Low bandwidth received at the external switch of VM

I have installed a VM(Windows 2012) in Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter Server running Hyper-V role. I have created an external switch for the VM that is shared by the host OS. The server used is Dell octo core 12GB & the Network Adapter, Broadcom NetXtreme II GigE, is 1 Gbps. The VM does not receive more than 60 Mbps when 1 Gbps traffic is sent to it. I have already installed all the integration services. The NIC does not support dVMQ. Please suggest ways to improve network utilization.

I have created a bare metal guest OS, restored a windows server 2012R2 image on the VHDX. However so far i haven't successfully able to make my guest VM make use of that VHDX. I did go through various forums but i am missing some thing which i need help. I want my guest VM to use the OS that i restored. If someone can share the exact bcdedit commands that would be great. Thanks

Hyper-V Storage Live Migration: Copy instead of move?

0
0
Have a 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster with a HP MSA 2000 Storage. No storage pools or storage spaces, just 4 LUN's with NTFS Volumes that are all converted to CSV's.

Have to perform VM migration from VM's that resides on a CSV with an underlying RAID 5 volume to another CSV with an underlying RAID 50 volume. Could perform the operation without any error from the failover cluster manager (move - virtual machine storge) on the VM.

The problem is that when I check C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1 (the old place of the VM) and C:\ClusterStorage\Volume2 (the new place of the VM), all VM files are still in both locations! Apparently, a "Copy" operation instead of a "move" operation was performed.

- Why are the source files not have been deleted after the successful storage migration?

- Is it safe to manually delete the VM files in C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Franz

hyper-v could not make replica virtual machine a clustered resource

An Exchange server that was previously being replicated to a DR cluster can no longer be clustered. The Server had some disks expanded, this caused the replica VM to stop syncronising. The replication was removed, the vhd disks and folder on the DR were deleted and replication was then initiated again. The error "hyper-v could not make replica virtual machine a clustered resource" occured at the finish. There is ample room on the dr cluster, but no further information on why the creation of the replica VM cannot be completed. I am a bit suck on knowing how to proceed with this issue. VSS Writer failures during Hyper-V backup of VM with Oracle application installed

I am trying to backup a VM which before it had Oracle installed backed up with no problems.  It is a Windows 2008 R2 server which sites on an 8 node Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster (with CSVs).  I am using DPM 2012 R2 to run the backups which have been successful for the last few weeks but then Oracle was installed and the backups have failed since then.

The job fails and a large number of VSS writers go into a 'Failed' state with the 'Last Error' showing as 'Timed out'.  I then get 4 popups appear each referring to a 'temporary' drive which appears briefly in Disk Management with a RAW file system.  These pops say "You need to format the disk in drive X: before you can use it.  Do you want to format it?" (where X: is replaced by the drive letter assigned to each 'temporary' drive).

The System event log is populated with a large number of warnings with Event 51, Disk, stating "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk<number>\DR<number> during a paging operation".  There are also a few warnings for Ntfs (eventid 57) stating that "The system failed to flush data to the transaction log.  Corruption may occur."

Prior to these warnings there are 5 other warnings for partmgr (eventid 58) stating "The disk signature of disk <number x> is equal to the disk signatuire of disk <number y>" and 4 errors (eventid 1, VDS Basic Provider), "Unexpected failure.  Error code: 490@01010004".

There is a script which is run to stop the Oracle application on the server and if this is run then the backups will complete successfully.  We have been troubleshooting this by running a certain amount of the script and seeing which part affects the backup and it seems that if the Weblogic (wls_reports) service is stopped then the backup will succeed but if it is running then the backup will fail and the above symptoms occur.

Another point which may help is that there is a pre-production server which resides on a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V standalone server, has the same scripts and installation of Oracle but backs up without any issues.

I have experienced VSS writer failures before with VM backups but I have not seen this before.  It is not intermittent and I can find no work around to alleviate the problem of having no backup (except stopping this service or shutting the server down, but as it is a production server this is not practical).

I have also posted this into the WSB forum under the following which may have further useful info:

VSS Writer failures during VM backup of server with Oracle application installed

If anyone has experienced this before or have any suggestions / advice it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

I am trying to backup Win2012 R2 VM on my Win2012 R2 hyperv host using VSS.
Before starting backup my vm is in Saved status.
But after backup I cant find saved state file *vsv and *bin file in the backup so I am loosing whatever contains I have in saved state.

Its working fine on Win2008. Is there any change in VSS/Saved state behavior in Win2012R2?

hypervbackup is the utility  I used to run backup.

Thanks In advance. Please let me know if more details are required.

Hi,

Anyone successful in using LLDP on a microsoft Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter edition ? When I enable it via

Ethernet card -> Properties -> Client for Microsoft Networks --> Install -> Protocol --> LLDP , I hit the error

"Could not add the requested feature. The error is : the system cannot find the file specified. ".

My system32 does not seem to have the MSLLDP.sys.

Tried to use the install iso and still not able to find it. Any place I can download it from ?

2012 R2 - Checkpoint cleanup from failed VM backup

0

We recently had a network traffic / virtual switch issue crop up, due to VMQ being enabled and improperly configured on Broadcom 10GbE adapters.  While that failure occurred, our backup appliances were taking backups of VMs.  Because of lost network connectivity, the Hyper-V checkpoints used for those backups remain on some of our VMs.

These checkpoints do not have the usual "Delete Checkpoint" / "Delete Checkpoint Subtree" options available to them.  How do I remove them so the virtual disks are merged and back to a single VHDX per virtual disk?

Hyper-V host and all guests become unresponsive, event ID 153 fills system log

We have some Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V with dozens of VM running legacy systems and some departmental systems (XP, Win2003, Win2008, Win2012R2). They had worked for years without any problem.

In last December, we approve the monthly Windows Updates in the guest systems. In the next day, our IBM x3650 hosts presented disk errors and hanged, losing the disk array after restarted.

The host system logs had these records on Windows event viewer:

  • Megasas2 – ID 129 – reset to device, \device\raidport0, was issued.
  • Disk – ID 153 - the IO operation at logical block address 0x… for disk 2 (PDO: \device\0000005d) was retried.
  • Megasas2 – ID 11 - the driver detected a controller error on \device\raidport0

The systems running on HP DL160/360 were not affected. The problematic environment is IBM x3650 M4 HD 5460 configured to boot from internal LSI MegaRAID M5210e. We are using fixed VHDX.

All diagnosis made after reboot have no errors and the hosts work fine after reinstall until an updated guest is started. VM guests run normally in another environment.

With this, we have tried to reinstall the host system using all versions of LSI MEGASAS drivers that we can, with or without Windows updates in host OS. In all attempts, we have a server crash and disk array loss when a guest starts.

Has anyone experienced this problem? How can we confirm that this is a driver issue?

unable to manage vm from hyper-v Manager

Hi, all

I have a problem in the management of the machines in Hyper-V, when I try to open the VM console I get the following error:

an error occurred while attempting to launch the Virtual Machine
Connection application for the selected virtualmachine

however when I click on the settings I get this other:

Cannot access the settings for the selected virtual machine. the
computer "localhost" failed to perform the requested operation

I tried to add my user account in InitialStore.xml with AzMan,

with icacls “<virtualmachinefolder>” /grant “NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\<virtualmachineguid>”:F /T

but did not solve my problem.

Any idea?

tnx for now

Virtualising a 2008 Server to DR site

Hope someone has an easy answer to this...!

I have a Windows 2008 SP2 server (physical) that houses a critical SQL database and Apache Server. What I want to do is have another server at a DR site with Server 2012 r2 preferably and have a Virtual machine setup that will replicate the Windows 2008 server. I want to do this without changing anything on the physical server now.

I have looked at Double Take availability but the target DR server has to be 2008 sp2 as well. I just want the simplest way to do this where if the 2008 source goes down they can continue working at the DR site if need be. What do you suggest?

Firmware and Network Adapter Failed on Hyper-V

Hi Guys,

Currently I'm having trouble with Hyper-V. I have my hyper-v running for almost 8 months without any problem. However, suddenly, last Friday, after my Windows Server 2012 R2 performed an update. Suddenly, my Hyper-V did not working well.

When I went to Settings, I saw Firmware load failed and Network adapter load failed. I wanted to create Virtual Switch Manager, but it also gave me the error.

I remove Hyper-V role along with cleaning things. Then I add Hyper-V role in my server. However the problem still existed. I tried to create a new VM then I got the error: "Hyper-V encountered an error while configuring the network on New Virtual machine. Hyper-V encountered an error trying to access an object on computer 'localhost' because the object was not found. The object might have been deleted or you might not have a permission to perform the task. Verify that the Virtual Management service on the computer is running. If the service is running, try to perform the task again by using Run as Administrator."

I have checked all the listed error, and nothing change.

Then I went to the device manager and saw that there was a warning in Microsoft Hyper-V Network Switch Default Miniport.

For information, I have a ubuntu server running on the Hyper-V. Could you guys help me solve this?

Thank you in advance for all your help.

CimaList

Windows 8.1 Host gets randomly connected to the guest bridged ethernet virtual adapter and internet dies. Help!

Hello forum,

I am facing trouble with my Windows 8.1 Host workstation and Hyper-V with FreeBSD guest that acts as gateway and PXE Server on the physical ethernet.

I will try to explain the situation as much clean as possible. The Windows 8.1 Host workstation is connected to the internet through the Wireless card and internet to the guest is shared through Hyper-V Internal Only virtual interface and NAT from the Wireless card to the Hyper-V Internal Only interface.

The physical ethernet card at the other hand is shared to the guest through Hyper-V Bridge virtual interface, while on the FreeBSD guest side NAT is configured with IPFW and NATD from the virtual ethernet adapted that gets NAT from the Windows 8.1 Host workstation to the second virtual ethernet adaprter that is the one bridged with the Host physical ethernet. The DHCP Server on the FreeBSD guest is set on it's own subnet.

The issue is that when a client is connected to the physical ethernet it correctly gets the IP address from the FreeBSD gateway and is able to surf the web, but randomly and quite often both the client connected to the ethernet guest gateway gets disconnected along with the Windows 8.1 Host Workstation as the Host instead of remaining connected to the Wirleless gets connected to Hyper-V Bridge virtual interface.

A friend of mine told me to create a loopback interface and bind all the Hyper-V virtual adapters to the loopback interface and than NAT, however though beside installing the loopback interface I am not sure about how to proceed or if there's a better / more convenient way to do it.

Thanks

Where can I download Hyper V 2012 Core? Also is this already the version that can be used in production? Or still in Beta?

The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '5.0'

I have been searching for a fix for this issue for sometime.

The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '5.0'

and

The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'

this error have been posting on the host server 2008 R2, with a hyper-V running server 2012 R2, which is the eval version vhd from Microsoft.

I have tried the patch on the server 2008 R2 host and the nic delete and rescan option with varied reboots and such between each step of the process just to try every possible combination.

The error persists. Are there any other suggested solutions for fixing this problem. Also the drivers have all been updated along with the system firmware.

thanks,

Customer would like to user Hyper-V Replica, but their local site and DR site are different domains.

I know we need certificate. Is there any guide for this? I didn't find any configuration document, thanks.

Recover a VHD file from a formatted volume

Apologies if this is not the right forum.

So I was preparing a new server to host virtual machines. This is a Dell PE r710, Dual quad-core Xeon processors, 48 GB RAM, 2x 72 GB SAS drives. The server has Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 installed. iSCSI volumes hosted in a Dell EqualLogic SAN will host the actual virtual machines. We have 5 of these with similar setups, 3 of which are setup in a cluster. We have 2 set aside for additional projects. These will not be clustered as they will be hosting Lync virtual machines. Anyway we have 1 server setup and working with 2 VM's. The 2nd server will initially host 2 additional VM's. My goal was to format the iSCSI volume on the 2nd server and prepare it to host VMs. Except I accidentally logged into the 1st server (it's one of those days - I was interrupted as I was typing in the server name into Remote Desktop and it auto-populated the first server instead of the 2nd) and begin formatting the volume. Needless to say Lync stopped working and the VMs crashed. I immediately recognized my mistake and stopped the format but obviously it was too late.

I was hoping I could recover the data on that volume. We have a trial of this software called GetDataBack NTFS edition. It can recognize the volume ok and it can scan it and see files. Unfortunately it does not see actual VHD files. Instead what happens is that it sees the VHD files as separate volumes/partitions/etc and recovers the data within the VHD files. Not sure if it should do that, waiting on a response from Runtime. Kind of cool in a way if we ever needed to recover data within a VHD file. Anyway, does anyone know of software that can recover data from a volume but not scan the contents of the vhd file and include that data in the recovery? By this I mean I want to recover the actual VHD files, not the data within. Perhaps Virtual Machine Manager can do something? We do have it installed and manage our VM's with it. It would save us the trouble of re-deploying Lync. Apparently there's a lot of ADSI edits needed to undo the changes Lync did to AD/ Even migrating users back requires some ADSI edits. Trying to find those online someplace just in case.

We did not have backups yet of these 2 VMS as we just recently got them setup and have moved a few users over (some of us from IT). We still had some configuration/tweaking/adjustments to make before migrating the remainder of our OCS users. I know, I know, backup backup backup. The SAN we have can even do snapshots of iSCSI volumes but we didn't even think of enabling it yet.

Regardless in what happens with the VM's, I enabled Windows Server Backup and will immediately setup nightly backups once the VM's are operational again. I will also have our SAN admin enable snapshots, and just for laughs I will also enable snapshots on the individual VM's. We're also currently testing out Data Protection Manager. Kind of wish we already had it implemented....sigh...

Thanks,

Banging my head against a board with a nail in it...
