Hi,

I test to configure  for network teaming on the hyper-v host 2012 R2

  1. Using Switch Independent – Address Hash ,Active /Active Mode   I gain Heavy outbound ,
  2. But I am afraid from negative effect on the Virtual machines connectivity and live migration   , So
  3. what are the expected Negative effect of using "Switch Independent – Address Hash"  instead of "Switch Independent – Hyper-v port" on the Hyper-v VMs

File Copy Saturates ISCSI Volume

Hi,

Following on from my previous thread which was resolved :Converged Team - No Ping

We strictly try to troubleshoot before asking and at all times do our best to avoid posting to forums.  Brief Intro :

We have a 2 x node Dell R520 server 2012 Hyper-v setup.  Clustering not setup yet.
Each server has the following nic specs:
2 x on-board Broadcom’s
1 x 4 port Intel.

2 of the ports on the Intel nic are used strictly for IScsi traffic.
The remaining nics are used in a LACP team.  VMQ has been disabled.  The LACP team is connected to 2 x Stacked 3750 Cisco switches.  All appropriated Trunk ports, speed, media, vlans and MTU have been applied to the switch config and ensure ISCSI traffic is restricted to the VLANS.  All devices (Servers and Synology) have redundant paths to the switches.

A V-switch has been setup with standard networks connected to it (Management, Migration and Cluster)
All networks are on separate subnets and Vlans.

ISCSI is provided via an ISCSI Lun on a Synology  RS10613xs+ Cluster with 15k 900gb drives with MPIO enabled and 2 nics on each node dedicated to ISCSI vlans.

ISCSI targets are successfully added to each Hyper-v node and MPIO enabled.  Have verified I can see the 2 sessions for each target from each node.  Jumbo frames enabled on each nic on the Hyper-v nodes along with the SAN and the switches.  Testing confirmed.

Initial testing is ok, performance is good but can be better.

Our problem is that the moment we attempt to read or write anything to the ISCSI volumes (STD file copy), all VMs grind to a halt.  Pausing or stopping the file copy to or from the ISCSI volumes restores normal connectivity on the VM’s.

Examining the Synology cluster we can see it’s under no stress and happily serving the LUNS.
Confirmed the traffic for both the file copy and VM traffic is only occurring on the ISCSI networks / VLANS across the hyper-v nodes and the SAN.

The VM’s that are currently running are under no stress or load.
A simple copy from the ISCSI volume and to the volume gives an average of 600MB/S (while peaking to 800MB/s at times)

We are at a loss as to where the congestion / bottleneck is coming from or occurring.

Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks
Sam

Hi All,

Had some issues with virtual switch, it never worked. Tried to enable/disable hyper-v.

Pretty much does not install anymore. Maybe some of you have an idea.

Here output from CBS.log based on it seems the virtual switch part is failing, but no idea why exactly:

Storage IO Best Practices for Virtualization LAB

Hi Guys,

Two Question Please..

First Q - I have two 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.. what is the best in term of performance for Multi-LAB virtual machines use them separately or raid 0 them? i will run like 4 virtual machines.. currently two on each HDD

Second Q - I have three SSD Samsung 850 PRO 1x256GB and 2x128GB .. and i would like to use only 256GB .. Also in term of performance for O.S. and Multi-virtual Machines "two or three VMs" use the 256GB or two 128 in RAID 0 or two 128 separately ?

Yes i am aware of data lose potential in raid 0 and i don't care because it's a lab VMs and O.S. anyway. i only care about performance :)

And last i am using Z97 Chipset and i think TRIM is supported with RAID 0 on 9 Series?

Thanks in advance

Hello Community

If we are using Hyper-V to create Virtual Machines and VHD's do we need to use VMware with it?

    If so when?

Capturing image in Oracle Linux only capture the changes in the OS partition

Hi,

If anyone could advise on this, we have launched a Oracle Linux VM and have partitioned the hard disk the way we want.

We have then installed our applications and configured the database.

Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda3             7.4G  5.4G  1.8G  76% /
tmpfs                 3.5G   76K  3.5G   1% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1             485M   50M  410M  11% /boot
/dev/sda2             2.0G  804M  1.1G  42% /tmp
/dev/sdb1             178G  1.7G  167G   1% /oracle
/dev/sdb2             104G  188M   98G   1% /orabackup

After this we created an image of the VM by following the steps from your documentation on how to capture an image.

After this we then launch a VM using that image using steps from your documentation on how to launch a custom VM.

In the status of the VM [Provisioning it suddenly times out] then if we restart the VM the status changes to RUNNING but we can't connect to the VM.

Also if we stick to the original partition.

Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda3             7.4G  5.4G  1.8G  76% /
tmpfs                 3.5G   76K  3.5G   1% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1             485M   50M  410M  11% /boot
/dev/sda2             2.0G  804M  1.1G  42% /tmp
/dev/sdb1             206G  105M 206G  1% /mnt/resource

All data in the /mnt/resource is not being captured when preparing the VM as a template.

Kindly advise if there's anything we've missed.

USB Support in Hyper-V. Very Confused.

I am running Windows 8.1. I start Hyper-V and need to install which Operating Systems to have USB support inside of the VM? Is this possible? I tried windows 7 and I do not see Enhanced Session Mode. I tried windows 8.1 and again I do not see Enhanced Session Mode. Is it possible to have USB access in a Hyper-V VM?

Unable to get internet on Hyper-V VM

Hi,

I am running one VM on my Hyper-v Server.

The physical machine has 2 network adapters and i have created two Virtual switches using those adapter - Internal and External.

Internal is connected with my LAN and is working fine and the domain name is showing.

External is connected directly with the ISP and it has static public IP. I am not getting internet using this line.

However if i am providing the static IP to the physical server in which the hyper-v is running, it works fine. But when i use the same with VM it does not work.

Am really confused please help.

Thanks Chandan

Multi-forest communication on same host

I have a single hyper-v host running on server 2012R2. On the host I have two domain controllers in separate forests. Domain A is connected to an external network and has the subnet 192.168.200.1/24. Domain B is connected to an internal network and has the subnet 192.168.25.1/24. How would I go about making the two domain controllers talk to one another using name resolution?

Hyper-V 2012 Live Migration of guest cluster causing NTFS Warnings

$

Hi,

We have a 9 x node Hyper-V 2012 Cluster with the following hotfixes installed:

KB2806542
KB2823643
KB2832478
KB2838043
KB2840681
KB2853422
KB2878635
KB2894032
KB2894464
KB2913695

We have a 2012 SQL Failover guest cluster with SAN attached storage using virtual HBAs.

The guest cluster nodes live migrate successfully however we have experienced two issues where the node in the guest cluster develops NTFS warnings once the node successfully live migrates to another hyper-v host- event ID 140

The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: F:, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume18.

({Device Busy}

The device is currently busy.)

We have a number of other guest clusters that live migrate successfully without causing NTFS warnings on the guest machines. We can resolve this issue by offlining the cluster disks but I was wondering if anyone could help with why this is happening please?

Guest ethernet bridging not working

Hi, I have the following setup:

Host system:
Windows Server 2008 R2 x64, Hyper-V installed

Guest system:
Windows Server 2008 R2 x64
One virtual NIC

I want to install OpenVPN on the guest system. To do that, OpenVPN creates its own TAP adapter and requires a network bridge to an internet-facing NIC on the machine. This is what my network connections looks like:

The Network Bridge is just between the Hyper-V virtual "LAN Adapter" and the "OpenVPN Adapter". But with the bridge enabled, I have no network connectivity. That is, if I right-click and view "Status" of the bridge, it shows many packets sent, but zero received. After some experimentation, I've found:

  1. With both LAN and OpenVPN adapters added to the bridge, I have no network connectivity.
  2. With just the LAN adapter added to the bridge and the OpenVPN adapter disabled, still no network connectivity.
  3. If I remove the LAN Adapter from the bridge or if I delete the bridge, the LAN Adapter itself then correctly connects and I have network connectivity.

Does anybody have any idea what's going on?

Replication Over Direct Connection

$

0

I've setup two 2012 (not R2) hosts with two clients.  I've enable replication through the main Cisco switch using the primary host name of each host (say host1 and host2).  I have a spare 10GB link on each host that I would like to be able to direct the replication over verses going over the 1GB main switch (seems like the right thing to do?).

I've set the 10GB ports up back to back (not through the switch) and assigned them static IP addresses on a different network (example 11.0.0.1 and 11.0.0.2).  I then put these IPs in the hosts file with names "rep1" and "rep2".  They can ping each other just fine.

The problem is that the replication "wizard" doesn't like the host file names as much as it likes the domain names.  It doesn't pick up the necessary info when querying the host.  replication is set to use http and Kerberos.  Also, we are on a closed network with our own domain; no outside contact at all.

I am by no means an expert on this, so I am hoping its as simple as adding the rep1 and rep2 "network" to the DC or DNS and maybe enabling routing?  Actually it'd be nice if all traffic between the two servers went over the direct connect.

Thanks

My Virtual Upgraded Clone and the physical machine that was originally cloned on same domain and what to expect?

I have recently upgraded a Windows XP machine to Windows Vista and ultimately to Windows 7 32-bit

I then created an entirely new physical Windows 7 Machine

I need to perform a Windows backup restore from virtualized copy of Windows 7 to the new machine

Question??? Do I have to turn off the original Windows XP PC? I see that the virtualized upgrade has the same name as the physical XP and only one entry in Active Directory reference the original Windows XP not the upgraded virtual clone???

Working with Hyper-V as a newbie

Hello All,

I am sure this going to cause some to have a laugh but unfortunately I cant seem to find the answer anywhere. I am in a situation where I have a new server with 2012STD installed. One software company cannot run there software on a virtual machine due to serial port issues. Since they have to run on the base system and OS, can I still safely add a Hyper V role and use it? It seems that everyone builds a stripped base machine, adds the HyperV role and then builds everything under the Hyper V. I wanted to have the ability with them running on the Native machine platform to still be able to add a Hyper V role and run additional programs with the the virtual machine and not have to run multiple programs on the base.

Hope this makes sense.

Adding promiscuous mode in server 2012 hyper-v

I am running a esxi lab within hyper-v and the vms within this do not want to connect to the network. I have been told that I need to enable promiscuous mode on the virtual switch and I can't find the option anywhere. I cannot get guest OSes to connect to the network under the vmware vsphere.

Is there any way to enable this? Please respond. Thank you.

Hi,

what Windows 7 version is used for Hyper-V pooled and static vdi?

Don't think that using FULL W7 OS is practical in both scenarios.

What would be the best choice?

Thanks
