Hi ,

i had 2 hyperV 2012R2 servers ,and attached iscsi disks to this servers (with multipath ,lacp)

one of them is primary and the other is secondary server.

i had installed 2 Virtual machines to our primary HyperV server as vm1 and vm2 .The vm1 is located on  local disk of the HyperV ,and the vm2 is located on the disk which is ISCSI connected to HyperV server.

i can succesfully replicate the vm1 ,but could not replicate the vm2 (located on ISCI disk) to HyperV secondary server.

And it gives me this error.

Any help??

Could not connect to VM from RDWeb that is created from 2008R2 then migrated to Hyper-V 3.0

I have a VM created in 2008R2.  For some reason, I could not recreate the VM because its installed with an application that only vendor can install. So my only way to migrate the VM to 2012R2 is copy the VHD.

I created unmanaged collection on 2012R2, created a new VM and attached the VHD. Add the new VM to unmanage pool. Everything works well. I could run the VM from Hyper-V except I could not connect to it from RDWeb.  I followed the instructions from http://blogs.crayon.com/2014/07/04/migrated-vdi-virtual-machines-hangs-in-the-loading-the-virtual-machine-state/ because I have very similar problem but no avail.

Is there anyway I could make it work?

Server 2012 Hyper-V and StarWind VSan

Hey All,

I have the 2 node version of Starwind and I am going to be running the hyperconverged method. (Using internal storage and replicating between the 2)

I had 2 questions:

  • I was wondering what I should do with my NICs as it changes when you have Starwind in the picture? I have 2 10Gb NICs and 6 1Gb NICs. I am using the 10Gb NICs for the synchronization between the StarWind Cluster and Hearbeat. What should I do as far as VM Traffic, Live Migration, etc.
  • When using SSD's for the Level 2 cache piece of Starwind, how big typically would they need to be, and would you mirror a couple of these together?

Thank you so much for your help!

R710

Quad Core 2.26GHz Intel Xeon E5520 8MB Cache

24GB DDR3 1066MHz (6 x 4GB 1066MHz Modules)

Running

(2) Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard

Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Host

VM-1 = AD DS, DNS, DHCP

VM-2 = Peach Tree/Sage 50 with 4 users connected

VM-3 =  Time Clock Plus software connected to 5 Users

VM-4 = File Storage Service and Print Services for 25 Users

Does this make sense?

What HDD configurations should be considered?

Example:With 8 Bay server

(2) 128GB HDD - Raid 1 - HOST

(4) 300GB HDD - Raid 10 - Partitioned into volumes for each VM

                        Volume 1: VM1 - 100GB for AD DS, DNS, DHCP - 100GB

                        Volume 2: VM2 - 100GB for Peach Tree/Sage 50

Volume 3: VM3 -100GB for Time Clock Plus

Volume 4: VM4 -100GB for File Storage Service and Print Services for 25 Users

(2) 2TB SATA - Raid 1 - File Storage

Eventually I'll go with ISCSI-NAS for user file storage but right now I can't. What are your thoughts?

Hyper V Manager can on longer manager all virtual machines

We have this issue have in few client of ours running 2012 or 2012 R2. From time to time those Hyper V base will lose the ability to manage all the virtual machines. There is nothing in Hyper V manager and you can't add itself into the management console. Restart the hyper V manager service do nothing for it. the only way we can do is get into each each vms to shut them down and do a  restart on the hyper V base OS. Those affected some are clustered some are just stand alone.

Add-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl and a subnet as a RemoteIPAddress parameter

$

Hello,

I get some strange results using an Add-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl cmdlet.

If I provide a subnet address as a RemoteIPAddress parameter  - the Add-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl cmdlet doesn't work as expected,

-RemoteIPAddress <any subnet address> works exactly as -RemoteIPAddress ANY.

But according to the documentation here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn464289.aspx
and here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn375962.aspx#bkmk_detailed
it's possible to use a subnet address with RemoteIPAddress.

My environment (Steps to reproduce):

1) I have a physical server with a Windows Server 2012 R2 with kb2919355 and hyper-v role installed and a VM with a public IP-address and guest OS Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

Hyper-V switch which is used by the VM configured as follows:

PS C:\> Get-VMSwitch External | fl AllowManagementOS
AllowManagementOS : False

No any VMNetworkAdapterAcl or VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcls configured for the VM.

2) ping <VM IP-address> -t from outside networks works.

3) ping google.com (or something pingable) -t from VM OS works.

4) I run a following command on the hyper-v host:

Add-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl -VMName test -Action Deny -Direction Outbound -Protocol "1" -Weight 11 -RemoteIPAddress 10.0.0.0/24

Both ping commands started to return "Request timed out" at once,
despite the fact that there are no hosts from 10.0.0.0/24 subnet in the test environment.

Here is the VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAclconfig:

ParentAdapter      : Microsoft.HyperV.PowerShell.VMNetworkAdapter
Direction          : Outbound
Action             : Deny
LocalIPAddress     : ANY
RemoteIPAddress    : 10.0.0.0/24
LocalPort          : ANY
RemotePort         : ANY
Protocol           : 1
Weight             : 11
Stateful           : False
IdleSessionTimeout : 0
IsolationID        : 0
ToRemove           : False

5) Running Get-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl -VMName test | Remove-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl restores ping replies.

I guess I can use any valid IPv4 network address instead of 10.0.0.0/24 and I will get the same result (I've already tried 123.0.0.0/8 and so on)

Using a single IP-address instead of subnet works without any problem.

So, is that a bug?

Bad Performance in VHDX

Hello everybody,

i have a huge performance Problem with one of my VHDX Files mountet to a Windows Server 2012 Virtual Machine. We have a 4 Node (Server 2012) Hyper-V Failover Cluster with several VM's running. There are 3 Cluster Shared Volumes on a 2 Node LeftHand Storage Cluster.

One of my VM's is running as a Fileserver. And since a few Weeks, the Performance of the Fileservers Data Partition is terrible! When i try to copy a file from the Data Partition to one of my physical Hosts (eg. Backup Server) i got a Bandwidth of max. 10 MB/sec. Same precedure on another Partition of the File Server gives me about 60 MB/sec. Only the Data Partition-VHDX is painfully slow! I also mounted the Data Partition VHDX to another Server to exclude the Fileserver itself as the Problem. No Changes.

Other VHDX Files on the same CSV are running as they should. So i think the storage is not the problem. Are there any improvements within the VHDX i can do!?

how to configure CPU amd memory resource pooling

$

We have a scenario where we are creating multiple VM's under HyperV . Now we would like to have the Resource pooling with respect to CPU and RAM to be configured and VM's to be created using that option.

Below are the details of the requirement:

One important note. we don’t want to lock CPU and RAM resources per the VMs, but have them utilize resources from a pool.

We can still set a high utilization mark, for 1 Core or 4GB , etc. This will allow the best performance overall and allow use to create more VMs than there is RAM and CPU Cores available. This is the true benefit of virtualization to have taken full advantage. we  don’t want to get locked out of utilizing this scheme if initially not configured as such.

  1. We may look into locking CPU and RAM only for the performance VMs to ensure repeatable results.

Need your help in this regard at the earliest.

Would like to hear from you at the earliest.

I have two Windows2012 server(serverA,serverB) and installed Hyper-V.

I tried Hyper-V replica replication from serverA to serverB.

One guest Windows2008R2 of serverA is replicated and still working fine.

But the other Windows2008R2 guest of serverA can not be replicated.

When I tried to replicate , I had failed to enable replication with 0x80004004 error like the below.

I tried solution 1 and 2 of the below link but same error still happen.

Hi,

I have a virtual machine which I would like to communicate to one of our managed switches over a COM DB9 connector, the physical server has the COM port and I can see there is COM 1 and COM 2 on the virtual machine, but it is asking for a named pipe, how would i configure this to show the COM ports to the VM?

thanks

revert snapshot

I am testing checkpoint options (didn't touch it for a while)

I created 3 snapshots. (1,2,3).

Wanted to revert snapshot 3. By this I mean that I wanted to remove changes made in snapshot 3 and bring it to the initial state of snapshot 3. Since Revert option is in the menu of the VM and not snapshot I highlighted snapshot 3 (what I wanted to revert) and clicked Revert. It asked me do you want to revert to previous snapshot I told YES.

The result the changes of snapshot 2 was removed. So I have 1 and 3.

What I did wrong?

Server 2012 R2 w HyperV Role - Guest NICs disconnecting during backup Event ID 12598

Hello, we are seeing Guest VM's disconnect from the network in the event logs during our backup window. We are using CommVault 10 SP8 on Hyper-V 2012 R2 with Hyper-V role, we are fully patched and using the current Integration Services. We see this on both stand alone Hyper-V servers and clusters. The servers are being backed up with VSS and are not going into a saved state as far as I can tell, they are being hot backed up.

We are seeing event ID 12598 network adaptor disconnected  from virtual network on the host logs under Hyper-V-SynthNic. I would like to try and stop this from happening so monitoring software will stop marking servers offline. Any ideas?

Hello,

i am having some hyper-v-machines where WOL is enabled in the bios.

With windows 8.x on this machine, wol is working well.

On the same machine with hyper-v 2012R2 CORE wol isn`t working.

How can enable wol (power management) on the specific nic within the hyper-v Core?

I have a single hyper-v host running on server 2012R2. On the host I have two domain controllers in separate forests. Domain A is connected to an external network and has the subnet 192.168.200.1/24. Domain B is connected to an internal network and has the subnet 192.168.25.1/24. How would I go about making the two domain controllers talk to one another using name resolution?

Hyperthreaded CPU Scheduling via Hyper-V

$

I searched forums and documents (and books) all over for this answer pertaining to Hyper-V.

When a guest VM is assigned 2 virtual CPUs with 100% reservation on a Hyper-V host with a processor featuring hyper-threading, does the guest VM receive guaranteed access to twophysical cores or two logical cores?  For a thought experiment, on a single socket 2-core processor with hyper threading (4 logical cores), from my understanding Hyper-V takes physical core 0 by default leaving a single physical core for VMs.  What would be the result of configuring a VM with 2 virtual CPUs on this host with 100% reservation?  Would you be allowed to?  Would the vCPU scheduling be across two logical processors or would the VM fail to start because it requires two physical cores?

How to move from vmware ESXi 5.5 to Hyper-V 2012 R2 on same hardware?

$

I have Vmware ESXi 5.5 Update 1 with two disks, called RAID0 (3.6 TB) and RAID5 (10.9 TB).

I am tired of having to rebuild ESXi every sixty days for home use so I am planning on moving to Hyper-V, but I'm a little nervous. I don't have swing kit, so will have to repurpose my existing 1 year old quite powerful machine (Intel i7 32 Gb RAM two sets of RAID storage internal), 3 NICs. Features I need from VMware are:

  1. Ability to snapshot and revert to snapshot (running and stopped VM)
  2. Ability to move VMs between my different storage areas (RAID0 and RAID5)
  3. Ability to set up internal networks to the Hyper-V host so I can set up virtual labs on their own virtual networks
  4. USB pass through to the VM
  5. Auto start VMs with the host.
  6. Auto shut down VMs with the host.
  7. Templating of OSs - mainly Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 R2, but also Centos 7. Can I convert my ESXi templates to Hyper-V?
  8. Good performance from both Windows and Linux machines
  9. Easy management from a workstation on the network.
  10. Install Hyper-V to USB flash drive plugged in to the server.

Can Hyper-V do all that?

Also, I have a migration plan. Will this work?

  1. In ESXi move all machines for migration from RAID5 to RAID0 storage.
  2. Install Hyper-V on the host to USB flash drive (16 GB)
  3. Format RAID5 storage so it can take vhds. (NTFS?)
  4. Set up networks - have three NICs on the host.
  5. Install management software on my workstation
  6. Convert VMware vmx machines on RAID0 storage to vhd based machines on RAID5 storage. How to do this? My machines vary from v8,9 to vmx10.
  7. Power on VMs and perform checks.

Any comments? I'm particularly concerned about the conversion process from VMware to Hyper-V and the reliability of it. Total size of VMs to convert is just under 3 TB.
