the hyper V VM. I can RDP into the Hyper V server and use the keyboard, but once I'm in the Hyper-V Server and double click on the VM I cannot login using the keyboard, but mouse works. The ios RDP, not matter who makes it, it used to work a year ago, but not anymore. However it works from any  windows workstations with no problem with RDP. Any idea on what's wrong? Is it the server or the app itself?

Best Setup

Hyper-v 2012 R2. I am trying to understand the best configuration for our VM's. The VM's in question are RDS 2012. My question is about vCPU. This VM has 5 vCPU's and 4GB RAM (dynamic) with 80GB fixed HDD. Some technet articles say, depending on the CPU config, to use/not use dynamic memory. So i am trying to find out our best CPU config. Here is the current NUMA settings:

What is the recommended vCPU settings for a VM?

General questions to get started with virtualization server cluster.

Hello all, this is my first time posting here in the tech net forums. I am a software development student and have been spending most of my time lately in Linux.  First I would like to apologize if I am at all not complying with the forum ethics or protocol based on the fact that I am rushing to get this post in and wasn't able to do as much reading as I would normally like before posting. If my questions seem to be to noobish feel free to just tell me so.  That being said, I would appreciate some help. My systems have been down now for the better part of a month with trying to figure out, not how to configure the system I want, but rather to find a system to configure and be able to stick with it without running into issues that make me start researching a whole new system.

So for a quick explanation of what I am trying to accomplish:

I am looking to utilize the equipment I have, and put together a small virtual machine host.  The last few weeks I was working on building a Proxmox cluster which overall seemed to be pretty close to what I want, however the compatibility just isn't there yet in my eyes for a home use server.  I am trying to take basically the 5 or 6 PCs that I have already built, and configure them into a cluster that will be able to hopefully utilize as much system resource as possible.  From what I have learned in recent, this is referred to as a Beowulf cluster, or just a virtualization cluster.  So ideally I want to combine the 5-6 processors to form one "super computer" that will serve as nothing but a virtual machine host.  I am sorry if I am using the wrong terms for any of this but like I said, I am just trying to figure it all out still.  What is the best Microsoft OS to use to do this?  I am currently looking at either Server 2012 R2, but I have also looked briefly into Systems Center 2012 R2 and really like the look of this.  This is just for my personal use.  The reason I am looking to do this is that I currently use many different OSs and have many different tasks that require different configurations.  The bulk of the work I am doing, coding, 3D rendering, video editing, a lot of Autodesk and Adobe work.  Then of course I would like to be able to do some gaming still but haven't even begun to research to feasibility of gaming on a VM because of course my main priority is the work.  So is there a way that I can pull this off?  I am planning to start purchasing some server racks, like a 9 or 12U wall mount rack that I was planning on putting about 4 or 5 2U atx cases in.  Right now in my small office I have 5 fully built atx towers and then multiple laptops and tablets and chrome books and bla blah!  It is just too much so I am looking for a way to consolidate.  Also, regarding the 3D rendering, if there is a way to utilize multiple processors at once in this same config, that would be great.  I have again done some research on "render farms" which sounds similar to a Beowulf but I just need to focus in an area that I can research more thoroughly because right now I just keep jumping around every time I think I have found a better solution.  Please help!  Thank you very much to anyone who takes the time to help me with this task.  It is very much appreciated!

Guest won't start when usb isn't plugged in

Hi

I may be trying to do something that just isn't supported or maybe I'm just missing something simple. My host is running Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 and the guest is Server 2012R2 Standard

I have passed through two usb drives for backup purposes. The server only has one usb drive plugged in at any one time as the other is taken offsite. The drives are connected to a scsi controller in the guest settings.

When trying to start the guest it errors with an error and won't start until I go into the settings and remove the drive that isn't plugged in. This then requires me to reconnect the drive when they are swapped around.

Is there a setting to tell the guest to ignore missing drives on startup that I'm missing?

Why not put all VMs and replicas in the same default folder?

$

By default, VMs are stored in \hyper-v\vm and replicas are stored in \hyper-v\replica\.  So, when you failover, your new mission-critical VM is located in the replica folder.  This is confusing and its a pain to move the replica back to the default hyper-v\vm folder.

Comments and suggestions welcomed.

Using Disk2VHD to P2V a Server 2003 Machine

I'm trying to P2V a 2003 server to a Hyper-V 2012 R2 server. I've used Disk2VHD before with no issues. For some reason on this machine after I create the VHDX file and a Virtual machine and try to boot the server I get a 0x00007b blue screen. I don't have SCVMM in the environment, I'm hoping someone can point me to a solution where I can successfully P2V this server.

Is it safe to delete a checkpoint made on a VM which is a DC

Hello,

I have made some checkpoints on two domain controllers before discovering tonight that creating checkpoints on DCs is not supported.

I made the checkpoints about a month ago when the VM were running.

Is it safe to delete the checkpoints on the two VMs?

Thanks all!

Does it have any impact changing from iSCSI to FCoE with Hyper-V fail over cluster in a VDI env

$

Hi Team,

we are planning to make use of iSCSI protocol from EMC SAN storage to the UCS blade loaded with Hyper-v failover cluster based xendesktop VDI with PVS.

may be after 3-4 months later we will switch the protocol from iSCSI to FCoE in VDI environment so, does it have any impact? what i meant is not the downtime but, more related to WS 2012 R2 Hyper-v based system will work with out formatting the initial LUNs created with iSCSI protocol?
