MPIO Dual Controller ALUA BSOD in Cluster

$

Hello,

I'm having issues with iSCSI MPIO on ALUA-enabled dual controller SAN (Promise VessR2600tiD).
The device is 2012 R2 certified (http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/item.aspx?idItem=752f327a-05c8-ec2a-95c5-671460e6b7a9&bCatID=1282) with current firmware. We are running VM workloads on 2 LUN's atm over dedicated 10G iSCSI connections (Intel X540-T1/T2 NIC's) in a 2-node Hyper-V cluster.

The NIC's have stripped down protocol support (ipv4 only with jumbo frames) and dedicated subnet.
Everything works fine until mpio kicks in. When I try to failover a controller on the SAN (change preferred one), I get strange BSOD's msdsm.sys.

What's stranger is that I basically tried this recently:
2x Hyper-V servers in a cluster, no MPIO, on LUN1, LUN2 on CTRL 1
1x STANDALONE server WITH MPIO on LUN3 (Lun masking turned on) on CTRL2

If I change ALUA preference on LUN3 -> CTRL1, Hyper-V cluster servers get BSOD, not the standalone server. Also,
on the standalone server, the Path State stays Active/Optimized, although TPG State changes to standby and the second portal becomes active.

The vendor wasn't able to help me and I'm kinda at wit's end here. It seems that no matter what server I try to setup MPIO on, the cluster servers get BSOD, even if the server with MPIO is not a part of the cluster nor it shares LUN with the cluster. There's nothing in the server nor SAN logs.

Hyper-V Replication - Intitial Replication Option Using Existing Virtual Machine

Hi Members,

I want to enable Hyper-V Replication from Hyper-V Cluster (Primary Site) to Hyper-V Standalone (DR Site) all required settings successfully configured like Hyper-V Replica Broker ,AD Object and others.

I Tested Replication works fine When I Start With “INITIAL REPLICATION” method using Network.

I have very limited bandwidth between Primary Site and DR Site and VM which I want to replicate are very large (for initial Replication Method)

So I want to use third method of replication “Use Existing ….”

For this I copy whole folder named as Windows 8.1 which contains VM configuration Files,VHD’s

When I start replication wizard it automatically creates folder named as “HYPER-V Replica”

Under this folder I Pasted My VHD on Virtual Disk Folder and same for Virtual Machine folder.

But Still Got Error Screen Shot Attached

I Also Tried From Replica Server (To Import But it was unable to locate required folder)

Screen Shots Attached.

Snapshot - General access denied error (0x80070005).

Hi,

When trying to snapshot a VM i get:

'vm1' could not create auto virtual hard disk C:\Virtual Guests\vm1\vm1_B4F0796F-3EB5-4810-BA04-CA8E1DA3774C.avhd: General access denied error (0x80070005). (Virtual machine ID AE6E811F-A056-4A1C-A501-287914A13021)

I looked around on the web, and found that the 'Virtual Machines' group isn't on my server, and therefor isnt on the security tab for my snapshot folder.

Taken from this post: http://joesitblogandotherstuff.blogspot.com/2010/01/could-not-initiate-snapshot-operation.html

How do I manually create the 'Virtual Machines' group, so I can make snapshots work again?

Virtual disk layout for fault tolerance / best VM performance

$

I can't seem to find anything definitive, when it comes to fault tolerance and best performance considerations for VM storage kept on SMB 3.0 shares within a clustered storage space setup. Most things I've read suggest a 2-way mirror layout for the initial virtual disk that will be used to hold the shares.

I'd feel a lot more comfortable baking in a 3-way mirror to further resiliency across my disk array, but I'm wondering what a good approach would be, following what I've read about using a 2-way mirror.

Our planned setup will be using 2 physical nodes connected to a JBOD, with SoFS clustering and mirrored storage spaces.

Many thanks.

Storage migration not possible after removing shared vhdx

I have two VM:s in VMM that I use for tests. Just completed a test of shared storage and removed the shared disks from WSFC in the cluster and then after shutting down the nodes I removed the disks from the VM:s using powershell. Now when I try to storage migrate the VM:s (that no longer have any shared storage, HasSharedStorage = false) it says "The specified path is not a valid folder path on <host>". VMM 2012 R2 UR5. Other VM's migrate fine - just the two that had shared storage that doesn't

GetVirtualSystemThumbnailImage with VBScript

Hey All!

I am writing an HTA application (some of you may have seen some of my other questions), and I am now stuck on the thumbnail image of a VM. I am taking the VBScript example from here:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc160707(v=vs.85).aspx

with slight modifications for root\virtualization\v2, but when I run it, all I get is a WScript.Echo "Done" and a log file with "Done" in it. I see two subs in the example to write the image (SaveThumbnailImage and PrintThumbnailImage), but they are never actually called in the script. Any attempts to call those with OutParams.ImageData error with a type mismatch.

Particularly, if you copy and paste the example, the mismatch error is on line 80 with the "stream.WriteText text".

Are the [] brackets shown in the above link required when passing the data to the sub? As in: SaveThumbnailImage(objOutParams.ImageData[])

I have seen the PowerShell examples, and I can get the PowerShell example to work, but being an HTA, I need this to work with VBScript. Has anybody successfully gotten a VBScript to output a thumbnail image? Any tips on getting this to work?

Thank you in advace!

Eric

EDIT: Tried adding the brackets [], but it throws an error "Expected ')'". Doesn't seem to like the brackets.

What exactly is being created with the ADODB.stream? Is that the issue? This one is new to me. I have .NET 3.5 and .NET 4.5 installed.

BSOD Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 - Critical Process Died

$

I am running Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (Server Core) on three servers.  Unfortunately none of them have identical hardware configurations - thus I can't easily tell if there is some compatibility problem between a Microsoft update and my hardware. All three systems are setup to automatically download updates.

A few weeks ago one of the systems seemed to be rebooting regularly.  After connecting a monitor I saw a BSOD with a message "Critical Process Died."  I'm not 100% certain of this, but these BSOD reboot problems seemed to have started shortly after getting a recent automatic update(s)?

I have checked the Event Logs and looked for dumps or other logs, but haven't been able to locate anything that explained the chronic BSOD failures on the one server.  Nor have I found anything that tells me what critical process died.

After various attempts to fix the problem were unsuccessful I reformatted the drive and reinstalled Hyper-V Server 2012 R2.  The server seems to work okay with the intial re-installation of Hyper-V Server 2012 R2.

I configured the server and then start to download all the availlable patches.  After one (or two?) reboots I typically find only a single patch (KB2919355) left to be installed.  This seems to be the equivalent of the Windows 8.1 Update (and thus a required patch to get further patches)?

Typically when I try and install KB2919355 I'll get a BSOD during the installation process.  I have also tried rebooting and looking for new patches, after the initial BSOD, and I'll get a list of some other patches.  KB2919355 seems to be a group of fixes?  And it seems as though some part of KB2919355 got installed, but then I get the BSOD.  And after the reboot what I'm seeing is the list of the group (from KB2919355) which did not get installed due to the BSOD?

I continued on (rebooting if a BSOD occurred) and eventually got all patches installed.  But I still get occasional BSOD failures with Critical Process Died message.  The message says something about writing information to disk with 0% complete, but that number never changes.  After a while the system simply reboots.

After all patches were installed I came across the following commands and tried to use them.  The first time I attempted to use DISM I got a BSOD failure.  But I was eventually able to run both SFC and DISM.  Neither seemed to show any problems were found.

sfc /scannow

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

In one (of several) attempts to re-install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 I made sure my BIOS was updated to the latest version and got the most recent driver for my Areca ARC-1222 controller.  Of the three servers one has the Areca RAID6 controller, one has an LSI RAID6 controller, and one is using Storage Spaces.  The LSI and SS systems have the same type of CPU, motherboard, and RAM. My Areca system has an older type of CPU, motherboard, and RAM.

This morning I tried to re-install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 again.  After the first group of patches were installed and a reboot I got another large list of patches.  I don't recall off hand if this was the exact same order of patches that happened on prior attempts or not?  I had thought there was only one large list of patches, reboot, and then KB2919355 was the only remaining patch?  While trying to install this second large list of patches I got a BSOD.  I didn't notice whether or not KB2919355 was included in this second list or not?  These kind of inconsistent results/observations are why I'm not 100% sure that KB2919355 is causing my BSOD problems.  I believe KB2919355 is installed and working on my other two systems? Which might imply some type of a hardware problem with this system?

Unless someone has a better suggestion then later tonight I'll try re-installing Hyper-V Sever 2012 R2 again, but stopping before KB2919355 gets installed.  It seems to me the system is stable at this point, but I'll leave it that way for several hours to verify I don't get another BSOD.  If I don't have any problems without KB2919355 installed that implies my hardware is okay.  Although I suppose there could be some incompatibility between KB2919355 and my hardware and not simply a software problem with KB2919355?

I would appreciate suggestions others may have on how to rectify this problem.  Especially any thoughts on how to determine what critical process is failing and causing the BSOD.

I did come across a webpage about a whole list of symptoms related to KB2919355, but my specific problem didn't seem to be mentioned.

Error (2903) During initial replication.

$

During the testing stages of my Hyper V replication, I used 2 minor VMs for testing. Both had many failed attempts as I worked out the bugs with no small amount of help from the TechNet community. I now have good, solid replication occurring between my VMs at the primary site and the secondary. However, the two that I used as lab rats are less than happy to do an initial replication. I noticed in VMM that one of them is referencing a volume (Volume 3) that doesn't exist anymore. I have removed replication. Why does this VM still look for this volume? I have attempted replication with the broker set to a current volume without success. Is there a way to fix this without deleting and rebuilding the VM?

VM replication setup fails 0x80070032

I am attempting to setup replication between two 2012 R2 hosts. When I enable replication I receive an error message:

Hyper-v failed to perform reverse replication

Hyper-v failed to perform reverse replication for 'vm name': The request is not supported, (0x80070032)

I have tried a new replication and replication to a restored replica VM.  I created a small test VM and was able to replicate it fine between the hosts.

I was trying to replicate to a drive with only 16.5 GB free after the restored VM and thought space might be an issue.  I moved the restored VM to a drive with 100 GB free.  I also checked and the source host has 134 GB free on the drive that has the VM.

Any help is appreciated.

The Famously Annoying "Slow" Hyper-V Guest (Running RDS)

$

Hi All,

Over the past several weeks, have had a handful of users complaining slowness at random times when connected across a WAN to an 2008 R2 RDS Server running on Hyper-V.  Users in the same location as Hyper-V's server don't see any slowness (though also don't use RDS, just the VM that does DC/DNS/File Sharing).

Let me know what else maybe be useful/needed info of course, but some quick specs:

Host Server (2012 R2 Standard):

  • HP ML350p Gen8;
  • (2) Xeon ES-2620 @ 2Ghz;
  • 56GB RAM;
  • Smart Array P420i controller w/:
    (6) HP 500GB 7.2K 6G SAS drives in RAID-10 Config;
    2 Volumes: 1 “System” of 100GB (69% free); 1 “Data” of 1.27TB (59% free);

VMs:

VM1– [DC, DNS, File Shares, etc;]

  •                    OS = Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
  •                    vCPU = 1
  •                    RAM (dynamic) = 16GB (startup); 4GB (min); 1TB (max); 4GB (assigned);

VM2– [RDS]

  •                    OS = Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
  •                    vCPU = 2
  •                    RAM (dynamic) = 32GB (startup); 4GB (min); 1TB (max); 4GB (assigned);
  •                    Apps = MS Office 2013 (primarily Word, Outlook, Excel); Avionte (run via Citrix web app, managed by 3<sup>rd</sup> party); Chrome; Firefox; Skype; Adobe Reader XI;
  • About 11 Users

Network/Internet:

  •                    Host server location = 5meg up/down
  •                    RDS user location = Unsure as it is a location managed by a shared building IT department who are not the most communicative, and each company has their own office(s), but best guess is min. 20meg up/down if not faster.

Not long after standing up this server and getting everyone connected, the RDS users, all in another city, complained of slowness.  Ultimately, kicking up the internet speed to 5meg up/down in the host server’s location quelled that for quite a long time.  Only recently, in the past several weeks have people again started complaining of slowness.

To further muddy the waters, some users report no/minor slowness while others report “moving at snail’s pace”, or “so-and-so can barely use their remote desktop” – all while connected at the same time.

I’ve checked internet speed at the reported times of slowness and the host city will be at 4.5meg up/down, while the RDS user’s location will show 22meg down/45meg up.  So that doesn’t seem to be the issue.

I’m in a different city than either location, and when remoting in to either the Hyper-V host or the RDS server via LogMeIn I see no slowness whatsoever – snappy and responsive all the way around.  If I connect via RDP as Admin and use Word or Outlook, it can sometimes be a tad slow, but nothing as horrible as is described.  However, I don't have the same day-to-day tasks to test out that the users do.  All the same, beyond some general "office documents" type stuff, fairly sure they are not doing anything power user/resource intensive.  What I've seen in Task Manager/Resource Monitor, appears to support that - making it all the more confusing.

I’m the only admin, and can confirm no changes beyond HP and Windows updates, and general troubleshooting (e.g. disabling offload on the NICs, applying hotfix in regards to Inactive TS Port issue - http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2012/03/06/performance-issues-due-to-inactive-terminal-server-ports.aspx, etc;)

All users connecting via RDS are running Windows 7 x64 on fairly recent machines.  I've asked them to try to keep a close eye on when things slow down/speed up - for example, when someone logs out of the remote session, leaves for the day, etc; but they're not always the most observant.

Beyond that, please let me know what else I should be looking for/at, or can further detail for you - and/or if you notice anything above that seems misconfigged somehow.

Thanks a million, driving us all mad!

Virtual SAN Manager Configuration

I am trying to configure Virtual SAN Manager for the first time and whenever I attempt to start the virtual machine that I have the Fiber Channel Adapter connected to I get an error which I will display later.

The configuration is as follows: I have a host system running Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V, attached to that host is a HP MSA 2040 that is connected through a Single Path Fiber Channel connection with an 8GB/s PCI controller card.

Below is the error message I receive when I attempt to start the VM with the Fiber Channel Adapter added to the VM.

Copy between host and guest

I'm a student at a Uni and I'm currently learning the basics about Windows Server Domain Controllers.

One of the assignments required us to use a excel spreadsheet file to setup users in the domain, I tried copying this file from my host to the virtual machine but I couldn't do this(I also tried drag and drop).

Additionally I can't copy text trough the clipboard in and out of the VM. (the only options that work are the ones from the clipboard menu item; type clipboard text and capture screen)
My teacher told me this should be possible by enabling the integration services, but I had already done so.

Both the VM and the host system run on Windows Server 2012 R2 with the latest updates.
My teacher didn't know why I couldn't do this since according to him it should be possible with Hyper-V on server 2012 R2.

I should mention that I was connected trough remote desktop with the host system(which is a server at OVH), I was able to copy and paste trough the RDP session between my client and the host, but not to the VM's.

2.

I believe the virtual machine connection also uses the RDP protcol, so I'd like to know if its possible to connect to the virtual machine directly trough RDP (without having the virtual machine attached to the internet)

3.

I saw that there are some settings in the device manager for the network adapter, but I couldn't find out what forwarding optimization is supposed to do and I was also wondering if this setting can be configured on a Linux virtual machine (and if there are any other network optimization settings for Linux, which I can configure)

I have two Windows2012 server(serverA,serverB) and installed Hyper-V.

I tried Hyper-V replica replication from serverA to serverB.

One guest Windows2008R2 of serverA is replicated and still working fine.

But the other Windows2008R2 guest of serverA can not be replicated.

When I tried to replicate , I had failed to enable replication with 0x80004004 error like the below.

I tried solution 1 and 2 of the below link but same error still happen.

How could I solve it ?

Hyper-V Guest VM's disappeared after orderly reboot (Not Virus Scanning Issue)

$

I wanted to perform some long overdue maintenance on a hyper-v host.  My setup is two Win2008 R2 Core Hyper-V machines with local disk storage (no san, no virus protection on the hosts).  I powered down the Guest OS's,  exported them from  Virtual1 and copied the to Virtual2.   The guest OS came up and worked no problem on Virtual2.   Later on in the day I powered down Virtual2.  When virtual2 came back up 2 of the 3 guest VM's have disappeared from the management console.

Some items of note...

  • There is no virus protection running on the hosts (others seem to have been having an issue with virus scanning).
  • Event logs show the orderly shutdown of the guest VM's,  event logs then show only 1 of the machines turning back on.
  • I see no useful errors in the event logs related to starting the machines back up
  • There is a single event log entry for "Hyper-v failed creating a new partition (status 11)".  Although, there is plenty of free RAM & Disk space

Anyone have any idea what's going on?  I'm kind of baffled as where to even begin looking.

Thanks for any help,

-eric

Trouble Connecting 2 VM's

Hi, I hope someone can point me in the right direction. It has been a number of years since I had anything to do with networking and I am obviously way out of practice, also I have never used Server 2012 or Hyper-V so I am getting confused.

I have been asked if I can help set up a network for a very small company who can only stretch to one server, as such I am probably trying to ask a lot from one machine. As you can see from the diagram below, I am trying to implement a secure internal network (e.g. internal.local) and an external connection (e.g. external.com). On the external side I would like a website and DirectAccess, on the internal side I need a subnet (?) that can accommodate file and printer sharing. The maximum number of internal nodes will be 15 – 20; with some of them requiring wireless access.

My biggest problem is that I can’t connect the 2 VM’s to each other, no matter what I try they won’t ping. I have tried setting up the Host server and VM1 as routers (RRAS) and even tried PowerShell but I’m not having any luck.

Startup Generation 2 Virtual Machine takes longer than Generation 1 when running 4 or more guests

$

I've noticed that my generation 2 virtual machines take longer than my generation 1 virtual machines to startup.
The virtual machine will sit at 10% starting up for about 20 seconds, before the OS starts booting.

I have a generation 1 virtual machine on Linux which only takes 1-5 seconds to get past this part, but all my generation 2 machines on Linux and Windows Server 2012 R2 take much longer to startupwhen there are 4 or more machines running. The generation 1 virtual machine also takes a little longer to startup but the delay is not as bad as with the generation 2 VM's.

I have adequate resources on the system: 2X 240GB Intel SSD's in software raid, 32GB DDR3 1866MHz ram and an Intel Xeon E5-1620V2
The running virtual machines are all idling at 0-1% cpu usage. and the total CPU and Memory usage is below 50%

What I did notice is that VMWP.exe has a high cpu usage while its doing this, the cpu usage is 12%

Server 2012: Enabling Hyper-V Replica Site to Site Failure

$

We recently installed Server 2012 Data Center with Hyper-V on a two servers at two different sites: Main Site and DR Site.

Hyper-V is enabled and working great at both sites on these servers and now trying to configure Hyper-V replica gets us this result:

Some of the items we made sure to verify:

  • Enabled Firewall rules for inbound rules on Port 80. (Hyper-V Replica HTTP Listener) (Both Sites)
  • Modified ASA Firewall for HTTP port 80 and can run a packet trace from site to site.
  • Ping works fine in communication between servers
  • Both are in the same domain
  • Within the same Trust Group
  • Same default storage location and can view the folder from each location

So I am not sure what we are missing, but is there another port that needs to be open if we are going through HTTP because after starting to configuring the replica another message shows that "Could not get the configuration details of the specified server."

Searching around on TechNet didn't show any resolution for this, but if anyone would have some additional tips to try to troubleshoot that would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

SCVMM 2012 SP1 Virtual Switch on Cluster Node Disappears

$

I have been running into an interesting but an alarming issue with virtual switches. I have recently built a 4 node Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. I have built numerous 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V clusters before, so I am pretty familiar with the process. I have rebuilt my VMM due to software problems, and on this new cluster, I have configured the virtual switches with nic teaming on 2 of the virtual switches.

I have 4 clusters being managed by this VMM.. and this newly built cluster keeps losing all of the VMM virtual switch configurations, meaning if I go to properties on the problem host and click on virtual switches, its blank. Refresh host cluster flags all virtual machines in this cluster as "Unsupported Configuration," making the vm unmanageable via VMM.

Information (26844)
Virtual switch (Virtual Switch Name) is not highly available because the switch is not available in host (One of the Hyper-V Hosts).

Recommended Action

All virtual servers on that host still has connectivity, as all virtual switch configs are normal when looking at it with Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Manager..

The workaround is to evacuate the host using Failover Cluster Manager and reboot the host. Then refresh the host. Then refresh the VM's. I cannot consider this a 'workaround' as I cannot be rebooting my hyper-V hosts every week.. and migrating virtual servers constantly just for this reason. (DPM backups have a FIT with csv's if it tries to backup a vm on a same csv as another vm thats being migrated.)

I have been wrestling with this problem for a few weeks now. The cluster has been slicked and completely rebuilt.. Still same problems. Has ANYONE else out there seen this issue? Does ANYONE out there suggest a way to go about further troubleshooting this issue?
