Hyper-V Licensing

$

Hi there,

We have the following scenario. We want to implement a virtualization environment with Windows 2012 Hyper-V. We already purchased a Windows 2012 Datacenter license. We have a server with 2 cpu's and 256 GB of ram. Details are not important here about hardware.

Now I know that if I install Windows 2012 Datacenter and then install hyper-v, I can create as many VM's as I want, and as long as they are 2012, they will be licensed automatically from the host server's license, since they are unlimited in Datacenter.

However we have software to install on those VM's that specifically require Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2 to run. Now is there a way I can use the 2012 Datacenter license to license those VM's? Or do I have to purchase 2008 licenses for every VM that is not 2012?

AVHD directly attached...do I need to merge with VHD before moving?

I am installing a new Hyper-V host and moving some VM's. I ran into an issue where a VM with snapshots would not merge and the VM went into Saved-Critical and upon reboot went missing.

I followed the steps in this article ("Better alternatives to manually merging snapshots in Server 2008 R2" I can't post a link until my acct is verified) and got the latest snapshot mounted and the VM back up and it's fine. Now I need to move the avhd to the new host.

Is it safe to move the avhd to a new host and remount it? Or, should I merge with the original vhd and then move? If so, how...because there are no snapshots listed in Hyper-V Manager?

Hello,

I have System Center Advisor telling me to disable “Microsoft Failover Cluster Virtual Adapter Performance Filter" on any host cluster that hosts a guest cluster. In my case, all of them. KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2872325/

The KB never talks about negative impact, there has to be something? Anyone know what the impact it? Anyone do this?

Booting from a Hyper V Virtual Disk

Hey everyone!

I'm facing a little issue, I got a Windows 7 Virtual Machine running on Windows Server 2012 as host OS. I need to boot into the machine natively. To do so I followed this guide: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825691.aspx , basically only point 4 of it, as I do not wish to wipe my host system's HDD and I already have a Virtual Hard Disk Image. When trying to boot into it (i.e. choosing Windows 7 in the bootloader) all I get is "Windows failed to start, Insert your windows installation disk and restart" - error code 0xc03a0001. Obviously the image is bootable when using Hyper V. I would be very grateful for some suggestions what might have gone wrong.

Thanks

Hi All,

I moved a 2008R2 VM guest from a 2008R2 host to a 2012R2 host.  Two other VM guests that I moved went without an issue.

When attempting to install the updated Integration Services for the third it errors...

Upgrade Hyper-V Integrations Services
A previous installation of Hyper-V integration services has been detected (version 6.1.7601.17514).  Click Ok to upgrade this installation.

[I press OK]

During the process it makes it to: Installing Guest Components....then
An error has occured:  One of the update processes returned error code: 1783

Any ideas how to resolve?

Hello,

Is there something to remotely connect to the Hyper-V VM console remotely? Something like VNC with a specific password that a user can only connect to that VM?

Bad Performance in VHDX

Hello everybody,

i have a huge performance Problem with one of my VHDX Files mountet to a Windows Server 2012 Virtual Machine. We have a 4 Node (Server 2012) Hyper-V Failover Cluster with several VM's running. There are 3 Cluster Shared Volumes on a 2 Node LeftHand Storage Cluster.

One of my VM's is running as a Fileserver. And since a few Weeks, the Performance of the Fileservers Data Partition is terrible! When i try to copy a file from the Data Partition to one of my physical Hosts (eg. Backup Server) i got a Bandwidth of max. 10 MB/sec. Same precedure on another Partition of the File Server gives me about 60 MB/sec. Only the Data Partition-VHDX is painfully slow! I also mounted the Data Partition VHDX to another Server to exclude the Fileserver itself as the Problem. No Changes.

Other VHDX Files on the same CSV are running as they should. So i think the storage is not the problem. Are there any improvements within the VHDX i can do!?

Error (10698)
The virtual machine (x) could not be live migrated to the virtual machine host (y) using this cluster configuration.

Recommended Action
Check the cluster configuration and then try the operation again.

We got the above error on one of our server in our 4 node Hyper V 2012R2 Cluster after having the node down to do the latest MS updates Dec 2014.

The fix in the end was to on the node that we could not migrate to:

Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\GroupPolicy\Machine on the server in question
Delete the file “Registry.pol“ or rename it if you prefer (example Registry.renamed)

Then restart the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service (NOTE! THIS WILL RESTART ANY VM's ON THIS NODE) in our case the Node was Empty since it had just been down for maintenance.

A new Registry.pol file will be created

I found the fix here http://jack-brennan.com/hyper-v-live-migration-error-applying-changes/ but it took some searching, so wanted to re-post here the help out others with the same issue.

If anyone knows why this fixes the issue I would love to know!

Questions About Hyper-V Replica

Hi Members,

I want to deploy the magical and interesting feature of HYPER V Server is HYPER-V Replica before I deploying I have some question I my mind which is not cleared yet after several searches on internet.

My Scenario

I have three HYPER V host server on ISP sides which is running multiple VM (Different OS) my side and other two remote sites connected with ISP site with 6 MBPS link (Layer-2).Now we created One DR Site at my Office area. Now I want to enable replication for primary site VMs at my DR Site.

Here are my few Questions.

How Much Bandwidth required for replication operation logs (.hrl) ?

What happen if my DR site goes down due to power outage or link disability? Is logs replicate again when Dr Site Up or it creates Problem

Can I Up my VM from replicated site if primary site goes Up and is reverse operation possible DR to Primary Site.

I understand initial copy of virtual machine (Over Network) how to perform this but what are the steps to perform 1)send initial copy over network  2) use an existing virtual machine on the replica server as the initial copy.

2012 R2 Move Replicated VM to new storage - old location still has VHD?

$

I have this scenario:

Server 1 (Primary Hyper-V)
Drive 1 (Current VHD storage)
Drive 2 (New VHD storage)

Server 2 (Replica Hyper-V)

I am moving a couple of VM from drive 1 to 2 using live storage migration. These VM have active replication to Server 2. The move seemed to go fine and replication resumed properly once the move was finished. The strange thing is the primary VHD seem to still be on Drive 1. I thought that the final step of the live storage migration would be to delete the old VHD? Once I verify the VM are using Drive 2 I assume I can just delete the files on Drive 1 right?

Diskshadow fails in CSV volume

Hi,

I am trying to create a shadow of CSV volume alone using diskshadow and it works great. If I am adding two volume's and one of the volumes is CSV and another one is normal hard disk (NTFS) and in this case the disk create failed. Is this normal behavior some things I missed.

Please let me know if anyone knows a solution to this problem.

OS: Windows 2012 server

Thanks in Advance.

Weird VM move problem - HyperV 2012

$

Hi,

We’re currently running an evaluation of HyperV 3.0 (we’re a VMWare house currently) and we have two HyperV hosts, one in each of our data centres.

We’ve created a single VM on each host and are currently in the process of testing the VM move process.

On each host we have two Virtual switches. One of the virtual switches is configured for the local VLAN at each datacentre. The other virtual switch is a common “extended” VLAN which exists on both hosts.

With only the two “local” switches in place, we can move the VM from host to host without a problem. However, with the common VLAN switch in place on both hosts, we consistently get the following error:

This appears to not be a networking issue. When both VMs are configured on the “extended” VLAN, we can successfully ping the VMs across the link – but the move simply refuses to work.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what to try next?

 Cheers Steve

Pre-install HYPER-V VMs, then Move to Production Server - Questions

$

Hi All,

I am currently taking over IT Admin duties for a new client, and will be downscaling their bloated 20 server environment to a 5 server Hyper-V environment (about 4 VMs per server).  It will be a complicated, and rather time consuming/time sensitive process, given that as soon as I am handed the Admin passwords, I am expected to transition the entire network to a new DC server VM, a seperate Exchange VM, and seperate DirectAccess VM over a 3 day weekend.

I was thinking about getting started on this early, and was planning on setting up and configuring the DC and Exchange Server VMs on an old spare Dell server I have with my licensed copy of Server Standard 2012 R2 with Hyper V role enabled.  Then, when it comes time to transition them over the 3 day weekend, it would be a simple matter of copying the HYPER-V Folder (containing Virtual Hard Disks & Virtual Machines folders) from the spare Dell Server to a portable USB drive that will be brought to client's site.  Then at client's site, I would erase and install Server Standard 2012 R2 Hyper V on one of the client's 20 servers (probably the best of the bunch), and then copy the HYPER-V folder containing the DC & Exchange server from the portable USB drive to it.  Then I would simply import the DC and Exchange VMs via the Hyper V Manager.

My two questions are as follows:

1) Just to be sure, given the DC and Exchange VMs are virtualized, it will make no difference to transitioning from an old crappy Dell server to a rather new modern Dell server.  I know performance will be better on the new server, but there will be no complications with the VM migration (aside from allocating more Cores, Memory, & Virtual NIC)...yes?

2) The client's Windows Server licenses - client is currently under an Enterprise Subscription license with Microsoft (either Open Value or Open Business - dont know yet). For the time being (before the 3 day transition), can I get away with using a 180 day trial editions of Server Standard 2012 R2 and Exchange 2013 to setup and configure the VMs, and then activate the trial editions later using their existing Enterprise Keys?  Or will this not work because of some incompatible reason?  There are over 200 users and 300 email accounts, so I would really prefer to configure all this ahead of time if I can, but dont want to find out last minute or on day of migration that my Enterprise Key wont activate because I used the trial editions and I have to reinstall/reconfigure all over again.  Is this possible or is there another, better, recommended way?

Ultimately, I would like to get as much done ahead of time, so that then the major issues on migration day will be data migration (files, folders, and email) and the reinstallation of all 100 workstations (via Windows Deployment Services - yeeah baby!!!).

Does this sound possible?  Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to install SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition on a Windows Server 2012 Standard Which is installed on a Virtual Machine that is created by Hyper-V?

Hi

I have recently bought a Virtual Machine from a data center and installed a Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition on it. As I tried to install the SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition, the data center administrator denied me to do this telling me it is not possible to install any licensed Microsoft software on a Windows installed on virtual machine created by Hyper-V. It was really strange for me! I wanna know if this is true.

Thanks Everybody
