Dedicate more CPU space to Virtual Machine

$

Hi,

I have an VM with 8 virtual cores dedicated to it. The physical VM has 8 cores and it's a Xeon CPU E5-2650.
However, when I am doing a stress test on the VM, the VM is getting really slow (normal of course) and it says CPU usage 100%.

But, when I check the physical CPU usage (hyper-V server 2012 core - Task Manager) it says well, maximum 4% usage.. and all my other VM's are still performing very good.

Is there a way to dedicate a much bigger part to a VM? I really need that option.

Thanks in advance!

MS-DOS 6.22 under Hyper-V

My question is really 2-part. I have a temporary need for an MS-DOS VM on my Server 2008 (R1) x64 test machine, so I downloaded MS-DOS 6.22 from the TechNet subscription area and created 3 VFD files for each of the install floppies. I then created a new VM and proceeded to install DOS 6.22, only the message I got was...

"Setup cannot install MS-DOS 6.22 because there is no operating system on this computer. This product is the MS-DOS 6.22 Upgrade..."

Question 1) Why in the world would the TechNet version of MS-DOS be an UPGRADE version??? That makes absolutely no sense at all. Is a "non-upgrade" DOS 6.22 installer available?

Question 2) I read that Hyper-V doesn't support MS-DOS. Is this just because there are no integration services for it? I really don't need them for this test.

Trim with clustere shared volume and SAN

Hi all,

I have a cluster of 4 Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts. They are connected to a SAN via fiber channel.

My guest machines range from server 2000 to server 2012 r2.

The LUN provisioned on my SAN (Oracle ZFS3-2 or 7000) are thin provisioned.

My virtual hard disks are both VHD and VHDX.

I need to know how to recover the deleted space from my SAN. Today it just keeps building up until it fills up. I have read about Trim or Unmap but am yet to find a comprehensive doc where I can explore it in detail. I appreciate any help that comes my way.

2012 R2 Generation 2 VM Boot Failure after Migration

$

I have encountered an issue after migrating virtual machines to a new host. It happens whether the VM has been moved with live migration or though a shutdown, export, import process.

The hosts are both 2012 R2 Datacenter. The virtual machines are Generation 2 and also have 2012 R2 Datacenter. All the systems where installed with the April ISO. The only difference between the hosts is that one only has no other updates. The other has all recommended and optional updates as off 2014-10-10.

Once the machine has migrated to the updated host the next time it attempts to boot up (after a restart, ect.) it will fail with one of these two messages.

This happens whether the virtual machine has updates or is a fresh install from the April ISO. Once the machine is migrated back to the host that does not have any updates it will boot back up without any issues.

Notes:
The virtual machines where created on the host without any updates.
When creating a new virtual machine on the host with updates the 2012 R2 ISO bluescreens.
I setup another host machine without updates, tested migration to it and then ran updates. Same issue occurs.
I have tried boot with and without secure boot enabled also tries it with drive signature enforcement disabled. No change either.
This does not happen with generation 1 machines.

What I am trying to figure out is, if it truly is an update issue which update might it be so that it can be avoided? It would also be interesting to figure out if there is a workaround to get affect virtual machines to boot back up.

Let me know what your ideas are or if there are any other tests you would like me to provide.

Hi,

I have ugraed my client to Windws 8.1 prof. After some digging i found out that it was posible to export a snapshot(if you have multiple snapshot) while using Hyper-v manager in windows 8.1 to a Hyper-v 2012R2 server. In my old pc win 7 prof i had the option to export but it didt work on running VM. On the win 8.1 i dont have that options? am  i missing some updates?

Any tips? fix?

0x80070569 when I'm trying to activate replication on 2012R2 Hyper-V

Hi Folks,

since a bsod on a standalone hypervisor of on of our customers the replication stopped and I was not able to get it working again. I altered the replication settings and tried again. It synced for a couple of minutes then crashed.

I'm able to create new VMs and also alter the settings of current ones. The replicaserver is also a 2012R2 standalone.

I've already checked the local security principal in "allow to run as service" for "NT virtual machine/virtual machines"

Private virtual switch

$

Hello!

There are two virtual switches: External and Private.

Connections:

Private: test domain: virtual machines "DC" (20.1.1.2)  and "CLIENT" (20.1.1.3), "FW" (20.1.1.1)

External: virtual machine named "FW" (firewall) - 10.1.1.1

Virtual machine FW has two Vnics: 10.1.1.1 and 20.1.1.1, RRAS installed and routing is enabled.

The question: should virtual machines from the testing domain be able to access 10.1.1.0 network if FW is their default gateway (in other words, can vms connected to the PRIVATE switch access other subnets)?

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Hyper-V on Server 2012 - Windows Server Backup is breaking replication

$

Hello all,

We have two Server 2012's with Hyper V running on both. Each server is functioning as a replica for certain servers on each server. This works well. I am monitoring Hyper-V replication using the Get-VMReplication Cmdlet.

Each servers runs a full Windows Server Backup during the night.

The problem I am having is when this backup is running replication is failing, when the backup is finished replication continues as normal. This unfortunately trips the above 20% threshold for a "Warning" on replication health so I am finding it difficult to monitor.

The errors I get during the backup:

Event ID 32546. Error. 'TS2008' failed to perform the operation. The operation cannot be performed for this virtual machine while it is in its current state. (Virtual machine ID 85AB616E-4080-43D2-8ABF-AE6171FCE08E)

Event ID 32315. Warning. Hyper-V failed to replicate changes for virtual machine 'TS2008' (Virtual Machine ID 85AB616E-4080-43D2-8ABF-AE6171FCE08E). Hyper-V will retry replication after 5 minute(s).

These repeat periodically every 5 minutes (so on each replication through the backup).

Any ideas how I can mitigate this or what the proper procedure is to backup this and keep replication working?

Losing Access to Cluster Shared Volumes: Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('CSV Disk1') has entered a paused state because of '(c0000435)'

Hi,

Just built a Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V failover cluster connected to Equallogic 4110 storage arrays with latest firmware and HIT kits.
When creating a clone or vm from a template we see that the cluster loses access to the storage csv volume that is hosted on the equallogic storage with the following errors:

Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('CSV Disk1') has entered a paused state because of '(c0000435)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.

Can anyone shed any light onto this issue?

SCVMM 2012 SP1 Virtual Switch on Cluster Node Disappears

$

I have been running into an interesting but an alarming issue with virtual switches. I have recently built a 4 node Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. I have built numerous 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V clusters before, so I am pretty familiar with the process. I have rebuilt my VMM due to software problems, and on this new cluster, I have configured the virtual switches with nic teaming on 2 of the virtual switches.

I have 4 clusters being managed by this VMM.. and this newly built cluster keeps losing all of the VMM virtual switch configurations, meaning if I go to properties on the problem host and click on virtual switches, its blank. Refresh host cluster flags all virtual machines in this cluster as "Unsupported Configuration," making the vm unmanageable via VMM.

Information (26844)
Virtual switch (Virtual Switch Name) is not highly available because the switch is not available in host (One of the Hyper-V Hosts).

Recommended Action

All virtual servers on that host still has connectivity, as all virtual switch configs are normal when looking at it with Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Manager..

The workaround is to evacuate the host using Failover Cluster Manager and reboot the host. Then refresh the host. Then refresh the VM's. I cannot consider this a 'workaround' as I cannot be rebooting my hyper-V hosts every week.. and migrating virtual servers constantly just for this reason. (DPM backups have a FIT with csv's if it tries to backup a vm on a same csv as another vm thats being migrated.)

I have been wrestling with this problem for a few weeks now. The cluster has been slicked and completely rebuilt.. Still same problems. Has ANYONE else out there seen this issue? Does ANYONE out there suggest a way to go about further troubleshooting this issue?

Print Server is responding Very Slow in Hyper V

There have been lot of techincal pages for Slowness of Hyper-V guest VM, RDP and also Print Server. But our situation is different, although the print spooling is working fine from Hyper-V VM, the installation of driver is Very Slow, it sometimes cost us 30minutes for one system. Even if when we are checking the property of any one printer from Print Management window it cost us 5 minute. We are using Hyper V 2012R2.

We tried by changing the guest VMQ setting in Hyper V, now we have assigned didicated Host NIC to VM, but no effect. Also I have upgraded the Broadcom drivers to 16.6.0.4 of the Host system.

Need help to resolve this issue, as we will using this Print Server for re-installtion of driver for quiet a big user base. The Print Server is running in Windows Server 2012 R2.

Hyper-V live migration failed

There is Hyper-V cluster with 2 nodes. Windows Server 2012 R2 is used as operating system.

Trying to live migrate test VM from node 1 to node 2 and get error 21502:

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine test' failed.
'Virtual Machine test' failed to fixup network settings. Verify VM settings and update them as necessary.

VM has Network Adapter connected to Virtual switch. This vSwitch has Private network as connection type.

If I set virtual switch property to "Not connected" in Network Adapter settings of VM I get successful migration.

All VM's that are not connected to any private networks (virtual switches with private network connection type) can be live migrated without any issues.

Is there any official reference related to Hyper-V live migration of VM's that have "private network" connection type?

HV 2012 R2 and LIS for Debian

$

good day

We have HV Server 2012 R2. A vm (generation 1) with guest os Debian 7 is running on it. Get following eventlog:

**
"Networking driver in <virtualmachine> loaded but has a different version from the server. Server version 5.0 Client version 3.2......"

**

Have found LIS 3.5 on the ms website but it seems it is only for RHEL and CentOS.

Is there any LIS available for Debian or do we have to life with those warning events logged?

Thanks in advance

Andre

Raid setup recommendations - 8 x 600GB and 2 virtual servers

$

Hello,

Are in the phase of installing av server with 8 x 600 GB disks.

The host will not do anything particular besides the Hyper-V role and backup to tape.

HW

8 x 600GB discs.

128GB RAM

Two guests.

1. AD,File,Print

2. SQL and application

What is your recommondation?

I am thinking about RAID10 on the whole lot.

dedicate 300GB to the host, and approx 1TB to both of the guests.

What will i gain here? 1 disk failure is ok, maybe 2 disk failures, if they are different mirror set? Is that right?

And performance will be overall good?

Best regards

Aksel

WSUS causes Hyper-V Server to reboot

I have 2 Hyper-V server in my cluster with a WSUS server in the domain. Recently I have setup Cluster-Aware Updating as well and it is configured to run every 3rd Tuesday of the month.

Also, I setup a GPO for the Hyper-V servers that I thought would prevent Windows Update from installing and rebooting the server. However, this morning both Hyper-V server rebooted at about the same time.

I'm not sure what I'm missing in the GPO that is allowing the updates to install and reboot the servers before CAU gets to it
Here is my GPO setting for the Hyper-V servers.

hv 2012: can I use vhdx for VM running server 2008

Hi,

I need to run Server 2008 R2 on HyperV Server 2012 host.

vhdx option shows only OS 2012 is supported.

I created first 2008 without taking this in concideration and left vhdx for 2008 server.

Not supported, does it mean may not function normally? Or should not work at all?

Hyper-V bin file consuming disk space.

Hi,

Host OS Configuration:- Windows 2008 Enterprise ,Hyper-V with KB950050 (64bit) update.
Host Hardware Configuration:- Xeon X7350@ 2.9 GHz x 4 CPU / 64 GB

I installed virtual servers on Hyper-V and found that everytime ".bin" file( with GUID) in snapshot folder ( default path is - C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Virtual Machines - this location can be changed using the snapshot location settings in Hyper-V settings) consuming disk space exactly same as memory configured for the guest OS in host system disk.It get disappeared when the guest OS became down.
we require to configure virtual servers with 20 GB RAM or more & found it requires additional disk same as RAM allocated in host system apart from the VHD allocating.

Does this mandatory ? i didnt find any MS article stating anything about it.
there is no snapshot created in hyper-v for virtual servers anyway.
Can we avoid this additional disk space requirement ?
