Hyper-v with a virtual domain controller

Hello,

I’ve been tasked to upgrade a 2003 AD/file server to a 2008 R2 AD/file server for a small office. The current server is a physical box and is the only server at that location. I was wondering if I could upgrade the new server to server 2012 R2 with hyper-v and virtualize the 2008 R2 AD/file server. Does hyper-v 2012 R2 require a physical AD server?

Where is the Virtual Network Manager in my Hyper-V under Action in my Hyper-V Manager

Hi there - I would not say I am a novice at creating environment within Hyper-V. I have built or should I say created, and then deleted several virtual environments. I am familiar with the process of creating virtual hard disks, virtual machines and then selecting the appropriate switch etc.

To make a long story short I was having issues connecting my servers this time around. Worked fine the last time I built this same environment. I was researching various blogs and TechNet articles and they mention a "Virtual Network Manager."

I do not see it on my first laptop. I have other selections under the "Action" menu in my Hyper-Manager window but not a Virtual Network Manager. Went to my second laptop and that feature was missing on my second laptop too.

Where or how do I see it?

Thanks

Peter

Networking:

IP Address : Blank

Status : No Communication

I checked integration services and are all ticked OK.

It was running before but now create this problem for us, also person who setup has left the job.

Help me around to solve this problem

DPM 2012 Host has a virtual server stuck on 'Backing Up'

Hi,

I have a DPM 2012 server which has a virtual server stuck 'Backing up' and cannot be started. As the virtual server lives on a host with a number of other virtual servers the only way we have fixed this problem in the past is to move all the other virtual servers to another host and then reboot the host with the problem. This is very time consuming and wondered if there was a way to disconnect or stop the virtual server being backed up. I have come across a post that says to restart the 'Hyper V Virtual machine management' service but will this stop all the virtual servers or just the ability to manage them?

Thanks in advance.

Current best practice for Time service settings for Hyper-V 2012 R2 Host and guest OS's

I am trying to find out what the current best practice is for Time service settings in a Hyper-V 2012 environment. I find conflicting information. Can anyone point me in the right direction. I have found some different sources (links below) but again the are not consistent. Thanks

Windows cannot find the Microsoft Software License Terms?

Hello Community

    On WS2012 R2 Evaluation I have installed Hyper-V.

Now I created a VM in one folder then I created the VHD in another folder.

    I chose "Generation One".

I right click the VM and started it.  After the WS2012 R2 Evaluation started to
install on the VM an error message appeared stating:

"Windows cannot find the Microsoft Software License Terms. Make sure the
installation sources are valid and restart the installation."

The dvd the VM is attempting to install is the WS2012 R2 Eval I downloaded. I burned it to dvd
and installed it on this physical machine which is obviously working fine. But when I try to
install the WS2012 R2 Evaluation on the VM it is failing to install with that error message:

"Windows cannot find the Microsoft Software License Terms. Make sure the
installation sources are valid and restart the installation."

When the WS2012 R2 Eval is attempting to install on the VM it is not prompting me for Terms or
showing it is using the default for the installation key.

How do you install the WS2012 R2 Evaluation on a VM using Hyper-V without it looking for licensing
terms or installation keys?

    Thank you

How to get notified when changes happen on Hyper-V host or VMs

$

Is there a way to get notified on Hyper-V host or VM changes? Our intention is to notify the system-administrators on any changes.

1. How to get notified when new VM is created (or deleted) on Hyper-V.
2. How to get notified when any memory/CPU/disk is added (or deleted) on any VM(s).

In general:
- Get notified when any changes happens to Hyper-V host.
- Get notified when any changes happens on any VMs.

Our target servers are Windows Server(2008, 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2)

We tried to get the notification using "Event Viewer" on different Windows servers (2008, 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2)

We were able to get event-logs only on one of our 2012 R2 server as described below on creation/deletion of VMs (on another 2012 R2 server, we did not got any such event, Is there any setting required on host computer to get Hyper-V event-logs in "Event Viewer"?)

Hi All,

Had some issues with virtual switch, it never worked. Tried to enable/disable hyper-v.

Pretty much does not install anymore. Maybe some of you have an idea.

Here output from CBS.log based on it seems the virtual switch part is failing, but no idea why exactly:

Server 2012 R2 & Hyper V install

$

Have some VMware experience but completely new to Hyper V. We have a new DL380 G9 server we want to install Hyper V on so we can use & learn on in-house for future installs. Have a question about install & licensing as well as any best practices docs/links/suggestions that are relevant. Maybe not asking my searches right but not finding the docs I am interested in.

Hyper V appears to install somewhat differently than ESX or VSphere. Understand that Server 2012 R2 Standard licenses you for one physical or 2 Hyper V servers. Do you just install Server 2012 R2 Standard and then enable the Hyper V Role to allow for creation of your 2 Hyper V Hosts? If so does the "physical" install take one of the available licenses with an end result of (1) Physical & (1) Hyper V server?

Anticipated test platform install

DL380 G9, 1P 8core, 32GBRAM

2x146GB 15K SAS drives RAID1 for initial OS install

3x300GB 10K SAS drives RAID5 for Hyper V installs

Expect 2 initial Hyper V Hosts with a max of 4 - test platform for learning only

Any thoughts, suggestions, docs, best practices, etc welcome.

VM falls back to startup memory after some time when Dynamic Memory is enabled event id 19548

Hello All,

We have multiple Server 2008R2 VM's on different Server 2012R2 hosts that have the following problem.

VM Dynamic Memory enabled
Startup 2048Mb
Minimal 1024Mb
Maximum 10240Mb

VM starts up and allocates memory, Memory demand is ok and Memory status also. Sometimes after a reboot the Assigned memory is 2048Mb, the Memory demand and Memory status columns are empty (hyper-v manager), dynamic memory is still enabled according to the column and inside the VM the maximum memory is 2048Mb. On the host I get the following event:

Event id 19548

The dynamic memory balancer could not add memory to the virtual machine 'vm01' because its configured maximum has been reached (Virtual machine ID 5AC8B7DE-0848-49E2-AD0B-7D2C1A56803D).

There is plenty of RAM available on the host to cover twice the maximum configured RAM. All the VM's and Hosts have the latest updates, all the integration services are running inside the VM and there is no message in the event log inside the VM. I can't figure out why this event id is generated because there is more than enough RAM. I looked in several event logs on the Host and inside the VM but the only thing I can find is the one above (that's related to this problem I guess). Any help? for now the workaround is to reboot the server and watch what it does.

Peter

Unable to install Integration Components in Server 2008 x86 VM

It seems i'm running into a similar problem. I converted a Windows 2008 Server VM with MS Virtual machine converter 3.0. It converted ok and i was able to install SP2 onto it (it was a SP1 machine), but after that i can't seem to get the Win12R2 IC installed, it reports the same error as above.

The vmguestsetup.log says this;

##### END: UPDATE HAL - Error coe = 0x0
##### START: INSTALL KMDF
About to load DLL D:\support\x86\WdfCoInstaller01009.dll
About to call WdfPreDeviceInstallEx
WdfPredeviceInstallEx failed with error C8000222
##### END: INSTALL KMDF - Error code = 0xC8000222
Detected worker thread exit
Worker thread error codde = C8000222
Exit code = 0xEA60
I researched the error codes and found there are more people having trouble with 2008 server as guest.
I tried a lot;

- disabling all not-windows services
- installed a legacy adapter

But nothing helped, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Enhanced session connection to a VM-no audio recording

$

I have a set of VMs that I'd like to connect to with enhanced session and audio redirection, but for some reason audio recording has stopped working through the enhanced session connection.  The host is windows 8.1, and the guest is server 2012 R2, and I have the correct policies enabled on both host and guest.  I can connect the enhanced session with the "record from this computer" selected for audio capture, but on the guest I only have playback, not capture.

What's really strange is that if I connect a second virtual NIC to this VM with a public IP address, I can RDP directly into this machine (through a regular RDP session, not the hyperV enhanced session), and recording redirection works just fine.  So far I've tried:

  • rebooting host and guest
  • disabling and re-enabling audio redirection
  • removing the "remote audio" device in the guest's device manager

I've also tried USB redirection using a USB audio device, and this works through enhanced session, but I'd also like to be able to get an audio connection using just the default audio device.  Anyone have any ideas?

USB Pass-Through From Windows 8.1 Host To Windows Server 2012 R2 VM

I want to be able to connect with a Windows Mobile Device through Windows Mobile Device Center, within a Virtual Machine.  When connecting through the Hyper-V Manager and through Remote Desktop, under "Other supported RemoteFX USB devices", I can see the Symbol USB Sync Cradle.  In the VM, in Device Manager, I don't see a USB connection.  In the VM, I don't see any meaningful errors in the Event Viewer.

Host:  Windows 8.1 Enterprise Hyper-V on a Domain.  Upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro.  When this computer was originally installed with Windows 8 Pro, Hyper-V was enabled.  I removed Hyper-V, and installed VMWare Player, because I wanted USB Pass-through.  I then uninstalled VMWare and installed VirtualBox.  Recently, I uninstalled VirtualBox, upgraded to Windows 8.1 Enterprise, and enabled Hyper-V.

Virtual Machine OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 on a Workgroup.  Started out with being a VMWare VM, using VMWare Player.  Moved to VirtualBox.  USB Pass-through was working in both those virtual environments.  Used Disk2VHD to convert the VM to a VHDX file.

On the Host:

  1. Windows Mobile Device Center is connected to a Motorola Windows Mobile Device (MC959X) sitting in a Symbol USB Cradle.  The OS on the scanner is Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 Classic CE OS 5.2.29217 (Build 29217.5.3.12.26).  Advanced Networking (USB to PC) is not enabled.
  2. Enabled RemoteFX.
  3. In the RDP file, and in the Registry, added the GUID's for:
  • WPD "{eec5ad98-8080-425f-922a-dabf3de3f69a}";
  • Windows Mobile "{6AC27878-A6FA-4155-BA85-F98F491D4F33}";
  • USB Device "{88BAE032-5A81-49f0-BC3D-A4FF138216D6}";
  • Windows CE USB Device "{25dbce51-6c8f-4a72-8a6d-b54c2b4fc835}";
  • GUID_DEVINTERFACE_USB_DEVICE "{A5DCBF10-6530-11D2-901F-00C04FB951ED}"

Ran "sfc /scannow"

All Microsoft Updates are current.

What am I missing?

Slow IDE Performance

$

Hi, I have approx 800 virtual machines, on a FailoverCluster, connected using FC to a Compellent SAN (50% SAS, 50% SATA). some Windows 2003 R2, some Windows 2008, some Windows 2008 R2, some Windows 2012 and some Windows 2012 R2.

I tried VMs on both Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.

When I copy a file over an IDE disk, I never go over 90 MB/s. 100 MB/s when copying from the network to the Drive.

When I copy a file over a SCSI disk, I copy between 350 MB/s and 450 MB/s.

If I start a copy over an IDE disk, and, at the same time, I start a copy over a SCSI disk, the copy speed on the IDE drop between 50 MB/s and 75 MB/s, and the SCSI disk copy at 350 MB/s+. Then speed come back on the IDE when the SCSI is over.

If I start two copy on two different IDE disks, the first copy will hang for a couple second when the second copy starts, and I won't go over 70 MB/s on each disk.

The 3 disks are Fixed, and on the same CSV (same LUN). When doing file copy on the HOST, I have the same performance as the SCSI VHDx.

When I create Gen 2 VMs (100% SCSI), they are incredibly more responsive than the Gen 1 (IDE).

How can I fix the IDE performance? Thanks!

I have setup hyper-v server 2012 on my server. there is only 1 VM running with 4 GB ram & 1.5 TB expanding hard drive.

I have found error in guest os "disk 1 has been surprise removed"can any one tell me what is this error exactly.  after this error i have checked hyper-v manager & found machine is showing"Merge In Progress"

i never saw "disk 1 has been surprise removed"error. is this error occur because of hyper-v server is not configured properly.

Also i have server 2008 R2 DC x64 which is working as hyper-v host. I have checked event logs of same and found following error."The disk signature of disk 2 is equal to the disk signature of disk 1."what is this.

Adding promiscuous mode in server 2012 hyper-v

I am running a esxi lab within hyper-v and the vms within this do not want to connect to the network. I have been told that I need to enable promiscuous mode on the virtual switch and I can't find the option anywhere. I cannot get guest OSes to connect to the network under the vmware vsphere.

Is there any way to enable this? Please respond. Thank you.

Keystrokes don't apply to the Hyper-V VM only the host

$

Hello Community

From dvd I installed WS2012 R2 Evaluation on a physical machine.

Then I installed Hyper-V and created a VM which and then
installed that same WS2012 R2 Evaluation dvd onto the VM.

The problem is that although I created the VM it just appears
on the screen. The  VM screen displays:

    "Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to sign in."

However any keyboard key that gets pressed only affects the
 physical machine (host).

The only thing I can do to the VM is drag it around the screen
or with the mouse click the toolbar selections with the mouse but
I can't access the VM with keystrokes.

In other words I can't sign-in to the VM and promote it to a
domain controller or do anything else to it.

    The Virtual Manager\VM  shows:
         "State" is "Running"
There is only one Network Adapter and it is the Virtual Switch with an IPIPA Ip address.
         512 MB RAM

Why doesn't the VM acknowledge keyboard keystrokes?

    Thank you

DPM online backup causes Hyper-V Manager uptime resets

$

We are experiencing resets of the uptime counter in the Hyper-V Manager when backups are taken by the DPM (r2)

The VMs that suffer from the issue are all on a new R2 cluster that uses another SOFS cluster via SMB for all VM disks.
All requirements for online backup should be in place, and all servers run fine while being backed up. When backing up the servers do create a new checkpoint, but as i understand this is the correct behavior when using DPM R2 on a Server 2012 R2 cluster.

Before installing the SMB share VSS role, and upgrading Integration services on some VMs, only Offline backup was an option, but after correcting these issues DPM allows online backup - but uptimes are still being reset.

No servers are entering saved state or otherwise being reset while backed up. Event logs show no errors regarding to "hot" backup, and the guest OS' show correct uptime when checked .

Is the resetting uptime a sign that i still have issues with online backup, even if everything seems correct? And if not, how do i avoid the uptime being reset. I know that its not technically even the correct uptime, and even resets from migrations, but still..

Reboot guest - receive new nic

$

(This isn't a citrix issue.. it's HyperV - I think - but Citrix background below just for info. The HyperV part seems to be killing me here. This incident relates to )

A slight problem has resurfaced during Citrix provisioned image update. The citrix side of is it kinda academic, the reason it's being a pain is in the image, the virtual machines have two NICs, one to boot off of (a legacy adapter), and one for citrix ICA traffic (synthetic).

This has always worked great, ICA is bound to the right one and job done. All the VMs boot off the same provisioned image and we're off to the races.

Today I updated the citrix image - when I boot *some* VMs, it decides the synthetic adapter has somehow changed, and installs a new one. Which ICA doesn't bind to as it's not there at boot time, instead it attempts to bind to the non-routable boot nic and of course clients then can't connect.

I'm at a total loss to explain how the guest has decided it has a new NIC in there. If I show hidden devices, I can see the old one of course, but the fact it's not there until the device has been installed is causing me a problem.

For fun, I booted the server I was using back on the old image, the one that had worked perfectly well - and it pulled a new NIC instance, just as the new image did. This leads me to suspect something is up with the host as of course the October image hasn't changed, but I can't figure out what. Making matters worse, there are 5 servers running on that host, all on the same image - and the one I rebooted is the one showing this behaviour. The others are fine. As these are provisioned images, they ALL boot off the same one, and any changes are discarded upon reboot.

Any ideas? Host is 2008R2 datacentre, guests are 2008R2x64 standard.

Thanks

AW

Bit of background - we've a Citrix XenApp 6 farm which provides desktops and apps to thin client devices. There's around a dozen physical hosts, running in the region of 45 VMs that the clients in turn to connect to. We've two base images (using Citrix provisioned image) that are updated monthly and all guests boot off one of those.

NVGRE for 3 test environments

Hi Expert,

My design is as follows:

1. 4 Hyper-V Hosts.

2. Test environments A (192.168.1.#/24, 15VMs),  Test environments B (192.168.1.#/24, 15VMs), Test environments C (192.168.1.#/24, 15VMs); these 3 test environments will be isolated by Hyper-V virutal subnet (NVGRE).

3. we want to access these 3 test environments via public network (172.17.0.0/16).

4. we are planning to build RRAS for NAT purpose (publish the specific port for each test environement).

5. My question is that, how many RRAS server is needed?

Option 1: 1 RRAS server, 4 network adapter configured (1 public, 3 for each virtual subnet), but I don't know if it's supported by RRAS, since the subnet for each test environment is the same IP subnet.

Option 2: 3 RRAS server, each RRAS server for each test environment, for each RRAS server, 2 network adapter configured (1 public, 1 for virtual subnet).

Which one is the better solution?

Thanks in advance!
