Configure Networking in Hyper V

$

Hi,

I have a single R710 with hyper-v 2012 installed on it.

I am managing hyper v 2012 from a windows 8 host.

I have installed server 2012 VM.

I have 2 networks connected to the physical R710.

In virtual switch manager I have configured 2 switches. One of these switches is shared with the management OS hyper v.

Second switch just points to the second physical NIC.

My problem is this:

When i connect the VM to the first switch it works fine.

When i connect the VM to the second V switch (second physical NIC). The VM gets a DHCP IP address and is able to ping everything behind the FW. It just doesn't ping outside. i.e. google.com or 8.8.8.8

There are no firewall rules blocking traffic.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

No option to shrink a drive in Hyper-V?

I saw a few of the related topics but none really answered my question. Here's the issue: I have a Windows Server 2012 virtual machine Hyper-V with Microsoft Exchange installed on it. Long story short, I made the boot drive way too large, and it won't let me shrink it now.  In fact, I'm not seeing an option to shrink any of my drives in any of my Hyper-V instances - I'm running Hyper-V instances on Windows Server 2012 and 2008R2.

What prerequisites are necessary before I get an option to shrink?  If it just happens that all my current drives are unshrinkable (need vhdx, can't convert?), what's a good alternate method, short of deploying a brand new server and decommissioning the old one?  Is it possible to copy the contents of vhd/x drive onto a new one and then boot off the that?  Downtime is acceptable for this procedure.

How to manage a Hyper-V 2012R2 Host from Windows 7?

$

AFAIK This is the official Hyper-V Manager for Windows 7: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7887 it explicitly lists Hyper-V versions up to 2008R2, there is no mention of 2012 or 2012R2, and from trying to connect to my new Hyper-V 2012R2 I can confirm that it doesn't want to work.

From reading the docs on Hyper-V 2012/2012R2 remote management I've come to the conclusion that its only possible with Windows 8+ or Server 2012+ , but it cannot be used to manage Hyper-V 2008/2008R2...

Someone please tell me that this is just one big mistake on my part and that the product owner for Hyper-V at Microsoft is not this stupid...

Hi

I have Installed Windows 7 in VHD from my Windows 200 Server R2 and booting this machine natively.
Is it possible to use this VHD [Windows 7 installed inside] in Hyper-V virtual machine?

If yes how can I use it?

Thanks

Hi All,

I need to trigger a Memory Check on a VM running under Hyper-V 2012 R1. Using "http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff545499.aspx" as a guide a I have tried using the standard Right CTRL + Scroll Lock + Scroll Lock as well as alternate keys, e.g. Left and Right ALT keys etc.

Unfortunately I can't seem to trigger the Memory Check.

Has anyone else attempted to do this?

Essentially I am troublehshooting an issues ehere the vendor needs a complete memory dump to work out what is loaded at the time the issue occurs.

Any help would be great.

Can't Import VM to New Host

I replaced my Hyper-V host. I've been able to import all by one of my VM's back into the new host. This one in particular I see this in the event viewer when I try to import it. It seems to point to a network issue but all the VM's network were configured the same. As far as the machine goes the only difference is that this is a Linux machine and all the others were windows.

Cannot load a virtual machine configuration: The specified network resource or device is no longer available. (0x80070037). (Virtual machine ID F78ED323-E966-4EAB-B8CC-E7342DDE74CA)

Connectivity question using client hyper v on windows 8.1

Hi. I am creating a lab environment with 2 networks containing several vm’s running windows server 2012. I am connecting the networks using RRAS on a separate machine.

Each vm has 2 virtual switches; one is a private connection type  and the other is a public connection type. When both network connections are enabled on the vm’s, I cannot ping across the 2 netoworks. The only way I can ping across the 2 networks is if I disable the public network connection on the vm’s. Is there a way to have both the private and public network connections enabled and still be able to ping across the networks ? Thanks in advance.

Server 2012 with Hyper-V Manager - Virtual machine images are displaying unauthenticated local area connections

$

I've got 25 Hyper-V machines running on a Remote Desktop Services server.  The main image was sysprep'd and all subsequent images were created off that (from within Remote Desktop Services).  All images came through as expected, booted up, logged in and half of them are displaying unauthenticated to the LAN.

I have a 4 port NIC setup within Hyper-V to perform Teaming.

Hyper-V Setup in Server Manager

  • Teaming Mode: Switch Independent
  • Load Balancing Mode: Hyper-V Port
  • Standby Adapter: None

It's also set to a specific VLAN of 30.

Hyper-V Virtual Switch Manager:

Connection Type

  • External Network / Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver #2 (there's an seperate card doing a dfferent function)
  • Allow Manager operating system to share this network adapter IS Check Marked

VLAN ID

  • Enable virtual LAN identification for management OS IS CHECKMARKED
  • VLAN ID : 30

I have no problems at all talking to any network device, pings and tracerts work properly.  I'm using this set of Hyper-V machines as destinations for Zero Client machines; meaning they access these machines through Remote Desktops.  That part works great.

My issue is accessing a specific application as it seems to time out quite frequently.  The only thing I can point to is the potential LAN displaying Unauthenticated.  Any advice for this issue?

No Standalone RemoteFX machines?

I have a machine in a lab that I had hoped to use for RemoteFX projects. It is purposefully not connected to another domain.

Although in order to use RemoteFX you have to have Remote Desktop, which requires RD Licensing, which requires a domain, which requires active directory. And Active Directory and Remote Desktop can't coexist on one machine. So that won't work.

It occurred to me that maybe you could configure the server on another domain and then orphan the server with Remote Desktop licensing but no active directory. Seems kind of extreme. And of course the machine already has Microsoft Office on it. So changing the Remote Desktop Licensing will make Office fail since it currently has a standalone license and not a volume license.

Any insight?

Hyper-V encountered an error trying to access an object on computer 'localhost' .....->When try to install new Virtual machin in win8, 64 bit

am using windows 8, 64 bit system inside VMWARE in Ubuntu 14.04 . I have intel core i3 processor.

I want to install WIndows-7 inside windows 8 as a virtual machine. SO I tried to use "HYPER V MANAGER" with elevated privilege. wHEN I TRY , NEW->VM Machine->'after some steps'-> when I press Finish I get following error,

[WindowTitle]NewVirtualMachineWizard[MainInstruction]Hyper-V encountered an error while configuring the network on Windows7_32bit.[Content]Hyper-V encountered an error trying to access an object on computer 'localhost'

because the object was not found.Theobject might have been deleted,

or you might not have permission to perform the task.Verify that the

VirtualMachineManagement service on the computer is running.

If the service is running, try to perform the task again byusingRunasAdministrator.

my understand is: "we can use Hyper v, instead of Virtual box or as VMware player". I think in windows 8, hyper v server is not installed. does that is the problem? Why do we use it ?

Actually I wanna configure Kernel Debugging over Virtualized COM port. So what can I do next ?  please help me...
Note: Virtual Machine Management service  is running.

MAC addresses ofVirtual switches

I have the following lab environment:

1 server win2k12 r2 with hyper-v ( physical box )
1 server win2k12 dc ( virtual )
1 workstation win8 ( virtual )

I assigned the ip address 192.168.1.5 to the win8 machine and everything is okay and I am able to reach the internet.

I deleted the netwerk card and the added a new network card to the win8 machine.
I assigned the same IP address to it.

However, the computer is unreachable now.
If I recreate the virtual switch everything if okay.

I think it has something to do with the MAC address table of the virtual switch.
I think that it is linking the 192.168.1.5 IP to the old MAC address of the netwerk card before I deleted it.
How can I delete this cache and is there a way to read this cache?

Your help would be much appreciated.

Using NIC Teaming and a virtual switch for Windows Server 2012 host networking!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mOuoIWzmdE

Hi thanks for reading. Now I may well have my terminology incorrect here so I will try to explain  as best I can and apologies from the start.

It’s a bit of both Hyper-v and Server 2012R2.

I am setting up a lab with Server 2012 R2. I have several physical network cards that I have teamed called “HostSwitchTeam” from those I have made several Virtual Network Adaptors such as below examples.

New-VMSwitch "MgmtSwitch" -MinimumBandwidthMode weight -NetAdaptername "HostSwitchTeam" -AllowManagement $false

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Vswitch" -SwitchName "MgmtSwitch"

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name "Cluster" -SwitchName "MgmtSwitch"

When I install Hyper-V and it comes to adding a virtual switch during installation it only shows the individual physical network cards and the HostSwitchTeam for selection.  When installed it shows the Microsoft Network Multiplexor Driver as the only option. Is this correct or how does one use the Vswitch made above and incorporate into the Hyper-V so a weight can be put against it.

Still trying to get my head around Vswitches,VMNetworkadapters etc so somewhat confused as to the way forward at this time so I may have missed the plot altogether!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Mystery AVHD file and no snapshots lists in Hyper-v

$

Need some serious help here.

I was the victim of the runaway shapshot eating all the availble disk space last year - that was a fun 30 hours to fix.  I still hold the record of having a 400GB snapshot.  Snapshot are evil in production - never to be used again.

Anyway...

I have one virtualized exchange server and in Hyper-V mangare, there is no snapshots listed (this is good, since it is an Exchange server and it is in production).

But, we are running out of diskpace again.  I check the drive and there is a 151GB snapshot (which is active and being used by the Exchange server).  A AVHD file - your basic snapshot differential file.

So, it looks like this blight of snapshots is not completely gone.  How do I get rid of this snapshot?

I would like some suggestions before I start working on a production system.

Hyper-V Replication over Dedicated LAN and "is alive" checks over Corporate LAN

$

I am testing Hyper-V replication to see if it will be a suitable replacement for the ArcServer RHA product.  One thing I am struggling with is configuring the replication to use the dedicated LAN, but still have the host servers verify over the corporate LAN.

I have seen the blogs on how to use a dedicated route and editing the hosts file to get replication to use the dedicated LAN, but that also changes the LAN in which the host servers communicate.  It seems to me that if the corporate LAN were to go down on the master server, I wouldn't be able to fail over the virtual machines to the replica server without first having to connect into the master server through the dedicated LAN of the replica server to shut down the virtual machines.

I need to be able to fail over to the replica server if the corporate network connection on the master server drops without having to go through the extra steps of connecting into the master server first.

Is it possible for the two items to be separated?  Can I tell Hyper-V to replicate using one specific IP destination on the dedicated LAN and have the replica server check to see if the master is live over the corporate LAN?

Help Transferring License

Greetings,

I'm having to clean up a mess left by a former co-worker and need to know how to transfer a Server 2012 license.  My former co-worker used one of the Server 2012 license keys on a Hyper-V server, which I was told doesn't need one as long as it is solely used for Hyper-V.  Is there a way to transfer that license to a new install of Server 2012 within Hyper-V or am I SOL?

Thanks in advance!

Guest keeps on consuming all the dynamic memory

Software:

Host: Windows Server 2012 R2 x64 fully patched

Guest: Windows 8 Update 1 x64 (Fully Patched).

I've been experience this problem for a few months and really don't know where to go from here. After starting the specific guest that is having the issue it will happen anywhere between 3-7 days. The guest will consume almost all the memory. The only way i can log into the guest is with hyper-v manager. Remote Desktop will hang. Then when i log into the guest i can't bring up task manager or many things.  Every time i have to kill the vm and restart it. Last time i thought to keep process monitor up and running so i could inspect things. Well it happened today again. According the hyper-v manager the guest was consuming almost 24GB of memory:

here is the memory demand:

What's wierd is when i logged into the vm it was showing it only had 4GB of memory with 3.1GB used. There was hardly anything running other than a few services and they weren't using much memory. Quickly process explorer locked up on me. After logging in for say 5-10 minutes this always happens too. After trying to diagnose the for a few minutes it will appear i have rebooted the system because i will get the following:

but i definitly did not reboot. If i come back in 24 hours it will still be at the same spot. Again i have to kill the vm but the same vicious cycle will ensue. I'm at a loss how to diagnose this. I've tried to scour the event viewer but it hasn't helped. Sure i could just turn dynamic memory off or lower the upper threshold of the dynamic memory but i shouldn't have to do that. Thats really just masking the problem. The only default value of dynamic memory i changed was the "Startup Memory". I really don't want to rebuild the vm but what other options do i have here?

Best way to convert large number of VM's from VMWare 5 to Hyper-V 2012 R2?

As the Subject states. I'm looking for the best method to convert a large number of VM's from multiple VMware ESX 5.5 hosts to multiple Hyper-V 2012 R2 hosts. converting multiple VM's simultaneously would be ideal. Do you suggest VMM, Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter 2.0, Migration Automation Toolkit, Orchestrator, other???

Thanks!

SCVMM 2012 SP1 Virtual Switch on Cluster Node Disappears

$

0

I have been running into an interesting but an alarming issue with virtual switches. I have recently built a 4 node Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. I have built numerous 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V clusters before, so I am pretty familiar with the process. I have rebuilt my VMM due to software problems, and on this new cluster, I have configured the virtual switches with nic teaming on 2 of the virtual switches.

I have 4 clusters being managed by this VMM.. and this newly built cluster keeps losing all of the VMM virtual switch configurations, meaning if I go to properties on the problem host and click on virtual switches, its blank. Refresh host cluster flags all virtual machines in this cluster as "Unsupported Configuration," making the vm unmanageable via VMM.

Information (26844)
Virtual switch (Virtual Switch Name) is not highly available because the switch is not available in host (One of the Hyper-V Hosts).

Recommended Action

All virtual servers on that host still has connectivity, as all virtual switch configs are normal when looking at it with Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Manager..

The workaround is to evacuate the host using Failover Cluster Manager and reboot the host. Then refresh the host. Then refresh the VM's. I cannot consider this a 'workaround' as I cannot be rebooting my hyper-V hosts every week.. and migrating virtual servers constantly just for this reason. (DPM backups have a FIT with csv's if it tries to backup a vm on a same csv as another vm thats being migrated.)

I have been wrestling with this problem for a few weeks now. The cluster has been slicked and completely rebuilt.. Still same problems. Has ANYONE else out there seen this issue? Does ANYONE out there suggest a way to go about further troubleshooting this issue?
