No confirmation prompt when hitting save button on vm console

Why on earth is there no confirmation prompt when you hit the Save button on a hyper-v vm console. Today I was trying to click on the Media menu to insert the guest additions iso and had accidentally clicked the mouse button on the way up there which just so happened to be above the Save button and it just started saving instead of prompting me "Are you sure you want to save/pause this VM?"!!!!!!! Now the server has been saving for the last 15 minutes, this is ridiculous. There is a prompt for turning it off, why is there not a prompt for saving!!!!!!

WS2012R2: After installation of Hyper-V role - only 1 CPU core left?

$

Invocatio: No, I'm not confused with the graph in the task manager. No, I didn't change the msconfig settings.

---

Hi there,

I'm having the weirdest problem: After I set up a Windows Server 2012 R2 (HW specs below), install the Hyper-V role & reboot, the task manager will only show one physical core/two logical processors. CPU-Z doesn't recognize the cores either. The ressource monitor neither.

The device manager however will show all the cores. 4 cores/processors when HTT is deactivated & 8 cores/processors when HTT is activated. Intel VT & Intel VT-d are switched on in the BIOS/UEFI.
If I switch off Intel VT, I can't start any VM, as expected.
If I remove the Hyper-V role & reboot, I'll get all the cores/logical processors back.

System:
Core i7-4770 (non-K)
32 GB RAM
Mainboard MSI H87-G43 - BIOS up to date
2x2 TB Hitachi
Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard - up to date

What I tried:
-used different ISOs (Dreamspark/SPLA)
-switched between Standard & DataCenter
-used the same ISOs on another system (Core 2 Duo E8400): Here I have all the cores when Hyper-V is active

The activation status doesn't seem to matter.

So, did anyone ever hear from this? I'd be really glad for some answers or hints.

For completion: The setup is a bit non-conventional, as the same partition for the installation of the OS is the same partition where all the setup files are from.
Basically, I had to use a rescue Linux system to make a partition w/ fdisk and mark it as active, use the package ms-sys to write a Windows MBR to the hard drive, format the partition with mkfs.ntfs, copy the contents of a Server2012 ISO to this partition, boot from this partition (hence starting the setup) and installing the OS on the SAME partition. Therefore, there is no "100 MB partition" in front of the actual OS, but that's fine.
I don't think that this matters, but what do I know...

Hi All,

I have been trying to enable the Hyper-V role in server 2012R2 standard, but on restarting it fails to install, then recovers back to how it was. I've looked through the logs and found the following.

In the Setup Event log

Update Microsoft-Hyper-V-Offline of package Microsoft-Hyper-V-ServerEdition-Package failed to be turned on. Status: 0x800f0922.

In the CBS.log.

ReFS and other storage options

One in a while I update a page in storage on my IT site, when I discover in the nick of time that a candidate hard disk has an extraordinarily high failure rate.

So besides flakey hard disks, there are other problems with hard disks. Over the last 10 years I have had 3 die with 20 others still working

Storage Spaces works ok for smaller requirements but I am into computer chess where PB system are too small.

Now ReFS has some bells and whistles, but right now NTFS is still the mainstream file systems for Windows Server and Hyper-V

One thought is the gold master VHD files I might have for fresh installs of an operating system, ideally I would like those files to have gold plated integrity.

One thought came up, everybody's tables of disk reliability are imperfect, I censor my results with retirements of working disks, I do not know their complete service life

so given disks have maybe 10^14 bit error rate, this means every 12,500,000,000,000 bytes or 6 copies of my hard disk will be wrong.

this gets even lower as disks get bigger and bigger, and so far vendors have not make any effort to raise that value

solomon-reed codes can easily perk up reliability of any file

Hyper V over SMB does not work on non-Microsoft Samba servers

I want to use for Hyper V (2012 R2 Standard) over SMB. I tried to move a virtual machine from local storage over to the SMB share and receive the error: "Remote SMB share does not support resiliency."

I have verified the SMB share is SMB 3.0. According to Microsoft, this should be supported:

"Using Hyper-V with SMB has the following requirements:

One or more computers running Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2012 with the Hyper-V role installed. You can also use non-Microsoft file servers that implement the SMB 3.0 protocol."

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 34187.aspx

But according to others, this is an ongoing issue with Samba. (http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=119&t=77809)

Microsoft, is this supported or not? If so, what else can I try to get this to work?

Integrated Services act up when VM is part of domain?

Running Server 2012 R2 Datacenter on a HP Proliant 380p Gen8 (the HP was patched with the latest SPP)

I have created two templates running 2012 R2 Standard. (A Gen 1 and a Gen 2) The following scenario applies to machines made from both these templates.

All Oss are patched to current (as of Wed).

When the server is not part of the domain, and one selects shutdown within Hyper-V manager, the machines shut down with no issue. Fast. (You’ll see “shutting down 5%” then “Succeeded”)

However, when joined to the domain, and one shuts it down, the process is slower (You’ll see “shutting down 5%...10%...15%” etc. in 5% increments until…)

at 65% of shutdown integrated services clears from "Up to date" to ‘blank' - meaning states nothing. This is observed in the summary of the VM.

At 90% of shutdown the process hangs, then after some time the Heartbeat reports Lost Communication. This is observed in the summary of the VM.

One can not log into the server via console.

One is forced to turn off the VM, however when turned off the status goes to Shutdown Succeeded (this is different than a straight Turn Off…the process is ID’d as Turned Off.

The event logs on the guest are clean (not only within granular Applications and Services, but just reviewing the EventLog entries within System. As far as the OS is concerned, these are clean shutdowns (unless a Turn Off wasinitially initiated).

Confirmed integrated services are current (built into OS, but when I rerun it is reported up to date at 6.3.9600.16384.

Ran sfc /scannow on the guest, no issue reported.

same results if the guest server is connected to network or not.

Now, I have tested by removing the server from the domain and re-adding it back three separate times and the results are the same (in a workgroup no issue, when part of domain, the above occurs). The Host is within the domain. They are all on the same network. Should be noted, when joined to the domain, the domain functionality (shares, etc) function as expecte

Finding network adapter in guest

Hi, Im working on powershell automation for guest deployment.

I am creating new VMs in Hyperv and assigning 2 interfaces, one external and one internal. The external one allows the guest to use DHCP.

What I would like to know, if for instance I didnt have DHCP available, how could I find which guest NIC is connected to which vmswitch? The external switch is connected at vm creation and in the guest is called Ethernet 5, but when I create the second connection it gets called Ethernet 4. These names are arbitrary and I would like to know of there is a definitive way to gather such details?

Thanks a lot.

Fix a WiFi Hyper-V Switch

I am getting a "Failed while adding Virtual Ethernet switch connections"  when trying to establish a virtual switch over a WiFi connection which I had previously used.  The details say "Ethernet port {GUID} bind failed.  The requested resource is in use. (0x800700AA).  "

Uninstalling and reinstalling the WiFi adapter changed the value of the GUID but still same error message.

There is no vEthernet adapter showing in the adapter properties window. My assumption is that the adapter is hidden from view in the window and / or there is some binding stored in some xml files or registry keys someplace linked to the Virtual Switch that needs to be manually cleaned.  However, I have not yet found where these are.

Has anyone figured out a good way to resolve this issue?

Hyper-V+RemoteFX+RemoteApp

Heya.

I have a bare-metal Windows Server 2012 r2 machine with a Windows 8.1 Ent guest running in Hyper-V. Without the RemoteFX GPU added to the VM configuration, I can RemoteApp in with no problem. However, when I add the RemoteFX GPU I can RDP in normally (not RemoteApp), however when I try to run the RemoteApp RDP file (that worked fine without the GPU) it shows the "connecting" window for a split second, and then closes.

In the RdpCoreTS event logs there is an entry: "The disconnect reason is 0"

Let me know if there is any more information I can give.

How to Set HyperV NIC in Promiscuous Mode

Is there any way to set up a NIC on a virtual HyperV guest in promiscuous mode?
I want to try and run a web filtering product on a VM. Wireshark does not indicate that it is capturing all traffic.
I have my switch port mirrored already and it works with a regular box but not with the VM.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi there,

can anybody tell me how Hyper-V Replica Reverse Replication Wizard works only in Powershell after an unplanned Failover?

The state of my vm is "Failedover".

If I try to use the "Set-VMReplication -reverse -VMName $ReplicaVM2" command, I only receive the message " not possible in actual state".

But the wizard does it...

Hyper-V Guest Migration Ideas and Suggestions

$
0
0

So, I have an idea already from past migrations but a little different scenario here.  Would like to get some of communities feedback on what they would do in this situation.

Migration from Hyper-V 2008 R2 to Hyper-V 2012 R2.

  • Existing SAN just new carved out LUNs presented for better performance
  • Existing 2008 environment is a mixture of CSV's and Direct LUNs for VM guest
  • Will be converting VHD to VHDx on all guest VM's

My plan is to have the existing CSV's presented to the new 2012 R2 Environment and take advantage of the Cluster Migration Wizard. That should take care of all VM Guest on the 2008 environment for migration at least.  However, I still will need to move the guest to the new CSV's and also convert VHD to VHDx.

For the 10 or so VM Guest that are Direct LUN attached my plan was to do the old fashion Export from the old 2008 environment on to a CSV that is presented to both 2008 and 2012 environments.  Then import the Guest VM's within the 2012 environment.  Which then puts me to the same place I am with the above.  I will then need to migrate them onto the new CSV's and also convert VHD to VHDx format.

I also understand that the migration wizard will let you pick the CSV that you are migrating to. So I was thinking all I would have to do is convert the VHD to VHDx.  Please confirm if I am correct?

Anyway, would love to see feedback on other migrations.

Poor performance on VMs

Hi

I have a Hyper-V 2012 R2 server with 192gb RAM running @ 1800mhz, 2 x Xeon E2650 v2, and for VMs, a SATA 7200RPM disk (4tb, no RAID).

I'm running 70 or so VMs, all on, and I'm the only user of the system so no load (of course for things like SQL Server, it still runs timer jobs which access databases, etc). VMs are a mix of SQL Servers, ADFS, AD DS, cert authorities, Sharepoint, System Center, and lots more.

On all VMs, they are very choppy and jerky. Would this be a disk bottleneck? Memory CPU look good. If it is disk, what perf counters can I use to establish this?

I'm looking to get 2 X 4TB SAS disks (also 7200rpm) in RAID 0 or 1. Would this perform much better?

Thanks

Virtual server and Firewall

$

Hi all,

Sorry if this is a too basic question. I'm trying to understand how our system works as I'm not the one that set it up in the first place. The Firewall crashed today and needed rebooted. When connected to the the server it says "Kernel-Power" and ID 41 so to me it sounds like the server shut down unexpectedly but I'm not sure. When the Firewall was rebooted everything was working fine again. So I have several questions that I'm thinking of. How can I figure out what really happened? Did the server shut down or was it just the firewall? Is it possible that the server (or client computers) sent information through the firewall, the firewall's cache got fully loaded and couldn't give a response and because the server didn't get a response it rebooted and the firewall crashed? Sounds unlikely, doesn't it. I maybe should say that when the firewall was down, as I said, I could access the server through RDC but the firewall was completely inaccessible so I had to press the physical power button to restart the Firewall. And the last week the network overall has been going very slow (which I tried to resolve yesterday by rebooting the routers that we have and that seemed to work).

Thankful for any ideas!

What components of VM are lost after its migration from one physical host to another?

Hi, I found this post very helpful for me, it is very easy to understand about the live VM migration. I have a confusion regarding VM migration that if any VM is migrated from one physical host to another what components of VM (vCPU, vBIOS, vRAM, vHD, vNIC, OS, Apps) will be changed?

Kindly help me to understand that:

1.Will Operating System running on VM be changed? 2. Will BIOS and Boot Loader information be changed?

Thanks Looking forward for your response.

I've found conflicting recommendations online, what is the best practice?

Hi Team ,

I am using Blade server with Two Broadcom BCM57800 NetXtream 10 G ports . Both Network card configured in one team with Switch independent and Hyper-v Port configuration using Windows Native teaming.

I upgraded the firmware driver of network card to the latest level and then after Hyper-v Team stop responding.

i am using Single virtual Switch with one vNIC so hyper-v can talk to mgmt LAN on Vlan X.

as an work around i break the team and configure one nic for Mgmt IP  and other for VDItraffic (Virtual Switch)

please let me know if any one face similar issue and able to resolved it.

Thanks
