Process for Moving Hyper-V Folder?

$

I had a need to move the folder that I was storing my VMs on a replication server.  For example from D:\Hyper-V to E:\Hyper-V.  Needless to say, things did not go well and I ended up having to turn off, the turn on replication for each VM and do an initial copy even though the "old" VMDKs where in the replication folder.

Here's what I did, all from the replication server;

1) Paused Replication for each VM

2) Moved the folder

3) Under Hyper-V Settings on the replication server, change the VM and VM Disk folder path

4) Changed the virtual page file settings and a few other settings pointing to the old folder.

5) Resume replication

After the resume, there where errors in the log file about not being able to find the disks.  I rebooted the host machine after which the Hyper-V manager said it couldn't find the VMs at all and gave me little choice but to delete them.  The VMs on the replication server had never been failed over, testing or otherwise.

Suggestions?

TIA

What is the best free backup solution for Hyper-V R2/2012? CSV support is necessary

Hi,

I need so guidance, please.

I’m planning to deploy a free backup solution for my virtual environment and I need your advice. I have the following configuration:

Failover Cluster:

  • Two Dell Servers
  • OS: Windows 2012 STD
  • Each server has two AMD Opteron 4180 6C @ 2.6 GHZ
  • 16 GB – RAM (supports 256GB)
  • QNAP NAS (CSV)
  • It’s hosting a DC, an Exchange 2010 and soon a SharePoint 2013 VM

Standalone Hyper-V:

  • Dell Server
  • OS: Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter
  • It has two Intel Xeon E5520 @ 2.2 GHZ
  • 16 GB - RAM
  • It’s hosting 3 VMs

In my research I found these apps. All of them are limited in some way but they do the job:

  • Veeam Backup Free Edition v7
  • Altaro Hyper-V Backup
  • Unitrends Enterprise Backup
  • PHD Virtual Backup for Hyper-V
  • HV Backup from CodePlex
  • Windows Server Backup (WSB)

What is your experience with them? What would you recommend?

When it comes to money, which one is more affordable? (In case I want to buy the full version)

Thanks in advanced.

Slow VM performance 2012 R2

$

We've been having issues lately with slow VM performance on our 2012 R2 hosts. I'm curious if anyone else is encountering these issues or has any suggestions for resolution.

The slowness seems to occur when first logging into a VM either via RDP or Console. It takes awhile for the desktop to load and everything seems sluggish. Eventually after a few minutes the VM seems to become more responsive. When checking resources for the VMs the CPU and memory being used seem to be fine and it does not seem to be due to any strain on the VM. The hosts have plenty of resources as well with over 100GB of RAM free, the CPU ratio is 1:1 or less on the hosts, and CPU usage is usually 16% or less. The BIOS settings on the hosts have also been adjust so there are no c-states being used and speed-step has been turned off.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Any thoughts on what may be causing this?

RAID reconfiguration and change to GPT

Hi I have 2x HP DL 380 G6 Servers with Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter and Windows server 2012 R2 datacenter which are hyper V servers. Until now everything was fitting 2TB RAID 5 . Recently I added new HDDs and nothing above 2TB is recognized. I assume that it is because at the beginning I formatted drive as MBR. Now I assume that I need to convert to GPT.

The question is what would you do (or even better what you did and your experience in that manner)

Online conversion MBR to GPT with some software (if you have any proposal I would be thankful)

Offline conversion - to delete and recreate raid format as GPT .......

Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster nodes BSOD

We have an 11 node Hyper-V cluster running Server 2012 R2 with all latest updates.

We have had an ongoing issue with nodes BSODing or hanging.

Specs:

Hyper-V Nodes-

128-256GB of RAM per node, depending on generation. 12-32 cores. None of the machines are starving for resources. We have a cluster setup through SC VMM 2012 R2 that optimizes the VMs every 30 minutes. The vhd's for VM's sit in a SMB 3.0 share hosted by a SOFS cluster w/ Storage Spaces on a JBOD. Each Hyper-V host utilizes 2 x10Gb Intel NIC cards (either X520-T2 or X540-T2 depending on node) in a NIC team that is currently set to active-standy

We have tried:

adjusting VMQ settings so each NIC uses different cores

Switching NIC team from Active-Active to Active-Standby.

SCVMM Unable to assign the subnet because it overlaps an existing one

Hello,

We are using SCVMM to manage an Hyper-V cluster (2012 R2).

When we tried to create a new VLAN we got the following error:

Error (13638)
Unable to assign the subnet 172.22.172.128/25 because it overlaps with an existing subnet.

Recommended Action
Specify a non-overlapping subnet, and then try the operation again.

After revising the rest of subnets we haven't found any overlaps.

We have another VLAN defined with 172.22.172.0/25

I've checked with a CIDR calculator and the IP Range is not overlapped.

How can we define both VLANs with their corresponding Subnets?

Regards

How to import a virtual machine to a Hyper-V server by programme on Windows server 2012 ?

$

Hi

As we know, Hyper-V of Windows server 2012 can support importing a VM without exporting it first manually now.

So I try to code a programme to do it.

I use the method "ExportVirtualSystemEx" of  "Msvm_VirtualSystemManagementService". referenced byhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd379583(v=vs.85).aspx

But the error said that "You can import a virtual machine only if you used Hyper-V to create and export it."

Since we can import an unexported virtual machine in Hyper-V of windows server 2012 manually, so is there any API to support to do it by programme ?

Hello,

I have a server, which run the separting servers (1 windows 2008 r2 server core and the other is windows 2008 r2 enterprise). i tried to connect the server core from the hyper-v manager by entering the ip address of server core, it gave me this error:

"An error occurred while attempting to connect to server x.x.x.x. Check that the virtual machine management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server"

how to go about solving this error?

Lab

Hi

Ive been lucky enough to get hold of some decent lab kit and was looking for advice on how to set it up (as close to production as poss)

I have:

2 x Dell T620 with 6 NICs
1 x HP MicroServer Gen8 with 3 NICs
16 port Layer 3 switch
8 port Layer 2 switch

I was thinking about clustering the 2 T620 Hyper V hosts and using SMB 3.0 on Windows Server 2012 R2 installed on the HP micrsoservers.

Is it a good idea to team the NICs in the Microserver for performance ?
For my labs, I like to have separate VLANs in a vyatta virtual router so I can emulate different AD sites etc.

Any advice would be appreciated on this.

Question About Upgrading Server 2012 Hyper-V Datacenter to Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Datacenter

$

Good evening to all,

I currently have four hypervisor hosts in a failover cluster configuration. Each host is running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter. Presently three hosts are hosting our 56 virtual machines and the fourth is not hosting any. I also have a 5th server (R720) which has not been configured for Hyper-V.

I have been reading around, trying to prepare myself for the upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2 and I have come across some articles where the recommended actions are as follows:

1. Live Migrate virtual machines to a host running Server 2012 R2 Datacenter with Hyper-V configuration.

2. Once the VMs have been migrated, perform an in-place upgrade on the hosts running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter to Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter.

3. Verify that the configuration is good on the upgraded hosts and live migrate the VMs back to the upgraded Hypervisors.

My failover cluster does not host any Exchange or SQL Servers that would  be affected by the in-place upgrade.

What would be the downside of performing an in-place upgrade on a failover cluster? The production environment would not be affected as the guests would be live migrated to a temporary Hypervisor running Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter. I will also be scheduling downtime for this process.

Please advise and thanks in advance,

Virtual Machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running

$

Hi

I have installed Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition with a GUI. Default configuration, nothing special.

Whenever I want to turn on any machine inside of Hyper-V, the following error message appears:

"Virtual Machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running"

Whenever this happens, I run the following command:

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype Auto

and reboot the Server. After a reboot, all Virtual Machines can be started without Problems. However, as soon as I shut down the Server instead of rebooting it, the Problem happens again and I need to enter the command again and reboot.

Now my question is how to solve this Problem. I never had this Issue with Windows Server 2008 R2, maybe there are some differences regarding the Hypervisor in Server 2012. How can I make sure the Hypervisor is always on, even after a Shutdown? Thanks in Advance

New Hyper-V machine will not install guest OS from ISO image. Your PC ran into a problem.....

Thanks for any help in advance....

Here's the scenario.  I have a new Dell PE R630.  2012 Standard R2, fresh install.  All drivers and updates are installed.  When booting a newly created VM from an ISO of 2012 R2 Standard, attempting to install the OS on the VM, I get the blue screen of "Your PC has run into a problem" screen.  It just loops over and over again.

I've tried Generation 1 VM and Generation 2 VM.  I've disabled Secure Boot in "Bios" on the Generation 2 VM.  I've tried different ISO files.  I've tried disabling all integration services.  I've tried just about every single settings change there is to try with the same result.

In the Bios of the hardware R630, I checked that Virtualization is enabled.  I looked for any other settings that could be off, but don't see anything out of the ordinary.

I don't know what else to try. Thanks to anyone with input.

Hello!

Hope you can help me. I have two servers in a cluster, OS is MS Hyper-v 2012 (free edition). Few days ago both nodes started to fall down with BSOD. Memory dump analyze shows the following information:

DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION (133)
The DPC watchdog detected a prolonged run time at an IRQL of DISPATCH_LEVELor above.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000001, The system cumulatively spent an extended period of time at	DISPATCH_LEVEL or above. The offending component can usually be	identified with a stack trace.
Arg2: 0000000000001e0d, The watchdog period.
Arg3: 0000000000000000
Arg4: 0000000000000000

I'v found a hotfix KB2877237, but i cannot install it, during an installation i received a message, that update isnot applicable to my computer.

I've done as said in article (http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2877237/en-us#appliesto) - create a registry subkey, reboote server and then try to install update.

I wonder, how can i install this fix?

Thanks!

P.S. Sorry for my english, it's not my native language

Hyper-V failed to enable replication

Dear sir,

Problem : Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'xxx' : Cannot create a file when that file already exists. (0x800700B7). Virtual machine ID 27bxxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxx

Replication scenario : I am getting this error while i am enabling the replication again as it was disturbed so i need to re-enable it. But getting upper error.

Replication for other two VMs are running. But other replication of two VMs are stopped so i have removed the replication and deleted the VM folder from replica. still it is showing as above and not enabling the replication.

Please help.

Mitesh.

Initial replication paused after ~3 hours

I have been searching without any luck. If this has been asked before, please kindly give me the link to look at. Thanks.

Well the problem I am having is that when doing the initial sync for replication of large VMs in Hyper-V, after about 3 hours the sync will pause. I need to go in and manually resume the replication occasionally, otherwise the initial sync won't finish. This happens in all 7 of our sites. Replication is performed between 2 identical servers sitting next to each other which are connected with a 10GB link directly. Only less than 25% of space are used, so space is not an issue. When the replication was paused, Event 32086 and 32022 were recorded. However as long as you keep resuming the replication, it will finished eventually. From there on, everything works beautifully. We do have backup running at night, but if that is the case, it should fail whenever the backup is backing up that big VMs instead of failing after ~3 hours. Any idea what is stopping the replication?

21:34 - Event 32074: Hyper-V successfully enabled replication for primary virtual machine 'MSHVFILE1' (Virtual Machine ID AAF0AAC5-09E6-41F1-9629-154AE65DCF44).

00:19 - Event 32086: Hyper-V suspended replication for virtual machine 'MSHVFILE1' due to a non-recoverable failure. (Virtual Machine ID AAF0AAC5-09E6-41F1-9629-154AE65DCF44). Resume replication after correcting the failure.

00:19 - Event 32022: Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'MSHVFILE1': One or more arguments are invalid (0x80070057). (Virtual Machine ID AAF0AAC5-09E6-41F1-9629-154AE65DCF44)

What can and can't be converted to a VM template?

$

Just as the title says. Is there a list of Microsoft products that can not be templatized?

For instance, obviously we can templatize a Windows Server as long as we sysprep it.

My main question is about the software\roles\features installed on that server.

For example, Microsoft Exchange I can already safely assume that that can not be templatized because of how deeply its integrated into AD.

However how about other services such as IIS or SQL to name few?

Any feedback or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
