Hyper-v VHD mounting error
Hi everyone ,
Am new to virtualization , I have a windows server 2012 hyper-v server, I had successfully created the VM with windows server 2008 R2 as per my client requirement. In that VM I want to attach a VHD for storage inside the VM.For that I had turned off the VM and I had attached the VHD ,in that it attached successfully but when I started the VM the VHD displays but not accessible for use , it is not able to format also hitting the error "this process cannot proceed at this time, another process is running". I had checked all the background process but no solution also I had tried VHDX but yet I did not able to access this disk in VM in hyper-V 2012 .
please help !!!
VSS Writer failures during Hyper-V backup of VM with Oracle application installed
The job fails and a large number of VSS writers go into a 'Failed' state with the 'Last Error' showing as 'Timed out'. I then get 4 popups appear each referring to a 'temporary' drive which appears briefly in Disk Management with a RAW file system. These pops say "You need to format the disk in drive X: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" (where X: is replaced by the drive letter assigned to each 'temporary' drive).
The System event log is populated with a large number of warnings with Event 51, Disk, stating "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk<number>\DR<number> during a paging operation". There are also a few warnings for Ntfs (eventid 57) stating that "The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur."
Prior to these warnings there are 5 other warnings for partmgr (eventid 58) stating "The disk signature of disk <number x> is equal to the disk signatuire of disk <number y>" and 4 errors (eventid 1, VDS Basic Provider), "Unexpected failure. Error code: 490@01010004".
There is a script which is run to stop the Oracle application on the server and if this is run then the backups will complete successfully. We have been troubleshooting this by running a certain amount of the script and seeing which part affects the backup and it seems that if the Weblogic (wls_reports) service is stopped then the backup will succeed but if it is running then the backup will fail and the above symptoms occur.
Another point which may help is that there is a pre-production server which resides on a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V standalone server, has the same scripts and installation of Oracle but backs up without any issues.
I have experienced VSS writer failures before with VM backups but I have not seen this before. It is not intermittent and I can find no work around to alleviate the problem of having no backup (except stopping this service or shutting the server down, but as it is a production server this is not practical).
I have also posted this into the WSB forum under the following which may have further useful info:
VSS Writer failures during VM backup of server with Oracle application installed
If anyone has experienced this before or have any suggestions / advice it would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Chris
Hyper V Replication: The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open. (0x800704C8).
Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'XXXXXXX': The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section open. (0x800704C8).
I have seen this error discussed at length and the common culprit seems to be A/V. This is not the case for me. I got this error when checking replication health on a VM that fails replication almost daily. I usually resume it and it syncs data and continues to successfully replicate to the DR site until it fails a day or two later. Now, it won't resume. There is no A/V to blame and I am at a loss. I have a 5 node cluster on a san for my primary and a 3 node cluster on a san for my secondary. I have 43 VMs that replicate normally with very few failures. Not sure if this is any help, but we run BizTalk on this VM.

Windows 2012 Hyper-V - Enable Replication Failed due to iSCSI disks
I have successfully replicated all VM's, but 1 VM failed due to the following error:
Cannot enable replication for 'VM02' because one or mor iSCSI disks are attached to the virtual machine.
What doesn't make sense is I am able to do a Live-Migration between Hyper-V host without a single issue, but you can't replicate!
Here is the VM / Host configuration:
The VM has a SAN connected via iSCSI Initiator. I am not using a Virtual Target or VHD's. There are 2 Volumes on the SAN and the Volumes are bound as drives E & G. The SAN is connected to a dedicated switch and BOTH of my Hyper-V hosts have 2 NIC's each connected to the dedicated switch. BOTH Hyper-V hosts have identical Virtual Switches named SAN1 & SAN2 so no matter what host the VM resides on it can connect to the physical SAN.
Merging avhdx files with vhdx files while deleting snapshots
Hi,
We are running one virtual machine win 2012 std. Recently, we deleted the snapshot of this vm in hyper-v manager as the drive space was running out of space. After that, the merging process was running for the VM. Once, the merging was completed, the sql database running inside got corrupted. Please explain what actually happens during this merging process and how can we recover our db.

Hyper-V on Windows Server Core
Hi, Im new to the Windows Server 2012 Core edition. But I have found out that I can install Hyper-v on a Windows Server Core edition.
I guess its possible to run Core edition with Hyper-V installed on a laptop. But can I run the VM´s with GUI directly on the Core edition or do I need another computer to manage the VM´s with GUI installed on the hyper-v host?
Hyper-V 2008 VM Error - "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation"
Hi
Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Hyper-V Cluster (3 Hosts in Cluster).
One of my Server 2008 R2 Standard VM's keeps rebooting itself every 3 minutes.
Got the VM into Safe Mode with Networking, stays up no problem. In Event Logs, there are thousands of Disk Event ID 51 errors ("An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation").
Initially I thought this was a Hardware issue, but this is not the case (running on HP Storageworks MSA2312i SAN). All disks fine, all firmware on both Disks and Controllers upgraded to latest version.
Any ideas what may be causing this? The error is not present in any other VM's. Moving the VM across different hosts does not resolve the issue. Neither does moving the vhd files to different areas on the SAN.
Thanks
Hyper-V Storage Live Migration: Copy instead of move?
Have to perform VM migration from VM's that resides on a CSV with an underlying RAID 5 volume to another CSV with an underlying RAID 50 volume. Could perform the operation without any error from the failover cluster manager (move - virtual machine storge) on the VM.
The problem is that when I check C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1 (the old place of the VM) and C:\ClusterStorage\Volume2 (the new place of the VM), all VM files are still in both locations! Apparently, a "Copy" operation instead of a "move" operation was performed.
- Why are the source files not have been deleted after the successful storage migration?
- Is it safe to manually delete the VM files in C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1?
Thank you in advance for any help.

Monitor Replication Health in Failover Cluster Manager?
One Cluster contains all production VM's.The second cluster is on another location and is intended only for HA purposes. All production VM's from the first clusters should be replicated to the other cluster.
What is the best way to monitor the replication health of all VM's? In Failover Cluster manager, it's not possible to add a column "replication health" to the "roles" window. It's not practical to click on every VM to view the replication health. In Hyper-V Manager, it's easy to add "replication health" to the virtual machine window, but clicking on every host to verify the replication health is not very practical as well.
Thank you in advance for any hint (I know that we could use SCOM or something similar, but these complex tools are out of scope).

Now I want to configure my DR site for VM replication and i have below doubts on the same
1) computer name (will it be same as primary site)
2) what configuration do i need like network , memory OS etc..
3) Do i need to shutdown o/s ?
4) will my entire vm including storage will get replicate in to the same ??

vlan issue
hi,
i want to setup small lab for testing, with hyperv and cloudstack.
i have two servers, windows 2012r2 hyperv role. i have two nic on both server. one nic is directly connected to other directly without router
now i want to setup vlan tagging option, for cloudstack hyperv networking.
for that i have setup nic teaming with one nic with default and created external switch with teaming nic.
now upto this everything works fine.
problem is if i enable vlan id with "2" and in vm also , then external switch and vms is not getting internet,
Please help

Hyper-V Host Backup failure. 2012 R2 Host: VSS Error 0x800423f4, 2008 R2 VM:
I have a new Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Server host running 6 VM's. The host-based wbadmin (Windows Backup) seems to be running fine for all VM's except one. Backing up the server produces the following results for this VM running Windows 2008 R2:
- Host wbadmin log: Detailed error: ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has occurred: (0x800423f4) The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error is likely to reoccur.
- VM System Event Viewer: Event ID: 1, VDS Basic Provider, Unexpected failure. Error code: 490@01010004 (and also D@01010004)
- VM System Event Viewer: Event ID 58, partmgr. The disk signature of disk x is equal to the disk signature of disk x.
- VM: After a failed backup I see console messages about drives needing formatted. This is, from what I understand, part of the Hyper-V VSS backup trying to create VSS volumes on the VM.
I've tried:
- Rebooting the VM.
- Running the backup from different Hyper-V hosts (shared-nothing live migrations to move the VM).
- Making sure that Integration Services on VM are up-to-date.
The "problem" VM is running Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, Symantec Endpoint Manager, and Symantec Endpoint client. Before the backup occurs all VSS Writers are "Stable" with "No error".
Can anyone help me by pointing me in the right direction to try? I'd certainly appreciate it!
Thanks!
No network communication after automatic start
We have one Hyper-v host on Windows Server 2012 R2. With 10 virtual machines. These machines are Windows server 2012, 2008 and 2003. All VM are setup to automatic start. Two of them are DC, so starts with 0 delay. The others have delay of 300 seconds.
After an unplanned restart some machines have no network communication. the settings remains, but can not communicate them from outside. After swapped between No connected and previous virtual switch the network started working. All others machines present no networks problems.
Virtual switch was set on a network teaming with 3 phisycal network cards.
Hyper-V host is up to date.
Are there some one who is experiencing the same as us? Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Removing Snapshot Files
Hi All,
One of my VM's was written off by the Panda AV issue. I have restored the affected VM and all is well.
However, I am looking to clean things up a little. And have a load of snapshot files from before the restore which were taken as part of the resolution process.
These snapshots don't show under the vm itself, so I though I could delete all the snapshots though HyperV manager, and manually delete what is left in the snapshot directory.
When I try this I get a file in use error, so left as is. Restarted Hyper V service and tried again with same result.
Anybody know the best way to do this, as there is a fair amount of GB to remove.
Kind Regards

What is faster to Upload new VMs into a Hyper-V Ws2012 R2
Hi all,
whch is faster to transfer approx. 7 VMs totally ~ 180GB to a new HYper-V on WS2012R2
Method A
Import the VMs from the USB drive and keep them mounted on the USB drive
Then use the Move or migration in Hyper-V and move them to faster Fixed Disk on the Server..?
Method B
Using Xcopy transfer them to the Fixed Disk, and then do the normal import
This server only supports USB 2.0
Many thanks in advance
