Migrating Hyper-V 2008 R2 HA Clustered to Hyper-V 2012R HA Clustered with minimal downtime to new hardware and storage

Folks:

Alright, let's hear it.

I am tasked with migrating an existing Hyper-V HA Clustered environment from v2008R2 to new server hardware and storage running v2012R2.

Web research is not panning out, it seems that we are looking at a lot of downtime, I am a VMware guy and I would do likely a V2V migration at this point with minimal downtime.

What are my options in the Hyper-V world?  Help a brother out.

Move VM's from current Volume to new Disc on the same host (Win 2012 R2) for added space

$

I have one host with 5 VM's running on it. On my host, I have a C: a D: and now a E:

On my D:, there is two folder. One is Data, which are flat file for the users and the second folder is "VirtualServers" where inside you will find a folder for each VM.

Because my data and virtualservers folders have grown to much, I just purchase new sata drives to put in my server. Server is an HP and all I had to do was to create a new RAID 5 array and now, in Windows 2012 R2 I can see the new E: drive with all the new space.

The plan is to move the "VirtualServers" folder to the new E:

I have read many way to do it but I want to make sure this is done the right way as I cannot afford a nightmare story like the one I have read online.

I see that there is a "move" option under Setting of Hyper-V Manager but I also read about exporting and importing. Which should be use? Can this be done while the VM's are running or should they be shut down?

Thank you

SYSTEM PID 4 is relentlessly reading VHD files for VMs that are not even powered on

I've got a bit of a quandary here.  We have several VMs that were powered off about 2 weeks ago.  Despite no access being requested, the SYSTEM process is performing large amounts of read activity on the VHD files.  Image name is "System, PID is 4, which corresponds to the PID of the hypervisor.

The host is Server 2012 R2 Datacentre edition.  We have a 2-node HA cluster and the VHDs reside in ClusterStorage (SAN) as usual.  The Failover Cluster Manager still shows the VM role defined.  Removing the role from FCM did not seem to have any effect.  We do NOT have Replication enabled on any nodes.

2 Questions:

1) How do I tell what is constantly reading these files?

2) How do I make it stop?  The high read activity is impacting my cluster performance.

Hyper-V Administrators Group Not Working

Hi,

I was hoping someone could help me out. We have a complex environment with RBAC heavily applied. Our deployed administrators don't have Local Admin rights on the 2012 Hyper-V servers. They are in the Hyper-V Administrators group. Now everything works well until they go add there second Hyper-V Server into Hyper-V Manager. It just doesn't work. Now they don't get access denied its some issue that even google doesn't know about. I'll be able to post it tomorrow when I get into the office. You can't see the VM's however the host adds. They can log into the second box and view all the vm's but if they go to add the first box into hyper-v manager just doesn't work. Now soon as we give them local admin to the machine it works. However for our security model we can't do this. I was wondering if someone can provide any help on the matter? Have also tried setting up the permissions in azman again and still no luck. They are joined to the same domain as well.

Thanks

Hyper-V vSwitch Traffic Strangeness

$

The problem: I am unable to get traffic between a Hyper-V host and it's VM to utilize an internal virtual switch while an external virtual switch is also connected.

Currently running a single Win2012 R2 server with Hyper-V installed as a test environment. I have one Hyper-V VM, VM1, which needs fast access to a file share located on the Hyper-V host VM1 is hosted on. The Hyper-V host has two Hyper-V virtual switches configured. One is an external virtual switch and is tied to the physical 1GB network adapter on the Hyper-V host. The other is an internal virtual switch and as such is not tied to the Hyper-V hosts physical network adaptor. VM1 has two virtual adaptors configured on it; the external and internal adaptors as outlined above. The external virtual switch's subnet is 192.132.4.x with both the host and VM1 having a unique IP address on that subnet. The internal virtual switch's subnet is 10.10.0.x with both the host and VM1 having a unique IP address on that subnet.

Hyper-V Host:
Internal IP: 10.10.0.10
External IP: 192.132.4.10

VM1:
Internal IP: 10.10.0.20
External IP: 192.132.4.20

The problem occurs like this. Both the internal and external virtual adaptors are enabled. Logged into VM1, I copy a 2GB file from the Hyper-V host's share at \\10.10.0.10\share to VM1's C:. I have Task Manager open and am on the Performance tab where I can see which adaptors the traffic is using based on utilization. When I transfer the 2GB file the external adaptor is clearly being used to transfer the file and the internal adaptor shows no traffic. What I want to see is the traffic traversing the internal adaptor since the \\10.10.0.10 IP does not exist on the 192.132.4.x subnet which the external adaptor's virtual switch is connected to. Now, I disable the external virtual adaptor on VM1 and repeat accessing the same share at \\10.10.0.10\share; the file transfers to VM1 using the internal virtual adaptor this time.

I don't understand how the external adaptor can be used to access a path destined for the 10.10.0.x subnet in the first place; that adaptor can not access that subnet.

Aside from Performance monitor clearly showing the traffic usage the internal vswitch is not capped by the physical 1GB adaptor and really flies speed-wise. This is the reason for this setup; 100-120MB's vs 600MB's. This is a developmental environment and I am aware this would not be good for a production environment.

Help is greatly appreciated!

RPC issues

Hi,

So, I have a weird issue regarding 2 hyper-v core servers 2012 R2

If I use a machine on the same network as the management IP of the hyper-v servers, I can use hyper-v manager perfectly fine to manage the servers.

If the machine is not on the same network, I end up with RPC issues:

* the first server, shows in hyper-v manager, but fails to load the vm with RPC server unavailable. Unable to establish communication....

* the second server does not even want to show up in hyper-v manager

if I use 5nine manager:

* the first server shows and the VMs load

* the second server fail with RPC unavailable.

I have ran hvremote which detects no issue at all except that the firewall on the servers are down (normal as i am troubleshooting)

I can ping / rdp / powershell perfectly fine.

Also, for the second server, when I launch powershell from the command prompt:

* Attempting to perform the InitializeDefaultDrives operation on the 'FileSystem' provider failed.

But the first one does not have an issue.

If anyone could point me in the right direction, it will be appreciated :)

DR and Licensing w/SA

$

I have two physical servers, one production and one that would be strictly for DR, both running a base OS with Hyper-V role, andI'm looking for some clarification on two points related to software assurance, and licensing the DR physical box.

We currently have two Windows Server Open Licenses w/SA (to support up to 4 guest OS') on our production server.

1. Referring to the Software Assurance Benefits document under Back-up for Disaster Recovery, it states the physical server designated for DR (in this case base OS with only the Hyper-V role) can be in a running state to accept replicas. So, is it safe to assume this means "always on" as long as there is no work load. E.g. no running guest OS' or other role/applications other than Hyper-V so it can accept replicas (and also allow for the quarterly patches and maintenance tasks)?

2. If so, do I just activate/assign the same license keys I used on the production on my DR physical server?

PS - I would have provided the hyperlink to the SA benefits document, but I'm a newbee and as such, Microsoft has chosen some kind of archaic act of congress method of verification, or as I've read, a need by the user to garner a greater reputation by being a prolific poster, or some such nonsense so that I become "worthy" of such dastardly acts such as providing links and images in a post.  I mean what is wrong with what every other forum does, send a verification link in an email...Done!
Sorry, just my rant of the day... Lol ;)

Redirecting com port to named pipes on Server 2008

Just finished a NEW build of (1) SBS2003R2, (2) Webserver & (3)PABX
Server... on Server2008 WVS
Box HPDL 380 G5 6GB ram, raid1 37GB, raid 5 350GB
Server 2008 WVS Enterprise
Virtual
SBS2003R2 x86
Server2008Web x64 (WEB)
Server2008Web x64 (PABX)

This has been up for 8 days, I am testing continuosly, NO hickups,
install of SBS very fast, and after installing VM tools, extremly fast
and responsive. BUT

I need one Com port for my fax modem on the SBS server.

So I set the com port on the VM to \\.\pipe\com1

Now I have to do the corresponding on the Host server.

I tried to use WINdbg with the code of windbg -b -k comStick out tongueipe,port=\\.\pipe\com_1,resets=0 ,

I did not work, which I expected, the problems is I can't find any relevant documentation on how to do this.

It would be extremly helpful if we would have a driver from MS for this, or is there one?

Many thanks

Hyper-V snapshot for package management?

$

Greetings,

I have created a Hyper-V Windows 7 VM on my Windows 8.1 PC to use for installing Flexera AdminStudio. The idea is to use this VM to create msi packages. AdminStudio will monitor the install of an application and then create a package based on the system changes. It is suggested to create a VM to do this so you can always revert back to a fresh image after the package has been created.

I am interested in how to revert back a VM in Hyper-V? I see that there is something called Checkpoint. Will Checkpoint allow me to always revert my VM back to a specific point? (IE after the package has been completed)

Cheers,

Virtual Machine Export Failed

$

I am requesting help with a continuing problem I am having attempting to export a Hyper-V Virtual Machine to a shared drive internally installed on a Domain Server.

When I attempt the export, a few second later I received the following error message: “An error occurred while attempting to export the virtual machine. Failed to copy file during export. General access denied error (0x80070005).”

I have spent numerous hours searching Blog Posts and Online forums for a definitive solution to this problem. The purposed online solutions that I have come across refer toNTFS level permissions & share level permissions set at the drive share for the Hyper-V Computer account, the User account used, and System account. None have worked for me. Here is an example of such a post finding:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2008849.

I also tried the settings from a purposed solution for Hyper-V – General Access Denied Error message listed in this post here: http://blog.mpecsinc.ca/2009/02/hyper-v-general-access-denied-error-for.html. No luck here also.

I have a small Microsoft 2008 R2 SP1 Server network that consists of 2 Domain Controllers, (one which serve as a Hyper-V Host). 4 virtual machines and a combination of wireless and PC based Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 clients.

The 1TB drive I’m attempting to move my virtual machines to is brand new, purchased five days ago. I reformatted this drive a couple times to see if that had any affect, none at all.

So, I’m reaching out for any other suggestions that I might try. Please, remember I have already tried and have in place the NTFS level permissions & share level permissions set at the drive share for the Hyper-V Computer account, the User account used, and System account.

Your help with this problem will be very much appreciated.

Thank you,

Martiar

Trouble with a OpenVPN VM in Hyper-V.

Hello,

I will explain a bit about my setup firstly before I get into my issue. So I have a home server running Windows Server 2012 R2. I am using Hyper-V role to host a OpenMediaVault VM. I use this to create an easy OpenVPN that I can use anywhere. I have attached my OMV VM to a external network virtual switch (has full internet connection).

The issue is when I generate my VPN config and use the certificates and test on my phone. When I connect locally to my WiFi I can connect to my VPN VM machine no issues at all. However when I flick to 4G and try to connect it sticks on 'waiting from reply to server'. I have tested this with a friend on his laptop and he also has the same issue.

I have port forwarded in my router the correct port and IP so it should allow connections, I have even tried disabling the Host 2012 R2 firewall but still no joy. I belive it somthing in Hyper-V virtual switch stopping it.

Anyone got any idea what the issue could be?

Disk remain readonly inside guest while it is read-write enabled on hypervisor host

Hi,

Strangely Hyper-V guest is not updating its disk cache, even issuing diskpart rescan is not helping. So disk (Harddisk1) inside guestremains readonly while disk (Harddisk7) is read-write enabled on hypervisor host.

Hyper-V virtual machine managemnt service stopped on W2012 server due to "Event 10016, DIstibutedCom"

$

Hello,

So we had an issue on a W2012 server running Hyper-V with 5 virtual machines, that being
that the virtual machine management service was in a stopped state when I logged on hence none of the VM's were running. All I had to do was start it again and everything came back with no issues, but I want to get to the bottom of why this happened to ensure it does nto happen again.

From Event viewer I see that we had four instances of "Event 10016, DIstibutedCom" and then a further five instances and this corresponds with the VM's going offline, but also from the error you can see that it relates directly to the VMMS as below :

The
application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Launch permission
for the COM Server application with CLSID

{D9E7172C-F462-4CC8-9C80-3B3A00D0D874}

and APPID

{BD168A68-48E8-4AE5-BF4B-CC4F495A0D0F}

to the user NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\518C6C66-296F-449D-A79C-BC2D4B0BBA1C SID
(S-1-5-83-1-1368157286-1151150447-767335591-481954635) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component
Services administrative tool.

With APPID : {BD168A68-48E8-4AE5-BF4B-CC4F495A0D0F} being that Virtual Machine Management
when checking in DCOM Config.

There is no event to say that the VMMS is stopping or stopped after event 10016, as I would
expect to see and there is no common event happening before the two batches of
errors either.

Looking into event 10016 it would appear that the permissions seem to be the issue here and
I need to edit the permissions in the component services admin tool, but when
looking in DCOMConfig the security tab is grey out (probably due to UAC) but I don’t
see why this has happned now with no evniromental changes and why its not
effecting me still?

We do use SCVMM so I am wondering if an event triggered by SCVMM has caused this also ?

Any help appreciated?

Regard’s

Iain

Enable Virtual Machine to Access Internet with ICS

$
0
0

In order to experience Hyper-V, you may choose to use Hyper-V on a laptop, and it will likely come with an issue when you create an external virtual switch bounding to a wireless NIC due to hardware compatibility.

For this reason and requirement, Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) may help us. ICS makes use of network address translation (NAT) mapping individual IP address of local computer (virtual machine) to unused port number in the TCP/IP stack of ICS host computer. For more information about ICS, please refer to the article here.

Internet Connection Sharing (From Wikipedia)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Connection_Sharing

To achieve this in the Hyper-V environment, please follow the steps below:

Demo configurations:

Hyper-V Host: Windows Server 2012 R2

IP address of the Wireless NIC: 192.168.0.100/24

Virtual Machine (Windows Server 2012 R2): 192.168.1.100/24

1. Create the Internal Virtual Switch (Figure 1).

1

Figure 1: Create the Internal Virtual Switch

2. Connect your virtual machine to the new virtual switch (Figure 2).

2

Figure 2: Assign the Internal Virtual Switch to the VM

3. Find the wireless NIC with internet access then share it with the Internal Virtual Switch (Figure 3).

3

Figure 3: Share the wireless NIC

4. Change the IP address of the Virtual Switch and assign the IP address as the Default Gateway for the Virtual Machine (Figure 4).

4

Figure 4. IP configurations

After that, your virtual machine can have the Internet access (Figure 5).

testxx

Figure 5: Access the Internet

Note: ICS provides the DHCP service by default. After sharing wireless NIC, the Virtual Switch will get an IP address automatically (192.168.137.1). If DHCP is enabled in your VM, it will get an IP address within the same subnet from ICS host computer, also the Gateway and DNS.

Hyper-V R3 and Datalink Layer

Running Windows 8 Pro (x64) With Hyper-V installed.
Trying to talk from a VM (Windows 7 Pro, x86) to some equipment using PN-DCP (Profinet Discovery and Configuration Protocol), ref
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discovery_and_Configuration_Protocol
http://wiki.wireshark.org/PROFINET/DCP

I cannot get this working. Using a physical machine with the same OS and the same Application running the PN-DCP everything is ok.
I suspect that non-IP protocols are not Hyper-V's best friends.

Does Hyper-V (R3 ?) on Windows 8 support these kind of protocols (Layer 2 ?).
If not, any workaround ?
