Could not initialize - error 3040

Hi,

I'm having a weird problem. I have been successfully running a number of VMs under Server 2008 R2 SP1 for a while now. I upgraded to Server 2012 (in-place) and now I get the 'name' could not initialize error.

I have:

  • Gone into the BIOS to verify IntelVT and No Execute were both enabled still
  • Created a new VM and tried to start it
  • Disabled IntelVT into the BIOS - this yields a 'hypervisor not running' error when attempting to start
  • Re-enabled IntelVT
  • Uninstalled the HyperV role
  • Reinstalled the HyperV role

What I have noticed is that when I run CoreInfo, Intels processor utility or the tool from GRC, they all say my processor does not support hardware assisted virtualization.

I know it does, I've been using it for ages under Server 2008 R2 SP1. The processor is an Intel E8200 core2duo and when I check Intels site, I see what I expect:

http://ark.intel.com/products/33909/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-E8200-(6M-Cache-2_66-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB)

So, why, under Server 2012 do the tools detect my processor as not supporting it?

I'm at a loss, truly, I have no idea what to do (short of blowing away the box and running Server 2008 R2 SP1 again).

Anyone any ideas?

(And yes, hypervisorlaunchtype is set to auto)

Very Urgent: Cant get D disk in VM after moving Hard Disk files of VM to another HyperV machine

Hello

This is critical problem

Need urgent Help

I have a HP server installed Windows 2008 server standard edition with hyperv enabled and had a VM runing with 2 disk (C and D)

I have VM  vhd files placed in F disk in host server

I decided to go to Windows 2008 Hyper-V server and therefore formated  C disk where i had   Windows 2008 server standard edition.

Now i remotely created new Vm and attached  vhd disk which i have in F disk.  VM loaded but now i see only C disk.  No D disk as before. Disk management show  unallocated  space. I dont want to create new disk from unallocated space. I have critical info.

Unfortunalty i lost VM config files which was in C disk

What should i do in order to restore D disk as before.

Please help

Real World Network has trouble after HyperV setup

I am running Windows 8, and have installed Hyper-V.  In Hyper-V I have connected the Virtual to an external network.   When I do a clean start my real world can go online, and the Virtual World can go online.  Every so often the real world fails to get a real IP address, but the Virtual World can go online.

What could be causing this and how can I correct this?

Hyper-V Replication - Failed to Enable

I have successfully gotten three VMs to enable replication; but on my next VM I keep getting the same error message when I try to enable replication.

"Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'IPAM': The operation timed out (0x00002EE2)."

Nothing has changed since I enabled replication for the other VMs, and I am at a loss as to why this VM is having issues.

The only odd thing I have noticed is on the DR node, Hyper-V creates the VM and creates the cluster resource role for the VM but never adds the VM to the resource role.

I have gone through the "Understanding and Troubleshooting guide for Hyper-V Replica" but that has not helped identify the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Routing between virtual networks

Folks,

Good Day,

I am having something get me confused.

Lets have a scenario:

Assume that I have the following customers:

Customer A: with two subnets 192.168.10.x/24 & 192.168.20.x/24

Customer B with single subnet 192.168.20.x/24

both customers are moving their subnet(s) to my cloud

Now using network virtualization I am able to host these 3 subnets,

My question is how to enable routing between the subnets that are related to customerA.

How to insert custom metadata into VHDX?

Hi all,

I've been reading up about VHDX's, and one of the new features is how custom metadata can be kept (inside?) the VHDX file.  Such as OS version, patch levels, applications installed etc.

My question is...  what tool/powershell/method do you use to insert that data?  I can't find a blog post or how to anywhere.

The most commonly used OS as VM - Is it a good idea?

The most commonly used OS as VM. Is it a good idea for locally accessed workstation? What are the user experiences?

Hello,
please is there someone who has already dealt with a similar question / problem?

For my work I always need at least two Windows OSs and one Linux. A few years ago a switched from using three computers to only one where I have virtualized systems. My primary OS was always most recent Windows and used VMware Workstation to run other systems.

I am planning new installations because there is a Windows 8 / Server 2012 and I am thinking about installation of the OS that I am using most as a virtual machine. My idea is to install Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V as the launcher of the VM with OS that I will use in 99% of the time. I will probably install on the VM also Windows Server 2012 because I prefer Windows Servers and my company will buy a license for me.

Advantages are clear:

  • The most frequently used OS can be easily moved from one hardware to another.
  • Restarts of the most frequently used OS will not kill other virtual machines.
  • Quick booting of the most frequently used OS  (I have hardware RAID card that delay booting sometimes to several minutes).

Disadvantages / problems:

  • I am not sure if I will have same user experience on the VM that will be accessed using Remote Desktop. Of course I will use new RemoteFX and I will locally access the computer so the Remote Desktop connection will be slowed by slow network but will it be the same like OS installed without virtualization?
  • I know from my experience that server that is accessed using Remote Desktop from another client that is on the physical 1 Gb network do not have desktop with same speed like when the same server is accessed locally by using keyboard and monitor that is connected directly to them.
  • In my case the network between client (Server 2012 with Hyper-V) and VM will be virtualized but is the virtualized network adapter limited for example to defined 1 Gb or is the speed unlimited?
  • I do not play games but I play videos (movies) so I am asking will it be possible in the VM without degradation of the quality?
  • Also will it be possible to use all my three monitors for that one VM?

Minor problems

  • I am not sure if I will be able to “do stuff” with hardware (for example burning optical disks) in the VM.

So what do you think? Is it good idea to have virtualized OS that I use 99 % of the time? Or should I rather choose the classic approach and install this OS to the hardware and run virtualized systems from them?

P.S. My hardware never was a problem for any installation. I do not have server kind of the computer but I have overclocked i7 and 16GB RAM and this is enough.

Thank you very much.
Have a nice day.

Learning about virtualisation - newbie!

My setup. PC running Oracle's Virtualbox which has Microsoft Server 2008 Installed. Hyper-V Manager is installed on my PC, which runs Windows 7 Ultimate.

Followed the following:

The Virtual Machine Connection tool is installed by default with the installation of the Hyper-V role on a full installation of Windows Server 2008 (the connection tool is not installed on core installations).

To install Hyper-V Manager on a Windows Server 2008 system which does not have the Hyper-V server role installed (in other words a system which is to act as a remote client), perform the following steps:

1. Start Server Manager

2. Select Features from the left hand panel

3. Click on the Add Features link in the main panel to invoke the Add Features Wizard

4. Locate the Remote Administration Tools category in the list of features and click on the + to unfold the sub-categories.

5. Click on the + next to Role Administration Tools to unfold the list of features in that category.

6. Select Hyper-V Tools.

7. Click on Install to install the feature.

=============================

Hyper-v tools is shown as installed.

Hyper-v manager gives the following connection error:

An error occurred while attempting to connect to <server name>. Check that the virtual machine management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server.

Where am I going wrong?

Setup Virtual Network - Can't Ping Between Host and VM

$

Hi,

I'm new to Hyper-V, and networking, etc, but, I do have a question:

I set up Windows 8 on my home PC.  I created a VM using Hyper-V with Windows 8 as well.  Note that I do not have a domain, etc on my home network.  I'm not sure if that is part of the issue here....  The bottom line is that I want connectivity between the host PC and the VM, but, I can't seem to get that working.

My host PC's IP is 192.168.1.5, and the VM IP is 192.168.137.10.

When I set up the Virtual Network, I set it to Internal.  I'm under the assumption that these two networks can't communicate because they are on different networks (192.168.1.x vs 192.168.137.x).....

Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

How can I get sound in Hyper V?

Hey guys,

I just recently built a computer and put windows server 2012 on it.  I want to still have access to windows 7 for other reasons, so I did so with hyper v.  Everything worked out fine but no sound.  It would be alright, but I am wanting to take some adobe connect classes over it instead of my laptop.  Can you guys let me know how to do this or point me in the direction on how to accomplish this.

One --> Many Replication

I've just started looking at Hyperv2012 this morning and I'm impressed with what I see, and got live migration and replication working between two servers with DAS without any problems.

My question is this. Is it possible to have replication from one source server to multiple destination servers. The reason you may want to do this is to maintain both local and remote DR recovery systems?

I'm pretty sure the answer to this question is no, so if anyone from MS is listening could it go on the wish list.

Moving from 2008 R2 to 2012 Hyper-V

Hi,

We have 7 Hyper-V 2008 R2 hosts running ~80 VMs.

Now, we have installed a Hyper-V 2012 and we want to migrate som VMs to 2012.

It seems, the only way to move a VM from 2008 R2 to 2012 is to shut it down and export/import it? That requires a LOT of downtime - is there no other way?

Thanks in advance!

Hyper-V Networking Advice

Hello,

Looking for advice here.  I have a server that has 3 physical nics.  I want to use one for management, and the other 2 for hosting 4 vms.  The VMs all have to talk to the internet and the rest of the physical network.  By my understanding I would have to have 5 physical nics to make this work, am I correct in this?  If not, then I have to create two external networks and 4 internal networks, but how would I get the internals to communicate with the externals?  Reading through the best practices and Understanding Networking with Hyper-V has just boggled my mind even more.  Maybe I am missing something though that will key it in for my mind.

Hyper-V remote management console

Host server: Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V installed (already joined the domain)
DCs: Windows Server 2008 R2 (VMs of the Hyper-V host server)
Remote management computer: Windows 7 32bit with RSAT installed (already joined the domain)
Remote management user: A memeber of Domain Admins and logged on the remote management computer

I added my Hyper-V host server in the Hyper-V Manager console in RSAT on my remote management computer. I could manage the Hyper-V host server such asHyper-V Settings and Virtual Network Manager. But I could not see or manage the VMs. The system told meNo virtual machines were found on this server. I believe there are several VMs on my Hyper-V host server. And the Windows Firewall on both Hyper-V host server and remote management computer was diabled.

Help understanding CPU usage/resource

Hi, i cant find any god information on how to config cpu usage or why this happens. I have a hyper-v server with 2 cpus and 8 core total. One of my VMs a Windows 7 pro 64-bit is running a java application and can only use one CPU for that. But i cant get that VM to use more than 1% of CPU usage on the hyper-v server. I have tried all different settings but nothing helps. Since its not possible to go higher than 100% on Virtual Machine Limit then it should be possible to let one VM use 10-12% ( 100% / 8 core = 12,5% for each core? ) of the total CPU usage on the server, or? The relative weight dont change anything, i have tried 100, 1000 and 10000 buts its all the same.

I successfully setup hyper V server on a test machine and install some guest OS on it. All of it work well with out any problem. But suddenly I lost connectivity to outside world from guest OS. Now I can ping to host OS (Hyper V Server), host to all guest and ping between guests. But none of them have access to outside world.

I was using external virtual network and connect it to physical NIC. All of the guest OSes are using this external Virtual network.

I search a lot on web. But there is no useful info. Please help me to clear the problem.

Upgrade Hyper-V host from 2008R2 Std to Ent

Hi,

I'm temporarily working at this client site and found a Server with Windows 2008 R2 Standard Edition which is also running 5 VM's (1 SQL 2008 server). There are also 2 other Hyper-V hosting servers, running  W2008 R2 Enterprise. I want to upgrade the hosting server with W2008 Standard Ed to W2008 Enterprise Ed.

What's the best way to accomplish this? And is it possible to do an upgarde with VM's till staying on the host?

Thanks in advance

Jelle
