Blu Ray Ripping in Hyper-V

I have the following BD drive connected to the my desktop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135252. I have installed Hyper-V Core and set up a Windows 8 VM on it. My issue is that Hyper-V shows the drive as a DVD Drive. Which means whenever I pass it to the VM, and try to burn or rip a Blu Ray it fails miserably. Has anyone else had issues with getting Hyper V to recognize their BD Drive as a BD drive?

Hyper-v Dev Setup

I want to setup a hyper-v 2012 environment to host mainly dev machines. I have a blade server for hyper-v, 1 server for a File Server (with a  10Gb nic and SAS HBA) and a MSA60 for additional Storage . Will this work to use Hyper-v over SMB? I know storage spaces & also clustering of DAS only works on certain HW but will SMB 3.0 work in this type of setup

How can i get temp and such on core install

I know this has been asked a million times but i can't find an answer (maybe i am just that noob). I am trying to get the temp and fan speeds etc from the computer running windows server 2012 r2 core. here are the specs of my computer:

mobo - ASUS M5A99FX pro r2

CPU - AMD 8320

RAM - 16G

The mobo comes with AI Suite which shows me this info but i can't install it on a core OS. It will also allow for tweaking of the settings. I would like like to be able to watch what is happening in the box as far as temps and such. I manage the server with either windows 8.1 or windows 10 but i see nothing on how to get this info. Any help would be great but i really need it to be a free solution. Thank you in advance for any and all replies.

Hyper-V Extended Replicas

Hi, we have Hyper-V Extended Replicas that for some reason quit replicating and when we go in and try to get them to replicate they never catch up. Is there something we can do or do we have to start all over again with new extended replicas for each server, this is at an offsite location and some servers have several TB of data. If we have to start over, which we have done in the past, we have to export the replica to external disk then physically take it over to the site, plug it in and do an import. Is there another solution?

External USB Drives

Good morning!

I am trying to figure out a way to easily swap between 3 external USB hard drives on a Server 2012 R2 virtual machine that runs via Hyper-V. I have 3 external hard drives, each is 2 terabytes in size.  These 3 drives are going to be used to backup the C: drive of the virtual server.

Is there a way to avoid the hassle of having to initialize each drive manually on the server after I unplug one drive and then connect another? I don't ever want more than 1 drive connected at a time. For example, if I have drive 1 plugged in and my backup cycle is complete I would like to be able to unplug that first drive and then plug in the 2nd drive without having to go back into the drive management and initialize the drive I just plugged in. Is that possible? I haven't been able to find anyone that seems to be doing this, so I may be out of luck.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hyper-V Replication

Hi

I have recently setup Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V replication for VM's in our Dubai Datacentre to replicate to our UK Datacentre. We have a 10MB MPLS link with around 200ms latency. I have the following question:-

VM1 - Has one 38GB Fixed VHDX file with 30GB used

VM2 - Has one 38GB Fixed VHDX file with 15GB Used

Would VM2 replicate quicker than VM1 because there is a large amount of white/unused space?

Thanks in advance for any comments

Servers losing static IP Addresses

Hi There,

We have been experiencing a very strange problem now for several months. We have servers that loses there static IP addresses intermittently - this can happen when the server is rebooted or when the server is running, there is no consistent pattern. This has happened to both VM servers and physical servers. It has happened to VM servers running on Microsoft Hyper-V and VMWare.

We run our server infrastructure across different hardware(Dell, HP).  When we check the network properties via GUI all is fine but when you check from command prompt it's showing the 169.x.x.x address against a card. If we enable\disable the NIC it resolves the issue.

This issue is now becoming very disrupted to services, at least once a week we're now seeing this issue. The event logs are not giving us any information.

Has anyone come across this issue or provide advice what would be the caused. It's happening across all versions of Windows Server from Windows 2008, 2008R2, 2012 & 2012R2.

Hyper-V on Win 8.1 Embedded Host

I believe I'm having permission issues when attempting to use Hyper-V on Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro.  Hyper-V seems to install cleanly, and from an admin account I can use the Hyper-V Manager without issue and connect to a running VM.  However if I attempt to use the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection application from the same account, it reports "You do now have the required permission to complete this task..." And attempts to run either the Manager or the Virtual Machine Connection result in the same on a standard user account.

I've attempted to modify the permissions in Hyper-V InitialStore.xml by adding both my Dev (admin) and Test (user) to the Administrator role but this has not fixed the issue. I've also looked in the Computer Management utility and the group "Hyper-V Administrators" does not exist.  When I run the script from Ben Armstrong that generated and assigned rights to that group before it was shipping with Hyper-V I receive a notification that my current user is already added to the group and still don't see anything in Computer Management.

The end goal is to be able to run the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection Utility from a non-administrative user. Any advice is appreciated.

Integration services cannot upgrade HAL

HI,

We migrated a SBS 2k3 to a virtual machine (host is windows 2k8 sp2 with Hyper-v) using disk2vhd.

We checked the update hal checkmark, but now we are running into a problem. The disk2vhd placed a virtual server hal in the VHD. As soon as we try to insert the integration services disk it keeps saying it has to update the hal and needs a reboot.

We say ok, it says it is updateing the Hal, it reboots and then comes again with the same message that it needs to update the hal. So we are in a loop.

Anyone familiar with this problem?

I was able to recreate the problem with a windows xp machine too.

Best regards,

Henry

Hyper-V Storage Migration Clean Up

I have noticed in Hyper-V 2012R2 when migrating a VM around it leaves behind an empty folder structure. Is there a way cleaning this up automatically after the successful migration?

For instance,

VM located at C:\clusterstorage\FOLDER_A\VM

Moved to C:\clusterstorage\FOLDER_B\VM

But.... The FOLDER_A\VM still exists after a successful migration. This should be deleted to prevent confusion and allow a VM if migrated back to FOLDER_A to reside in a folder called VM and not VM_1.

Unable to see Storage FC LUN to HyperV 2012 r2 VM

Hi,

I have Windows Server 2012 r2 HyperV VM running with Integration Service version 6.3.9600.16384 where i have mapped some LUN from Storage & done Zonning on SAN Switch but still unable to see those LUN's on VM.

I am able to see Virtual FC Card WWPN on SAN Switch through which have done SAN Switch zonning.

Strange part is those LUN's are visible on Host Machine whereas Zonning done for Guest VM WWPN.

Appreciate any support to resolve this issue.

SCVMM 2012 SP1 Virtual Switch on Cluster Node Disappears

$

I have been running into an interesting but an alarming issue with virtual switches. I have recently built a 4 node Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. I have built numerous 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V clusters before, so I am pretty familiar with the process. I have rebuilt my VMM due to software problems, and on this new cluster, I have configured the virtual switches with nic teaming on 2 of the virtual switches.

I have 4 clusters being managed by this VMM.. and this newly built cluster keeps losing all of the VMM virtual switch configurations, meaning if I go to properties on the problem host and click on virtual switches, its blank. Refresh host cluster flags all virtual machines in this cluster as "Unsupported Configuration," making the vm unmanageable via VMM.

Information (26844)
Virtual switch (Virtual Switch Name) is not highly available because the switch is not available in host (One of the Hyper-V Hosts).

Recommended Action

All virtual servers on that host still has connectivity, as all virtual switch configs are normal when looking at it with Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Manager..

The workaround is to evacuate the host using Failover Cluster Manager and reboot the host. Then refresh the host. Then refresh the VM's. I cannot consider this a 'workaround' as I cannot be rebooting my hyper-V hosts every week.. and migrating virtual servers constantly just for this reason. (DPM backups have a FIT with csv's if it tries to backup a vm on a same csv as another vm thats being migrated.)

I have been wrestling with this problem for a few weeks now. The cluster has been slicked and completely rebuilt.. Still same problems. Has ANYONE else out there seen this issue? Does ANYONE out there suggest a way to go about further troubleshooting this issue?

Deleting Checkpoints

I'm confused about deleting checkpoints from Hyper-V Manager on my Windows 2012 R2 Standard server. I tried to delete the only checkpoint (about 2 months old) for a VM and then noticed that it said it was merging. At the time I thought it was reverting the VM to the point of when I created the checkpoint so, I canceled the merge. So, what did I do to the VM? What can I do to make sure that the VM runs as it has for the last two months up to now? I've been reading about "merging" after deleting and still don't know why the word merge would appear. I'm afraid that I've either lost the changes in the last two months or I've reverted back to the state of the last checkpoint. Please help!

Draining Node feature...

hi all;

What happens when I reboot a cluster node without first using the Drain Node feature? In this scenario, does this feature automatically operate?

Thanks

VMs network speed 2

$

Hello!

Consider the following testing environment: there're two host machines - HOST1 and HOST2 - (Core i5, 16Gb RAM, 3 Nics, one of the nics -HV - is used for test VMs) that host one VM each (now they are "DC" and "EXCH1"). These VMs are connected by the 5-port 1Gb switch UPVEIL.

All operating systems (both for host and virtual machines) are Windows Server 2012R2.

To make sure VM1 can communicate with VM2 I run on VM1 "ping VM2 -t" - there would be NO any packet loss however many minutes/hours thisping continues.

When any action starts that require a bit more network traffic to pass from VM1 to VM2 or vice versa (copying files, connecting to the other VM's Computer Management console...) the network communication stops after several seconds:

After some timeout it resumes and the process of stopping/resuming may be repeated several times or the operation may never be completed at all.

Exactly the same Nics and switch operate perfect when connecting HOSTs (NOT the VMs) - the problem arises ONLY between VMs (Hyper-V).

I did this test many times with different Nics and different switches - no problems exist until the Nics start to get used by Hyper-V.

???

Thank you in advance,

Michael

2012 R2 - Checkpoint cleanup from failed VM backup

$

We recently had a network traffic / virtual switch issue crop up, due to VMQ being enabled and improperly configured on Broadcom 10GbE adapters.  While that failure occurred, our backup appliances were taking backups of VMs.  Because of lost network connectivity, the Hyper-V checkpoints used for those backups remain on some of our VMs.

These checkpoints do not have the usual "Delete Checkpoint" / "Delete Checkpoint Subtree" options available to them.  How do I remove them so the virtual disks are merged and back to a single VHDX per virtual disk?

How to store and protect sysprepped VHD from accidental changes?

$
0
0

I'd like to create a Server 2012 R2 server template with all Windows updates installed, then sysprep it and copy it to create new servers as needed.  It needs to be conveniently accessible, yet protected from unwanted changes.

We do not have VMM.

What are options? Change permissions of the file to read-only?

I was thinking of zipping the file and then anyone who needed to access the VHD could extract it and the original zipped file would always still be there.

What is the best way to do this?
