Unable to recreate replica as I cannot delete the xml files for the old VM on Hyper-v Cluster

My setup

There are 2 sites each running a Hyper-v 2012-R2 cluster comprising of 5 nodes each.

All the machines are in a HA state and stored on the shared clustered resource.

Initially we had replication working and it was replicating all the servers from Site A to Site B

There were some replication issues which needed me to stop the replication and redo it again, in doing so I firstly removed replication on Fail-over cluster manager on Site A and did the same on Site B.

On one of the servers I had to remove the VM, although the VM config and Disks still remain on the Site B Cluster.

I was trying to recreate the replica but it always fails with the following error :

Hyper-v failed to enable replication for virtual machine xxxxxxxx operation aborted (0x80004004).....

I followed an article to stop the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management Service and try delete the file, When i tried to stop the service it would restart automatically and I was unable to delete the file. I put the service in disabled which kept it stopped however I was still unable to delete the files. I also tried to get File assassin which can help delete and clear locked files but it too was unable to delete it while the service was running or stopped as well as its additional mode whereby it will delete it on next reboot.

The  Article Https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/4c4f2535-81ee-4a21-a920-b5632de2be37/hyperv-old-vm-folders-cannot-be-deleted?forum=winserverhyperv

makes mention of stopping another service Hyper-V Image Management Service but I am unable to find it on 2012-R2 server.

I have also tried to put the additional nodes in a paused drained roles state leaving only one node as the active one but it still will not let me delete the VM config files, without removing those files I cannot re-initiate the Replication.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

VMs NIC IP

0
0

Usually, on Hyper-V hosts I assign static IP to a NIC with Management (so V-switch is created and V-Nic is created for the host)

For VMs network, I uncheck management option and leave the NIC on DHCP.

I forgot the theory....

1. why when run IPCONFIG on host VMs NIC is not listed at all?

2. How to see DHCP address received. Didn't check DHCP and DNS servers but...

3. When run nslookup on host only one IP appears for the hostname.

What happens behind the scene...?

Don't have time to read a lot of theory. Just if somebody can provide clear answers to the questions will be appreciated.

Thx.

Hyper-V 2012 VMs freeze on large file transfers

I have a small non-clustered Hyper-V Server setup as follows:

HP ML350p Gen8 Server, 6 core E5-2620 CPU and 32GB Memory running Server 2012 (full GUI) with the Hyper-V role enabled.

The Server has 8 disks, 1 pair of RAID1 15k disks for the Server 2012/Hyper-V OS, and 3 pairs of RAID1 10K disks for 3 VMs (ie each VM has its own pair of RAID 1 disks). The NICs in the Server are 4 x gigabit ports on an internal 331i card and 4 x gigabit on an external 331T card. The Hyper-V Server is  not running anything other than the Hyper-V role, the LogMeIn client and Symantec SEP SBE 2013 (with recommended Hyper-V exclusions in place) and the VMs are a Domain Controller, a SQL Server and a File Server. Currently all VMs have their own single 1GB NIC connection on the 331T card, all VMs have a single IP address and are on the same subnet, no VLANs are used.

I have applied what hot fixes I can from a TechNet article that recommended how to setup Hyper-V.

Initially I had a problem with NIC latency during pings, which we traced to being due to the ML350 Gen8 Server's NICs not liking VMQ enabled. When disabled all looked fine, but we had not yet tried to use the Server in production.

Recently (getting ready to go in to Production use) we have noticed when transferring a 3.5GB ISO of SQL media to a file share on one of the VMs from a desktop PC that this causes the VM to lock up. The file copy will still complete but the screen freezes when accessed via Hyper-V manager or remotely via LogMeIn and sometimes the LogMeIn remote session is dropped too. If you cancel the file copy the console is immediately responsive again.

Since we built the server a while back, HP had subsequently released an updated NIC driver which we installed and it seems to have fixed the VMQ issue, but with or without VMQ enabled we seem to experience the lockups as soon as we transfer medium to large size files. The issues were there before and after we upgraded the NIC driver, we were hoping it would address the issue, but it didn't. These servers are very lightly loaded and the problem occurs even on the SQL Server VM with the SQL service disabled (ie the server has hardly anything running at all and the console freezes with a single user performing a single file copy).

We have 3 VMs on the Server, 2 are running Server 2012 and seem to be more affected, the VM running Server 2008 R2 seems less affected. VM to VM transfers seem to be working better (ie slows down slightly but no lock ups), it is only during external network transfers. Also the faster the transfer speed is, the worse the issue becomes. If the file is copied to a share on the Hyper-V Host the issue does not occur, only transfers to the VMs.

Does anyone have any idea what might be the issue here? I saw a hotfix for 2008 for a similar issue but can't seem to find anything for Server 2012.

Hi,

How much of a performance impact would it make to thin provision a terminal services servers' page file?

Thanks, Matt.

Hyper-v Replication details

Hello Folks

I am testing Hyper-V Replica ; have a question about concept of reverse replication .
Let's say we have a host A that replicates a test VM to host B ; we do a manual fail-over and then we decide to reverse .
when a reverse replication happens from host B to Host A ; does it initiate an entire replication again ? or it is able
to some what identify and just send the delta ?

Windows 2012 Getting files ready for installation.....zzzzz

Hi,

I am using a windows 8.1 management workstation to manage my hyper-v 2012 R2 core server via Hyper-V manager.

So I went to create my first Windows 2012 R2 STD with GUI, selected the Dell bootable ISO (6GB) and the installation has started.

I wait 50 minutes and it has only done 33% of the install and it is sitting on "Getting files ready for installation":

Is this normal?

If it were being install on a physcial server I think it would be quicker.

Can anyone explain to me how long this should take?

My hyper-v server core runs on a Dell R720 quad core Intel CPU 2.4GHZ, it has SAS drives.

My management workstation has an I7 2.2Ghz.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Alfred

Win2003 SP2 VM won't boot to safe mode

I have a Windows Server 2003 SP2 VM set up in Hyper-V on my Windows Server 2008 R2 server.  The VM was created as an export from AppAssure 5 export to Hyper-V Virtual Standby.  This particular server won't complete the boot but "sits" at the Windows splash screen indefinitely (I've let it run for two hours with no change).  I specifically use the work "sits" vs. "hangs" because the progress bar continues to move and the CPU usage fluctuates between 20 and 30%.

AppAssure T3 support want me to try to boot into safe mode but I'm unable to do so.  I'm connecting to the VM through Hyper-V manager on my local Windows 7 PC.  I have inserted the integration services disk in the vmguest and it shows that keyboard input is being captured but it doesn't seem to recognize the F8 keystroke.

Before I try to run startup recovery from install I was hoping someone here might be able to offer insight into why I'm unable to boot to safe mode.  I do have one other VM server created through the AppAssure export and I can boot normally or into safe mode with that one.

Thanks in advance for any insight provided.

VM cannot connect to it's host

I am running a 8 node Hyper-V Failover Cluster.
The cluster has a management interface, a VM LAN virtual switch (not shared with management OS) and a iSCSI and two DMZ virtual switches.

The SCVMM server is also a VM running on this cluster.

The general problem is that a VM on a host cannot reach the host, and vice versa. Ping, WinRM for example.
This also means that SCVMM always has a not responding host. The one where it's VM is on at that moment.

The VLAN tags used is the same for the management interface and the VM's using the VM LAN virtual switch.
We set the VLAN ID for a VM in the VM's settings, and the VLAN ID for the management interface is set in the team properties.

The NIC is a QLogic QLE3242 with four VNICs per physical port. There is a team consisting of one VNIC of each physical port.
The management team is tagged to a specific VLAN ID. The VM LAN team is untagged since we do that in the VM settings.

All QLE3242's in the nodes are connected to a Cisco Nexus 5200 switch each, which is one logical swtich.
The switch is transparent. No VLAN tagging done there at all.

Could the VLAN tagging on the team be a problem? Meaning, would setting the VLAN ID on with Set-NetAdapter be better/wiser? And more importantly, resolve my issue?

I created Hyper-V Cluster (2012 R2) and have Fibre Chanel matrix (4 TB). Is it better co create one big lun for hiper-v storage or create two small luns (2 x 2 TB). Where will be better I/O? All disk used in matrix are the same.

Thank you for help

Clean Way To Prevent Signature Collision Of Mounting VHDX In Parallel PowerShell Scripting

0
0

I have multiple Virtual Machines I am to build from a Sysprepped VHDX. (All this is done automatically via Powershell)

For each of these Virtual Machines, I copy this VHDX and create a new one unique to the Virtual Machine. However, I wish to mount each one (in parallel) and make modifications before attaching it to the virtual machine and booting the first time.

The issue comes when it is time to mount the VHDX on the Physical Host, and these two processes attempt to mount at the same time. This causes a Signature Collision. I am looking for a clean - emphasis on clean - way to prevent signature collision. I have tried the following.

Using the Get-Drive cmdlet and determining if one exist with a FriendlyName of "Microsoft Virtual Disk" before mounting, to detect if another VHDX is already mounted and waiting til it dismounts - the latency in this flag being available causes this method to fail and still the two VHDXs attempt to mount and have signature collision, breaking the script associated with that VHDX.

I have tried using a Flag file, i.e., a text file to denote if a VHD is mounted and do a similar check - however, this relies on the file system and seems too clumsy for me.

I have considered Environment variables, but am afraid this is also too convoluted for such a simple task.

Any recommendations?

VMs Live Migration Issues

We Have Three Hyper-V Host with Shared Cluster.

Hyper-V Host 1= CS1

Hyper-V Host 2 = CS2

Hyper-V Host 3 = CS3

I am successful able to live migrate VM’s from CS1 to CS2 and CS2 to CS1 but unable to live migrate CS1 & CS2 to CS3

Following Error is Recorded at cluster Manager

Event id : 1205

Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine CS-FileServer' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role 'CS-FileServer' failed. The error code was '0x2' ('The system cannot find the file specified.').

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

SCVMM 2012 SP1 Virtual Switch on Cluster Node Disappears

I have been running into an interesting but an alarming issue with virtual switches. I have recently built a 4 node Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. I have built numerous 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V clusters before, so I am pretty familiar with the process. I have rebuilt my VMM due to software problems, and on this new cluster, I have configured the virtual switches with nic teaming on 2 of the virtual switches.

I have 4 clusters being managed by this VMM.. and this newly built cluster keeps losing all of the VMM virtual switch configurations, meaning if I go to properties on the problem host and click on virtual switches, its blank. Refresh host cluster flags all virtual machines in this cluster as "Unsupported Configuration," making the vm unmanageable via VMM.

Information (26844)
Virtual switch (Virtual Switch Name) is not highly available because the switch is not available in host (One of the Hyper-V Hosts).

Recommended Action

All virtual servers on that host still has connectivity, as all virtual switch configs are normal when looking at it with Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Manager..

The workaround is to evacuate the host using Failover Cluster Manager and reboot the host. Then refresh the host. Then refresh the VM's. I cannot consider this a 'workaround' as I cannot be rebooting my hyper-V hosts every week.. and migrating virtual servers constantly just for this reason. (DPM backups have a FIT with csv's if it tries to backup a vm on a same csv as another vm thats being migrated.)

I have been wrestling with this problem for a few weeks now. The cluster has been slicked and completely rebuilt.. Still same problems. Has ANYONE else out there seen this issue? Does ANYONE out there suggest a way to go about further troubleshooting this issue?

Trim with clustere shared volume and SAN

Hi all,

I have a cluster of 4 Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts. They are connected to a SAN via fiber channel.

My guest machines range from server 2000 to server 2012 r2.

The LUN provisioned on my SAN (Oracle ZFS3-2 or 7000) are thin provisioned.

My virtual hard disks are both VHD and VHDX.

I need to know how to recover the deleted space from my SAN. Today it just keeps building up until it fills up. I have read about Trim or Unmap but am yet to find a comprehensive doc where I can explore it in detail. I appreciate any help that comes my way.

The two servers are running Hyper-v server core 2012R2. It seems like i have a diffrent view. And i dont have the 2012R2 options when i am managmin the two host. But on my local computer i got all the futures. Why is that so? Both my Hyper-v server are full updated and my client ahve all the updates. .

Bitlocker within Virtual Machines on Hyper-V 2012 R2 Host

I'm just trying to get a definitive answer to the question of can we enable Bitlocker encryption within a VM that's housed on a hyper-V 2012 R2 host?

Some posts I've seen say it can be done and detail the steps, but others suggest that you can only use Bitlocker on data drives within the VM and not boot drives.

Can anyone please clarify the situation for me?

Cheers for now

I can't seem to get Hyper-V installed.

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro 64

Steps to reproduce:

1. Add/Remove Features

2. Add Hyper-V, and all subsets

3. Click OK.

4. Click Restart when prompted.

5. Computer will reboot and then work on configuring features.  At 91% the computer will stop and display the error message "Unable to add feature..." and then roll back entirely.

Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause and fix?

Thanks,

Daniel
