Hello,

i am having some hyper-v-machines where WOL is enabled in the bios.

With windows 8.x on this machine, wol is working well.

On the same machine with hyper-v 2012R2 CORE wol isn`t working.

How can enable wol (power management) on the specific nic within the hyper-v Core?

Thx

SCVMM 2012 SP1 Virtual Switch on Cluster Node Disappears

0

I have been running into an interesting but an alarming issue with virtual switches. I have recently built a 4 node Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. I have built numerous 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V clusters before, so I am pretty familiar with the process. I have rebuilt my VMM due to software problems, and on this new cluster, I have configured the virtual switches with nic teaming on 2 of the virtual switches.

I have 4 clusters being managed by this VMM.. and this newly built cluster keeps losing all of the VMM virtual switch configurations, meaning if I go to properties on the problem host and click on virtual switches, its blank. Refresh host cluster flags all virtual machines in this cluster as "Unsupported Configuration," making the vm unmanageable via VMM.

Information (26844)
Virtual switch (Virtual Switch Name) is not highly available because the switch is not available in host (One of the Hyper-V Hosts).

Recommended Action

All virtual servers on that host still has connectivity, as all virtual switch configs are normal when looking at it with Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Manager..

The workaround is to evacuate the host using Failover Cluster Manager and reboot the host. Then refresh the host. Then refresh the VM's. I cannot consider this a 'workaround' as I cannot be rebooting my hyper-V hosts every week.. and migrating virtual servers constantly just for this reason. (DPM backups have a FIT with csv's if it tries to backup a vm on a same csv as another vm thats being migrated.)

I have been wrestling with this problem for a few weeks now. The cluster has been slicked and completely rebuilt.. Still same problems. Has ANYONE else out there seen this issue? Does ANYONE out there suggest a way to go about further troubleshooting this issue?

HyperV 2012 network performance problem with Teaming 4x1Gbit.

Hello everyone,

2 VMs from the same host sending Iperf test to an external ressource (out of the External Vswitch), simultaneously, don't get more than 1 Gibt/s through the Team.

I've tried every kind of configuration (switch dependent/independent, VMS/no VMQ, RSS, SMB...) but I haven't test it from scratch (fresh 2012 install, HyperV role, no script, no VMM...).

Critical patches are applied, network card drivers (Intel) are up to date.

The host is configured with Vnics, there is only one Vswitch attached to the physical team.
The vlan are tagged on the Vnic of the VMs.

The access switches are stack of 2960 Cisco's, with scr-dts-ip as load-balancing algorithm.

Every TCP session should be multiplexed on the different physical adapters, am i right?

Thanks in advance for your participation :)

we are in process of creating HYPER-V 2012 r2 with 2 server initially.

HP ProLiant BL685c G7 (2 server )

Below are the NIC details, and we have IBM SAN storage,

Can someone provide or links some details, where I can create a NIC bonding

Can I bond all the 4 NIC and from there Can i create a VNIC, 1 for management, I for Vmotion, I for cluster and 1 for VM

Is that Correct my assumption is ?

USB Pass-Through From Windows 8.1 Host To Windows Server 2012 R2 VM

I want to be able to connect with a Windows Mobile Device through Windows Mobile Device Center, within a Virtual Machine.  When connecting through the Hyper-V Manager and through Remote Desktop, under "Other supported RemoteFX USB devices", I can see the Symbol USB Sync Cradle.  In the VM, in Device Manager, I don't see a USB connection.  In the VM, I don't see any meaningful errors in the Event Viewer.

Host:  Windows 8.1 Enterprise Hyper-V on a Domain.  Upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro.  When this computer was originally installed with Windows 8 Pro, Hyper-V was enabled.  I removed Hyper-V, and installed VMWare Player, because I wanted USB Pass-through.  I then uninstalled VMWare and installed VirtualBox.  Recently, I uninstalled VirtualBox, upgraded to Windows 8.1 Enterprise, and enabled Hyper-V.

Virtual Machine OS: Windows Server 2012 R2 on a Workgroup.  Started out with being a VMWare VM, using VMWare Player.  Moved to VirtualBox.  USB Pass-through was working in both those virtual environments.  Used Disk2VHD to convert the VM to a VHDX file.

On the Host:

  1. Windows Mobile Device Center is connected to a Motorola Windows Mobile Device (MC959X) sitting in a Symbol USB Cradle.  The OS on the scanner is Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 Classic CE OS 5.2.29217 (Build 29217.5.3.12.26).  Advanced Networking (USB to PC) is not enabled.
  2. Enabled RemoteFX.
  3. In the RDP file, and in the Registry, added the GUID's for:
  • WPD "{eec5ad98-8080-425f-922a-dabf3de3f69a}";
  • Windows Mobile "{6AC27878-A6FA-4155-BA85-F98F491D4F33}";
  • USB Device "{88BAE032-5A81-49f0-BC3D-A4FF138216D6}";
  • Windows CE USB Device "{25dbce51-6c8f-4a72-8a6d-b54c2b4fc835}";
  • GUID_DEVINTERFACE_USB_DEVICE "{A5DCBF10-6530-11D2-901F-00C04FB951ED}"

Ran "sfc /scannow"

All Microsoft Updates are current.

What am I missing?

[Error] Using Hyper-V Manager with an simple user

Hi Guys!

Im having some trouble to give permission to an non-administrator user to use theHyper-V Manager. I will explain my enviroment so you can have a better look to help me out to solve this.

Have one Windows Server 2008 R2 ENT SP1 with Hyper-V role installed, in a domain enviroment, and a few VMs created and working. If I connect to the server via RDP with an administrator I have no problem using Hyper-V Manager but if a connect with a non-administrative user I get the old "You do not have the required permission to complete this task. contact the administrator of the authorization policiy for the computer 'localhost'".

I create a Role Assignment with the Read Service Configurationoperation and assign it to the user. I also put this user into the Administrator Role Assignment to discard that I need an extra operation to user de Hyper-V Manager.

Im still getting the error, does anyone have a clue on what Im doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Virtual SpinRite machine(s)

I am trying to set up a computer to handle multiple VM's, each running SpinRite on a single drive attached to the mother board.

I have that part all working, in the sense that SpinRite starts up and detects the physical disk I've passed through to it from Server 2008 R2. The issue is that SpinRite believes the VM is reporting the disks size incorrectly so it won't run. Do VM's do things to the reporting of passed through disks that could account for this?

Secure Boot State On in Error?

I am running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials as a VM on Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (server core).  In checking MSINFO32 I see "Secure Boot State" is "On" for Essentials, but given my current configuration I believe this should be "Off?"

I setup a new Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (server core) using an Areca ARC-1224-8i RAID controller.  It was unclear to me whether or not the Areca RAID controller would support UEFI or not, but since Secure Boot was desirable I decided to try a UEFI installation. I created two volumes on the RAID controller.  C drive of 80 Gb and D drive of the remainder (about 9 Tb).  I checked the file C:\Windows\Panther\setupact.log and saw the message which told me this was an EFI installation/boot.

After Hyper-V was installed I then setup Essentials as a VM on the D drive.

When I ran MSINFO32 in both Hyper-V and Essentials and I saw the Secure Boot State was On which was expected (and desired) for both OS levels.

Several days later I started having problems.  The system seemed to have crashed and during multiple attempts to reboot the Hyper-V server couldn't seem to detect the RAID controller.  If I tried a new Hyper-V installation and loaded the RAID driver the RAID controller was seen, but when Hyper-V itself tried to boot it seemed as though the RAID driver was not being loaded and thus the RAID controller could not be found (and along with it my C boot drive was missing)?

Since I had some suspicion that the RAID controller might not support UEFI I decided to re-install Hyper-V, but this time using the Legacy BIOS.  After the installation was completed I again verified the setupact.log and saw BIOS rather than EFI (as expected).

I then re-attached my Essentials VM (which was left untouched on the D drive) and got everything running again.

But now when I check MSINFO32 within Hyper-V it showed Secure Boot State Off (expected given that UEFI was not used).  But when checking MSINFO32 within Essentials it showed Secure Boot State On.

I thought one purpose of Secure Boot was to create a chain of trust.  Given that Hyper-V can no longer verify this chain (since UEFI is not used) I would have expected any VM running above Hyper-V to be in the same state, i.e., Secure Boot State Off? When the underlying Hyper-V layer changed I would have expected that to change Essentials view of the world?  So it looks to me as though this is not being handled correctly?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

P.S.  In case this makes any difference I am using a motherboard with a TPM and both the C and D drives were encrypted with BitLocker.  The C drive used a TPM key and the D drive had a password and was setup to autounlock.

After I re-installed Hyper-V on the C drive I then manually entered the BitLocker password in order to access the Essentials VM on the D drive.

Hyper-V 2012: Replication fails to automatically resume after a server reboot

Hello,

I have a VM lab with Windows 2012 and Hyper-V. Overall it has been awesome, but I have one small glitch:

The VMs on server A replicate to server B. The new Hyper-V replication feature works perfectly, except for my one problem. When I shut down and then restart the servers, replication does not always automatically resume for all VMs. Some VMs will resume replication on their own and some will require a manual resume - and it seems to be random. I can always restart replication by right clicking and the hitting Replication --> Resume Replication, but I rather hoped that this would happen automatically, all of the time.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a cure?

Lab internal Network in HyperV and connecting to external network for updates

I have setup an 2008R2 hyperV server (has 1 NIC only). Static ip assigned 156.118.68.100 /24

Virtual machines : 2 DCs and 3 Win7 workstations.  All connected with each other to Internal Network in 192.168.10.x subnet.

I want to create another virtual switch that will connect to outside (internet) to download updates. I have not been able to successfully do that.

Can i find instructions from somewhere?

thanks,

I have a failover cluster connected to 2 physical nodes, running 5 virtual servers. I need to change the internal ip address range & would like to know the correct procedure to make these changes.I am assuming these to be the correct steps but would like clarification.

From one of the physical nodes open Failover Cluster Manager, connect to & shut down virtual servers.

Select the cluster & click Take the cluster resources offline, then click shutdown cluster.

Ensure the cluster has shutdown on both physical nodes.

Change the IP address on the two physical nodes, rebooting as required.

Open Failover Cluster Manager on one of the physical nodes select the cluster & click Restart the cluster on both physical nodes, connect to the cluster using cluadmin & change the ip address & bring the resource back online from on of the physical nodes.

Re-Start Virtual Server instances & change the IP Addresses, rebooting as required.

Thanks in advance.

I have already done a Remove/Add of HyperV and a Windows Update Search but still the same error. Can it be related to a VPN installation on the hos pc ?

I'm not a master of hardware and networks, just trying to setup a Hyper V virtual machine,

Hi,

We have three hyper-V Host Servers with failover cluster, having different VM machines.

On one hyper V host one machine restarted automatically I don’t know why other machines on same hyper v host remains online.

When I checked hyper V Cluster Events I got Error 1069 frequently on daily basis, I Google it but unfortunately did not find any concrete solution can some help how to resolve this issue

The effected machine is Linux based machine (name : erp)

Error:

Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine ERP' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role 'ERP' failed.

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

pls help

Moving VMs from Standalone Hyper-V to Hyper-v Failover Cluster

Hello All.................I need to move Virtual Machines from Standalone Hyper-V based on Windows Server 2012 R2 to a Hyper-V Failover Cluster based on Windows Server 2012 R2.

-  The VMs OS is Windows Server 2012 R2

-  Applications installed on VMs are SCCM, SCOM, SharePoint, etc.

1.  I am looking for a Checklist that I can run through and move them.  To make sure I do not miss out anything.

2.  Would a downtime be required in this scenario while the VM is being moved?

3.  What requires special attention in this scenario?

Guest VM Internet Access

Hi all,

I've been trying to search for a solution to enable Guest VM internet connectivity without using ICS(Internet Connection Sharing).

The target machines are W8/W8.1 workstations & this is not to do with any Server SKU.

I've been reading about enabling ICS in corp network & many have suggested that it's not a good idea.

Would really appreciate if someone can provide a lead to have this enabled on all workstations without using ICS feature.

many thanks.

Moving VMs From One Hyper-v 2012 R2 to Another Hyper-v 2012 R2

Hi everyone, was hoping for some help in something I am confused about

Currently I have SERVER1 running hyper-v 2012 R2

I want to move all my VMs (around 20)  to SERVER2 also running Hyper-v 2012 R2

But I am confused on the best way to do this

1) should I just click on "MOVE" on SERVER1 to move to SERVER2?

2) Should I do an export and then import

3) should I setup replication from Server1 to Server2 and then do a failover?

4) or should I shut the VM down, copy the VHDX file and then create a new VM and use that VHDX

I just want to be cautious and use the best method to ensure it goes smooth and not worry about any corruption. Can anyone offer some advice?

thanks

Reboot guest - receive new nic

(This isn't a citrix issue.. it's HyperV - I think - but Citrix background below just for info. The HyperV part seems to be killing me here. This incident relates to )

A slight problem has resurfaced during Citrix provisioned image update. The citrix side of is it kinda academic, the reason it's being a pain is in the image, the virtual machines have two NICs, one to boot off of (a legacy adapter), and one for citrix ICA traffic (synthetic).

This has always worked great, ICA is bound to the right one and job done. All the VMs boot off the same provisioned image and we're off to the races.

Today I updated the citrix image - when I boot *some* VMs, it decides the synthetic adapter has somehow changed, and installs a new one. Which ICA doesn't bind to as it's not there at boot time, instead it attempts to bind to the non-routable boot nic and of course clients then can't connect.

I'm at a total loss to explain how the guest has decided it has a new NIC in there. If I show hidden devices, I can see the old one of course, but the fact it's not there until the device has been installed is causing me a problem.

For fun, I booted the server I was using back on the old image, the one that had worked perfectly well - and it pulled a new NIC instance, just as the new image did. This leads me to suspect something is up with the host as of course the October image hasn't changed, but I can't figure out what. Making matters worse, there are 5 servers running on that host, all on the same image - and the one I rebooted is the one showing this behaviour. The others are fine. As these are provisioned images, they ALL boot off the same one, and any changes are discarded upon reboot.

Any ideas? Host is 2008R2 datacentre, guests are 2008R2x64 standard.

Thanks

AW

Bit of background - we've a Citrix XenApp 6 farm which provides desktops and apps to thin client devices. There's around a dozen physical hosts, running in the region of 45 VMs that the clients in turn to connect to. We've two base images (using Citrix provisioned image) that are updated monthly and all guests boot off one of those.

Hyper-V Dynamic memory, Driver Locked

Hello All,

I've been wondering about the following.

I have 2 Dell R910 (Windows Server 2008R2 SP1) machines as my Hyper-V host machines, with around 40-50 VMs running on it. For most of my servers I've enabled dynamic memory, but on some of these machines I've seen the following:

For some reason this machine running Remote Desktop Services (with Web Access) is using around 3.8GB of memory.

Processes list only a fraction of the actual Memory being used.

But RAMmap shows that 2.5GB is being used by Kernel Drivers. From what I've read this might be the balooning effect of the dynamic memory. However, the RAM usage was the same yesterday evening (12h before I took these screenshots), when no one was actually working on this server.

I've seen this happen on multiple of my guest machines, the machines are running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter Edition.

Can anyone explain to me why it is doing this?

Thank you.

Kind Regards,

Tom
