Any idea

ACPI X64 based PC showing in device manager instead of ACPI multiprocessor in windows 2008

We have a virtual server with 16 core cpu's, In device manager the computer is showing as ACPI X64 based PC instead of ACPI multiprocessor in windows 2008, 2012, Any idea ?

As per my understanding only windows 2003 and earlier version will show ACPI multiprocessor PC and windows 2008/2012 it will show X64 based PC or x86 based PC.

Enable replication fails with certificate CN error

I am having an odd issue with enabling replication between my Hyper-V hosts. We don't have a central CA so I am using a TechNet blog post "Hyper V Replica Certificate Based Authentication Makecert" (Sorry, my account has not been verified so I can't post links)

These steps have worked 100% on 4 of my Hyper-V hosts but I have 1 host that keeps giving me the following error:

"Hyper-V failed to enable replication.

Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'vsprdrec12': The certificate's CN name does not match the passed value. (0x800B070F).

The Replica server's name  for Hyper-V does not match the received certificate's subject common name (CN) or subject alternative name (DNS Name): The certificate's CN name does not match the passed value (0x800B010F)."

(Sorry again, account hasn't been verified so no screen shot of the error.)

The primary and the replica servers are set up exactly like my other primary and replica servers, but only this one gives me the error.  Anyone have any suggestions on a remedy of resources?

Thank you all in advance.

Hyper-V Virtual Machine DNS Records Delete After Live Migration

Our setup is as follows...

(3) Hyper-V Hosts

(2) 2012 R2 Virtual Domain Controllers

CSV Storage

When I Migrate a Virtual Server from one host to another the A record for that server gets deleted from DNS.  I can do an ipconfig /registerdns on the VM and it will populate in DNS, but as soon as I migrate the server to another host it will erase again. We're not seeing any errors in Event Viewer.  Within ADSI Edit the dNSTombstoned attribute turns to TRUE after a migration, then back to FALSE after we run ipconfig /registerdns

Any idea why this would be happening or how I can fix this issue?

Moving to Hyper-V - licen

Hi all,

I have 6 physical servers which I want to move to Hyper-V 2 node cluster (each 2 CPU). Hyper-V nodes will run on Windows 2012 R2 Standard edition. All 6 physical servers are already licensed (2003 and 2008 servers).

My questions:

1. Do I need to licence servers again when they are moved to virtual environment? What is the best way/tool to do it?

2. I want to install additional Windows 2012R2 server as new virtual server on Hyper-V. Is this covered with Standard license which is used for Hyper-V? As far as I know I should be able to run 2 addiotional VM's (VOSE) on Hyper-V with Standard license.

3. Windows 2012 R2 Standard licence covers 2 CPU and 2 VOSE. I know (think) that if I want to run 6 VM's on 2 node Hyper-V cluster I need to have 3 Windows Server standard licence for each host. Am I right? But my scenario is that I already have licenced physical server and want to move them to Hyper-V 2 node cluster?

I think I do not need any additional license if I want to run them on single node Hyper-V. But what if it's 2 node cluster - my scenario?

4. Am I able to use live migration in this scenario? I have shared storage. Do I need anything else?

Thanks

Tomas

connect to a virtual machine from Hyper-V Manager

Hi,As we know we are following below steps to connect to virtual machine

Open Hyper-V Manager. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then clickHyper-V Manager.

  • In the results pane, under Virtual Machines, right-click the name of the virtual machine and clickConnect.

  • The Virtual Machine Connection command prompt opens and we can login and execute commands.

  • How to achieve this programmatically in C# without  GUI?(how to remotely execute commands on a VM and get results programmatically using C#).We have performed start/stop/pause/reset operations on VM using WMI but not sure about connecting to VM?

  • Thanks&Regards

Hyper-V with Multiple Windows 7 Workstations versus RDS

$

I have a Windows 2008 r2 standard server and need to setup RDS that runs office 2013 and a 3rd party EMR software for around 10 users. I checked and the only version of office 2013 that works on a server is Pro plus which is supposedly around $500 per user.

So I started wondering if Hyper-V would be a better solution. Essentially I would add a new virtual Windows 7 workstation for each remote user they need and log in to each to configure a traditional W7 remote desktop setup. All of which would be going across a 3 site vpn tunnel. So this would give the user a W7 environment versus a server OS but I have a few questions:

Would the Hyper-V setup in this way be more resource intensive on the server and the lan/wan?

It seems that their would be a significant amount of additional configuration time to get the Hyper-V working because I would have to login to each one and join it to the domain, create AD users, install the EMR software, configure remote desktop, open firewall ports, set static ip's, etc...

Cost wise, it seems like for the Hyper-V I would simply need a windows license and a standard office 2013 home and business license for each virtual Windows 7.
Please give me thoughts and suggestions regarding this setup. Any help is appreciated.

Hyper-V Replica Capacity Planner stuck getting VM information

I'm trying to use the Capacity Planner for Hyper-V replica tool to estimate requirements for a replica site.

It keeps getting stuck "Getting the VM and VHD from primary site, this can take upto several minutes...". I've waited over an hour, and it still sits there.

The primary site is a 3 node Hyper-V 2012R2 cluster. I have installed and configured the Hyper-V Replication Broker role on the cluster. For now, it's set to use HTTP without any certificates.

I don't have a replica site yet, so I've selected "Skip tests involving Replica site". For the primary site, I've tried pointing it at both the replication broker, and at one of the individual nodes. It gets stuck in the same place.

Other things I've tried:

  • Disabled windows firewall on all 3 nodes
  • Running the tool from one of the nodes, logged in as a domain admin account
  • Moving all the VMs off of one node, and pointing the tool at that now empty node
  • Let it run for longer - left it alone overnight.
  • Downloaded the tool again in case it was corrupt
  • Rebooted my computer

In all cases, it gets stuck at the exact same spot.

Any idea how to figure out why it is freezing? Have I missed configuring something important for the tool to run?

Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V BSOD (vhdmp.sys)

Hi,

our Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V crashed today.

According to the dumpfile it seems to be something with vhdmp.sys

Any idea what could have been causing this?

Hyper-V 3.0 VM stuck in "Stopping" state

$

We are running Hyper-V on a 2012 server and for the 20nd time in as many months I've logged into a VM and restarted or migrated to another host it but it's stuck in the "stopping" state in Hyper-V 3.0 and doesn't give me any Turn Off, Shutdown, Save, Pause or Reset options.  The only thing I've been able to do is to schedule a time to reboot the Hyper-V server.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there any command I can run get the VM  top turn off  w/o having to reboot or restart the Hyper-V service?

Our host environment as below:

HP C7000 Blade Chasis

16x ProLiant BL460c Gen8 Server (Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650 0 @ 2.00GHz (8 Cores) - 256GB Ram)

Blades server have Hp FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port

2x HP VC Flex-10 Enet Module on Chassie

HP VC 8Gb 20-Port FC Module on Chassie

Also We turned off tcp checksum offloading but it didn't work.

We've opened case to HP support but they analyzing our system and didn't find any problem to themself.

Does anybody have any fixes for these problems?

Looking for suggestions on VM arrangement between 2 drives, 1 SSD , 1 Spindle

Right now I have my OS (C:\) on the SSD in a 36Gb partition, then I have 5 VMs on the same SSD in a second (D:\) partition. I only run 1, 2 at the most as needed as I need to work in different developer environments. All of the VMs are differencing disks based on 2 parent disks. I have a second spindle disk (H:\) that I am using for backups of the VMs and I have also moved the paging file there.

But I have 13.2 GB free and I since I need to add more VMs I was wondering how I should rearrange these. I am thinking since Parent disks are read only that maybe they should be moved to the spindle (H:\). But what about the Page file? Should I leave it on the spindle or would I get better performance from it being on the SSD?

The Hyper-V machine is an Intel core i7-4770 @ 3.40Ghz with 24 GB of RAM running Windows 8.1.

Thanks,

Phil

Testing DR Site and Organizing Primary SAN

$

I would like to make sure that my ideas for execution are the safest method. I need to test my newly created DR replicas by running from the VMs on that side for a bit. I also need to organize the primary SAN while we are operating off of the DR SAN. I plan to do a final replication on a Saturday. At that point I will simply shutdown the primary VMs and then start up the VMs on the DR site. I would do a planned failover, but as stated, I want to re-organize my primary SAN. While we are running off of the DR site, I am going to create uniform sized volumes on the primary SAN. Of course, this will require the removal of replication, the VMs on the primary side as well as the removal of the cluster disks from Hyper V before removing the volumes themselves. Now at this point i will add the disks to Hyper V and setup a replica broker to replicate back to the primary. Does this sound logical? Or am I making things more complicated than they have to be?

Reverting to a checkpoint

Hello all,

I have a host machine (Host2) with the VM named Exch1 (Windows Server R2 + Exchange 2013SP1). I created this VM 13.04.2015 and took a snapshot yesterday, 15.04.2015:

Today I started working with Exch1 at ~11:00 and had to restore my single snapshot (checkpoint) at3:42 A.M.

After restoring (I see that the old configuration has really been restored) I still can see in the Exch1's logs events dated prior to 04/15/2015/3:42 A.M. and AFTER 4/15/2015 7:49 A.M.:

In other words, I see the consecutive chain of events as if I hadn't restored the snapshot taken yesterday...

After restoring today at 3:30 AM  the snapshot of my second VM (DC) hosted on Host1 that was taken on 04/15/2015 at7:49 AM (at the same time as the snapshot of Exch1) I see in DC's logs eventsup to 04/15/2015 7:48:59AM and starting from  04/16/2015 3:30:26 AM - as expected...

Is it somehow possible that Hyper-V restores only part of a snapshot???

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Hyper-V Replica in a workgroup environment

$

I'm trying to set up Hyper-V Replica between two Windows 2012 R2 hosts.   They are not part of a domain, but they do belong to the same workgroup.

On the secondary host, I enabled it as a Replica server and selected Kerberos for the authentication mode.  I also selected "Allow replication from any authenticated server".  I then ran the Enable Replication wizard on the primary server and went through the wizard.  After clicking Finish, I get a "Enabling replication failed" error dialog with this message:

     Hyper-V failed to enable replication.

Hyper-V failed to authenticate using Kerberos authentication.

Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'xxx': No credentials are available in the security package (0x8009030E).

Hyper-V failed to authenticate the Replication server YYY using Kerberos authentication.  Error: No credentials are available in the security package (0x8009030E).

The one post I found that talked about this issue in a workgroup environment, http://www.chicagotech.net/win8&2012/replicaissue1.htm, suggested making sure that Everyone and Authenticated Users have permission to "Access this computer from the network" in local policies.  Did that on both machine and that didn't help.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Richard

Hello,

I'm trying to create a working desktop virtualization environment, my Hyper-V is working correctly, I've created a windows 7 template on it. Sysprepped the template.

But when I'm trying to create the Virtual Desktop Collection. But whenever it's trying to retrieve the details of the Virtual Desktop Collection i get this

(copy link for screenshot: http://gyazo.com/ebde69697b57a3e9e5fdb7ef1db31cef)

Also, here is a screenshot of the configuration of the collection:

Everything is running on VMWare Workstation 10, the domains etc are for school..

Please help!

Hyper-v and very slow network

$

Dear all,

I have a big problem with my hyper-v server and network card. I've found a lot of topic around this question but none of them helped me.

I have a Win 2008 R2 Server with only Hyper-V installed. I have 3 NIC , one is reserved to the host management and the others two are reserved for virtual machine .

All NIC are Intel, one is integrated on the Intel motherboard and the others are Intel Gigabit ET Dual port .

Before installing the role of Hyper-V all NIC worked perfectly with speed around 1Gb (file transfer average 90 MB/Sec, of course I have a Gigabit LAN) .

After Hyper-V install, the host system  is going very slow and the network file transfer using the dedicated NIC is about ten time slower (9-10MB /sec) . Same problem with all VM off and also if I remove all VM !

I tried all of suggestion found in old post (disabling TCP checksum / offload ...) but nothing happens.

What is really strange is that by removing all network card all the Host operating system seems to improve the speed... but, of course, I can't use  my LAN :(

I need help because every night I must make a full backup of Virtual hard disk from the host to a backup server in my lan.

My configuration:

- Server Win 2008 R2 SP1 with Hyper-V and no others role

- 2 Virtual Machine (one Win 2008 R2 and one Win 7 Ultimate)

- NAS Linux (access via SMB with no problem)

- Various Windows 7 Pro client

Thanks in advance to everybody,

Luca M.

Windows 2012 R2 fails to boot up

Hi,

I have installed Windows 2012 R2 OS on Dell PE R720 and installed Hyper-V on the Server. I had a couple of Virtual machines but it was running fine. Today, I find the server to be down and when checking I see this error.

I tried to go to the repair option and from the command prompt ran chkdsk.

chkdsk got completed with no issues.

sfc /scannow also got completed.

I can boot into safemode with no issues. Any further suggestions are appreciated. From the DRAC, there are no hardware errors.

In safemode, NIC, IP etc are all good.

I also tried copying the ntfs.sys from another similar Hyper-V host (also running Windows 2012 R2) but still the issue persists.
