I have two physical servers ( hyper V 2008 R2) , 2 node, 45 VM's and I would like to perform maintenance, what is the best procedure for shutdown the whole cluster and rebooting all the cluster back online !

Regards,

Hyper - V Windows 2012DC, Performance of guest machine is very poor. All allocated RAM is already under utilisation at start up.

Hi Experts,

Greetings!

I have created Hyper - V host on Windows server 2012 DC. (256GB RAM is available on host)

I created a windows 7 x64 bit sp1 host with following memory allocation,

Start up memory - 1024MB

Enabled dynamic memory

Minimum RAM - 512 MB

Maximum RAM - 8192 MB

Memory Buffer - 20%

Memory Weight - Medium

Latest update of Integration services is installed.

Now, When I start guest machine and login into it, It is showing 70% of memory allocation is already in use and performing any operation causes delay (Response time is poor) . Launch of MS-Word or MS-Excel takes time.

How Can I solve this problem? Is dynamic memory allocation actually working?

Please Guide.

Can't use all memory for VM

Hi!

I have Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 with 16 Gb RAM. I created two VM with 7162 Mb of fixed memory on each. But i can't start both of them. When i tried start second vm i got out of memory error. Why?

PS C:\Users\Administrator> ( Get-WMIObject Win32_OperatingSystem -ComputerName localhost ).FreePhysicalMemory
8184452
PS C:\Users\Administrator> start-vm oldBSD
start-vm : 'oldBSD' could not initialize. (Virtual machine ID 05EA5A45-601F-4CC0-8770-62B97571D8F8)
Not enough memory in the system to start the virtual machine oldBSD with ram
size 7168 megabytes. (Virtual machine ID 05EA5A45-601F-4CC0-8770-62B97571D8F8)
The server ran out of available memory.

Max memory value for second machine is 5740Mb, but with it i have

PS C:\Users\Administrator> ( Get-WMIObject Win32_OperatingSystem -ComputerName
localhost ).FreePhysicalMemory
2243312
How i can use all memory? My idea is use 7 Gb of memory for each machine and 1.5-2 Gb for host.

Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Hyper-V Role Slow login

Hello,

We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 with Hyper-V role, it seems that every time we reboot the server, and after CTRL-ALT-DELETE and login, it takes longer and longer to show the desktop. Any reason why? I thought maybe applying this updatehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/982210 but it does not show for service pack 1. Can anyone help why is it slow, we have 4 hyper-v vms? Thank you

VM communication fail on HP broadcom network adapter

Hi All,

I have HP DL380 servers with Broadcom network adapters. I have successfully created the team and selectDynamic as the load balancing mode. This team has selected for the virtual switch. My VMs couldn't communicate to each other. sometimes it communicates with the physical host and sometimes not.

For the troubleshooting purpose i have selected a single adapter as the stand by mode. After that sometimes VM can communicate among each other and sometimes not.

I have found the below article for the same issue.

http://www.aidanfinn.com/?p=16876

i would like to know is there any solution for the issue. Also would like to know is this a bug from Microsoft or the Broadcom?

Loss of connection with storage

Hi,

I have 3 IBM server hosts (Server 2012) and 2 ds3500 SANs connected through fiber channel through a switch. The VMs and SANS are clustered. The MPIO setting is Active/Optimized and Standby for the controllers (seems to be required for the ds3500). The last two times the hosts rebooted (during Cluster Aware Updating) the Active/Optimized and Standby settings got reversed for some of the CSVs and connection was lost. That caused some of the VMs to fail. (No failover.) I had to go into Disk Management on all the hosts and reset the Active/Optimized and Standby paths, then restart the VMs. Anyone have any idea why the MPIO settings are not sticking? Thanks.

Data Exchange Integration Services - High CPU Usage Penalty Per VM.

This issue was found because of this issue: "http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/2aa0b53d-fb3d-4e63-ab76-58e72462fb1a/wmi-high-cpu-usage-on-hyperv-vms-related-to-data-exchange-integration-service?forum=winserverhyperv"

The fix didn't seem to work for me. Anyway here is my main issue.

Please see: http://i.imgur.com/w1poacd.png

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Is 5% CPU usage from the Data Exchange service just to tell the OS Type and IP address acceptable?

5% from a single VM might not seem like a lot but you do that over 50 VM's on a Host and it adds up quickly.

It seems rather aggressive.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Background info:

This is a Gen 2 2012 R2 U1 fully patched VM on a 2012 R2 U1 Fully Patched Hyper-V Host.

Hyper-V Test Replication

Hi

We are running Server 2012 (not R2) Hyper-V environment and have a question about testing Replication.

I have a problem where I have a very large snapshot on our SQL Server.  I made a thread about it (which was answered) here, but on going to delete the snapshot realised that there was no delete option.  Upon further investigation I noticed that the snapshot was the "initial replication snapshot" from when I set up Hyper-V replica back in January 2014.

I have concocted a plan to merge this snapshot with the original VHD (for the OS) and simply create new VHDs for the database and logs files and copy the files across to them.

Before I do this I want to test Replica has been working OK (Replication appears normal in Hyper-V Manager) by doing a test failover and checking that I can access the databases OK.

Is there any reason that the replica server may have been affected by the initial replica snapshot not being deleted and can anyone think of any reason why I should not do a test failover in such circumstances?

Many thanks

Hyper-V access share on a domain

We have our first Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 server setup. This is not standard Server 2012. It's Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 so there's no UI to speak of. This is our first attempt to connect a Hyper-V server to our LAN.

We need to keep this server on a Workgroup and not make it a Domain member as it will be used as a demo server for clients. We need to be able to access a share on a domain, however. We have NOT been able to do this. Here's the scenario: ISO shares are on the CorpDom domain on \\ServerDC1\ISO-Shares. We can "see" the ServerDC1\ISO-Shares shared folder but we get denied access to it.

We need to be able to access this for different clients so it's important we understand how we need to connect this Hyper-V server to anyone's domain network and access a shared folder.

To sum it up: Hyper-V1 on Workgroup needs to be able to access a shared folder on server \\ServerDC1 in the CorpDom (or any other) domain.

Can someone shed some light on this? we want to get our first Hyper-V server setup and running a VM or two :-)

Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-v (clustered) to alternate 2008 R2 Hyper-v Cluster virtual server migration

hey all!

quick question, im looking for a solution to minimize downtime, i dont care if I have to use third party tools to purchase, but basically i am looking to do the following  - Move 2008 R2 Clustered Hyper-v Virtual servers to a different 2008 R2 Hyper-v cluster, in an effort to perform some consolidation, and the most importantly, minimize downtime

cluster details below

Both clusters are Hyperv R2 2008 server. both are san connected, on the same fabric, one lun per virtual server, both clusters existing on the same SAN, all CSV's i have a gigabit management network between the clusters,

Basically i am looking to move a bunch of virtualized servers, some how, some way, while they are powered on, or limit it to a couple reboots, i am not interested in shutting them down and doing exports across the gigabit network, or really between san luns, been there done that and not wanting 2 hours of downtime per virtual server

looking to see if someone has used any third party or microsoft tools that might fit this task!

Cheers guys!

Hyper-V 2012 R2, integration services issue on multiple VMs

Hello,

I came to you because we encounter a technical issue on one of our Hyper-V (2012 R2).

Our backup (Veeam backup in last version) are still failing with error :

Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and integration components version)

After checking integration service states of those VMs on the Hyper-V, we get this result :

Get-VM | ft Name, IntegrationServicesVersion

Name                                                        IntegrationServicesVersion
----                                                        --------------------------

Get-VMIntegrationService xxx-vmm02 | Select Name,OperationalStatus

Heartbeat                                                           {Ok, Ok}
Key-Value Pair Exchange                                  {LostCommunication}
Shutdown                                                           {LostCommunication}
VSS                                                                     {LostCommunication}
Guest Service Interface                                     {LostCommunication}

I already try to disable, then enable the operationalStatus :

Disable-VMIntegrationService -VMName MyVM -Name VSS,Shutdown,"Key-Value Pair Exchange"

Enable-VMIntegrationService -VMName MyVM -Name VSS,Shutdown,"Key-Value Pair Exchange"

The status is OK, but If I retry my backup I have the same error.

So, is there a way to reinstall integration service component without rebooting ?

Many thanks for your help.

Error - The request could not be performed due to an error from the I/O device

Hello,

I have a Hyper-V server with a few virtual machines.

The host runs Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V.

VMs are Windows Server 2012R2 Generation 2 and Windows Server 2003 Generation 1.

All VMs running on VHDX on local host disks, no raid, no storage. Most VMs run on dedicated disks.

I am having the following error when I demand large amount of I/O on VMs:. "The request could not be performed due to an error from the I/O device"

This error happens when I run robocopy which requires large amount of writing, or on a SQL 2014 VM which also requires many reads and writes.

Whenever this error occurs, the replicas of the VMs require resynchronization and the MSSQL service stops.

Analyzing the events of the Host, I find the following warning multiple times: "The IO operation at logical block address 0x31fd01 for Disc 4 (PDO name: \ Device \ 0000005d) was retried." Disc 4 is where SQL runs.

Is there any special configuration that must be done to avoid these errors?

Thank you!
Rafael

Move Virtual Machine Storage - Source Disk not deleted

0

Have just performed a test on a non-production machine.  To all intents and purposes the procedure worked ok.

The disk appeared in the new location, and the machine was still running and the cluster manager indicated source disk in correct position.  However, I was led to believe and expected the source disk to be deleted when complete.  This didn't occur and I can't see any errors etc.  Indeed I've physically moved the vhdx disk just in case and the machine in question is still working fine.

Any ideas why this should have happened?

I'm running a Windows 2012 R2 HyperV Cluster.

Cheers

Ian

hi friends

i have encountered an strange problem.

in my servers with windows server 2008 R2 full installation (not server core) & also win 2012 R2 full installation, when in my virtual machines (VM OS = win 2008 R2) , in disk management snap-in i convert basic to dynamic, system normally boots after restarts & no problem occurs.

but i have another server on which i have installed "windows hyper-v server 2012 R2" which is core edition. on it i also have virtual machines. in these VMs when i convert their disk from basic to dynamic, then after restart system remains in the black screen & never boots.

any help please

thanks in advanced

No confirmation prompt when hitting save button on vm console

Why on earth is there no confirmation prompt when you hit the Save button on a hyper-v vm console. Today I was trying to click on the Media menu to insert the guest additions iso and had accidentally clicked the mouse button on the way up there which just so happened to be above the Save button and it just started saving instead of prompting me "Are you sure you want to save/pause this VM?"!!!!!!! Now the server has been saving for the last 15 minutes, this is ridiculous. There is a prompt for turning it off, why is there not a prompt for saving!!!!!!

Hyper-V and Linux VM Network Card Issues

I am facing the issue on the network card Please help me in this regards.

I have Windows Server 2012 on which Hyper-V is installed. We are maintaining the VM (Virtual Machine) on Hyper-V. I have got One VM with "Oracle Unbreakable Linux 6.5" on which my Oracle Production server is running. We have 3 Hyper V Servers with clustering. When I migrate my Oracle VM from one Host  to another Host then "Oracle Unbreakable Linux" forgot the old Network card and pick up a new one. Because of this all the network services are down then I have to reconfigure the old network card and then start the production.

Please could any one tell me why Linux is behaving this, and what is the solution?

Hi,

I have now cluster Hyper-v on  Windows 2008R2. We are using Starwind installed on Windiws Server to configure virtual Storage.

I'm looking to upgrade to hyper-v cluster Windows 2012 R2 and keep my JBOD disque and delete Starwind.

Any Idea about this subject.

How can i design my new infrastructure to ovoid starwind. it's possible with Windows 2012 R2.?

Connecting external computer to the virtual environment

Hi,

I am using Windows Server 2012 - Hyper-V Host with 2 virtual instances inside, VM1 and VM2. The VM1 role is RRAS server and VM2 is a Database server. The remote users connect to RRAS server (through PPTP VPN) to be able to access the Database server.

I wanted to add a physical server (Linux) and configure and connect it in same segment as the VM2 or Database Server.

My question is how will I connect the Physical Server to the virtual network so that users will use the same RRAS server to access  the Linux Box.

Appreciate your help.

How to manage a Hyper-V 2012R2 Host from Windows 7?

0
0

AFAIK This is the official Hyper-V Manager for Windows 7: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7887 it explicitly lists Hyper-V versions up to 2008R2, there is no mention of 2012 or 2012R2, and from trying to connect to my new Hyper-V 2012R2 I can confirm that it doesn't want to work.

From reading the docs on Hyper-V 2012/2012R2 remote management I've come to the conclusion that its only possible with Windows 8+ or Server 2012+ , but it cannot be used to manage Hyper-V 2008/2008R2...

Someone please tell me that this is just one big mistake on my part and that the product owner for Hyper-V at Microsoft is not this stupid...
