How to remove a snapshot? (2008 R2)

$

I just want to be sure that nothing has changed and that this is the correct process, as outlined in this other TechNet post here:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/672c5a64-ff83-42c3-946d-c7beed341199/snapshot-on-hyperv-windows-2008-r2-server?forum=winserverhyperv

Right now I have a VM on a 2008 R2 host that I wasn't even aware was snapshotting, so it's been going for aabout a year and a half.  Consequently the .VHD file is I think around 250GB, whereas the AVHD file is around 600GB.

As I understand it, I need to:

  1. Turn off the VM
  2. In Hyper-V Manager highlight the VM in question
  3. In the Snapshots pane it then shows two lines:  line 1 is the machine name and a date, May 2013.  Below that is a subline that says "Now".
  4. I right-click line 1 item, choose Delete Snapshot.
  5. Somehow the snapshot merges with the main file or something

Is that it?  Also there is an option for Delete Snapshot Subtree - just want to make sure I don't have to pick that?

Thank you.

Forced reboot of VMs when Hyper-V host shuts down

I've a number of VMs running on a Windows 8.1 laptop with 2 x SSDs. Integration Services are installed on each VM and the settings all are set to save the state on power down.

Now when I start up my laptop I expect that the running VMs will resume. The state shows as running on each but when I log on I get the unexpected shutdown message with error in event log with ID of 41 (Kernel-Power).

This only affects a number of my VMs and the only noticeable pattern so far is that only the VMs on my secondary drive are affected. Any VMs that run on the OS drive are fine. Not sure if this is a red herring but may be of interest.

Is there any way I can diagnose what's happening?

Move Virtual Machine Storage stuck "Loading" CSVs

As I understand it the "Move Virtual Machine Storage" screen is supposed to enumerate the CSVs available to the cluster in the bottom left portion of the window.  It seems to be stuck on a "Loading..." status and never shows the CSVs.  Also, when I try the "Add Share" button and type in a share to use it doesn't do anything.  Thoughts?

Issues With BCDEDIT on VHDX. The Requested System Device Cannot be Found

Howdy,

I am trying to recover my old Windows 8 setup on VHDX and have problems booting from that VHDX in Hyper-V.

I imported an old VM, added a VHDX with Windows 8 on that virtual disk.

The virtual disk has 2 partition:

MSR partition

System partition

The virtual disk is a GPT disk with NTFS on System partition.

I am trying to create a BCD boot configuration database and am experiencing issues with BCDEDIT returning errorThe requested system device cannot be found:

How do I fix that? Any clue?

Thank you.

Unable to connect two network on Hyper -V VM

Dear All,

I have Windows server 2012 R2 installed with Hyper-V role. I wanted to configure different sites of Active Directory in Hyper-v and created one VM 2008 R2 SP1 as router with two internal NIC and added 2 Server 2008 R2 SP1 VM as Windows server and assigned one single NIC to each machine. Now both VMs were pinging their subnet IP address on router machine but could not ping other subnet IP address of other machine. I installed Routing and remote access role on router VM and configured RIP option to access both Windows server but unable to ping the server.

Can some one guide me what I am missing to ping or access both servers simultaneously.

Thanks in Advance.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 roles, access denied, failed to connect to service, AzMan....

Hi All,

I have followed dozens of tutorials to set up roles for Hyper-V, but I keep coming up short. I have no problem managing the five domain-joined 2012 R2 Core Hyper-V servers we have remotely from my Windows 8.1 PC, but I have a lab box I would like to grant specific permissions to some Help Desk users on.

The key tutorial I have followed is from John Howard (http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2008/04/01/part-4-domain-joined-environment-hyper-v-remote-management-you-do-not-have-the-requested-permission-to-complete-this-task-contact-the-administrator-of-the-authorization-policy-for-the-computer-computername.aspx), but it still does not allow a non-admin account to use Hyper-V Manager remotely. Without his tutorial, I get access denied with my "TestUser" account. After following his steps, Hyper-V Manager appears to connect to the server, but says "The Virtual Machine Management service is not available." Even using his HVRemote with the /show flag, everything shows as PASSED.

Digging deeper, I see dozens of failed audit Event Viewer logs saying "TestUser" is requesting READ to Service Control Manager. That sent me searching, and I foundhttp://arnoutboer.nl/weblog/?p=300 and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa374928(v=vs.85).aspx. After granting "AU" (Authenticated Users) every permission resembling "read", Hyper-V Manager now shows "There are no virtual machines to show" (or something along those lines); even though I know there are about 30 VMs on this host. I try to create a new VM (out of curiosity, and now that those options actually appear), and I get permission denied immediately after the create VM wizard pops up.

Why is this such a convoluted process? I would appreciate any help creating Roles for Hyper-V 2012.

Thank you in advance!

Using NIC Teaming and a virtual switch for Windows Server 2012 host networking!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mOuoIWzmdE

Hi thanks for reading. Now I may well have my terminology incorrect here so I will try to explain  as best I can and apologies from the start.

It’s a bit of both Hyper-v and Server 2012R2.

I am setting up a lab with Server 2012 R2. I have several physical network cards that I have teamed called “HostSwitchTeam” from those I have made several Virtual Network Adaptors such as below examples.

New-VMSwitch "MgmtSwitch" -MinimumBandwidthMode weight -NetAdaptername "HostSwitchTeam" -AllowManagement $false

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Vswitch" -SwitchName "MgmtSwitch"

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Cluster" -SwitchName "MgmtSwitch"

When I install Hyper-V and it comes to adding a virtual switch during installation it only shows the individual physical network cards and the HostSwitchTeam for selection.  When installed it shows the Microsoft Network Multiplexor Driver as the only option. Is this correct or how does one use the Vswitch made above and incorporate into the Hyper-V so a weight can be put against it.

Still trying to get my head around Vswitches,VMNetworkadapters etc so somewhat confused as to the way forward at this time so I may have missed the plot altogether!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Client VPN through VM

I am trying to setup a VM environment that can access a customers environment. We will talk via cisco VPN that is the customers vpn. The customer does not support split tunneling

The problem, when connecting via remote desktop to the VM I get the following message "vpn establishment capability from a remote desktop is disabled. A vpn connections will not be established." Is this a problem on my side or the customers.

I also have setup a vnc to the VM and got farther and actually connected to the VPN; however I lost connection to the VM. I had to restart the VM to reconnect.

the customer is not helpful and I am spinning my wheels. any suggestions to get this resolved?

Strange problem with virtual machines backup (Hyper-V 2012R2)

$

Hi
I have a strange problem with backup of virtual machines in one of my Hyper-V environments. Let me describe how does it looks like: There are two physical servers - HP DL360 G8. They are used as hosts for four virtual machines - domain controllers in two domains. Each of them runs one DC in every domain. I've configured backup "inside" every virtual machine (with Windows Server Backup tool), in its operating system, because domain controllers should have their system state, regularly backuped, etc. Backup is made on the network share - all machines to the same server as destination. And now the case - two virtual server are backuped as expected - the operation takes 3 - 4 minutes and is always succeded. But in case of two remaining it looks as below:
- Backup operation starts (is scheduled).
- Volume shadow copy is made.
- The first partition of VM starts to be copied. It's Windows 2012 R2 Generation2 VM, so it has EFI, Recovery and C: partition. EFI is as first and at this moment backup stucks for a 2-3 hours! Progress of copying is 0%. After for example 3 hours this partition is completed and starts the next (disk C:). And again - it freezes for a few hours and suddenly is pushed. As a result the backup is made successfully, but it takes for example 10 hours.
Both "dodgy" VMs are on separated hosts. All four of them were installed in the same time. I tried to change destination to locally connected disk, but no result. It's interesting as well, that after rebooting VM, the first backup is made normally, but every next has described problem again. In EventLog I can't find any errors, I don't know how to diagnose such case precisely, etc. Have you got idea what can cause such behaviour or where on the server should I look for some hints?

Thanks
Marcin

0x80070569 when I'm trying to activate replication on 2012R2 Hyper-V

Hi Folks,

since a bsod on a standalone hypervisor of on of our customers the replication stopped and I was not able to get it working again. I altered the replication settings and tried again. It synced for a couple of minutes then crashed.

I'm able to create new VMs and also alter the settings of current ones. The replicaserver is also a 2012R2 standalone.

I've already checked the local security principal in "allow to run as service" for "NT virtual machine/virtual machines"

cannot install hyper-v

Hello everyone,

I would like to enable Hyper-V on my windows 8 laptop (Acer Aspire E1-430P) , to practise at home.

I looked on the internet how to enable it but when I tried it I got stuck.

When i am in the control panel "turn Windows features on or of" I should be able to add Hyper-V.

Unfortunattely Hyper-V is not in that list.

Does anyone know what to do now to enable hyper-v?

hi ,

I configured  the below and VM can't ping gateway

  1. two Logical network one is PVLAN and another one is VLAN Logical network
  2. Create one VM network on PVLAN   Using Primary VLAN ID 103  and secondary VLAN 5
  3. Create another VM Network  on the VLAN Logical network  with vlan ID 103
  4. Create UPLINK port contain both of the above VM network
  5. Create logical switch on the host  using the above uplink port and assign new virual network adapter with VLAN 103 Of the Second VM network
  6. now I can access the host  but when i create new VM "Test01"  and assign network adapter to the PLAN VM network  Using Primary VLAN ID 103  and secondary VLAN 5

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-VMNetworkAdapterVlan

VMName VMNetworkAdapterName Mode     VlanList
------ -------------------- ----     --------
       Vnic-103             Access   103
Test01 Test01               Isolated 103,5

the vm access the gateway if it is use vlan network  but if failed if it is used PVLAN network

now  what is missing  to do to allow the vm to access internet or access the gateway ??

I'm a little confused, but does the Hyper-V Managment Console exclude the number of days a machine has been up for???

These machines have been up for more than 4 or 5 days... Is there a way to change this?

Thanks!

Server 2012 w./ 4 vm's running. How to put in place a setup secondary server as a "standby" or backup server.

I am running Windows Server 2012 with 4 Hyper V VM's.  If this server fails, I want to have in a place a secondary server that I can manually activate.  How can I set this up with the existing Hyper V info and not have to start over. The new (secondary) server will be 2012R2.  I can NOT redo the hard drives but want to configure the secondary server to take over if primary fails.  Is clustering an option??  How can I do this with the least amount of hassle??
