Hi there,

I can't stop the service of the VMs to my customers

Is there a way to migrate a VM running on HyperV2 to HyperV3 with live migration ?

If so, how to do this ?

Thank you

Hyper-V Networking with VLANs

Evening all,

I need to create a multiple exchange environment for my studies. When I say multiple I don’t mean a number of sites within an organization but a number of organizations that communicate via email over the internet.  I have 1 IP address and 3 physical machines.

I have an idea how to achieve this but there is one thing I am not sure of. The plan is to use one physical server as the ISP provider. Then using Hyper-V tools I would create a virtual switch, this switch would then have 2 VLANs running.

What I need to know is, Can I use the Routeing tools on windows server 2008 to route the two VLANS so they can communicate? Can windows server 2008 r2 perform this type of action?

Or, would I be best using the Server as a router, then using a physical switch to create the vlans. Point all vlans to the routeing protocol on the server?

So really I need to know if I can create virtual layer 3 switch on windows server 2008 r2?

Thanks in advance

VHD is corrupt or unreadable- no snapshots

I expanded the VHD but I did not have any snapshots of the VHD. The expansion went smoothly, the machine was working properly. Now all of a sudden the machine is saying that the VHD is corrupt or unreadable. I have tried to use the vhdtool.exe but I don't have any snapshots to repair it from. I have tried everything I believe, and rebuilding the VHD would be last case scenario.

unable to import from hyper v R2 to 2012

I have succesfully exported a virtual machine from a 2008R2 Hyper-V host and I want to import the VM to a 2012 hyper-v host but I get an error:

"Hyper-V did not find virtual machines to import from location blahblahblah"

Not sure why this occuring, I have tried the procedure with more than one VM. I have tried it with different R2 hosts and different 2012 hosts. I am not sure how to start trouble shooting this one.

Thanks,

Hyper-v Replica Networking

Hi,

I'm considering using Hyper-V replica for our remote sites to replicate back to our primary site.

One thing I cannot get my head around is the networking sides of things, what do Microsoft recommend when the VLAN is not stretched across pri and DR site?

If remote site A uses the subnet 10.1.10.0/24 and has a file server with this IP address 10.1.10.10
and
The DR site (HQ in my case) uses subnet 10.1.1.0/24 how can I make this file server (10.1.10.10) available again to the remote site when it's running in the DR site?

Is a stretched VLAN mandatory?

Alan

Hyper-V Networking Advice

Hello,

Looking for advice here.  I have a server that has 3 physical nics.  I want to use one for management, and the other 2 for hosting 4 vms.  The VMs all have to talk to the internet and the rest of the physical network.  By my understanding I would have to have 5 physical nics to make this work, am I correct in this?  If not, then I have to create two external networks and 4 internal networks, but how would I get the internals to communicate with the externals?  Reading through the best practices and Understanding Networking with Hyper-V has just boggled my mind even more.  Maybe I am missing something though that will key it in for my mind.

Hyper-v failed to import initial replica.

I'm trying to set up replication. I tried sending the initial file over the network & using offline media. It sends the file, gets to 100% and then says failed with the following error. I get the same error when I try to import initial replication file.

Both servers have full control of the file & folder.

Server 2012 w/ VDI Recommendations?

Greetings All

Let me preface this by saying that we are a small school and another person and myself learn all this stuff on the fly, so my knowledge is limited to what we have implemented. Also, if this is posted in the wrong area, I apologize since this is my first post in TechNet.

Does anyone have a solid hardware recommendations for a VDI server hosting approx 60 (at most) users at one time?

I can only find older posts, unrelated posts, or too general information.

Thanks In Advance

Virtual Servers / performance - 2008 R2

I'd like some opinions on running multiple virtual machines on a single host and how much performance can be affected.

Our servers run a single Xeon E3-1270 processor with 32GB memory. 4 Western Digital RE4 1TB drives are in RAID 10 on an Adaptec 6405 card with module for cache protection. There are two onboard NIC's, one dual-port NIC and one single-port NIC via PCI Express slots. I plan to team the onboard to access the host server. The dual-port NIC's I plan to team for the VM's, and the single port NIC I plan to connect to a different switch which connects our storage devices using iSCSI to seperate traffic.

The physical server OS will not run anything other than Hyper-V role. I plan on having 3 virtual machines on this server.

1 VM will run Active Directory and DNS (4GB memory allocated)

1 VM will run Sage accounting (16GB memory allocated)

1 VM will run Print and WSUS (4GB memory allocated)

That leaves 8GB memory for the host or if I need to spawn up another virtual machine.

On the other server, same specs.

1 VM will run AD/DNS replicated (4gb memory)

1 VM will run engineering software (database driven) (16gb memory)

1 VM will run Symantec Endpoint Protection and Ghost Server (4GB memory)

We have 38 users total. 12 of which use Sage concurrently throughout the day. We have 8 network printers.

Given the specs on the server, is there any bottlenecks you can think of that would hinder performance running 3 VMs on each host.

i have 2 windows 2008 R2 server 1 is a domain controller and another is a RDS server. Both are currently on VMWare 4.1 ad guest VM's.

I bought a server with windows 2012 and will be setting this up as Hyper-V and after that i want to move the 2 VM's from VMWare to Hyper-V.

is there any utility that i can use to do this? or should i use any other methods?

The DC only has file shares.

Hyper-V Replication move hrl file to another location

Hi,

We are using Hyper-V replication in our environment.

I was wondering if it is possible to separate the .hrl (Hyper-V Replication Log) to another location (other set of disks), than the vhdx?

Also, if you can tell me how we can achieve that, it will be great.

Thank you!

Windows 8 - Network Not Available

I've created a VM using Hyper-V on my Windows 8 Pro laptop. The VM launches and is fully functional except that Networking is not available.

When I select the settings for the VM and Network Adapter, the only option available in the Drop Down under the Virtual Switch is "Not Connected". Do I need to create some sort of virtual switch from my end? If so, how do I go about doing this?

Thanks a bunch.

Ubuntu 12.10 GPT partition >2TB not working

Hi!

Hyper-V on 2012.

I've got a Ubuntu, 12.10, server installation which i try to add some storage to. I've created 64GB harddrive (VHDX) as the 1st drive. And then a 2nd drive 4TB (VHDX). Thin.prov on both.

Creating and formating: Using gdisk, parted or gparted (livecd) on ubuntu I'm not able to partition, GPT, and initiate a filesystem on the the large VHDX.

Is there a problem with Hyper-V 2012 and drives (VHDX) >2TB when used by guests?

Edit: :) Typo in title... Ubunut...

Hyper-V replication

Hi,

I've enabled replication and all appears to work correctly.  So I have tried an unplanned failover and intiate it from the Replica Server.  This appears to be fine as well.

The issue that occurs is that it seems to break the DNS on the VM, which also happens to be a Domain Controller.  What happens is the Forwarder the ISP has provided can no longer be resolved; 8.8.8.8.  Root Hints resolve correctly but using either provided DNS addresses provided by our ISP 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 don't resolve.

Haven't ran into the issue until using the Failover for Hyper-V replication so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Single vCPU v dual for virtual desktops

We are trying to make decision re. the default virtual desktop configuration. According to available information, multiple virtual CPUs can actually decrease results of CPU-intensive stress tests. I don't know whether such tests accurately represent intensive use of VDI. There are scenarios where multiple vCPUs bring material benefits - like http://blogs.citrix.com/2011/10/23/will-2-vcpu-desktops-improve-your-uptime/.

I have been running virtualised environments for years and the first action that I take with underperforming virtual server is adding a vCPU. VDI vendors and consultants tend to recommend starting with one CPU and then scale if there's particular requirement or situation. But I don't like incident-based performance management. I'm interested in the forum's practical experiences please?

Hyper-V 2012 cannot start 200 virtual machines at once

0

I  don't know what to do and I am ready to throw in the towel with Hyper-V and Windows 2012.

I have server R910 with 512 GB of RAM, a raid 10 disk array, etc. There is no machine more powerful build by the big iron companies. it has 64 cores, etc.

I created 200 identical virtual machines with one master and 200 differencing disks. The master is 20 GB long and it resides on a Ram Disk, so reading is the fastest. Each VM needs 1 GB of RAM only. The machines are all of them Windows 7. If I select them all in the Hyper-V manager and right-click -> Start, only about 1/4 start. The rest stay like frozen in several stages, but they never finish booting. I guess it is the creation of the swap file, which is 16 GB, and I cannot disable it because no matter what I do, Windows will create a minimal (16GB) swap file anyway. I cannot even redirect this file an external SSD or some similar trick, because Hyper-V does not allow that, like its competitors. As a result of this nightmare, I need to start each virtual machine 90 seconds apart, and for 200 units I need (200 x90)/60= 5 hours in order to fully boot my server. This is a joke.

Does anybody has any idea how to solve this riddle?

Unable to do pretty much anything with VHD file.

Evening,

I hope someone can help me with this as I am about out of ideas. Basically I have a vhd that I want to copy/paste into a test enviroment, so I turn the machine off copy the vhd and it fails, I try and move it it fails etc..... all the vhds for this machine move, apart from the c:\ drive. I'll list the things i have tried so far below:

  1. Turn off machine, copy then paste into new directory while on the local machine = copies pretty much to the end then errors
  2. Turn off machine then reboot, copy then paste into new directory while on the local machine = copies pretty much to the end then errors
  3. Turn off machine, copy then paste into new directory on a remote machine = copies pretty much to the end then errors
  4. Turn off machine, copy then paste into new directory using a remote machine = copies pretty much to the end then errors
  5. Backup with backup exec then restore = backup fails, starts runs for a little while to about 28gb then fails "permission denied"

i tried all of these a number of times and same results each time.

The one time i restarted the machine it restarted to a blue screen about the SOFTWARE registry hive being broken. To resolve this i mounted the VHD on the host machine and tried to replace the C:\WINDOWS\System32\config registry files with the C:\WINDOWS\repair copies. When i tried to copy paste the system file as a backup it not only failed it killed the mount of totally and dropped the drive. It did this repeatedly everytime i tried. It did however let me rename the file and then paste the backup in, which fixed the server.

So right now i appear to be in a postion where I have a VHD I can do nothing with apart from run the machine on it as it appears to be locked in place.

I have checked all the VHD files permissions in comparison to one that does work and all appears to be identicle, I even looked at the hive permissions on the host and all appear correct there as well as all DIR permissions.

I am really lost for what I can even try now to correct this issue as it is a production server I currently dont appear to be able to backup let alone move for any reason.

The host is Server 2008 x64 and the VM is a old school 2003 R2 x64 Standard.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated, if anymore information is needed i will gladly supply it if at all possible.

Thanks,

Liam

Hyper-V 2012 host freezing hard

I have a test platform, which is based on a consumer mainboard and Intel Core i3 CPU. Changing it is not a choice.

This one worked wonderful with Server 2008 R2, including the Hyper-V role. Until I tried to install Server 2012 as upgrade. At first reboot during the installation the system stopped with the single window logo on screen - and only a rollback could bring the machine up again.

Ok, incompatibilities with old drivers or such I thought and performed a clean install. This went well. System was performing great and only waiting to get its jobs. But after adding the Hyper-V role the following reboot again ended in a frozen startup logo. Only safe mode is still working, but an attempt to remove the Hyper-V role from here failed (the wizard did not move on after unselecting the role).

So now I have a useless Server 2012 machine and the choice to go back to Windows Server 2008 R2 or find a way to get Server 2012 up and running again on the platform - with Hyper-V.

Any ideas what is causing the behavior and how to fix it?

Best greetings from Germany
Olaf

Will it be possible to resize a VHD/VHDX in Hyper-V 3 while the VM is online?
