SCVMM 2012 SP1 Virtual Switch on Cluster Node Disappears

0
0

I have been running into an interesting but an alarming issue with virtual switches. I have recently built a 4 node Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. I have built numerous 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V clusters before, so I am pretty familiar with the process. I have rebuilt my VMM due to software problems, and on this new cluster, I have configured the virtual switches with nic teaming on 2 of the virtual switches.

I have 4 clusters being managed by this VMM.. and this newly built cluster keeps losing all of the VMM virtual switch configurations, meaning if I go to properties on the problem host and click on virtual switches, its blank. Refresh host cluster flags all virtual machines in this cluster as "Unsupported Configuration," making the vm unmanageable via VMM.

Information (26844)
Virtual switch (Virtual Switch Name) is not highly available because the switch is not available in host (One of the Hyper-V Hosts).

Recommended Action

All virtual servers on that host still has connectivity, as all virtual switch configs are normal when looking at it with Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Manager..

The workaround is to evacuate the host using Failover Cluster Manager and reboot the host. Then refresh the host. Then refresh the VM's. I cannot consider this a 'workaround' as I cannot be rebooting my hyper-V hosts every week.. and migrating virtual servers constantly just for this reason. (DPM backups have a FIT with csv's if it tries to backup a vm on a same csv as another vm thats being migrated.)

I have been wrestling with this problem for a few weeks now. The cluster has been slicked and completely rebuilt.. Still same problems. Has ANYONE else out there seen this issue? Does ANYONE out there suggest a way to go about further troubleshooting this issue?

How to manage a Hyper-V 2012R2 Host from Windows 7?

AFAIK This is the official Hyper-V Manager for Windows 7: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7887 it explicitly lists Hyper-V versions up to 2008R2, there is no mention of 2012 or 2012R2, and from trying to connect to my new Hyper-V 2012R2 I can confirm that it doesn't want to work.

From reading the docs on Hyper-V 2012/2012R2 remote management I've come to the conclusion that its only possible with Windows 8+ or Server 2012+ , but it cannot be used to manage Hyper-V 2008/2008R2...

Someone please tell me that this is just one big mistake on my part and that the product owner for Hyper-V at Microsoft is not this stupid...

Hyper-v failover Failover makes all Host crash

Hi

i have set up failover cluster. i have 2 node.  Node1 and node2.

I have a test VM running on Node1. I tested failover, by running the "simualte failover". That did work. then i tested a unplaned scenario. I turned of the node1. i was expected that the VM was moved to Node2, taht didn happen. All the nodes loste connection and turn into restarting.

Also, The cluster is connected to FB. taht works fine. And i have set up som network in nic teaming. Lets say my ethernet switch goes down. ? and i losse my nic team(20 Gbs). isnt taht a scanrio to failover? and how do you configure that?

Hyper-V Manager - Unable to manage from virtual host adapter management os

Hi All,

So, my hyper-v servers are connected at the moment with one IP that is X.X.X.A and I configured a nic teaming to which the hyper-v host is connected and has the IP Y.Y.Y.A.

Now, on my windows 8.1 machine, i can perfectly connect with Hyper-V manager to X.X.X.A but unfortunately, when i try accessing it via Y.Y.Y.A, it says I do not have the right.

I have tried using hvremote to reconfigure the system but no luck. Also, when i try to use Y.Y.Y.A, MMC crashes 95% of the time, and the rest it just gives me the usual no permission error, contact the administrator of the remote machine.

Any idea ? (And no, I cannot keep the X.X.X.A IP as that ethernet card will be in the future included in the teaming and thus the hyper-v host will only have the Y.Y.Y.A ip)

Thanks

DPM2012 R2 protecting Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster VMs, some appear offline in DPM

Hello,

We have 2 separate Hyper-V 2012 R2 Clusters using iSCSI SAN CSVs as storage. For these I have set up 2 PSGs for VM backups using checkpoints (As new in DPM 2012R2/Hyper.V 2012 R2)

90% of the VM backups work in online mode but some shows as Offline when running the DPMGuide to add a VM to a PSG.The server OS versions differs between WS2003 R2 SP2/WS2008 SP2 / WS2008 R2 SP1 / WS 2012. Windows Server Backup is installed on all VMs and vssadmin list writers shows no errors. How can I elaborate and solve this issue?

Thx /Tony

Hi,

I have some vms which needs to be started in an order with some seconds delay. This can be done with vmware using vapp. Do we have similar feature in hyperv?

Slow Preformance on HyperV VM's with IIS. Not sure what to change.

Slow Preformance on HyperV VM's with IIS. Not sure what to change. Doesnt apear to be a Disc I/O issue. Seams to really on happen on VM's that are hosting a mostly static Intranet page. Also same thing happens on another VM that hosts an Apache site. both are not very large and VM's run on a Local storage space seperate from the OS and good I/O speed. Host Server gets good network speeds. I have the Host and the VM fully updated.

Host Server is Windows 2012 and Hosts are Windows 2008r2

I've gone thur the Hyper V Preformace Blogs and tried to apply all the hot fixes. but most I downloaded said it did not apply to our machine. So Not sure what the issue is.

Import Hyper-V from Server 2012 R2 to Server 2012 not possible?

I have succesfully created exports from my Hyper-V machines on a Server 2012 R2 machine. Now I would like to import them to a Server 2012 machine that is up and running and has to host the Hyper-V machines from now on. But..... the system cannot find any Hyper-V files that can be imported. Is this a version conflict or am i doing something wrong?

High i/o every hour during production time Hyper-v 2012 R2

Dear All,

Since a long time now we have a problem in our 2012 R2 cluster.
Every hour we have a freeze of the whole cluster (6 VLANS with different environments) for 8-10 minutes.
The time is every hour around the same time. The monitoring tells us there is a high i/o wait, but there is no load that does explain the i/o wait. After the 8-10 minutes the whole cluster works again. This behaviour does only happen during production time. At night when the clients are not working the behaviour is not there.

We updated all hardware and software with the latest versions. Also we increased the Queue depth and decreased  theTimeOutValue (/kb/2806730/) We had an improvement during a small period of time, after we did this maintenance.

But the problem came back. It does not matter what vlan or CSV, all the Cluster is impacted.

We are almost sure it has nothing to do with the storage or with the VM´s, but with something in between.
But for now we are running out of ideas. Anybody ?

Virtual server and Firewall

Hi all,

Sorry if this is a too basic question. I'm trying to understand how our system works as I'm not the one that set it up in the first place. The Firewall crashed today and needed rebooted. When connected to the the server it says "Kernel-Power" and ID 41 so to me it sounds like the server shut down unexpectedly but I'm not sure. When the Firewall was rebooted everything was working fine again. So I have several questions that I'm thinking of. How can I figure out what really happened? Did the server shut down or was it just the firewall? Is it possible that the server (or client computers) sent information through the firewall, the firewall's cache got fully loaded and couldn't give a response and because the server didn't get a response it rebooted and the firewall crashed? Sounds unlikely, doesn't it. I maybe should say that when the firewall was down, as I said, I could access the server through RDC but the firewall was completely inaccessible so I had to press the physical power button to restart the Firewall. And the last week the network overall has been going very slow (which I tried to resolve yesterday by rebooting the routers that we have and that seemed to work).

Thankful for any ideas!

Upgrading Server 2012 to Server 2012 R2; Host or VMs First; Does It Matter?

I have a Server 2012 Datacenter Machine that I want to upgrade to Server 2012 R2, however, it has Server 2012 guests on it that I want to upgrade to Server 2012 R2.  The upgrade of the guests is less invasive and possibly higher priority, but I will likely want to take advantage of the of the additional Hyper-V functionality in the 2012 R2 host on these guests eventually.  I know running Sever 2012 R2 guests on Server 2012 is supported, but in such a scenario, I am not sure whether additional steps would need to be performed on the guests after the host was upgraded in order to take advantage of new features such as hot-resize of SCSI VHDs.  Can anyone confirm whether or not there is are any potential problems or additional steps involved if the guests are Server 2012 R2 before the host is?

Preconfigure Failover-clustering in other domain

0

Hello,

i a few weeks i am doing a migration on a hyper-v-platform.

Until that moment, i want to preconfigure the new hardware including hyper-v as far as possbile.

For this... i need a domain for configuring Failover-clustering etc.

Is it possible/recommended to:

1)  add the hyper-v-hosts to a different domain

2) set-up failover-clustering etc. to test live-migration of Virtual machines

3) When this platform is physical added to the existing environment --> change domain-membership of hosts to other domain and change cluster-settings

Are these steps possible or will this be mess at the end?

Thx

Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 hangs

Hi!

I'm running Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 R2. In one beautiful day the server stopped responding partly. I mean all quest machines are still running and I can see event viewer and ping it, but server shares or remote desktop or Hyper-V manager are not accessible any more.

In system log I see following errors:

  • 10010 - The server {8BC3F05E-D86B-11D0-A075-00C04FB68820} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. - after every 30 seconds, in the end this is the only error!

  • 7011 - A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Winmgmt service. - everything starts with this error.

After I restart the server it works for some hours or maybe a day and the problems start again.

Any ideas what can be wrong or how to troubleshoot?

Thanks in advance!

Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Backup

0

I have searched the web and have not found a definitive answer about Windows Server 2012 R2, Hyper-V and Windows Server Backup. We will have a Hyper-V Host running Windows Server 2012 R2. All of the Hyper-V Guest Virtual Machines will be running Windows Server 2012 R2. We will have a Domain Controller, SQL Server 2012 and Exchange Server 2013 running as Virtual Machines. A second physical server will be our primary domain controller, also running Windows Server 2012 R2. Can Windows Server Backup, running on the Hyper-V host, perform an application-consistent backup of the Hyper-V guest domain controller, SQL Server and the Exchange Server? Also, The SQL Server Guest and Exchange Server Guest will have multiple VHDX drives that are on separate volumes on the Hyper-V host. Will the multiple vhdx drives on different volumes cause an issue? We are a small shop so will not be using any Hyper-V fail-over. Just Hyper-V guests running on drives that are on the physical Hyper-V host. Any clarification will be appreciated.

Hyper-V Windows 8: Error Applying Virtual Switch Properties Changes - Wireless network

I am experiencing an issue when I removed the Wireless device and then re-installed it on Hyper-V Windows 8.

The error states : "Failed while modifying virtual Ethernet Switch connection settings" followed by "Ethernet port {f...} bind failed unspecified error (0x80004005)"

Is anyone else experiencing this kind of issue?

All Different Subnet VM Communicate

0

Hi Hyper V Expert,

I have the VM Test environment using Hyper V. I am using Windows Server 2012 as the Hyper V Host. Within this Host, I have configured one VM as the AD with preinstalled Windows Server 2008 SP2. This AD is up and running properly. this VM is connected to a virtual switch called "Switch1". It is internal network, means that there is no connection to the external network. Now, I would like to do a test of intersite AD replication using my VM Test environment. in this case, I have created another virtual switch called "Switch2" and I have built another VM attached to "Switch2". how should I create the routing to allow both of the VM connected to different virtual switch to communicate with each other just like the VPN over WAN? However, need to ensure that the routing won't disturb or affect any routing in the external network. it must be within the VM test environment only.

Please advise.

Thanks.

Regards,

Henry

Hyper-V 2012R2 Manager doesn't work, but 5nine does!

Hey guys!

Got a very weird one for ya! So the details:

 - Server 2012R2 Hyper-V Core

 - Microsoft remote management document followed to enable remote access

 - John Howard's HVRemote config utility run several times

 - Manually opened ports, enable firewall rules, DCOM permissions, remote permissions, etc, etc

 - Installed COREFIG (for 2012, not 2008 version), open source Hyper-V management utility to verify all is enabled and working.

 - Changed RPC dynamic ports to 50000-50100 to no avail

What works:

 - Remote server management works (user, groups, event logs, disk management, etc)

 - Can RDP into host machine, no problem.

 - Can see file shares localy and over the web

 - Can use third party software (Corefig and 5nine Manager) to control machine

What doesn't work:

 - Hyper-V manager

However, install 5nine manager (free client) and have full admin control over host (create VM's, start/stop/pause, VLAN management, etc)

Even if I disable software and hardware firewall's, no change. The Hyper-V manager will not connect with error "RPC server unavailable"

What's even weirder, if I start the Hyper-V manager, I get the RPC error. If I then click the "refresh" button (on the right Actions panel) it then connects and shows me status, but I cannot change or interact with anything. It's almost like it's ignoring the RPC error and trying to connect anyway.

I have spent weeks on this and am no closer to a solution. If it wasn't for the 5Nine Hyper-V FREE client, I'd be seriously boned! :P

Any advice would be welcome, and thanks in advance.

Terrible Flickering/Delay While Playing Video in Hyper-V

Hello Community,

I have a Hyper-V server running on Windows 8.1. I have had it for a couple years now. There's been this problem that has been bugging me (I can't believe I waited this long to say anything!) and I wanted to see if someone can help me out with it.

Essentially, when I play video in a webpage in my Hyper-V instance (also Windows 8.1, this one has Update), I experience tremendous lag and flickering when I scroll the page or Alt-Tab away from it. It's pretty terrible. Not just that, but the sound gets out of sync with the video and it just is not very pleasant. In fact, I feel the browser/instance is going to crash at any moment, heh. When I alt-tab, it will take up to 10 seconds at times before the video rendering window will refresh/clear.

Anyways, I wanted to get this out there to so see if anyone can assist. I am running GTX660, driver version 344.48.

Thank you,
Michael
