How to move a VM that has attached a PassThru Drive (physical drive)

$

Hello guys,

I have a dilema. I need to move several VMs from one hyper-v host (2012) to another host (2012 R2), but some of these VMS have attached a physical drive. It seems like it is not possible.

Is there any way to do that, please?

Thank you.

Best regards,

Gabriel

Problem vs virtual FC and Network

$

We have one hyper-v server that powered off uncorrectly. After that it lost all registry information about Hyper-V Virtual Switch Extension Adapter. And all cmd-lets that work vs VMSwitch return error. I reinstall server on the top of previous installation. That solves the problem vs VM switch. Now we have 2 new problems:

1) when i move servers from rds farm on reinstalled hyper-v server our clients from remote office are disconnecting from farm and can not connect while rds servers are on reinstalled hyper-v. Offices are connected by site-2-site vpn, dns records resolved successefully, hosts are pinged too. When users try to connect they see first credentials request to rds and than second to rd gateway, when they enter their creds they see popup error message "there is some error on remote pc". On the normal situation rd gateway not used.

But local clients works fine vs RDS farm while remote got error.

2) we have some vms vs virtual FC adapters. After reinstalling hyper-v host they lost their livemig ability. What i see - there are new initiators on SAN storage. I register it and make some livemig moves between hyper-v host and register all new initiators, before it i delete all inactive initiators. So what i have - is growing initiators count. There is the table of wwnn's ends and SP's endpoints:

08-B1

08-A1

09-B0

09-B1

09-A1

09-A0

0A-B0

0A-A0

0B-B1

0B-A1

0B-B0

0B-A0

I see that i have an odd connectivity pair for 09 and B0 wwnn's, but if i remove some of them live mig stop working between hosts. For example i remove first of odd pair and vm stop move between hv-01 and hv-02 hosts or if i remove other odd pair vs stop move between hv-02 and hv-03.

What i do wrong?

Domain PC Sync doesn't stick

Everytime I run w32tm on my hyper-v guest secondary domain controller (2012 standard) it sync's with my physical PDC (also 2012 standard) but only for a second or two and then it shifts 20 - 70 seconds ahead.  I have a group policy configured for the PDC to be the time source and another policy for my hyper-v hosts and guests to query the PDC.  The secondary domain controller which is a hyper v guest also does have the following registry change (HKLM\SYSTEM\CCS\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\VMICTimeProvider, Enabled=0).  What it causes synced time to not stick?

Error trying to mount the DVD to a network based ISO image in Windows 2008 Hyper-V RC0

Greetings,

When I try to configre the guest OS settings to mount the CD/DVD drive to an ISO image I have setting on a file share, I consistently get an error. The only time I have been able to mount an ISO since upgrading to RC0 (I don't remember if I tested this in the BETA) is when the ISO is locally on the Windows 2008 Hyper-V server.

To be specific, I get the following error:

Virtual Machine Connection (title of the window)

Inserting the disk failed.

Failed to add device 'Microsoft Virtual CD/DVD disk'.

User account does not have sufficient privelage to open attachment '\\remoteserver\share\ISONAME.ISO'.

Error: 'General access denied error'

'NEWGUESTOSNAME' failed to add device 'Microsoft Virtual CD/DVD Disk'. (VMID 26C8B66F-5D3F-47F9-9D80-474D0F778522)

'NEWGUESTOSNAME': User Account does not have sufficient privelage to open attachement '\\remoteserver\share\ISONAME.ISO'.

Error: 'General access denied error' (0x80070005). (VMID 26C8B66F-5D3F-47F9-9D80-474D0F778522)

I am not sure what credentials it is using. It looks almost like it is using the new computer name as credentials or something like that. The account I am logged in as at the time is a Domain Admin and has access to every server and every share. I can browse to the ISO just fine through the Hyper-V Insert Disk function, it just won't take.

I have checked the Hyper-V server settings and the Guest OS settings and can't find where to specifcy what account to use to connect to remote ISOs. Anyone have any clue on what I am doing wrong?

Estimating Snapshop merge time

Is there anyway to estimate how much time it may take my VM to merge after I shut it down post Deleting the Snapshot Subtree?  There is only one snapshot, but it was back from 12/19/13 when I was first learning about Hyper-V and didn't realize the impact of not merging it back then.  Only reason I ask is there is an essential application we use 24/7 being an EMS company so I wanted to provide a timeframe for it being down overnight.

My host Hyper-V 2012 Core server is a Dell R710, 2x6 Core CPU (24 virtual), 48GB RAM with only 2VMs.

My current VHD and AVHD file sizes for this particular VM are as follows:

C: 65GB AVHD / 63GB VHD (last mod. 10/2/14 @ 3:45p)
E: 140GB AVHD / 55GB VHD (last mod. 10/2/14 @ 3:52p)
a060744a...: 16.5K AVHD / 53K VHD (last mod. 10/2/14 @ 3:39p)

MS Virtual Machine Converter - Worked OK but doesn't shutdown source VM, now slow as a dog on "Copy disk(s)" step

$

First issue:

When converting a VM from ESXi to Hyper V using Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter I select the options to shutdown the guest on the ESXi and start it on the Hyper V hosts. When completed the VM is running on both still and never shut down on the ESXi.

Second issue:

The last VM I have been converting is the same size and spec as 3 others which each took approx. 3 hours. They were held up on Convert Disks for the majority of that and completing each other step fine.

Now this one has completed the other steps in the same timeframe, maybe a bit quicker, but now has been stuck on "Copy disk(s) for over 2 hours, still at only 55%. While it's done this, because it didn't shutdown the ESXi guest once converting the disk to local storage,

I have to cancel the process as changes have been made to that guest in this giant no explanation time. So that's now 5 hours conversion time down the toilet.

I have checked everywhere and can find no explanation for the delay in copying. I've checked the network and disk usage on the conversion machine and host and found no issue, I've checked the IOPS on the SAN it's all stored on, looks like it's not even being used. There's no bottleneck so why did 3 servers all the same go fine (literally the same size HD, the same Application on all, the same exact Specs) then the 4th do this shit?

Can not assign static IP address to CentOS 5.10 VM on Windows Server 2008 R2 or Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V

$

Hi,

I have created CentOS 5.10 VM on Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V. Installation of CentOS completed without any problem.

The problem I am facing is, I cannot assign static IP to CentOS 5.10 VM. LIS is installed and verified on Guest OS. NIC is also detected in VM and with DHCP I can get IP address, but if I am going to assign static IP I can’t see assigned IP address during “ifconfig”. Every time I am getting error “Error, some other host already uses address.”

On CetOS 6.X I am also facing same issue, but in CentOS 6.X if I add “ARPCHECK=no” in NIC configuration file it will accept the IP address. But in CentOS 5.10 I didn’t get luck.

I've already tried to install CentOS 5.10 on Server 2008 R2 but same issue dogged.

Can anyone help on this, it’s very critical situation for me, client is demanding for new VM on CentOS 5.10 only, need to assign new VM on next 2 days.

Extend .VHDX file (UserProfileDisk)

Hello

Got a issue, we use 2012R2, RDS, session based, and Collections.

All users have a user profile disk, and it is fixed as 20GB, we had an issue where we had to enable buffered exchange mode, and that filled up some of the User Profile Disks, those users are experiencing different problems now.

I need to extend/expand the UPD (VHDX) file.

I have mounted the UPD file, and went to Disc Manegement, and the Extend disk is greyed out, i did this on the Hyper-V host, which have the Hyper-v Role installed. Googled alot, and tried also to do it via PS, but the Import-Module Hyper-V does not work either on the profile server, which don't have Hyper-V module (i think).

Any ideas?

Best regards

Propagation delay in kvp info to ubuntu in integration services

$

Running HyperV on Windows 8.1 for testing, with planned deploy on 2008R2, and with Ubuntu 14.04 as guest.

I have the key-value pair information working.  Sometimes; and there is the question.

All I want is for the guest to obtain the HyperV virtual machine name from the host.  That's a bit arcane in bash but it works.

name=$(cat /var/lib/hyperv/.kvp_pool_3 | sed -e  's/^.*VirtualMachineName\x0*//g' -e 's/\x0.*//g')

However, it is not always current.  When I change the name using the Hyper-V manager, it sometimes propagates quickly, and sometimes not for many minutes.

I have confirmed that the hv_kvp_daemon is running.  It is the version in the Ubuntu distributions, most current as of today (3.13.0.37.44), and I have done an dist-upgrade (which was necessary to get it going).

It DOES work.  Just not in a predictable time.  I should note it seems (emphasis on "seems") to be correct after the guest reboots, but changes while running are not reliable.

Is that the intended behavior, correct only on reboot? Is there a control for how fast it propagates?

Hyper-V Replication over Dedicated LAN and "is alive" checks over Corporate LAN

$

I am testing Hyper-V replication to see if it will be a suitable replacement for the ArcServer RHA product.  One thing I am struggling with is configuring the replication to use the dedicated LAN, but still have the host servers verify over the corporate LAN.

I have seen the blogs on how to use a dedicated route and editing the hosts file to get replication to use the dedicated LAN, but that also changes the LAN in which the host servers communicate.  It seems to me that if the corporate LAN were to go down on the master server, I wouldn't be able to fail over the virtual machines to the replica server without first having to connect into the master server through the dedicated LAN of the replica server to shut down the virtual machines.

I need to be able to fail over to the replica server if the corporate network connection on the master server drops without having to go through the extra steps of connecting into the master server first.

Is it possible for the two items to be separated?  Can I tell Hyper-V to replicate using one specific IP destination on the dedicated LAN and have the replica server check to see if the master is live over the corporate LAN?

Exporting and Importing Virtual servers with Windows 2012 R2 Hyper V

$

Hi

We are looking for various options / best practice in exporting and importing VSs between Windows 2012 R2 servers. Live migration we tested between servers in same VLAN and it's fine, but some servers are in different VLAN and hardware firewall is there in between. So we exported the VS and while importing it, there is no option to export each Virtual disk to separate partitions / LUNs. Is it fine to create a new VS in the new server and just copy the VDs from the other HV host server, or exporting and importing is the only proper method?

Thanks in advance

Upgrade Guest OS to Windows Server 2012 R2 and use VHD from 2008 R2

I have a WS 2008R2 virtual machine (Host WS 2012R2) with two vhd/vhdx (Drive C: and D:). I want to upgrade this Guest OS to 2012 R2 by installing a new VM. Is it possible to create the new VM and just attach the Drive D: vhd/vhdx formatted on old 2008R2? What about NTFS issues? Will I be able to use 2012 R2 new features like deduplication on this Drive D:?

Thanks.

Guest Cluster Using a Shared Virtual Hard Disk and Replica

Hi all,

I've read that is suppoted to deploy a Guest Cluster Using a Shared Virtual Hard Disk:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn265980.aspx

but I've not understood some things:

1) is live migration supported for VM forming the cluster?

2) is storage live migration supported?

3) may the VM run on the same host or in different host?

4) Can I use Replica feature to replica the VM forming a cluster in a DR site?

Replicated VM Client Access?

How do other people configure access to Replicated VMs?

For instance I have a print server ARCPRINT on our Hyper V cluster. I have this replicated to our DR site.

How do I ensure that if shit hits the fan and the datacentre explodes clients can still print? At best the server will re-register with DNS with it's new IP address, which I have configured in the replica settings for a IP valid at that DR site, but clients will still take a fair while to update their DNS as most will have ARCPRINT cached with the DC IP address.

How do others address this?

VMs network speed

Hello!

There's a Hyper-V server (Windows Server 2012 R2, external V-switch, 1Gb nics) with two VMs (Win7 and WinServer2012R2, synthetic drivres, fresh OS installations). Both VMs show 10Gbs as their link speed.

As per https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/27b8312f-b7e8-4381-9274-3ec71266bd2a/hyperv-guest-shows-10gig-connection-but-transfer-rate-to-other-machines-on-gige-network-is-100mb-or?forum=winserverhyperv

"...the file transfer rate on a VM to VM file transfer will be primarily determined by the speed of the processor as the entire event takes place in software. The VMswitch will report its speed as 10Gbps, but the actual rate is completely dependent on the speed of the processors and the load on the machine. It can be much faster than 10Gbps, or it can be quite a bit slower."

...I'm expacting a network speed between VMs to be 10Gbps or "quite a bit slower", but it is ~ 23MBps, wich is not  "a bit slower" than 10Gbps.

In fact the file transfer speed between any of these VMs and any other host in our network (1Gbps) is faster then between the VMs themselves... How can it be???

Thank you in advance,

Michael
