Is there a license cost to implement Cisco Nexus 1000V for Hyper-V

0

Still trying to wrap my head around the networking options for 2012 R2 Hyper-V. We've implemented the 1000V for our VMware environment (I'm not the VMware weenie) and we're testing Hyper-V. I'm not certain whether we'll use the integrated switch or the 1000V but I'm sure if there's a cost involved that will become part of the equation. Anybody been down this path and got any licensing info to share?

Hyper-V not getting IP Address for PXE Booting

Hi All,

I'm trying to get a Windows installation happening within a Hyper-V machine from a WDS Server in a VM.

It's a bit of a confusing set up. I have my laptop which is running 2 VMs - One is Windows Server 2008 R2 (AD / DHCP / DNS), the second is Windows Server 2008 R2 running Windows Deployment Services.

I then having a physical machine which is running Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V installed. They're all connected and communicating fine. They can all ping each other with no issues. Both the physical server and the WDS server are authenticated on the domain and logged in.

I have a physical NIC on the physical server that is connecting to my laptop via network cabling - which is how they all communicate.

Whenever I start up my Hyper-V machine to get it to retrieve an installation via the WDS server, nothing happens. The DHCP just times out. I've tried everything I can think of. The physical NIC in the physical server is a TP-Link TG-3468.

The NIC on the laptop is a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller - RTL8167.

Why can't the Hyper-V pick up an IP address for PXE booting?

Thanks in advance!

HyperV Manager cannot connect to local server

Hi,

My HyperV server (GUI) host has 3 virtual machines guests - all  of them are critical servers, suddenly the host is unable to connect to local server and thus I am unable to manage 3 virtual machines, however all 3 guests are online are accessible.

I have checked the VMM service and is running fine, i am receiving same error when logged in as a local admin instead of domain admin. Now one of the virtual machines is having problem and I am unable to manage i cannot connect to HyperV from remote system as well. When i logged on to the Server Manager, the automatic refresh is failing as per below,

Manageability from Server Manager is showing following error, Online - Data retrieval failures occured.

Moreover when i click add remove features I receive following error, Server Manager is collecting inventory data. The wizard will be available after data collection finishes. I have not shut down the guests and restarted the host, i fear i might not be able to connect to them as they are critical.

Please note that the host is not in any type of high availability yet, any help on this would really be appreciated, thanks.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Linux Guest VLAN Settings lost after reboot

Hi Guys,

last night a have seen a strange behavior with a Sophos UTM 9.204020 Linux Guest VM. (This VM is based on SUSE SLES v11? i think)

So i have Setup this in my home lab and experienced the same problem.

----Setup-----

2 External VM Switches

Management OS is on VLAN 4093 with IP 192.168.20.1

The guest network adapter is in Trunk Mode, VLAN Tag (4093) is set in the guest OS with IP 192.168.20.100

Everything works until you kick off a reboot from the guest or hyper-v console, after the reboot you loose the connectivity on the network adapter with the vlan trunk.

If you shutdown the guest and start it everthing works again - this happens only on reboot!!

I have tried diffrent things (static mac, enable disable hardware features (vmq/offloading etc) on the vm network adapter but always the same error.

After some search on the net i have found this article: Link

This guy has the same problem with another linux vm (based on debian) his workaround was to trigger a powershell script with the eventlog after reboot of the vm, this works for me too but this must be bug?

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Storage migration for virtual machine fails with general access denied error

Hello guys.

I am trying to move a VM from a hyper-v 2012 R2 Failover cluster to a non clustered host (2012).

Let's say that the VM i need to move outside the cluster is called VM1. VM1's VHDX is on cluster's CSV. VM1 resides on node HV05

Cluster is called cluster01.

The host outside the cluster (but in the same domain) is HV25.

I've created a share folder on HV25 called SharedFolder (\\HV25\SharedFolder). I've shared this folder with domain admin user.

In ADUC i've created constrain delegation using Kerberos for cifs service on bothe Cluster01 and hv25

I tried to move VM1's storage to the shared folder from HV25.

The error i get is: Migration did not succeed. Failed to copy file c:\ClusterStorage\Volume2\VMs\VM1\vm1.vhdx to \\hv25\vm1\vm1.vhdx: General access devnied error (0x80070005).

In cluster's machine event viewer i get: Storage migration for virtual machine 'VM1' (D13DAEC6-F811-427D-8A06-8F960B3F3B3F) failed with error 'General access denied error' (0x80070005). EventID 20820.

Can anyone help me understand what am I missing, please?

Thank you very much.

AD and 2 node Hyper-V

Hi,

planning to have 2 node Win 2012R2 hyper-v cluster but i have question about AD. I would like avoid to have DC as a VM on the cluster so instead can i just install AD on both hyper-v nodes so they are both domain controllers?

Thanks!

Dynamic VHD size increases drasticakky after modifying BlockSize to 256 MB from Default 32 MB.

Installing Windows 2012 R2 under Hyper-V virtual machines, the disk size in the end is around 9 GB but in case the BlockSize is set to :268435456. It goes above 11 GB.

Then doing the same operations on a differencing disk the size goes to 4 GB in case the block size is 2 MB but 14 GB when the BlockSize is 256 MB.

Any ideas why?

R Project for Statistical Computing application (http://www.r-project.org/) - Performance issues on Windows VM

0
0

We have recently moved from using R Project for Statistical Computing application (http://www.r-project.org/) on physical workstations to being hosted in a VM ( ESXi cluster). The R benchmark models when run in the virtual machines are 40 - 200% slower (several minutes) than on the physical workstations or laptops. Even though the VMs have been given more and more performant resources in the virtualised environment.

As far as we can see the VMs and workstations are configured as identically as possible, from a OS and application point of view.

From the Windows and ESXi performance counters we have analysed we cannot see any obvious performance bottleneck in the virtual environment.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue when virtualising R on Windows?  If so I can provide more information on the exact troubleshooting steps we have taken so far.

Appreciate we are not running in a Hyper-V environment, but I could not find a general performance forum and wanted to see if anyone has had a similar issue.

Regards,

Gareth

USB passthrogh

Hello!

There's a guest VM (Windows Server 2012 R2, Generation2) on a Windows Server 2012 R2 host.

I plug a usb device to the host and try to install a program from this device inside a VM (usb passthrough is working as expected), but the installation fails:

The same program (and all other programs) can be installed perfect when using an "ordinary" RDP sessions (not the usb-passthrough in Hyper-V), so is it by desing that RDP Connection in Hyper-V differs from the "ordinary" RDP connection?

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Very slow network performance with Intel NIC when TCP Large Send Offload is enabled

0

I have a Windows 2008 server with two NIC's (Intel PRO/1000 PL and Intel PRO/1000 PM), and one virtual external switch connected to each NIC.

With the 01/14/08 network driver, I get very low throughput on both NIC's (~10KB/sec when downloading from my server when it should be around 11MB/sec).

I've found that disabling "TCP Large Send Offload (IPv4)" on the virtual switch and "Large Send Offload v2 (IPv4)" on the physical adapters solves the problem.

Is this a bug in the driver?

Thank you,

Server 2012 R2 Data Center with Windows 8.1 client - Internet issues

0
0

First, sorry for the pictures, it helps me explain things a bit better

I am working on installing windows 8.1 onto a 2012 R2 server

Server has 2 NIC's. One for the server and one for the VM's
Here is the Server info

Here is my issue

I have a windows 7 client - Has Internet access
I have a Windows Server 2003 client - Has internet access

I build out a Windows 8.1 machine using Generation 1 and the machine is so unstable it will not install

I build out a Windows 8.1 machine using Generation 2 and the machine is good and stable.

The only problem is that it has no internet

It does get an IP address from the DHCP server ( also the host )

The DHCP server did issue 192.168.10.126, i just forgot to refresh the screen before I took the scrape

I did disable the IPV6 and that did not work

If I check Allow Management Operating system on the virtual switch manager I can no longer access the server via the network (RDP or File share).

Any suggestions on how I can get the Windows 8.1 client to see the internet?

TIA

Hyper-v 2012 R2 cluster over SMB 3.0

hello,

i have a setup with 3 servers: 2 for hyper-v 2012 R2 cluster and 1 with Windows 2012 R2 serving as a storage server. Each server has a single NIC 10gb NIC. the hyper-v servers have 128 Gb of RAM and single Xeon E5-2650 v2 processor. The storage server has :

- Single Intel Xeon E5-2620 v2

- 48 GB of RAM

- 12 x 4 To SAS2 disks

- no hardware raid

I setup my storage server using storage spaces

- 1 storage pool

- 1 Virtual Disk of 4 To with parity and thin provisionning

I am using file shares as storage for the hyper-v's.

I have deployed 10 VMs (DC, Exchange, sql, remote desktop, 3 linux servers ...)

However i am experiencing really poor disk performance, specially when copying files (i did not go with a proper IO testing tool). If a copy an ISO of 4 GB Inside a VM from one location to another i get an average speed of 20 MB/s.

Unfortunatly i can't add any NIC to my servers.

If i shut down all my VM's except one and do the copy test i get 130MB/s.

Any idea about what i am doing wrong ?

Thx in advance.

Hyper-V 2012R2 Manager doesn't work, but 5nine does!

Hey guys!

Got a very weird one for ya! So the details:

 - Server 2012R2 Hyper-V Core

 - Microsoft remote management document followed to enable remote access

 - John Howard's HVRemote config utility run several times

 - Manually opened ports, enable firewall rules, DCOM permissions, remote permissions, etc, etc

 - Installed COREFIG (for 2012, not 2008 version), open source Hyper-V management utility to verify all is enabled and working.

 - Changed RPC dynamic ports to 50000-50100 to no avail

What works:

 - Remote server management works (user, groups, event logs, disk management, etc)

 - Can RDP into host machine, no problem.

 - Can see file shares localy and over the web

 - Can use third party software (Corefig and 5nine Manager) to control machine

What doesn't work:

 - Hyper-V manager

However, install 5nine manager (free client) and have full admin control over host (create VM's, start/stop/pause, VLAN management, etc)

Even if I disable software and hardware firewall's, no change. The Hyper-V manager will not connect with error "RPC server unavailable"

What's even weirder, if I start the Hyper-V manager, I get the RPC error. If I then click the "refresh" button (on the right Actions panel) it then connects and shows me status, but I cannot change or interact with anything. It's almost like it's ignoring the RPC error and trying to connect anyway.

I have spent weeks on this and am no closer to a solution. If it wasn't for the 5Nine Hyper-V FREE client, I'd be seriously boned! :P

Any advice would be welcome, and thanks in advance.

All Different Subnet VM Communicate

Hi Hyper V Expert,

I have the VM Test environment using Hyper V. I am using Windows Server 2012 as the Hyper V Host. Within this Host, I have configured one VM as the AD with preinstalled Windows Server 2008 SP2. This AD is up and running properly. this VM is connected to a virtual switch called "Switch1". It is internal network, means that there is no connection to the external network. Now, I would like to do a test of intersite AD replication using my VM Test environment. in this case, I have created another virtual switch called "Switch2" and I have built another VM attached to "Switch2". how should I create the routing to allow both of the VM connected to different virtual switch to communicate with each other just like the VPN over WAN? However, need to ensure that the routing won't disturb or affect any routing in the external network. it must be within the VM test environment only.

Please advise.

Thanks.

Henry

How we configure Point to Site VPn for two different Virtual Networks (Vnet1 and Vnet2)

0

HI

Can you please help me out here this below scenario

Scenario :

I have created two Point to site VPN’s and appended Vnet1 and Vnet 2 to VPN-1 ,Vnet2  & Vnet3 to VPN2.  (note : Vnet1 and Vnet2 are Site to Site connected ).

Now I am facing a challenge if anyone connected through VPN-1 should SSH the VM’s (which are located under Vnet1 and Vnet2 Virtual Networks)  but here we cannot SSH the VM which is located under Vnet2 , only we can SSH to Vm’s under Vnet1 only .

We can able to SSH the VM under Vnet2  from Vnet1 VM ,  Since Vnet1-Vnet2 are Connected . The same problem we seeing in VPN-2  as well .

If this is the case then we need three Point to site VPN’s Instead of Two Vpn’s right  ? , Please suggest me what is the best solution here or correct me if I did any mistake in configurations.

Thanks

Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Backup

0

I have searched the web and have not found a definitive answer about Windows Server 2012 R2, Hyper-V and Windows Server Backup. We will have a Hyper-V Host running Windows Server 2012 R2. All of the Hyper-V Guest Virtual Machines will be running Windows Server 2012 R2. We will have a Domain Controller, SQL Server 2012 and Exchange Server 2013 running as Virtual Machines. A second physical server will be our primary domain controller, also running Windows Server 2012 R2. Can Windows Server Backup, running on the Hyper-V host, perform an application-consistent backup of the Hyper-V guest domain controller, SQL Server and the Exchange Server? Also, The SQL Server Guest and Exchange Server Guest will have multiple VHDX drives that are on separate volumes on the Hyper-V host. Will the multiple vhdx drives on different volumes cause an issue? We are a small shop so will not be using any Hyper-V fail-over. Just Hyper-V guests running on drives that are on the physical Hyper-V host. Any clarification will be appreciated.

Create VM from hyper-v directory and files?

0
0
We had some hardware problems that caused our hyper-v server to fail, and when it came back up one of the virtual machines was missing, i.e. it did not show up in the Hyper-V Manager. However the directory containing the VHD, xml file, and all the other hyper-v definition files is still there. Is there any way to recreate the VM using that directory? I know I could create a new VM just using the VHD, but this particular VM is tied in to the specific Ethernet adapters, so I would prefer to use the existing definitions in the directory.
