"Failed to mount the virtual hard disk" error in Hyper-V event log; VSS back-up fails

$

I'm getting the following error event while attempting to back-up a running VM. The guest and host are both fully-patched R2. If I turn off the guest OS before doing the back-up it works fine, but we'd rather avoid that. I've tried starting and stopping the VSS service, uninstalling and reinstalling Hyper-V, and uninstalling and reinstalling Windows Back-up. The event also causes the Hyper-V VSS writer to set the following status:

Writer name: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer'
   Writer Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}
   Writer Instance Id: {6f53836f-8893-4e77-89de-d9d16014bc74}
   State: [5] Waiting for completion
   Last error: Retryable error

Any guidance? Thanks.

Update: I've tried everything I can think of or find online. Reboot, defrag the volume, full chkdsk, delete existing snapshots. Neither SQL nor Exchange are installed on this system. These were clean OS installs, not upgrades. The correct OS partition is marked as Active. I don't see any relevant KBs available for R2. Doing a clean install of the host seems like a bad idea at this point, because what we're doing seems to be supported, and I'd like to get to the bottom. But I'm stuck. Is there additional logging info available from the Hyper-V VSS writer?

Ubuntu Server guest blank screen/initramfs problems

I'm trying to set up an Ubuntu server guest on a Server 2012 Hyper-V host. I've tried both 12.10 and 12.04 but I've faced various issues with both releases.

The host machine is a completely fresh installation. The guest machine is also a completely fresh installation of ubuntu server (no gui) with openssh server and LAMP. Nothing else, the only configuration is of a static IP address.

The first issue is the guest getting stuck during installation with either a blinking cursor or a completely blank screen. There seems to be some cpu usage, fluctuating between 0-30%, but no change even after an hour. This is rare but it happened with both 12.10 and 12.04. Rebooting the guest and restarting installation solved the problem.

The second issue is a blank screen on boot. Grub flashes for half a second and then the guest's screen goes blank. This happens on almost every restart of the guest. When I restart the guest after this happens, it boots successfully.

The third and most serious issue is at some point the guest machine only boots to initramfs with the message "Gave up looking for root device". After that I can't get it boot normally.

I've tried reinstalling Server 2012 on another hdd. I have tried installing both versions of Ubuntu numerous times with the same issues. I am using the HP N40l microserver, with an added 2gb of ram (matching second stick as the stock), and only the stock 250gb hdd.

Any ideas, please?:)

Is there a non-persistent equivalent in HyperV?

We are using ESXi and we are considering switching over to Hyper-V 2012 in one of our lab environments. One of the features of ESXi we completely depend on is non-persistent disks. Basically when we shut the VM down, all changes are discarded. Before going virtual, we used to use a product called deepfreeze to accomplish this.

So is there a way to automatically discard disk changes every time you shutdown or reboot a VM in Hyper-V? Automatically revert to snapshot then re-snapshot the machine?

The VM has two hard drives. A System Drive and a Data Drive. I only want to revert the system drive.

Hyper-V Server - Processor Upgrade Recommendations\Thoughts\Experiences

Hi Everyone,

I have an IBM x3550 M3 server with a total of two processors installed (maximum slots 2). The processors installed are Intel Xeon Processor X5650 6Cores_12 Threads @ 2.66GHz 12MB Cache 1333MHz 95w.
I'm interested to know how much more beneficial will it be for me to upgrade to one of the two following processors;

  • Intel Xeon Processor X5675 6C      3.06GHz 12MB Cache 1333MHz 95W
  • Intel Xeon Processor X5690 6C      3.46GHz 12MB Cache 1333MHz 130w

I'm currently running a Hyper-V server with 20 VMs in total. s it worthwhile upgrading incase I decided to increase the VM deployment from 20 to 40 VMs?

My curiosity\question is - by upgrading  to any of the processors listed are there any avantegous of doing the upgrade?

In terms of other components like RAM and I/O there is plenty of room to accommodate the 40 VMs.

Let me know your recommendations\thoughts and or if anyone has already done something similar to this.

Best Setup for Dual OS Home machine with Windows Server And Windows Client Running in Parallel?

$

Currently I'm planning a machine that I want to use to house two Operatin Systems.  Right now, here are my requirements.

  • Windows Client appears to run in the foreground like a normal client machine.
  • windows server running in the background (likely accessed through remote management/remote desktop).
  • The windows client machine is accessible through RemoteFX for use while away from the desk.

Here is my current plan for hardware

  • Core i5 machine with 16GB Ram (expandable to 32GB)
  • SSD boot disk for Core OS/virutal machines
  • 4 HHDs in RAID for data/backup

Here is my current plan for the setup

  • Hyper-V Server 2012 Core
  • Window Client Virtual Machine Running through Hyper-V Server
  • Windows Server Virtual Machine Running through Hyper-V Server

So Basically, what i'm wondering is this. Is this a feasible setup? I haven't used these tools before so I don't know the capabilities. Can Hyper-V Server Run Windows Client? Can my windows Server sill manage everything? What is required for making my Client OS accesible through Remote FX?

Is it possible to remotely manage non-domain Hyper-V 2012 from Win8?

Does anyone know how to manage Hyper-V 2012 Server that is in a workgroup from a Win8 machine that is logged in with a different credential than is used for remote management on the Hyper-V server? I spent a couple days futilely trying to get the Win8 Hyper-V Manager to connect to my workgroup 2012 Hyper-V server and finally decided it was time to ask for help.

Hyper-V Server 2012 with Zambezi AMD FX-Series - Hardware assisted virtualization not present

$

Hi, I'm trying to set up VDI across Windows Server 2012 VMs running on Hyper-V 2012.

The wizard's compatibility check for the Virtualization Hostserver failed with "Hardware-assisted virtualization is not present on the server".

I'm running an FX-8120 CPU and have the ASUS M5A97 motherboard.

I know I'm supposed to enable No-Execute (Hyper-V Hardware Considerations) but Icannotfind that or any other synonyms of it in my motherboards UEFI BIOS (NX, XD, EVP, XN... nothing).

I found this:

PAE/NX/SSE2 Support Requirement Guide for Windows 8

which in short says "Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 requires that systems must have processors that support NX, and NX must be turned on for important security safeguards to function effectively and avoid potential security vulnerabilities."

this leads me to believe NX is on by default if I was able to get this far and install Hyper-V 2012 and Windows Server 2012..

Also I tried to disable AVX in cmd with "bcdedit /set xsavedisable 1". Did not resolve

My processor is Zambezi FX-8120 and also supports RVI/SLAT:
processor: Newegg Processor FX-8120
support proof: AMD Processors with Rapid Virtualization Indexing Required to Run Hyper-V in Windows® 8

What going on here? I bought this CPU specifically after I had the same problems with an older AMD Athelon II and made sure to buy one with AMD-V and RVI.
I'm aware my MB is not a server motherboard, but I was trying to spend as little as possible to retrofit my home rig into a lab deployment. I've read a VMWare thread where someone successfully set up nested virtualization using ESXi5 with an FX-8120 and a cheap $65 Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 ... Hyper-V has been a pain the whole way through from setting up remote management and now this.

If someone suspects it's my MB can you also make a suggestion as to what features I should be looking for in a new one? NX, IOMMU, some other virtualization feature?
If you've had  similar set up, perhaps recommend an MB? Not looking to spend that much $150 max.

Thank you

Server 2012: Enabling Hyper-V Replica Site to Site Failure

$

We recently installed Server 2012 Data Center with Hyper-V on a two servers at two different sites: Main Site and DR Site.

Hyper-V is enabled and working great at both sites on these servers and now trying to configure Hyper-V replica gets us this result:

Some of the items we made sure to verify:

  • Enabled Firewall rules for inbound rules on Port 80. (Hyper-V Replica HTTP Listener) (Both Sites)
  • Modified ASA Firewall for HTTP port 80 and can run a packet trace from site to site.
  • Ping works fine in communication between servers
  • Both are in the same domain
  • Within the same Trust Group
  • Same default storage location and can view the folder from each location

So I am not sure what we are missing, but is there another port that needs to be open if we are going through HTTP because after starting to configuring the replica another message shows that "Could not get the configuration details of the specified server."

Searching around on TechNet didn't show any resolution for this, but if anyone would have some additional tips to try to troubleshoot that would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

unable to add an iSNS to Hyper-V?

Hi,

I try to setup my iSNS server into all my iscsi systems.
this works fine on all of then except my Hyper-V server.
I type this command:

C:\>iscsicli addisnsserver <my isns server name>

and the result is:
Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Version 6.0 Build 6000
The operation cannot be performed since the Internet Storage Name Server (iSNS) firewall exception has not been enabled.

so I try to enable  this firewall exception without success.
disabling the firewall himself doesn't help me too.

any idea how I can do this?

thanks.

Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device

I have a Server 2008 64bit physical server that I am trying to convert to a Hyper-V VM. I used disk2vhd from Microsoft to create the VM. When I try to start the VM on a Server 2012 host I get the message "Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device"

Any suggestions as to how to make the created VM boot?

Hyper-V Core and RRAS

Hello

Is it possible to manage RRAS through an MMC snap-in on Hyper-V 2012 Core Server?

It seams impossible even to be able to start this service. I think I need this in order to test replication when the external IP addresses of 2 VM's are on different subnets and IP virtulization does not seam a feasible option. So, I think I have to use port forwarding through NAT on RRAS.

I welcome your advise on this issue, as well as possible alternative strategies...

Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Cluster step by step

Hi All,

I know this question has already been posted before and the answer was  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2012/05/01/10299698.aspx this blog website, My question is slightly different:

1. Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Cluster and Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Cluster deployment is same (is it true)

2. Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Cluster TechNet states that i should have a dedicated network adapter for Management, CSV, Live Migration and Virtual Machines which means at least 4 network adapters should be there, so in windows Server 2012 does it apply the same, if yes can you please share the technet article for 2012 which states the same

3. In Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Cluster TechNet states that every network adapter has its own metric, the management network starts with 10,000 and csv (heartbeat) starts with 1000, does it apply the same in 2012 hyper-v cluster, if yes please shre the technet article,

4. if i need to change the metric of csv or live migration network adapter there is a power shell command or it can be done by GUI

5. In 2008 R2 hyper-v cluster live migration network preference is always first so that vms are moved through live migration network adapter and the second preference is management and third one is csv, does it still applies the same or some thing is changed here in 2012 hyper-v server.

Thanks in advance

Trying to find where to post a BUG in Hyper-V on Win 8 and Win 2012 Server

Trying to find where to post a BUIG in Hyper-V on Win 8 and Win 2012 Server, not looking to pay Microsoft for a support case since I have identify an issue.

Here is the Info:

I can now confirm Issues with  hard drives being recognized by Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V, while using the 5th SATA port ( RED SATA  eSATA 4) on Intel DH67BL & DH67GD  motherboards. Windows Server can recognize the drive and will operate properly, but Hyper-V has issues recognizing the hard drive and showing ""any"" folder structure on any hard drive connected to the SATA (eSATA) port on the motherboard.

When in Hyper-V manager or even SCVMM 2012, HYper-V only sees the drive letter, and SCVMM 2012 does even see the drive letter.

This issue is being experienced on two Windows 2012 Servers, using Intel motherboard, and also issues have been experienced with Win 8 Pro with Hyper-V and drives.

So this means there are three Intel motherboards experiencing issues when using the internal 5th SATA (eSATA port - internal Red ëSATA Connector on Board).

I suspect other users who are having VHD creation issues on drives are also working on newer motherboards.

Note: This issue is was not experienced when using Windows Server 2008R2 and SCVMM 2008R2

Hope this helps.......

How many CAL's for a virualized environment with Windows Server 2012

$

Okay, so I've been searching all over the Internet including the technet library and I still am not clear on how licensing works with Hyper-V virtualization.

Basically I have one physical server running Windows Server 2012, A Windows Server 2012 Standard License, and 20 Windows Server 2012 CAL's. I understand that I can only have 2 VM's with the standard edition.  But what I'm trying to figure out is how many CAL's I need.

If I have 20 CAL's and I'm only using 15 with the one server, can I install another virtual machine and use the other 5 CAL's?
