rights needed for 3rd party backup app for exchange

Hi,

I'm running Exchange 2013 Standard on its own server 2012 Standard Hyper-v VM. The host is Windows Server 2012 Server Core (non GUI). The Exchange guest doesn't have enough free room for backups. I pointed VSS to a mapped drive on the hyper-v host as it had a lot of room. However, I'm getting an error when running a 3rd paty backup that says

"Error in accessing/creating destination location, Error: Could not find a part of the path 'R:\ExchTemp\Exchange Server(VSS)\Exch'.. Folder: ) in VSS plugin backup".

Vendor support cannot help.

The actual mapped path is R:\ExchTemp\Exchange Server(VSS)\

I am able to find it from Windows explorer.

The host is not part of the domain. It's a workgroup server.

When I try to assign full rights to Everybody for this folder through icacls on the host, I get:

E:\>icacls "E:\RemoteBackupDCTemp" /grant Everybody:(OI)(CI)F /T
Everybody: No mapping between account names and security IDs was done.
Successfully processed 0 files; Failed processing 1 files

When I check rights on the Host through Icacls I get:

E:\>icacls "E:\RemoteBackupDCTemp"
E:\RemoteBackupDCTemp KDHPHOST\Administrator:(OI)(CI)(F)
                      CREATOR OWNER:(OI)(CI)(IO)(F)
                      NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)(F)
                      BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)(F)
                      BUILTIN\Users:(OI)(CI)(F)

Successfully processed 1 files; Failed processing 0 files

I am logged on as the domain administrator and am mapped to the host as administrator.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

server 2012 R2 failed to create the virtual hard disk

Hello All.

We have recently upgraded from server 2008 to 2012 R2 but are unable to run or create any virtual machines. when creating a virtual machine we receve the following error.

The server encountered an error trying to create the virtual hard disk. A virtual disk support provider for the specified file was not found.

All that I have been able to find on the issue so far is for server 2008 which we did not have any issue with.

On going to device manager their is no virtual hard disk loopback driver. If I apply the registry fix for server 2008 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-nz/kb/2013544) the device loads on reboot but as a hidden device that is not plugged in. When trying to create a virtual machine again the driver try's to load but comes back with error 38 the device cannot load because their is one already in memory. After rebooting it is again not plugged in.

only other things installed on the server is the HP drivers and Backup Exec 2014.

Hi everyone i would like to ask how can i fill a need of mine :

i ve colocated in datacenter a server (proliant dl320 g8) running windows server 2012 r2 + the hyper v service. the colo contract provides me with 2x1gbit upstream links and 2 static ips. the upstream links are teamed (TEAM 1) into a single 2gbit upstream  and i have assigned one of the static ips. I have the need to run a virtual machine (either a windows xp pro 32 or win 8.1 or 10 tech preview as they are the only oses i have licenses for) and bridge it to TEAM 1 , so that i can fully use a 2 gbit  upstream but assign to it the second ip address. how can i achieve this ? best regards !!

VMs network speed 2

Hello!

Consider the following testing environment: there're two host machines - HOST1 and HOST2 - (Core i5, 16Gb RAM, 3 Nics, one of the nics -HV - is used for test VMs) that host one VM each (now they are "DC" and "EXCH1"). These VMs are connected by the 5-port 1Gb switch UPVEIL.

All operating systems (both for host and virtual machines) are Windows Server 2012R2.

To make sure VM1 can communicate with VM2 I run on VM1 "ping VM2 -t" - there would be NO any packet loss however many minutes/hours thisping continues.

When any action starts that require a bit more network traffic to pass from VM1 to VM2 or vice versa (copying files, connecting to the other VM's Computer Management console...) the network communication stops after several seconds:

After some timeout it resumes and the process of stopping/resuming may be repeated several times or the operation may never be completed at all.

Exactly the same Nics and switch operate perfect when connecting HOSTs (NOT the VMs) - the problem arises ONLY between VMs (Hyper-V).

I did this test many times with different Nics and different switches - no problems exist until the Nics start to get used by Hyper-V.

???

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Deleted Snapshots when VM was OFF... Now What?!

I deleted a snapshot tree when the VM was turned off. So... is there a way for me to revert it and do it the correct way?

Thanx

Is it safe to delete a checkpoint made on a VM which is a DC

Hello,

I have made some checkpoints on two domain controllers before discovering tonight that creating checkpoints on DCs is not supported.

I made the checkpoints about a month ago when the VM were running.

Is it safe to delete the checkpoints on the two VMs?

Thanks all!

Expand Dynamically Expanding Virtual HD Space

Hi Server Expert,

I have a Server 2012 Hyper V server that being installed with few VMs. Those VM are using dynamically Expanding virtual HDD.

Take an example from one of the server below:

A VM called "Finance Server". this server virtual HDD has been configured with dynamically expanding virtual hdd. On the hyper v server, we created 500GB partition and this partition is being used to store the virtual hdd of the "Finance Server". I created 3 dynamically expanding VHD as I would like to have 3 partitions on the Finance Server. The three dynamically expanding VHDs are A.vhdx,B.vhdx, and c.vhdx. A.vhdx is 50GB, B.vhdx is 100GB, and C.vhdx is 150GB. each of the dynamic VHD will correspond to the partition in the "Finance Server". So, C partition is using A.vhdx, D partition is using B.vhdx, and E partition is using C.vhdx.

The Problem Encounter:

D partition is out of disk space. in this case, how am I going to expand it? Should I expand the space on the Hyper V server? currently the "Finance Server" is using 500GB of the HDD space. if we increase disk space by 200GB in the Hyper V Server, after extend the 500GB to 700GB, how am I going to use the space that just being increased into the "Finance Server"'s D drive? does it mean that by increasing the Hyper V disk space of 500GB to 700GB, the Finance server will be able to automatically consume the new space of 200GB or I need to login to Finance Server and activate it?

Now, if the finance VM is able to consume the 200GB free space from the server, how should I allocate it to the partition D inside the  finance server? does it mean that by increasing the size of D drive by using the new space of 200GB will solve the issue? or I still need to expand the size of dynamic VHD? as I know dynamic VHD is not able to expand as it will always grow right?

Thanks

Regards,

H

Problem with VMQ

Hello.

We have Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter Hyper-V cluster. 4 of VMs are TMG servers (2 proxy/reverse proxy and 2 Exchange 2010 Edge with TMG). TMG server pairs included in NLB clusters.

On each Hyper-V node I enable network team (Dynamic mode) with SCVMM Logical Switch.

I try to enable VMQ on its nodes. All is okay, but 4 TMG VMs don't receive VMQ for NLB virtual adapters and lost connection thru NLB. Other NLBs (SharePoint, Exchange, AD RMS, CRL) work as expected. TMG VMs get VMQ only for 3rd, non-NLB adapter (TMG intra-array communication).

I try to disable VMQ on problem virtual adapter but without success.

Last Emulex network adapters firmware and drivers were installed. I also install KB3031598 on Hyper-V nodes.

I disable VMQ on physical adapters until another solution.

cannot start Hyper-V virtual machine

Hi,

I have a Windows 2008 Server. It has been now upgraded to Windows 2012. Everything was working fine. But, now I turned off the virtual machine and copied the VHD file to another drive for backup. After this, I am not able to start the old virtual machine. (The VHDs are in place. I only copied them) However, two another virtual machines are running now without any problem. While trying to start, I am getting the error "the operation cannot be performed while the object is in its current state". These are critical server. Any quick thoughts?

Thanks

Allocating Virtual Machines in Hyper-V

Does anyone have a good reference for the rules and recommendations for allocating VM's.  In other words how to determine the number of VM's I'll need relative to the roles that the VM's will play.  Also determining how VM's per physical server?  Thanks for your help.

Does it have any impact changing from iSCSI to FCoE with Hyper-V fail over cluster in a VDI env

Hi Team,

we are planning to make use of iSCSI protocol from EMC SAN storage to the UCS blade loaded with Hyper-v failover cluster based xendesktop VDI with PVS.

may be after 3-4 months later we will switch the protocol from iSCSI to FCoE in VDI environment so, does it have any impact? what i meant is not the downtime but, more related to WS 2012 R2 Hyper-v based system will work with out formatting the initial LUNs created with iSCSI protocol?

Grouping two server together on same Host.

In the Hyper configuration that is setup it has 7 hosts each with several guest servers.

I have two servers that I would like to keep together.  So if HYPERV-SRV01 is placed into maintenance mode I would like to have guest-server01 and guest-server02 move together to another Hyper-v host (HYPERV-SRV02).  All of these host are in the same blade server chasse.

Hyper-V Replica VMs - Multiple IPs

$

Hi all, couple of quick questions about how to set multiple IP addresses on a primary and replica hyper-v VM. Scenario: There's a four node 2012R2 hyper-v failover cluster in datacenter1 and also a four node 2012R2 hyper-v failover cluster in datacenter 2. Replication for a couple of vms are set up through the hyper-v broker from DC1 to DC2. One of the vms has multiple IP addresses on network adapter 1. In the VM settings on the primary and replica vm you can see the Failover TCP/IP settings which allow you to set a single IP address. Ah, the questions now:

Is there a way to set multiple ip addresses on both the primary and replica vms on the network adapter and if yes how would you do that on both?

What if you have multiple network adapters on the primary and replica vm? Can you somehow set up multiple ip addresses on the first adapter and a single IP on the second adapter?

Any feedback appreciated. Thanks.

2012 r2 hyper v pagefile system managed

Not sure this is the right location to ask this, but I haven't found clarification on my question through my searches. I was hoping an expert can shed some light on my confusion.

So I have a 2012r2 hyper-v host with 1 vm

32gb ram

now I know Microsoft says with 2012 r2 to leave it managed and they claim they improved pagefile usage to not create a large page file when running a hyperv host. but my system does have currently a 32gb page file. after researching I found that by default if there is a dump that the page file will immediately increase to the size of the memory, but after 4 weeks it will decrease. but I haven't seen that happen. I did create a crash about 2 months ago testing something but it hasn't changed and I also deleted the registry key LastCrashTime but still hasn't change. I have another host in a similar situation with no vms on it yet. I was trying to get help understanding, why the large pagefile if Microsoft says they addressed it and that to leave it system managed, if it can have the same result as 2008r2 at system managed? I'm tempted to hard set the size of the page file.

If someone mentions for crash dump , there already is a reg key to address having a dedicated page file just for dumps on different location.

Hyper-V Snapshot Issue on Exchange server

Hyper-v 2008 R2

I have a 2TB host in which I am running 2 VM's

Exchange was a 900gb Fixed disk VM

Terminal server 200gb Fixed.

I was working remotely on my iPhone on the Exchange server (I know, don't ask) when I think I accidentally hit the snapshot button inside of Hyperv Manager.

The user called and said the server stopped working and I quickly realized it unexpectedly rebooted and the Address Book service failed to start automatically. I was trying to navigate my way around on my phone and thats when I think I hit the snapshot button.

I didn't realize this until 2 days later when looking inside my VHDS folder that a new AVHD file was created that was 818gb and timestamped exactly when I was working on it remotely.

The original VHD file was dated 2 days earlier and 825gb

The snapshot is NOT showing up in Hyperv Manager at all so I'm not sure what the best next steps are.

I figured I would first take the VM offline and export it to a another location before doing anything to preserve the Exchange server. I am running a Barracuda so I'm not worried about losing any email as that will trap everything.

I noticed in the settings of Hyperv Manager for Exchange that it is using the AVHD file as the primary file.

Questions

1 - If I take it offline, shouldn't the 2 files merge without me doing anything else? I just wasn't sure since the Snapshot does not show up in SCVMM or Hyperv manager.

2 - I should be able to see this process in SCVMM?

3- How long will it take to merge 800gb? I've seen varying results depending on disk speed, etc.

With an exchange server, this obviously needs to be done delicately without data loss. I assume my statement about the original Exporting of the VM will cover my bases for that?

Thoughts on how to proceed?

Thanks!

Jim

Looking for suggestions on VM arrangement between 2 drives, 1 SSD , 1 Spindle

$

Right now I have my OS (C:\) on the SSD in a 36Gb partition, then I have 5 VMs on the same SSD in a second (D:\) partition. I only run 1, 2 at the most as needed as I need to work in different developer environments. All of the VMs are differencing disks based on 2 parent disks. I have a second spindle disk (H:\) that I am using for backups of the VMs and I have also moved the paging file there.

But I have 13.2 GB free and I since I need to add more VMs I was wondering how I should rearrange these. I am thinking since Parent disks are read only that maybe they should be moved to the spindle (H:\). But what about the Page file? Should I leave it on the spindle or would I get better performance from it being on the SSD?

The Hyper-V machine is an Intel core i7-4770 @ 3.40Ghz with 24 GB of RAM running Windows 8.1.

Thanks,

Phil

Issues with Ubuntu 12.04 Virtual Machine after updating Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts

I started having issues with an Ubuntu 12.04 VM crashing after I updated my Hyper-V R2 clustered hosts. The VM has the integration tools enabled (verified by lsmod).

Using System Monitor the Memory and processor utilization was at 100% before the crash.

Is there a recent patch that causes an issue with the integration services with Ubuntu 12.04 VMs?
