P2V Conversion wont boot

$

Hi all,

I have recently started playing around with Virtual Servers and have done a P2V conversion which comprises 3 partitions.

One system reserved, one drive C and one drive D.

The conversion works fine, but when i build the virtual machine it wont boot. I have the system reserved partition as the first drive and the C; boot drive as the second, both on the IDE channel. I have it running 2 processors and 24GB of RAM. the physical hardware is plenty enough to take a dozen virtual servers.

Can anyone see where i am going wrong? Is there a specific way to configure a virtual server when using a system reserved partition. Everything i have read say it is fine to do but i am still struggling.

The virtual machine is Server 2012.

Thanks in advance.

Excuse me for my bad English...

I have a server with one network card and two ip address. I want to configure:

First ip address for host PC and second ip address for virtual machine. Host PC and the virtual machine may not communicate with each other.

how to proceed? I am a beginner in hyper-v .... Excuse me if I ask badly.

How many Virtual Switch I have to create?

Virtual Switch External, Internal or Private ?

How to set the default network adapter with two static IP ? (getaway is equal)

I tried few tutorials, but virtual machine network adapter not have internet access.

Please advise, specific procedures in easy steps ....

Thank you very much

USB Pass-Through From Windows 8.1 Host To Windows Server 2012 R2 VM

I want to be able to connect with a Windows Mobile Device through Windows Mobile Device Center, within a Virtual Machine.  When connecting through the Hyper-V Manager and through Remote Desktop, under "Other supported RemoteFX USB devices", I can see the Symbol USB Sync Cradle.  In the VM, in Device Manager, I don't see a USB connection.  In the VM, I don't see any meaningful errors in the Event Viewer.

Host:  Windows 8.1 Enterprise Hyper-V on a Domain.  Upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro.  When this computer was originally installed with Windows 8 Pro, Hyper-V was enabled.  I removed Hyper-V, and installed VMWare Player, because I wanted USB Pass-through.  I then uninstalled VMWare and installed VirtualBox.  Recently, I uninstalled VirtualBox, upgraded to Windows 8.1 Enterprise, and enabled Hyper-V.

Virtual Machine OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 on a Workgroup.  Started out with being a VMWare VM, using VMWare Player.  Moved to VirtualBox.  USB Pass-through was working in both those virtual environments.  Used Disk2VHD to convert the VM to a VHDX file.

On the Host:

  1. Windows Mobile Device Center is connected to a Motorola Windows Mobile Device (MC959X) sitting in a Symbol USB Cradle.  The OS on the scanner is Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 Classic CE OS 5.2.29217 (Build 29217.5.3.12.26).  Advanced Networking (USB to PC) is not enabled.
  2. Enabled RemoteFX.
  3. In the RDP file, and in the Registry, added the GUID's for:
  • WPD "{eec5ad98-8080-425f-922a-dabf3de3f69a}";
  • Windows Mobile "{6AC27878-A6FA-4155-BA85-F98F491D4F33}";
  • USB Device "{88BAE032-5A81-49f0-BC3D-A4FF138216D6}";
  • Windows CE USB Device "{25dbce51-6c8f-4a72-8a6d-b54c2b4fc835}";
  • GUID_DEVINTERFACE_USB_DEVICE "{A5DCBF10-6530-11D2-901F-00C04FB951ED}"

Ran "sfc /scannow"

All Microsoft Updates are current.

What am I missing?

VM falls back to startup memory after some time when Dynamic Memory is enabled event id 19548

Hello All,

We have multiple Server 2008R2 VM's on different Server 2012R2 hosts that have the following problem.

VM Dynamic Memory enabled
Startup 2048Mb
Minimal 1024Mb
Maximum 10240Mb

VM starts up and allocates memory, Memory demand is ok and Memory status also. Sometimes after a reboot the Assigned memory is 2048Mb, the Memory demand and Memory status columns are empty (hyper-v manager), dynamic memory is still enabled according to the column and inside the VM the maximum memory is 2048Mb. On the host I get the following event:

Event id 19548

The dynamic memory balancer could not add memory to the virtual machine 'vm01' because its configured maximum has been reached (Virtual machine ID 5AC8B7DE-0848-49E2-AD0B-7D2C1A56803D).

There is plenty of RAM available on the host to cover twice the maximum configured RAM. All the VM's and Hosts have the latest updates, all the integration services are running inside the VM and there is no message in the event log inside the VM. I can't figure out why this event id is generated because there is more than enough RAM. I looked in several event logs on the Host and inside the VM but the only thing I can find is the one above (that's related to this problem I guess). Any help? for now the workaround is to reboot the server and watch what it does.

Regards,
Peter

Hyper-V Replica Capacity Planner stuck getting VM information

$

I'm trying to use the Capacity Planner for Hyper-V replica tool to estimate requirements for a replica site.

It keeps getting stuck "Getting the VM and VHD from primary site, this can take upto several minutes...". I've waited over an hour, and it still sits there.

The primary site is a 3 node Hyper-V 2012R2 cluster. I have installed and configured the Hyper-V Replication Broker role on the cluster. For now, it's set to use HTTP without any certificates.

I don't have a replica site yet, so I've selected "Skip tests involving Replica site". For the primary site, I've tried pointing it at both the replication broker, and at one of the individual nodes. It gets stuck in the same place.

Other things I've tried:

  • Disabled windows firewall on all 3 nodes
  • Running the tool from one of the nodes, logged in as a domain admin account
  • Moving all the VMs off of one node, and pointing the tool at that now empty node
  • Let it run for longer - left it alone overnight.
  • Downloaded the tool again in case it was corrupt
  • Rebooted my computer

In all cases, it gets stuck at the exact same spot.

Any idea how to figure out why it is freezing? Have I missed configuring something important for the tool to run?

[Forum FAQ] Receive Side Scaling and Virtual Machine Queues Quick Start

Quick Review

  • RSS is Receive Side Scaling and is a commonly used technology to disperse network traffic among multiple CPU cores on a physical host to load balance processing.  Reliant on vendor implementation. RSS was first implemented with the scalable networking pack in 2003 SP2 and is still widely used today.
  • VMQ is Virtual Machine Queuing and is a commonly used technology to evenly disperse network traffic among multiple CPU cores on virtual machines on a Hyper-V host. Reliant on vendor implementation.
  • VRSS is VIRTUAL Receive Side Scaling and can be used to augment VMQ on VMs to increase throughput. VRSS is introduced in 2012 R2 and you must use 2012 R2 level OS for both the HOST and the VM.
  • VMQ Queues are maximum numbers of lanes (processor allocations) at a hardware level.
  • RSS Queues are maximum numbers of lanes (processor allocations) at a hardware level.
  • SR-IOV is another technology that can be paired with VMQ.

Virtual Machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running

Hi

I have installed Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition with a GUI. Default configuration, nothing special.

Whenever I want to turn on any machine inside of Hyper-V, the following error message appears:

"Virtual Machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running"

Whenever this happens, I run the following command:

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype Auto

and reboot the Server. After a reboot, all Virtual Machines can be started without Problems. However, as soon as I shut down the Server instead of rebooting it, the Problem happens again and I need to enter the command again and reboot.

Now my question is how to solve this Problem. I never had this Issue with Windows Server 2008 R2, maybe there are some differences regarding the Hypervisor in Server 2012. How can I make sure the Hypervisor is always on, even after a Shutdown? Thanks in Advance

DPM online backup causes Hyper-V Manager uptime resets

$

We are experiencing resets of the uptime counter in the Hyper-V Manager when backups are taken by the DPM (r2)

The VMs that suffer from the issue are all on a new R2 cluster that uses another SOFS cluster via SMB for all VM disks.
All requirements for online backup should be in place, and all servers run fine while being backed up. When backing up the servers do create a new checkpoint, but as i understand this is the correct behavior when using DPM R2 on a Server 2012 R2 cluster.

Before installing the SMB share VSS role, and upgrading Integration services on some VMs, only Offline backup was an option, but after correcting these issues DPM allows online backup - but uptimes are still being reset.

No servers are entering saved state or otherwise being reset while backed up. Event logs show no errors regarding to "hot" backup, and the guest OS' show correct uptime when checked .

Is the resetting uptime a sign that i still have issues with online backup, even if everything seems correct? And if not, how do i avoid the uptime being reset. I know that its not technically even the correct uptime, and even resets from migrations, but still..

How to get notified when changes happen on Hyper-V host or VMs

Is there a way to get notified on Hyper-V host or VM changes? Our intention is to notify the system-administrators on any changes.

1. How to get notified when new VM is created (or deleted) on Hyper-V.
2. How to get notified when any memory/CPU/disk is added (or deleted) on any VM(s).

In general:
- Get notified when any changes happens to Hyper-V host.
- Get notified when any changes happens on any VMs.

Our target servers are Windows Server(2008, 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2)

We tried to get the notification using "Event Viewer" on different Windows servers (2008, 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2)

We were able to get event-logs only on one of our 2012 R2 server as described below on creation/deletion of VMs (on another 2012 R2 server, we did not got any such event, Is there any setting required on host computer to get Hyper-V event-logs in "Event Viewer"?)

Two 2012 R2 Hyper-V Clusters CSV Sharing LUN?

$

We currently have a Hyper-V Cluster running on 2012 R2 using CSV’s.  All the VHD’s are located across 3 CSV’s using 3 LUN’s which are hosted on 2 Equalic Storage Array using ISCSI.

We have setup another 2012 R2 Cluster to run side by side the existing one.  I already have the ISCSI initiators on Cluster 2 connected to the EqualLogic LUN’s.  The next step is adding ISCSI LUNS’s to the cluster disks and then making them CSV’s.  Before I do this I realized I should probably find out if it’s supported to have 2 completely separate 2012 R2 Clusters connected to the same ISCSI LUN and then sharing the same CSV’s?   Any direction here would be greatly appreciated.

Cannot use powershell vm commands on domain account

$

Hi,

I joined my computer to domain. Domain is fresh, no GPOs are made. Regular vm commands like get-vm, start-vm, etc work on local account, but when relog to domain acc (even like enterprise admin + admin + hyper-v admin + winrm...) all hyper-v powershell commands stop to work.

example 1:

PS C:\Users\user1> get-vm
PS C:\Users\user1>

Where are my vms?

example 2:

PS C:\Users\user1>start-vm vm1

start-vm : A parameter is invalid. Hyper-V was unable to find a virtual machine with name vm1.
At line:1 char:1
+ start-vm vm1
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    + CategoryInfo          : InvalidArgument: (vm1:String) [Start-VM], VirtualizationInvalidArgumentException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : InvalidParameter,Microsoft.HyperV.PowerShell.Commands.StartVMCommand

Parameter "is invalid" but when logged on local admin the same parameter "is valid". This problem is on windows 2012r2 and 8.1 pro.

The case is: fix it without: right click on powershell icon > run as admin > ...

"get-vm" is "dir" or "ls". Its shouldn`t req doing this things.

Thanks,

JerryTheMouse

Cannot get network connection to work on Win2k8 VM over Hyper-v

Hi All,

Here is the picture.

Hyper-v is installed on Sun Blade. The Blade has 4 network cards installed in it.

Management station is a windows vista station.

I have installed Hyper-V manager on management station and created a Virtual Machine over Hyper-V.

Installed Windows Server 2008 Enterprise on VM.

after installation, mouse was not working. so i installed system integration components via hyper-v manager.

i have also created virtual networks external , internal and private. i have bound external connection to a physical NIC on hyper-v.

now, the problem is that the network connection in Windows 2008 is not working. it says network cable is unplugged . whereas, all 4 NICs in blade are connected to network, their status is up and result of ipconfig in hyper-v shows that all 4 NICs have ip addresses. all pings work aswell.

now i know the problem is about communication between Win2k8 VM and Hyper-v virtual switch. i just dont know what it is :p

any body has any ideas?

thanks.

Dears,

I have a little information about below, and I kindly wants your help.

I am using Windows 2012 R2 cluster with Hyper-V replica broker from my main site to DR site.

I have 2 VMs in main site failed today (1 is running SQL, and another one is running IIS),

  1. Can I restore them from my DR Site without activating those 2 VMs in DR Site?
  2. I want to know what are the step by step to brought it from DR to main site.

Thank you

Virtualised Multi-Instance SQL Server Cluster - Processor Resource Management

$

Hi - We're in the process of implementing a multi-instance SQL 2014 guest cluster on Windows 2012 R2.  To our dismay, it seems that Windows System Resource Manager (WSRM) is deprecated in Windows 2012 R2, so we're now stuck for how best to manage CPU usage between SQL instances....

As far as I can see, I'm left with two options, but both of these have problems:

1) Use SQL Processor affinity within the guest cluster, with each SQL instance assigned to dedicated v-CPU.  However, I'm not certain that setting SQL Processor affinity within a VM will actually have the desired affect!?..

- When there is physical CPU capacity available, I'd hope Hyper-V would provide it to whichever v-CPU is demanding it.

- When VM processor demand exceeds the physical CPU capacity, I'd hope the SQL instances would receive a proportion of the physical CPU time according to the number of v-CPU(s) assigned through the affinity settings.

2) Use a VM (actually 2, because its a 2-node guest cluster) per SQL instance!..  This is not ideal, as we need multiple SQL instances and it would result in have an administrative and performance overhead

Does anyone have any information or thoughts on this?  How can we manage a virtualised multi-instance SQL deployment now that WSRM has been deprecated?  Help me please!

Network adapter vanishes every 15-20 days from 2008 R2 Guest VM.

Hello All,

I have server 2012 R2 host server installed with Hyper-V role. I have configured a guest VM with server 2008 R2.There are 2 NICs on host.

Both are Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet adapters. I have also enabled NIC teaming between them.

On host I can see 4 adapters under Network Connections:

1. NIC1

2. NIC2

3. Team NIC

4. vEthernet (Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver)

in Hyper-v, External switch is created using the Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver (There is no other adapter available to select).

I am facing the issue with guest vM. Every 15-20 days, the network adapter from the vm vanishes. I cant access internet from Gust VM. I can ping to Gateway, host server. But no internet.

Please help me to resolve this issue permanently. Every time I have to setup new VM.

Regards,

Kuldeep.

CentOS 5.10 Kernel Panic. Is it possible to run Mkinitrd after migration to Hyper-V 2012.

So, I've migrated a server running CentOS 5.10 over to Hyper-V 2012. I am getting Kernel Panic from all available kernels when attempting to boot the migrated server.

I realize that I should have run Mkinitrd on the server before migration. I am still able to do this on the production server as it is still in place and I am just testing the migrated/ virtualized server.

Even so, my question is:

Is it possible to run the Mkinitrd command on the server that is experiencing Kernel Panic post migration?

Thanks and Cheers,

I am using Hyper-V Core 2012 R2 standalone in a WORKGROUP.

I have placed my VMs in a folder called C:\SSD\VMs but want to move them to C:\RAID-5\VMs. The VHDs are in a different location and won't be changing. What's the best way to do this?
