Secure Boot State On in Error?

$

I am running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials as a VM on Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (server core).  In checking MSINFO32 I see "Secure Boot State" is "On" for Essentials, but given my current configuration I believe this should be "Off?"

I setup a new Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (server core) using an Areca ARC-1224-8i RAID controller.  It was unclear to me whether or not the Areca RAID controller would support UEFI or not, but since Secure Boot was desirable I decided to try a UEFI installation. I created two volumes on the RAID controller.  C drive of 80 Gb and D drive of the remainder (about 9 Tb).  I checked the file C:\Windows\Panther\setupact.log and saw the message which told me this was an EFI installation/boot.

After Hyper-V was installed I then setup Essentials as a VM on the D drive.

When I ran MSINFO32 in both Hyper-V and Essentials and I saw the Secure Boot State was On which was expected (and desired) for both OS levels.

Several days later I started having problems.  The system seemed to have crashed and during multiple attempts to reboot the Hyper-V server couldn't seem to detect the RAID controller.  If I tried a new Hyper-V installation and loaded the RAID driver the RAID controller was seen, but when Hyper-V itself tried to boot it seemed as though the RAID driver was not being loaded and thus the RAID controller could not be found (and along with it my C boot drive was missing)?

Since I had some suspicion that the RAID controller might not support UEFI I decided to re-install Hyper-V, but this time using the Legacy BIOS.  After the installation was completed I again verified the setupact.log and saw BIOS rather than EFI (as expected).

I then re-attached my Essentials VM (which was left untouched on the D drive) and got everything running again.

But now when I check MSINFO32 within Hyper-V it showed Secure Boot State Off (expected given that UEFI was not used).  But when checking MSINFO32 within Essentials it showed Secure Boot State On.

I thought one purpose of Secure Boot was to create a chain of trust.  Given that Hyper-V can no longer verify this chain (since UEFI is not used) I would have expected any VM running above Hyper-V to be in the same state, i.e., Secure Boot State Off? When the underlying Hyper-V layer changed I would have expected that to change Essentials view of the world?  So it looks to me as though this is not being handled correctly?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

P.S.  In case this makes any difference I am using a motherboard with a TPM and both the C and D drives were encrypted with BitLocker.  The C drive used a TPM key and the D drive had a password and was setup to autounlock.

After I re-installed Hyper-V on the C drive I then manually entered the BitLocker password in order to access the Essentials VM on the D drive.

error 2606 unable to perform the job because one or more of the selected jobs are locked by another job

Sigh.  I'm stuck.  For seemingly no reason host refreshes started erroring out with the error in the title.  Everything is Windows 2012, using VMM 2012 SP1.  I've tried:

  • reboot host server
  • reboot vmm server
  • remove server via GUI (fails with same error)
  • remove server via powershell with -force (same error)
  • throwing coffee cup into wall
  • using foul language

How can I clean this up?

The error indicates that I should look for running or cancelled jobs and wait for them to complete.  There are no running jobs and the cancelled jobs are, well, cancelled, so they won't ever complete.

very poor disk performance within a VM

i have hyperv on windows server 2012 R2 running on a hp dl380 G8p with 2x 4core XeonE5-2620 smart array P420i with 1Gb BBWC and 80 GB of Server RAM

about 10 VMs running but some of them are extremely slow on the disk level.

in the VM the disk response times are from 1000 up to 7000 miliseconds while on the psycial level if i monitor the specific VHDX file it has 1 milisecond disk response time and 2-3 MB/s Total B/s counter.

The VM take ages to boot and responses very slowly to basic clicks. on the physical level all the counters seem to be very happy. CPU 3% MEMORY 80% Ethernet 20 Mbps. Disk response times 0-3 ms, disk queue 0,00-0,04. Nothing special really.

But within the VM (running MS Project 2013 which is bascially a sharepoint) i get crazy values for the disk performance. Other VMs at the same time do not seem to be in trouble. Only that one VM. CPU and RAM values are all fine

I have tried to use QOS for disks, dynamic memory or no dynamic memory (20 GB RAM), uninstalled antivirus but nothing is having a positive impact on the VM performance. The same behavior with the same VM was on the same physical server when there was windows 2008 R2 HyperV.

I start to think that i am experiencing some hyperV specific issue with that VM as this one http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2517329/en-us but as i am not on 2008 R2 anymore it does not apply.

CSV V/s Pass through disks with HV 2012 R2 failover cluster

Hi

We are using HV 2012 R2 failover cluster with CSV. We found some articles saying pass through disks outperforms CSV. Is this correct?

Hyper-V Replica - failover to DHCP

$

Hi.

I have a customer, who wants to use Hyper-V Replica to migrate machines from one datacenter to another.

In the proces og failing over, they want the servers to switch from the current static IP address to being DHCP enabled.

I am aware of the IP Failover feature, but it only allows to change from one static address to another.

Is it possible to (automatically) change the settings of the servers to DHCP during failover?

Thanks in advance.

Enhanced session connection to a VM-no audio recording

$

I have a set of VMs that I'd like to connect to with enhanced session and audio redirection, but for some reason audio recording has stopped working through the enhanced session connection.  The host is windows 8.1, and the guest is server 2012 R2, and I have the correct policies enabled on both host and guest.  I can connect the enhanced session with the "record from this computer" selected for audio capture, but on the guest I only have playback, not capture.

What's really strange is that if I connect a second virtual NIC to this VM with a public IP address, I can RDP directly into this machine (through a regular RDP session, not the hyperV enhanced session), and recording redirection works just fine.  So far I've tried:

  • rebooting host and guest
  • disabling and re-enabling audio redirection
  • removing the "remote audio" device in the guest's device manager

I've also tried USB redirection using a USB audio device, and this works through enhanced session, but I'd also like to be able to get an audio connection using just the default audio device.  Anyone have any ideas?

Booting from Hyper-V VHD

$

Hi everyone,

We have a SCDPM installation on the Hyper-V Gen1 VM (which is running Windows Server 2012 R2). My IT chef asks me to move it to physical server. I decided to install Wk2012R2 on the physical server, copy the VHD of existing DPM VM to the physical server and create a boot entry to boot from this VHD.

But HyperV and my phisycal server are two different hardware environments. I suppose that if I sipmly transfer VHD to server and add a boot entry for VHD, this will not work, because the drivers will not run or smth else with the hardware.

The question is: How should I prepare the virtual hard disk before transerring and booting from it?

Add of a Windows 8 VM on a server 2012 Hyper-V

$

Hello,

I have a server (dual CPU) 2012 Standard Hyper-V, running 2 VM server 2012.
Till there, no problem.

For a "technical" use (VoIP server), I want to install a Windows 8 VM on this hypervisor.

1) Is it allowed (by Microsoft licensing) to add one (or more) VM on this 2012 hypervisor ?

2) If yes, which type of Windows 8 license should I buy ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Is it possible to connect a Virtual Machine to a physical monitor?

Hi everyone....

I believe the answer is "NO", but I thought I would throw it out here...

My vision is to have a server with 10 virtual machines as well as 10 physical display adapters.  I would then like to connect each VM to a single display adapter, so the Guest O/S will treat it like it's own...

Has anyone seen something like this?

Thanks!

Wrong time on virtual machine

Hello,

I'm running Windows 2003 Standard virtual machines under a Windows 2008 Datacenter Hyper-V Server.  The system time of all of my virtual machines is 3 hours later than the time of my physical host.

When I try to change the time on my VMs, it resets itself back to the wrong time after a few seconds, and I get this message in the System log:

Event Type: Information

Event Source: W32Time

Event Category: None

Event ID: 35

Description:

The time service is now synchronizing the system time with the time source VM IC Time Synchronization Provider.

Any ideas on what might be causing this?

Thanks,

Stephen

How to reclaim hdd space after compacting VHD in hyper-v

$

I have a virtual machine installed on Windows Server 2008 using Hyper-V.  The VM is using Windows 7 as its OS.  I had originally set the size of the dynamic disk to 40 GB but soon learned that wasn't large enough and expanded it to 110 GB.

Now I an no longer running the VM and need to reclaim some of that space while keeping the VM intact.  I have run the compacting wizard, and it says the disk is now 24 GB with a maximum size of 110 GB.   Yet all of that space is still allocated for the VM's use.  How do I reclaim the empty space?

I have tried to go into the VM and shrink the current volume, but it says I don't have enough space to do so.

I appreciate any suggesions as I really need to reclaim some of that hdd space.

Thanks!

iscsi initiator in guest on physical cluster

I am having a difficult time with using iscsi on a guest machine and could use some help.

Physical Hosts (same config on each)

NIC 0-1 Teamed with 0-2

NIC 0-2 Teamed with 0-1

NIC 0-3 Management

NIC 0-4 iscsi fabric a

NIC 0-5 iscsi fabric b

NIC 0-6 Heartbeat/LM

Virtual switches

Virtual switch using multiplex driver for team (VLAN 100)

Virtual switch using NIC 0-4 (VLAN 200)

Everything is working perfectly except the virtual switch for iscsi. I configure it but when I do a trace route to the iscsi SAN it ends up being routed via the teamed switch which is a different VLAN. If I do a route print it does show the traffic should go out the NIC 0-4 virtual switch but simply does not. I also can't ping it from other devices on the VLAN 200.

The way I set it up was just create a virtual switch off of NIC 0-4, add a NIC to the VM with that vswitch and entered VLAN 200 for it.

Any ideas what else I can look at?

Moving VMs from Standalone Hyper-V to Hyper-v Failover Cluster

Hello All.................I need to move Virtual Machines from Standalone Hyper-V based on Windows Server 2012 R2 to a Hyper-V Failover Cluster based on Windows Server 2012 R2.

-  The VMs OS is Windows Server 2012 R2

-  Applications installed on VMs are SCCM, SCOM, SharePoint, etc.

1.  I am looking for a Checklist that I can run through and move them.  To make sure I do not miss out anything.

2.  Would a downtime be required in this scenario while the VM is being moved?

3.  What requires special attention in this scenario?

Good day.

We need to install new HP 3PAR storage for our Hyper-V clusters.

Do we really need to enable NPIV on our SAN switch ?

We have no blade servers.

Getting Windows Server 2008 to Create a Virtual Machine to Run Windows 8.1 Is Easy -- Not So Getting Windows Server 2012 To Do So

$

I spent an entire work day trying to configure HYPER-V on Windows 2012 R2 Server to run Windows 8.1 in a virtual operating system. Gave up entirely on Windows 2012 R2 Server since no matter how I changed the memory configuration, it insisted there was too little memory available to perform bootstrap and initialization of the Windows 2012 R2 Server / Windows 8.1 combination. In vivid contrast, getting Windows 8.1 installed and operational under HYPER-V running on Windows 2008 Server is a snap. No whining from HYPER-V about a purported lack of memory. The machine has 2GB of main memory and nothing much running on it besides HYPER-V.  This situation is, of course, all my fault.
