Hyper-V Server 2012 or Server 2012 R2 w/ Hyper-V?

$

Hello everyone, is there a recommended way of implementing this? I'm not too certain what the advantages or disadvantages are for using one over the other.

We are currently and ESX shop and are considering migrating to Hyper-V, before doing so however I would like to see what our options are and which is the best route to take.

Any thoughts on using Hyper-V Server 2012 over Server 2012 R2 w/ Hyper-V?

Thanks!

VM Guest Slow Disk

Hi all,

Forewarning:  I sort of got this stuff dumped in my lap so I am by no means close to an expert in virtualization.  I apologize in advance.

Scenario:

We are using Hyper-V VMs as our build machines (Windows 7 SP1 64-bit guest OS) for all of our products.  Right now I'm trying to shave time in the main solution compilation times for the one project and have been getting hardware increases on the Hyper-V host server.

The IT admin ran SQLIO on the host (Server 2012 - not R2) and saw numbers like:

IOs/sec: 28259.00
MBs/sec: 220.77

I ran SQLIO on the VM in question and saw numbers like:

IOs/sec 4070.33

MBs/sec: 7.94

Now the host hard disk setup is 2x 10k SAS drives.  I've tried plugging an SSD in and sticking one VM on there and re-running and saw no increase.

This is leading me to believe there's a wonky configuration somewhere.  I have the drive set to a fixed-disk vhdx on IDE controller.

Any ideas?

Rouge Checkpoints / Differencing disks

A couple of days ago some of our VMs started creating avhdx files when our backups ran (DPM 2012 r2)

We know that DPM uses checkppoints, but until now these checkpoints have behaved as expected, being removed and merged when the backup is complete. This also happens on the affected servers, with the exception that the avhdx files stay (and are used by the server). No check points are visible, and using Get-VMSnapshot shows no checkpoints/snapshots - so basically the backup process just creates new avhdx files every time we back up the servers...

The strange thing here is that ONLY disks attached a virtual SCSI controller seem to have the problem...

As an added bonus the VMs settings window claims the VM has Checkpoints, but nothing in the Hyperv manager (and the /Snapshots folder is empty)

Any idea how to fix this problem?

Server 2012 Datacenter Upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter

Good Day Everyone,

Ok so my dilemma is that I HAVE to upgrade one of our 2012 Datacenter Servers w/Hyper-V hosting to 2012 R2. The part that troubles me is that I have 3 Production VM's on this server, do I have to migrate these off the Host Controller before I conduct the upgrade? Can I shut them down and just conduct the upgrade? What is the risk? I have backups of all the VM's, however I do not have another server currently setup to handle the Live Migration as they are full, but I could make something work if I had to move them before the upgrade.

Hi friends

in new-vm cmdlet, there is -computer parameter but there is no -credential parameter to use when we are going to create a vm on that remote computer.  what bad ! has powershell team forgotten it ?

now what is the workaround ?

Designing Remote Site Failover (Hyper V Replication & Failover)

Hi All,

We are looking to run a pure Windows 2012 R2 environment for our main office (New York) and want to design as best an instantaneous failover solution to a remote site (Chicago) given we have various and numerous outage problems.

MAIN OFFICE (NEW YORK)

SonicWall NSA220 Router

Dell Server 1 (running Hyper V 2012 R2)

  1. DC Server VM (DC, DNS, DHCP, File Share, etc)
  2. DirectAccess Member Server VM

Dell Server 2 (running Hyper V 2012 R2)

  1. Exchange Member Server VM

Dell Server 3 (running Hyper V 2012 R2)

  1. Database Member Server VM1
  2. Database Member Server VM2

50 Workstations

REMOTE OFFICE (CHICAGO)

Sonicwall NSA220 Router (connect to MAIN OFFICE via VPN)

10 Workstations

Everything I've been readying about Hyper V 2012 R2's awesome Replication & Failover solution leads me to believe we can simply setup the same amount of servers to the Remote Site, connect the two sites via Sonicwall VPN, and then copy the VM's to them using Replication (first local copy, then replication over WAN VPN), and then...when a failure occurs, we simply spin up the VMs at the remote site for near instantaneous failover (along with changes to DNS, MX records, etc.)

Is what we are considering a solid, cost effective solution?  Or should we be setting this up some other way?

Hyper-V Replica Broker to multiple CSVs

With some help from the TechNet community and a whole lot of trial and error, I have successful configured my failover cluster and performed a couple of planned failovers. Hooray! However, I have 3 CSVs on my DR cluster and would like to utilize the entire disk space for replication. I have a replica broker on the primary side (not configured) and one on the DR side that points to the primary broker and points to 1 volume on the DR cluster for storage. I just found out that I cannot add additional volumes in the specified servers section by pointing to the same primary server. So do I  (A) make multiple brokers on the primary side with unique names and point them each to a CSV. (B) Delete my volumes and make one big one to facilitate all the replicas? Is there a third or even fourth option I haven't contemplated. Obviously, I would like to keep the setup as simple and efficient as possible. Thank you in advance for any help.

Need help with Hyper-V broker

I have seen many articles stating that a Hyper-V broker is necessary for failover replicas. Just little on how to do this. I have a 5 node cluster on the Primary side and a 3 node cluster on the DR side both with EqualLogic Sans.  I have created the role for the Hyper-V Broker on both sides. ProdBroker and DRBroker are their respective names and have added them to my servers in AD. They are both on the VM public subnet to use my teamed NICs. Configuring the broker is where I get lost. My questions is this: The "Specify the primary server" in the Add Authorization Entry of the primary side window should either be one of the primary host servers or the cluster, correct? The next section "Specify the default location to store replica files" should be set to the DR cluster, I believe. Or should it be the cluster share or the individual mounted volumes in the share. Also, what do I set the DRBroker to? I don't want to replicate that direction. All articles, forums and blogs have been very vague so specifics are appreciated. Any help? Thanks

Direct Attached Storage LUNs Performance Slow compared to VHDx

$

Hi,

We have a problem with performance on pass-thru disks on our VMs and Hyper-V hosts. When we directly provision LUNs from 3PAR via Fibre HBAs the performance is shocking (diskspd tests). However, when we use a VHDx file stored on the same LUN the performance is nearly 3 times faster.

Surely this doesnt sound right. We also tried provisioning a SSD volume from our 3PAR but the performance on this is the same compared to VHDx. How can VHDx be faster than SSD volume. Anyone got any ideas on this? What sort of performance do you see on your pass-thru disks compared to VHDx.

Really struggling to figure out what could cause should dramatic difference. Any help or suggestions highly appreciated.

The diskspd parameters i am using are: -o8 -t1 -c25G -d120.

Thank You

Two Dell R720 with 8 Nics each (4 x Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_165F & 4 x Intel(R) Ethernet Server Adapter I340-T2 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1516)

All drivers/firmware is upto date (BCMis 16.6.0.4, Intel is 12.6.47.1)

Teaming LACP/Hyper-V Port

3 Vlans set: Management, Live Migration, Cluster

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName “Live Migration” -Access -VlanId 201

Live migration jumps from 3% to 52%, then struggles one by one from 52% to 81% then it finishes almost instantly

Checked & re-checked everything, can not figure what is causing it

Help appreciated

I am accessing VMs via remote desktop.

Now three machines are OK. The last one I can connect only via Hyper-V manager.
But mouse pointer is only dot. I checked devices, there is no mouse device.
In the event. Log is message:

The driver \driver\mouclass failed to load.

I tried to install Integrated services bat there is latest version 6.3.9600.16389.

Hello All

We have a server 2008 R2 HyperV server and during the last few months it started to reboot randomly.

Initially we thought its related to the issue fixed by the following hotfix so we applied it but even with the hotfix it still keeps rebooting.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2732595

Unlike what's mentioned in the hotfix , the faulting module is not "ntdll.dll" but "msvcrt.dll".Also came up with the following indication the reboots could be related to KB2871997 but that update is not installed on this system.

Fabric Resource & Virtual Switch help

Hi,

Apologies if this is a silly question.  Basically we have a couple of Hypervisors HP Blade.  The first Blade has a virtual network teamed NICs which give the guests network access.

When I provision an additional blade, I have to create another virtual switch rather than use the switch previously created.  Am I correct in understanding that there needs to be one overall switch added in to each blade rather multiple VSwitches for each blade?  And if so how would I go about creating it?

Currently we have a VSwitch on blade 1. But looking Blade 2 nothing is available so I have to create a second.  If we ever fail the clients presumably the guests loose connectivity because it's set up incorrectly?  How do I go about creating it so that it's done with the bigger picture in mind?  Also how would I do this without affecting the current guests on blade 1?

Any advice would be appreciated and apologies if this question is somewhat convoluted!

Split volumes on a VHD?

Hi,

I have one 300Gb VHD file containing C: (O/S 100Gb) and D: (data 200Gb). How can I extract
each of those volumes so that they reside on individual VHD's?

So, i want to go from this:

1 x 300Gb VHD C: (O/S 100Gb) and D: (data 200Gb)

to

1 x 100Gb VHD C: (O/S)
1 x 200Gb VHD D: (data)

Is there a tool to do this or via powershell?

Thanks

Hello everybody,

i have a simple question but couldn't find an answer on my own:

I have a Hyper-V Cluster with several guests, all VHDs are stored in one folder on the Cluster Shared Volume (C:\ClusterStorage).

I installed a SQL-Server (Guest) and added additional 4 VHD-Files all equal in size. I named the VHDs like SQL-Data, SQL-Log, SQL-temp, SQL-Backup.

I could find the 4 Volumes in the guest OS. But unfortunately because they are all the same in size, i cannot identify them - i want to be sure that the SQL-Data Files are stored on the VHD called SQL-Data and not on the one called SQL-Log.

I could find the SCSI-Number in the Settings of the VM and i also find a LUN-Number on the guest at the properties of the disks in disk Manager.

Is this the correlation or how can i find that info?

Thank you,

Tom

Integration services cannot upgrade HAL

HI,

We migrated a SBS 2k3 to a virtual machine (host is windows 2k8 sp2 with Hyper-v) using disk2vhd.

We checked the update hal checkmark, but now we are running into a problem. The disk2vhd placed a virtual server hal in the VHD. As soon as we try to insert the integration services disk it keeps saying it has to update the hal and needs a reboot.

We say ok, it says it is updateing the Hal, it reboots and then comes again with the same message that it needs to update the hal. So we are in a loop.

Anyone familiar with this problem?

I was able to recreate the problem with a windows xp machine too.

Best regards,

Henry

Windows 2012 CSV backup

In Windows 2012, a provider "Microsoft CSV Shadow Copy provider" is introduced and the backup requestor must use this provider for a CSV volume in order to take application VSS snapshot to a Hyper-V VM.

My question is, in an environment where a hardware provider is available, how can we take application hardware snapshot? My confusion is, in order to take hardware snapshot, we need to use hardware provider for the CSV volume, however, in order to take application consistent snapshot, we need to use Microsoft CSV Shadow Copy provider. How can I use both for one same CSV volume?

Thanks

Installing Debian on Hyper-V

Hi

I am running a PC with Windows 8.1 and have Hyper-V activated. I am trying to set up a virtual machine running Debian.

I have downloaded the the debian "net install" ISO and configured Hyper-V to boot from that image. When starting up the virtual computer I expected it would start from the CD (i.e ISO). Instead I gets a message, "unable to find boot device" (or simular).

After a googling for I while I found the problem, but not a solution.

Normally ,when you boot from a CD, you have 3-5 seconds delay while you are supposet to press a key to start the CD boot process,, but in this case,,, you don't get any delay, so you cant press the a key.

How do I fix this with the Debian "net install" ISO.

Hyper-V Integration Services Stopped

Hi,

I have looked thru the forums and seem to be hitting a dead end or my search skills are failing. Anyhow, I have 2 Windows 2012 R2 DataCentre hosts running. They are running Hyper-v exclusively. I just noticed the other day that all the services for Hyper-V are stopped except for Virtual Machine Management. If I click on any of the stopped services, it will start up then promptly stop. It will give an error of:The Hyper-V x service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs. I have reviewed my Windows Event logs and there are no warning or errors.

Some other background, there is SCCM 2012 R2 (5.0.7958.1401) in the environment, but no SCCM agent is installed at the moment. There is also VMM 2012 (3.2.7672.0) and the agent for this is installed on both hosts. Both of the hosts have been re-imaged in the last 2 months, so I don't think it's some weird age related weirdness. I also removed the hyper-v role from one of the hosts, rebooted and then re-added it. This made no difference. I also tried to add about of services to the restrictedservices in the registry as I had come across this in the wild of the internet, but this made no difference.

Any thoughts, idea's?

Hello;

I have a windows server 2008 R2 with 2 HPV servers, I have installed a new windows 2012 R2 std server, and would like to move the HPV from 2008 to the new 2012.

I have exported the HPV servers, but when I try to import, I get the error " Hyper-V did not find virtual machines to import from the location"

I am looking for a way to do this, there is a lot on the web, but non that have worked for me?
