Cluster HyperV Virtual Machine Summary TurnedOff perfmon counter meaning

$

Hi,

On my standalone  (non-clusterized) HyperV Host , HyperV Virtual Machine Summary TurnedOff perfmon counter reflects the number of "Off Virtual Machines"; Great !!!

But, on my two nodes cluster, HyperV Virtual Machine Summary TurnedOff perfmon counter seems to be uncorrect  (is equal to number of VM independently of their status ON or Off).

Does anybody already check this behavior ?

Thanks.

How Best To Configure Physical Drives for Hyper-V

$

I am setting up a new server and am looking for some insight.  I have qty4 1tb SAS drives so I have an option of a Raid5 (3tb net) or Raid10 (2tb net).  I will be running only 2 VMs on this machine (SBS2011 so I will have Exchange running and Server 2008R2 running RDS only) and am planning on running Server 2012 GUI as my Host for the Hyper-V.  With my Dell H700 controller I also have the ability to create multiple VDs so this is what I was thinking.

Dell H700 Controller

-Raid10

-1VD - 100GB (That will be my C: drive where I install the Server 2012 GUI and HyperV

-1VD - 1900GB (That will be my D: drive for the Host)

-On that D: drive I will create my 2 VMs for SBS2011 and Server 2008R2 running RDS

Thoughts?

Thanks!

SR-IOV on Intel S1200 BTLR Xeon E3-1220Lv2

I have installed Windows 2012 Hyper-V Server. The guest VM consists of a couple W2012 Servers simulating a Domain. The hardware is a Intel Intel S1200BTLR board (BIOS is up to date), a Xeon E3 1220Lv2 and a Intel I350 dualport NIC. The I350 support SR-IOV as well as the current driver (V. 17.4) does. The virtual switch is configured to support SR-IOV as well as the NIC in the VMs. However Network Status always shows:

Degraded (SR-IOV not operational)

VMQs are working. The command "(Get-VMHost).IovSupportReasons gives:

SR-IOV cannot be sued on this system as the PCI Express hardware does not support Access Control Services (ACS) at any root port. Contact your vendor for further information.

I really would like to get SR-IOV up and running. Does anybody know if the reason given is the "true" reason? Do I have to configure something (VT-x and VT-d is enabled)?

I also would like to know if someone has gotten SR-IOV successfull running on stock hardware (like different Intel Server Board, for example one for the E5 processors with integrated i350 NIC).

I tried Intels Website to find some more informations regarding "this product is supported" or "this product will be support with the next driver version. But all it gives is some general information about SR-IOV and whitepapers.

AzMan replacement for Hyper-V on Windows 2012 Server

The following articles on technet say, that AzMan is deprecated in Windows Server 2012

First article. What's new in Hyper-V. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831410.aspx

Second article. Things that are removed or deprecated in Windows Server 2012. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831568.aspx

Both articles refer to some mythycal new management tools. The question is: where do I get these tools and how should I manage access to the virtual machines now? Will appreciate any information about this topic.

Hyper-V 2008 Running on Server 2008 R2

I have assigned two cpus to a virtual machine, but it only reports 1 when I right-click Computer and select "Properties".  In cpu-z it shows one CPU and 2 cores. Is this by design?

Hyper-V and Processor power states on Windows server 2012 (Intel Speedstep)

$

Hi,

I have recently added the Hyper-V role to my server running Windows Server 2012 and found that under power options I can no longer control the minimum and maximum processor states. The processor constantly runs at its maximum frequency

If I remove the Hyper-V role then the processor state options return.

Is this by design or a bug?

Is there a way to force the return of the processor state options? (it's the same across all 3 power plans)

Thanks!

Ubuntu 12.10 GPT partition >2TB not working

Hi!

Hyper-V on 2012.

I've got a Ubuntu, 12.10, server installation which i try to add some storage to. I've created 64GB harddrive (VHDX) as the 1st drive. And then a 2nd drive 4TB (VHDX). Thin.prov on both.

Creating and formating: Using gdisk, parted or gparted (livecd) on ubuntu I'm not able to partition, GPT, and initiate a filesystem on the the large VHDX.

Is there a problem with Hyper-V 2012 and drives (VHDX) >2TB when used by guests?

Edit: :) Typo in title... Ubunut...

Best practice regarding migration

Hi!

I`m setting up a lab, and want to try different scenarios regarding migration to Hyper-V 2012, regarding this I have some questions.

Is it possible to migrate vm from Hyper-V 2008 R2 -> Hyper-V 2012 with no downtime, like live migration ?

Is it possible to migrate vm from vmware -> Hyper-V 2012 with no downtime, like live migration ?

Which tools can we use regarding migration from Hyper-V 2008 R2 -> Hyper-V 2012 ?

Which tools can we use regarding migration from vmware -> Hyper-V 2012

Is there any good 3 party Applications that you would recommend when it comes to migration ? I noticed that you should delete all the snapshots before you migrate a vm to 2012, but when we did a export on vm from Hyper-V 2008 R2 that had snapshots that was taken when the vm was running, it also appered on the Hyper-V 2012 with no error, so I Guess its ok ?

Best pratice and good howto links are welcome :)

Thanks for Reply

Hyper-V 2012 Cluster, CSV and WSB VMs Backup

Hi All,

Suppose Ihavethe following scenario:

Server 1: Windows Server 2012  STD (DC), Server 2: Hyper-V Server 2012 (core) , Server 3: Hyper-V Server 2012 (core), Server 4: ISCSI Storage.

The servers above are configured in a two node CSV Cluster.

I heard that WSB 2012 is able to backup VMs within a Cluster. It can workin this scenario?

Where can I findanydocumentation on this?

Very slow network performance with Intel NIC when TCP Large Send Offload is enabled

I have a Windows 2008 server with two NIC's (Intel PRO/1000 PL and Intel PRO/1000 PM), and one virtual external switch connected to each NIC.

With the 01/14/08 network driver, I get very low throughput on both NIC's (~10KB/sec when downloading from my server when it should be around 11MB/sec).

I've found that disabling "TCP Large Send Offload (IPv4)" on the virtual switch and "Large Send Offload v2 (IPv4)" on the physical adapters solves the problem.

Is this a bug in the driver?

Thank you,

Hyper-V - VM Guest NIC Dropping on VSS Snapshot

$

Hello there.  We've just started using Commvault for our backups.  One particular Hyper-V VM Guest Server seems to drop its NIC connection every time that the Commvault backup initiates a VSS Snapshot of the machine.  The event log shows:

Event ID 10: The miniport 'Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter' disconnected. (This happens at the exact same time as Event ID 4:  Virtual Disk Service, Service Stopped)

Then 3 or 4 minutes later it reconnects:

Event ID 9:  The miniport 'Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter' connected.

Environment:

VM Hosts:

Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core Enterprise SP1 -  Cluster with 2 Nodes.  SCVMM Also running SP1, and VM guests are running on the latest Integration Components.

VM Guest:  Windows Server 2003 Standard with SP2

We're backing up several VM Guest servers with the same OS, in the same way - yet this is the only one that seems to have this issue.

Please help.

How much static memory to set for Hyper-V for disaster recovery testing on 16 GB Windows 2008 R2 std. server running SQL Server 2012?

$

I am loking to setup the Hyper-V role on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard with SQL Server 2012 previously installed. We do not have budget for two separate servers. SQL Server is the main priority on the server. Only one virtual machine will be installed and used periodically to test disaster recovery restores (using Ultrabac) from image backups of servers.  We want to minimize the use of memory for Hyper-V so we plan to remove the virtual machine when done testing the restore (if necessary). The other servers we plan to restore are of similar build or the servers to restore are less powerful using less memory.

We have plenty of space on our RAID drives for now and was not planning to make a partition for Hyper-V. I was thinking of using Static Memory and limit the Virtual Machine to 4 GB of RAM and set 12 GB for the server/SQL Server. The server to host Hyper-V is a Dell PowerEdge 2900 with 16 GB RAM, Intel Xeon, E5345 @3.33 GHZ (2 processers).

a. Will Hyper-V use memory / CPU if Hyper-V role installed but not used (No Virtual machines installed or vm installed but not being used/tested) ?
b. Will Hyper-V need more than 4 GB of memory (how much needed?) if we do have a Virtual machine installed and we are testing the restore (very basic testing).

Lastly, do we need to 'turn off' Hyper-V when we do not need it to save memory and CPU resources? Or is this handled automatically when not used?  For example: If we set static memory to 4 GB for Hyper-V and Hyper-V is not being used are we always limited to 12 GB of RAM for SQL Server?

Physical to Virtual - IP Address Conflict

$

Hi, I have a physical 2003 R2 server that I am attempting to virtualise onto a 2008 R2 Hyper-V host. The host has its own dedicated NIC (172.16.0.17), a 2nd NIC dedicated to another 2003 guest VM (running fine with 172.16.0.9 on an virtual switch connected to an "External" network) and a 3rd NIC dedicated to the new guest VM (which will be 172.16.0.8 on another virtual switch connected to an "External" network).

I have used ShadowProtect to back up the physical server (VSS snapshot process) then restore into the new guest VM. I have succesfully used this process several times before. When you bring up the guest for the first time (after switching off the old physical server) you do it in Safe Mode with Networking so you can unhide then uninstall the old physical NIC and therefore release the IP address (172.16.0.8). You can then reboot and set the IP address of the guest's new LAN connection (with the VM Bus Network Adaptor) to the old physical server's address.

As soon as I do this I get an IP address conflict. The Event Log gives the MAC address of the old physical server's NIC but it has been switched off by this point! I am positive there is no other device on the network with this address. If I change the guest VM's address to something else the message goes away. A ping of 172.16.0.8 produces no reply (no reply on other servers as well). There is no entry in the ARP table for 172.16.0.8. If I show hidden devices in Device Manager the old physical NIC is not there. Devcon only shows the VM Bus Network Adaptor and there are no additonal adaptors in the usual registry locations.

Curiously if I change the virtual switch to "Private Virtual Machine Network" mode then set the VM guest's IP to 172.16.0.8 there is no conflict message. This implies that the address is in use somewhere on the network but I am sure it isn't.

Any ideas? Thanks,

Guy Ellingham

VM's cannot connect to virtual machine configuration storage after a host is removed from cluster - help please

We had a 2 host cluster with 2 vm's on host A and 1 vm on host B.

I exported the vm from host B and imported it into host A.  I then removed host B.  Now have 2 the 2 original vm's that were in host A.  Both say they connect connect to virtual machine configuration storage and the vm i imported no longer appears.

Any help would be very much appreciated.
