Recommendations for Sizing Hyper-V

Hi there,

I've two servers http://www8.hp.com/emea_middle_east/en/products/proliant-servers/product-detail.html?oid=5195898 with 128GB Memory and 4 Gigabit Ethernet.

I want to run multiple AD instances, File Server, SQL, Exchange & Sharepoint on it. Data will be on a SAN. We've around 100 users. Other than Exchange, rest of the roles have minimal load. e.g., SQL is only for supporting management and monitoring systems. is it OK if I run each VM on RAID 0 disk? My theory is that if a disk fails, the service will resume from the other server. It's difficult to assess the current load of servers as there are many under different domains and stand alone systems as well. My plan is to consolidate them all. Running Hyper-V from USB is a recommended practice or is it supported only development systems? It would help me use one more disk for VM if I can run Hyper-V from USB in production. I understand that AD 2012 R2 is fully supported on VMs now. The old recommendation of having the primary DC on a physical server still valid? Our is a small setup.

I'm sure many of you have gone through these scenarios. Please share your experiences. Also if there are easy to follow books or articles on these subject, please point that out too.

Thanking you,

Shereef

Running MS Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 - Can i install 2VMS?

Hello everybody...

I am on the way of installing the Visual SVN server and JIRA on our company server and I have few questions to you guys. I have read an article about Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2 running Hyper-V on this webpage:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2013/09/03/understanding-licensing-for-windows-server-2012-r2-essentials-and-the-windows-server-essentials-experience-role.aspx

and I am a bit confused. From my understanding of the licensing of MS Server 2012 Essentials R2 I can run Hyper-V role with two VM instances of Windows Server 2012 Essentials at no cost but with only Hyper-V role enabled on a physical server? My question is if I will install Windows Server 2012 Standard on a separate license just fro JIRA and SVN can I run it on a VM without any problem with licensing of Windows Server 2012 Essentials R2? I know it sounds a bit complicated but I could not find the answer on my question anywhere....

Hyper-V VM snap shoot merge

Hello,

I'm facing a critical issue here, i have windows server 2012 host with hyper-v role and 6 vm's ruining on it, suddenly one of vm's (service manager) stopped working as normal because of the space of many snap shoots that fill up the storage space of host partition. the action we taken, that we delete all snap shoots to reduce the space of that VM. the VM machine after that merged the virtual hard desk to run again, the operating system up but many services being down such as remote desktop it's enabled but cannot connect remotely, also the portal in service manager being down, my log in account being temporary account .. in final, the operating system doesn't work as normal that effect my system center service manager too.

Thanks in advance and my apologize  about my lang :)

Trouble Connecting 2 VM's

Hi, I hope someone can point me in the right direction. It has been a number of years since I had anything to do with networking and I am obviously way out of practice, also I have never used Server 2012 or Hyper-V so I am getting confused.

I have been asked if I can help set up a network for a very small company who can only stretch to one server, as such I am probably trying to ask a lot from one machine. As you can see from the diagram below, I am trying to implement a secure internal network (e.g. internal.local) and an external connection (e.g. external.com). On the external side I would like a website and DirectAccess, on the internal side I need a subnet (?) that can accommodate file and printer sharing. The maximum number of internal nodes will be 15 – 20; with some of them requiring wireless access.

My biggest problem is that I can’t connect the 2 VM’s to each other, no matter what I try they won’t ping. I have tried setting up the Host server and VM1 as routers (RRAS) and even tried PowerShell but I’m not having any luck.

does Increasing Number of CPUs take space ?

Good Day,

I have a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V , that includes a Virtual machine its OS is also Win2008 R2.

I want to increase the number of CPUs on the VM from 1 to 4  , will this take additional space on the Host machine ? such as the RAM it creates a file on the Host machine its size is same as the RAM size.

Snapshot - General access denied error (0x80070005).

Hi,

When trying to snapshot a VM i get:

'vm1' could not create auto virtual hard disk C:\Virtual Guests\vm1\vm1_B4F0796F-3EB5-4810-BA04-CA8E1DA3774C.avhd: General access denied error (0x80070005). (Virtual machine ID AE6E811F-A056-4A1C-A501-287914A13021)

I looked around on the web, and found that the 'Virtual Machines' group isn't on my server, and therefor isnt on the security tab for my snapshot folder.

Taken from this post: http://joesitblogandotherstuff.blogspot.com/2010/01/could-not-initiate-snapshot-operation.html

How do I manually create the 'Virtual Machines' group, so I can make snapshots work again?

Intermittent network connectivity loss on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster VM's

I am experiencing an interesting problem with our Windows Server 2012 R2 three node cluster. On one of the nodes network connectivity tends to drop randomly for the virtual machines network interface. The associated network card on the affected node indicates a connected as well as all the virtual machines on the affected node. This only happens for the network attached to the production virtual network. Live migration and the CSV virtual networks never lose connectivity.

Rebooting the virtual machines does not resolve the problem. Only physically unplugging the affected network cable and plugging it back in resuming network connectivity.

All host are up to date via Cluster Aware Updating and the network card drivers are all current.

The frequency is totally random sometimes in between two days to two months between incidents.

Any thoughts on a cause?

2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster two node design with abundance 1Gbps NICs and FC storage

$

Hello All,

First post so please be gentle!

We are currently in the process of building/testing the upgrade of two node 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster.

  • Two hosts built with Datacentre 2012 R2 which will host approx. 30 VM's.
  • Shared storage will be fault tolerant FC- connection.
  • 10, (yes 10!) 1Gbps NICs are available, Intel i350.

trying to decide on teaming interfaces using native LBFO and the 2008 'style' of using un-converged networking, or teaming up most interfaces and using QoS.  Can find many/numerous examples of using 10Gbps NICs and converged, however 10Gbps networking isn't an option right now.

recommendations appreciated.

thanks

ODX on Dell MD 3XXX Storage will corrupt the VHDX

I have found that the latest version of the Dell MD Storage has ODX on by default. When using the storage migration with this turned on the VHDX files transfer instantly between the LUN's but the VHDX is corrupt and causes the Virtual Server to blue screen and then to never boot again.  I have yet to find a way to recover any data.

My current work around is to disable ODX on the array itself which means that the data is transferred by the hosts, but does not corrupt the VHDX files.

show storageArray odxsetting;

set storageArray odxEnabled=false;

IOPS capped on a VM within Hyper-V

$

quick question ... we get 100,000 IOPS once we used SQLIO against a VHDX file . ( let's say disk2.vhdx)

from inside a VM , we mount the same disk as a secondary disk and run SQLIO against it ; we get about 30,000 IOPS.

There is no QoS for storage defined yet ..

Is there any other limit ? we increased VM memory to 64 GB , processor to 8 and never went above 30,000

Unable to install Windows 8.1 on Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V

Hi.

We've recently gone from Server 2008 R2 (Data Center) to Windows 2012 R2 (Data Center) and we're now trying to install Windows 8.1 clients on our Hyper-V solution.

When using the virtual machine creation wizard I create two test machines.
One machine is a gen1 and one machine is gen2 both are set to install via network (MDT 2013) and both a given a 40GB disk and 4GB of ram. Both installations fail.

"Windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware".

According to everything I've found on the web this could happen if you try and install Windows 7 - something to do with 4K disks I think. This shouldn't happen on Windows 8.x.

I've seen a few posts where they explain the IDE controller being unable to handle 4K disks so that might explain something but in my case I also have a gen2 machine where disk is attached to a SCSI controller.

As I understand it a server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V should be able to have a Windows 8.1 installed on a VHDX file on a SCSI controller.

Can anyone help out here?

Thank you!

Hi,

I have the following code typed in a remote windows 8 machine and trying to create a VM on my HyperV server.

------------------------------------------------------------
$CLI1 = "Windows7"
$CRAM = 1GB
$CLI1VHD = 20GB
$VMLOC = "\\HypervSRV\c$\Vms\VM1"
$NetworkSwitch1 = "vswitch"
$W7ISO = "\\hypervsrv\c$\ISO\windows7.ISO"

Invoke-command -computername HypervSRV -scriptblock {New-VM -Name $CLI1 -Path $VMLOC -MemoryStartupBytes $CRAM -NewVHDPath $VMLOC\$CLI1.vhdx -NewVHDSizeBytes $CLI1VHD -SwitchName $NetworkSwitch1}

---------------------------------------------------------------

But this command does not work :(

Please help.

Designing Remote Site Failover (Hyper V Replication & Failover)

$

Hi All,

We are looking to run a pure Windows 2012 R2 environment for our main office (New York) and want to design as best an instantaneous failover solution to a remote site (Chicago) given we have various and numerous outage problems.

MAIN OFFICE (NEW YORK)

SonicWall NSA220 Router

Dell Server 1 (running Hyper V 2012 R2)

  1. DC Server VM (DC, DNS, DHCP, File Share, etc)
  2. DirectAccess Member Server VM

Dell Server 2 (running Hyper V 2012 R2)

  1. Exchange Member Server VM

Dell Server 3 (running Hyper V 2012 R2)

  1. Database Member Server VM1
  2. Database Member Server VM2

50 Workstations

REMOTE OFFICE (CHICAGO)

Sonicwall NSA220 Router (connect to MAIN OFFICE via VPN)

10 Workstations

Everything I've been readying about Hyper V 2012 R2's awesome Replication & Failover solution leads me to believe we can simply setup the same amount of servers to the Remote Site, connect the two sites via Sonicwall VPN, and then copy the VM's to them using Replication (first local copy, then replication over WAN VPN), and then...when a failure occurs, we simply spin up the VMs at the remote site for near instantaneous failover (along with changes to DNS, MX records, etc.)

Is what we are considering a solid, cost effective solution?  Or should we be setting this up some other way?

Virtual SAN Manager Configuration

I am trying to configure Virtual SAN Manager for the first time and whenever I attempt to start the virtual machine that I have the Fiber Channel Adapter connected to I get an error which I will display later.

The configuration is as follows: I have a host system running Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V, attached to that host is a HP MSA 2040 that is connected through a Single Path Fiber Channel connection with an 8GB/s PCI controller card.

Below is the error message I receive when I attempt to start the VM with the Fiber Channel Adapter added to the VM.

How to deploy an application packaged as a Hyper-V Export (.ZIP) file

$

I need to write a procedure for deploying an app to a Hyper-V host from a .ZIP file containing:

    • A .vhd file of the app running on its CentOS operating system
    • A configuration (.xml) file containing information about its virtual machine environment
    • The most recent version of Microsoft Linux Integration Services

The procedure is for someone who has a Hyper-V data center and needs to deploy virtual instances of the application. In preparation, they'll have downloaded the .ZIP file to their PC, which presumably has Hyper-V Management Console.

I don't have access to such an environment, and figured it would be a task I could find described somewhere on Technet. But much searching has failed to turn up anything that helps much. Can someone point me to the relevant information, please? Or provide a brief outline of the steps? TIA!

Looking for workaround Hyper V replication with Live Migration due to SAN limitations.

My current setup uses Server 2012 R2. I have 5 primary host servers and 3 secondary. I have Dell Equallogix 6110e SANs 34tb on both sides. I am limited to 15tb volumes on my SANs. I would like to replicate all of my VMs. Currently I am only able to replicate my most valuable VMs. I have a total of 24tb worth of VMs. It seems that the only ways i have thought of to do this would require losing the ability to live migrate. Is there any way to replicate from one cluster to 2 volumes on the secondary cluster without losing live migration?
