OL6.3 on HyperV

Hello Dear Fellows,

I have IBM x3650 M3 Dual Processor x6 core each, with 32GB RAM and RAID 5 on SAS drives.

Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise HyperV installed on it, virtual machine has been created on it for Oracle Linux 6.3 installation with following VM specifications:

1 single core Virtual Processor
4GB virtual RAM
100GB virtual IDE - fixed size
Legacy Virtual NIC

Linux Integration Services 3.4 installed and all patches applied.

Oracle 11g R2 has been installed on this Oracle Linux 6.3 machine.

Everything is working very fine, but when I try to restore database to it, it takes considerably long time to restore. Oracle Enterprise Manager shows high disk IO.

I suspect it to Hads disk taking time for IO operations.

Kindly advise if I am missing something? I have tried it on multiple machines but response is same.

Same configuration on Vmware is working like a charm.

Please suggest how to fix problem with HyperV.

Thanks,

Athar

Real World Network has trouble after HyperV setup

I am running Windows 8, and have installed Hyper-V.  In Hyper-V I have connected the Virtual to an external network.   When I do a clean start my real world can go online, and the Virtual World can go online.  Every so often the real world fails to get a real IP address, but the Virtual World can go online.

What could be causing this and how can I correct this?

Disable write cache on VHDX in Hyper-V DC guests.

I have a couple of DC's running Server 2012 as Hyper-V guest machines.  I have write caching disabled on the hosts RAID controller (no cache battery), but for some reason, I can't disable write caching on the VHDX virtual drives that the DC guest servers reside on.  This has caused me issues twice during extended overnight power outages that have caused unclean shutdowns of the physical server, corrupting AD databases on the guest servers.  I just spent four hours force-removing AD from one of the servers, rejoining, and fixing all the other associated issues due to corrupted AD databases.

How the heck do you disable write caching on the boot drive on a Hyper-V guest when the guest OS says the device does not allow the setting to be changed?  Oh, the VHDX is mounted as an ATA device.  Do I need to create a tiny VHDX to mount as an ATA device as a boot volume, and then install the OS on a SCSI mounted VHDX, or how else can I fix this problem?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If possible: how to mount NFS share to a HyperV 2012 host??

Hey Guys,

Im not even sure if this is possible, but I've been searching and cannot find an answer.

I have a Linux backup server that is hosting an NFS shared drive.  I can connect to it great with VMware and my vm's can see the drive fine.

How do you mount an NFS share to a HyperV host?

Thanks

Hyper-V guest system caused NIC connectivity issue

I am doing a forensics investigation into an error that occurred on our Host Hyper-V Server.

A Domain Controller running W2K8 w/ SP and using Hyper-V lost its network connectivity so that I could not access the DC via RDP (network connectivity was lost). The only method of gaining access to the DC was via KVM attached to the box.

This seemed to occur because of the virtual NIC used by Hyper-V Network Manager.  When I removed the Network Manager for the Hyper-V server, connectivity was restored (after a DNS refresh).

Before I build a new Net Mgr and deploy it on the DC (Host server), I'd like to understand what happened so as to prevent this issue from occurring again.  Any ideas?

Thanks, Jesse

Where to Keep HA VHDs?

I am currently running Hyper-V on 2 identical hosts. I would like to set them up so that if a VM or Host fails then it would automatically start on the other available host.  I had a question on where to store the VHDs for the VMs and how to access them.

They are currently on a LUN which I have mapped via iSCSI to "D" on Host1.  Would I be better off converting it to a CSV and storing/sharing the VHD files from there?

SR-IOV on Intel S1200 BTLR Xeon E3-1220Lv2

I have installed Windows 2012 Hyper-V Server. The guest VM consists of a couple W2012 Servers simulating a Domain. The hardware is a Intel Intel S1200BTLR board (BIOS is up to date), a Xeon E3 1220Lv2 and a Intel I350 dualport NIC. The I350 support SR-IOV as well as the current driver (V. 17.4) does. The virtual switch is configured to support SR-IOV as well as the NIC in the VMs. However Network Status always shows:

Degraded (SR-IOV not operational)

VMQs are working. The command "(Get-VMHost).IovSupportReasons gives:

SR-IOV cannot be sued on this system as the PCI Express hardware does not support Access Control Services (ACS) at any root port. Contact your vendor for further information.

I really would like to get SR-IOV up and running. Does anybody know if the reason given is the "true" reason? Do I have to configure something (VT-x and VT-d is enabled)?

I also would like to know if someone has gotten SR-IOV successfull running on stock hardware (like different Intel Server Board, for example one for the E5 processors with integrated i350 NIC).

I tried Intels Website to find some more informations regarding "this product is supported" or "this product will be support with the next driver version. But all it gives is some general information about SR-IOV and whitepapers.

Install Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012

Hello all,

I install the Hyper-V role on Windows Server 2012 .

On reboot, the system remains stuck on the windows logo and therefore unable to start correctly. With the safe mode I see that Hyper-V is installed with no error.

I don't understand :-(
In your opinion, what about this situation?

Thanks for your help.

Regards.

Just finished a NEW build of (1) SBS2003R2, (2) Webserver & (3)PABX

Box HPDL 380 G5 6GB ram, raid1 37GB, raid 5 350GB
Server 2008 WVS Enterprise
Virtual
SBS2003R2 x86
Server2008Web x64 (WEB)
Server2008Web x64 (PABX)

This has been up for 8 days, I am testing continuosly, NO hickups,
install of SBS very fast, and after installing VM tools, extremly fast
and responsive. BUT

I need one Com port for my fax modem on the SBS server.

So I set the com port on the VM to \\.\pipe\com1

Now I have to do the corresponding on the Host server.

I tried to use WINdbg with the code of windbg -b -k comStick out tongueipe,port=\\.\pipe\com_1,resets=0 ,

I did not work, which I expected, the problems is I can't find any relevant documentation on how to do this.

It would be extremly helpful if we would have a driver from MS for this, or is there one?

Many thanks

How can I convert a VMWARE vm to Win8 Client Hyper-V without any access to Windows Server 2008 R2 or System Center?

$

There is a tool last updated in 2011 that claims to work with Windows Server 2008 R2, that will convert a VMWare VM to Hyper-V.  If I had a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine with Hyper-V on it, I suppose I could use that.

I'm a home user with Windows 8 Pro (64 bit) and I'm using Client Hyper-V very well, but I have some VMWare machines I'd love to convert. I can't even run VMWare on Win 8 very well, because the hypervisor in Hyper-V is detected by the VMWare workstation and VMWare player installers. There are some boot.ini hacks that claim to disable HyperV Hypervisor at boot time, which allow you to install VMWare Player or Workstation and then reboot and start/stop some services to toggle between the two. This is not a very nice solution either.

Other than getting a Win2008R2 Machine set up just for the conversion, or setting up System Center just for one conversion (both of which seem absurd to me) is there any way anyone can see to do this JUST on my Win8 machine at home?  I am aware that there are tools built into the giant monster that is System Center 2012, and I am aware that there are third-party tools that will work on Windows 2008 R2 with its Hyper-V, but I haven't found any way on Win8Pro itself, with anything that will run on Win8Pro.

Learning about virtualisation - newbie!

My setup. PC running Oracle's Virtualbox which has Microsoft Server 2008 Installed. Hyper-V Manager is installed on my PC, which runs Windows 7 Ultimate.

Followed the following:

The Virtual Machine Connection tool is installed by default with the installation of the Hyper-V role on a full installation of Windows Server 2008 (the connection tool is not installed on core installations).

To install Hyper-V Manager on a Windows Server 2008 system which does not have the Hyper-V server role installed (in other words a system which is to act as a remote client), perform the following steps:

1. Start Server Manager

2. Select Features from the left hand panel

3. Click on the Add Features link in the main panel to invoke the Add Features Wizard

4. Locate the Remote Administration Tools category in the list of features and click on the + to unfold the sub-categories.

5. Click on the + next to Role Administration Tools to unfold the list of features in that category.

6. Select Hyper-V Tools.

7. Click on Install to install the feature.

=============================

Hyper-v tools is shown as installed.

Hyper-v manager gives the following connection error:

An error occurred while attempting to connect to <server name>. Check that the virtual machine management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server.

Where am I going wrong?

Hyper V settings for VM Domain controllers

Hi there
Just checking some details.
I have an SBS 2011 machine running as a VM on a HyperV 2008 R2 machine.

Under settings for the SBS VM, I have the following ticked by default.

Are these correct? For Time Synchronisation as I am seeing posts declaring that this should be unchecked for domain controllers.

Many Thanks

Hyper-V Server 2012 with Zambezi AMD FX-Series - Hardware assisted virtualization not present

$

Hi, I'm trying to set up VDI across Windows Server 2012 VMs running on Hyper-V 2012.

The wizard's compatibility check for the Virtualization Hostserver failed with "Hardware-assisted virtualization is not present on the server".

I'm running an FX-8120 CPU and have the ASUS M5A97 motherboard.

I know I'm supposed to enable No-Execute (Hyper-V Hardware Considerations) but Icannotfind that or any other synonyms of it in my motherboards UEFI BIOS (NX, XD, EVP, XN... nothing).

I found this:

PAE/NX/SSE2 Support Requirement Guide for Windows 8

which in short says "Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 requires that systems must have processors that support NX, and NX must be turned on for important security safeguards to function effectively and avoid potential security vulnerabilities."

this leads me to believe NX is on by default if I was able to get this far and install Hyper-V 2012 and Windows Server 2012..

Also I tried to disable AVX in cmd with "bcdedit /set xsavedisable 1". Did not resolve

My processor is Zambezi FX-8120 and also supports RVI/SLAT:
processor: Newegg Processor FX-8120
support proof: AMD Processors with Rapid Virtualization Indexing Required to Run Hyper-V in Windows® 8

What going on here? I bought this CPU specifically after I had the same problems with an older AMD Athelon II and made sure to buy one with AMD-V and RVI.
I'm aware my MB is not a server motherboard, but I was trying to spend as little as possible to retrofit my home rig into a lab deployment. I've read a VMWare thread where someone successfully set up nested virtualization using ESXi5 with an FX-8120 and a cheap $65 Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 ... Hyper-V has been a pain the whole way through from setting up remote management and now this.

If someone suspects it's my MB can you also make a suggestion as to what features I should be looking for in a new one? NX, IOMMU, some other virtualization feature?
If you've had  similar set up, perhaps recommend an MB? Not looking to spend that much $150 max.

Thank you

Hyper-V replica over dedicated network

$

Hi,

I just setup a couple of Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V boxes and enabled the replica of a VM. All seems to work fine. These 2 boxes are connected to corporate LAN through a NIC and each other through a crossover cable over another NIC. As I can see, the replica trafic flows through corporate LAN. I'm trying to move it over the crossover lan, to save corporate bandwith for VMs, but I can't figure out how. I tryed to setup the replica using the IP address of the "crossed lan", but in this case the replica setup fails with a kerberos error (maybe because that lan is detected as public and not as a domain one). I've not tryed with certificate authentication, but this seems to me quite cumbersome considering that both servers are members of the same domain (Kerberos seems the smarter choice).

Has anyone ever tryed this kind of configuration ? What's the best thing to do ?

Thanks a lot.

Windows Server 2012 - Can occasionally not access second virtual hard drive inside a VM

$

I run Windows Server 2012 RTM Hyper-V and I can occasionally not access the second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) attached to the VM through the virtual SCSI controller. I can however access the first hard drive that is connected with the virtual IDE controller.

I get the following warning in the event log under “Administrative Events” every 30 seconds when this happens:

  • Log Name: System
  • Source: Storvsc
  • ID: Storvsc
  • Message: “Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.”

I get this error once or twice a week and it has caused serious problems since one of the virtual servers that have this problem is a fileserver and the second hard drive contains all the data.

The only quick solution to the problem that I have found is to force the virtual machine to stop using the “Turn Off” feature since a normal shut down does not work (stops at shutting down the event log or similar) and then start the virtual machine again.

You can also wait for about 30 minutes or longer until the disk for some reason becomes accessible again by itself.

My research into this problem shows that:

  • Only 2 of the 10 VMs running Windows Server 2012 RTM that I have, have this problem.
  • Both these VMs have a second virtual hard drive (dynamically expanding VHDX) that cannot be accessed for 30 minutes or longer.
  • Check Disk of the virtual hard drive shows no errors.
  • The second hard drive is attached to the virtual SCSI controller.
  • I can find no problems at all with the physical storage on the (not related) 4 hosts that I have. The problem exists only in the VMs.

I have now attached the second virtual hard drive to the virtual IDE controller to see if this permanently fixes this problem (i.e. does not happen for at least a week).

Is there something wrong with the virtual SCSI controller or the virtual SCSI device driver that comes with Windows Server 2012 RTM? Does anyone else have this problem?
