I have a 72G RAM Dedicated Server with 8 Core processor

Hi everyone,

I'm here to ask about my difficulties regarding my hyper-v on my dedicated server.

Here are the specs of my box below:

2xL5630
72GB DDR3 RAM
1TB HDD
10TB @ 100mbit
IPMI

I used Windows SERVER 2012 r2 in the main server and all of the RDP's

And i have created 21 partition on it (RDP) giving 2G (2048 MB) of RAM each RDP and i made 8 core each as a processor... and i run an automation software like auto clicker with few instances. Now my question is how can i manage the RAM to get the most out of it without crashing my server, here is my outline questions below:

1. How much RAM i would spare on the main server

2. How much RAM i can allocate to each RDP ( 21 RDPs)

3. And i have a noob question with using hyper V , is there anyway i can give anyone access to each RDP as i'm planning to provide such service to create Windows VPS as a seller.

Like logging in using only the IP provided and the pass to connect to the RDP provided... seems like accessing only to the Hyper V server creates a ton of lag as of my experienced.

Any advices and suggestions is gladly appreciated.

Newbie,

Daphne

How to backup VM in HyperV (Windows Server 2008 R2)

Hello,

Beginner's question: How to backup my VMs on an external USB disk?

NB: I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2. It's a test machine, don't care with downtime. I want to backup only the VM (VHD files and VM configuration, not the whole server)

Thanks

Hyper-V Access Denied Error

Hi

We I have several Hyper-V 3.0 servers and am trying to manage the virtual machines using Hyper-V Manager on my Windows 8 Pro workstation

When I try to connect to a Hyper-V server I get the error message "Access Denied.  Unable to establish communication between <host> and <client>"

There are plenty of posts on TechNet and otherwise explaining how to fix this by editing Access Permissions of the Anonymous Logon via Component Services.  I have done this and am still getting the error message.

Additionally I have seen some posts saying to flush the DNS on client & host but this also has not worked for me.

Does anybody have any other suggestions on how to resolve this error?

Many thanks

Very Large Snapshot

Hi

We are using Hyper-V on Server 2012, we have 4 nodes in a cluster and the machines are kept on clustered storage.

During some maintenance on one of our SQL servers I noticed that the VM had been snapshotted way back in January 2014.  This has led to some very large snapshots.

The VM has 3 disks - an OS disk (running Server 2008R2 with SQL Server 2008R2), a disk for the DBs and a disk for the SQL transaction logs.  ALL disks have large (70GB+) snapshots against them.

I don't know why this machine was snapshotted - I don't remember ever doing it myself (and certainly from experience using VM Ware Snapshots in the past steer well clear of these things).

My main concern is not only are they large snapshots but the VM is a busy SQL server.  We migrated from VM Ware a year ago and I have never used Hyper-V snapshots, a bit of research shows up what I would expect (don't use for production unless necessary, don't use for DB/AD/Exchange servers etc).

So my question to the community is what course of action should I take?  Delete the snapshots and hope for the best?

Our DBs are backed up every 15mins and the OS is replicated offsite so if it went wrong then recovery is possible (but not painless!)

Does anyone have any experience of such a situation?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

2008R2 Virtual machine shutting down unexpected on Hyper-V 2012 server

I have a problem where one of my 2008 R2 virtual servers are shutting down unexpected every Friday at more or less the same time. This has happen 2 Fridays in a row now and the time is 13:01:30 and 13:01:10. I did some investigation on the event viewer and it tells me the following: (Error) The previous system shutdown at 01:01:10 PM on ‎2014/‎08/‎01 was unexpected.  Event ID: 6008 which I have goggled and did not find much on this ID?    I also found the following event more or less the same time as the first one: (Critical) The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. Event ID: 41.  In most posts it looks like if it could be hardware related? But how do I justify this on a virtual machine?

Some Infrastructure background: It is a 2008 R2 virtual server running on 2012 Hyper-V, 2012 server. SCVMM is not configured so all administration is done through Hyper-V manager. The virtual machine is backup up by Symantec backup exec and the Full backup only start at 23:00pm night time. No scheduled shut-downs are configured and all servers are running on UPS power, the virtual server are also configured to boot up automatically after any failure. But in this case the server is completely shut-down and I have to manually start the server up again.

I hope there are somebody who can give some guidance on my problem?

Regards

SCVMM 2012 SP1 Virtual Switch on Cluster Node Disappears

I have been running into an interesting but an alarming issue with virtual switches. I have recently built a 4 node Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. I have built numerous 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V clusters before, so I am pretty familiar with the process. I have rebuilt my VMM due to software problems, and on this new cluster, I have configured the virtual switches with nic teaming on 2 of the virtual switches.

I have 4 clusters being managed by this VMM.. and this newly built cluster keeps losing all of the VMM virtual switch configurations, meaning if I go to properties on the problem host and click on virtual switches, its blank. Refresh host cluster flags all virtual machines in this cluster as "Unsupported Configuration," making the vm unmanageable via VMM.

Information (26844)
Virtual switch (Virtual Switch Name) is not highly available because the switch is not available in host (One of the Hyper-V Hosts).

Recommended Action

All virtual servers on that host still has connectivity, as all virtual switch configs are normal when looking at it with Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Manager..

The workaround is to evacuate the host using Failover Cluster Manager and reboot the host. Then refresh the host. Then refresh the VM's. I cannot consider this a 'workaround' as I cannot be rebooting my hyper-V hosts every week.. and migrating virtual servers constantly just for this reason. (DPM backups have a FIT with csv's if it tries to backup a vm on a same csv as another vm thats being migrated.)

I have been wrestling with this problem for a few weeks now. The cluster has been slicked and completely rebuilt.. Still same problems. Has ANYONE else out there seen this issue? Does ANYONE out there suggest a way to go about further troubleshooting this issue?

Server 2012 r2 Evaluation copy asking for license key?

So, I'm an old dog trying to learn new tricks - the newest trick being to install Server 2012 R2 Standard with Hyper-V role. After a bit of fumbling around (good story for another time) I have managed to make it to the point of installing the OS onto the virtual machine I created. Sweet. My understanding from extensive internet research is that I should now use an ISO image of Server 2010 R2 (an ISO of the Evaluation Copy it seems being universally suggested), for installing the OS to the virtual machine and then subsequently change the license key to my OEM license key using theslmgr -rearm command. OK, if that is correct I can deal with it. But I have top get it installed first. I have downloaded the following ISO from Technet:

9600.16384.WINBLUE_RTM.130821-1623_X64FRE_SERVER_SOLUTION_EN-US-IRM_SSSO_X64FRE_EN-US_DV5

The setup installation starts up fine, but immediately presents a prompt screen for entering the product key. Huh? I thought evaluation copies did not require a product key to perform the installation. It will not accept my OEM product key, so I am stumped. Do I have the wrong ISO? I did try a couple of other copies/versions, but they conk out because Windows generates  errors saying something to the effect that they are not the right version for the SCSI Synthetic Adapter. So is there maybe some other ISO's I should be trying? Or, is there some place I am supposed to request a key for the ISO eval copy I have? And, if at some point I am able to get the evaluation copy installed, is my thinking correct about using my OEM key used to activate the physical host to change the evaluation installation into a regular installation? Or, should be  burning an ISO of my OEM installation disk to install from and use my OEM key directly to activate that when doing setup to the VM?

SCVMM 2012 R2 agent update stopped all VMs on Hyper-v host

Hello

we have a 2012 R2 environment ( 5 nodes ) and SCVMM 2012 R2 RU3 .

we just deployed RU3 and as part of the update ; we initialized a agent update through scvmm fabric console.

Agent update was smooth on 3 hosts but it failed on two hosts . we got an error basically saying that SCVMM was
not able to launch installer. Tried one more time and this time job was stuck .

a few minutes later ; I noticed that the entire host was not responding and all VMs had stopped .

attempted to reboot ; made it even worse because hyper-v management server went into a funky state and stayed
in "stopping mode " ; eventually servers were rebooted . after the reboot I was able to re-associate the agents and they seem to be updated !
it was a scary scenario and caused some outages .. any insights ?

Need to enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Hyper-V Server 2012 core

Hi, I am now to Hyper-V Server Core. Because my network is restricted to one IP address, which is the Hyper-V's host IP, guest VMs need to have "Internal network", sharing the host network.

I need to enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the Hyper-V's host but the server core does not have any utility for me to set Internet Sharing. Starting "SharedAccess" service has failed also.

Please help!

Windows 2012 STD with Hyper-V cluster using CSV

Hi,

I got a two node cluster connected to my iSCSI storage. Everything work well.

I cloned the CSV volumes and presented it to one of the nodes, windows OS will not allow me to mount the volume ?

After some reading, I could only attain this if I first remove the CSV volume from the cluster using cluster manager.

Question:

1. I plan to purchase a second storage and replicate the Volumes containing my CSV volumes to a second site.

On the second site, I will have different servers, this servers are not part of a cluster. They are all stand alone servers.

Can I mount those CSV volume on my servers on the DR site.

In Simple terms, can I replicate my CSV volumes via SAN replication hardware technology and mount those volumes on a standalone server.

Thanks,

Paul

VM replication crashes on 10G network

Hi all

We have 2 HP servers (2012 R2 GEN1 VMs) on the same LAN running RAID 6 on a 10G network.

Live migration works perfectly at speeds of around 350M.

Hyper V replication runs a little slower and keeps crashing around the 600GB limit. We can resync again and eventually the replication finishes. Our VMs are 11TB in size.

Microsoft say it is a network issue, but my question is why should the replication fail when live migration doesn't? We have also set the resync option to happen immediately, but it never does.

We have tried this with compression and without, but the result is the same.

Thanks for your comments!

Scott

Dynamic LBFO Load Balancing mode causing issues

Hi,

We`re running a couple of virtual machines with the BIG-IP Virtual Edition in a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster.
These virtual machines have had problems where traffic sent through the virtual machines doesn`t get through due to the MAC Addresses of the physical team NICs being replaced with the Mac Address from the team member actually used to transmit the packet.

Reference:

Windows Server 2012 R2 NIC Teaming (LBFO) Deployment and Management

Blog post - Server 2012 Hyper-V / NIC Team Oddity

One of the comments in the blog-post states what we are seeing:

The reason for the MAC Address switching you’re seeing is that Server 2012 in some cases will replace the source MAC address on Ethernet frames with the MAC Address from the team member actually used to transmit the packet. The reason for this is that if it always kept the MAC Address intact, the switch would throw alarms for “MAC flapping”, i.e. seeing a given MAC Address bouncing back and forth between switch ports.

When we changed the Load Balancing mode from Dynamic to Hyper-V port, the problem was resolved.

Is it possible to solve this problem while still using Dynamic as the Load Balancing mode? Would LACP instead of Switch independent teaming mode solve the problem?

All Virtual Servers showed Offline

One morning one of our consultants logged into one of our clients server to setup a local user on a Win7 VM that we have setup by Hyper-V.  He noticed that all of our other Virtual Servers we all offline.  He had to reassign the RAM and then switch them back on again.

I have viewed all the event logs and found nothing that indicates they were shut off or that anyone had shut them off. Has anyone else encountered this phenomenon or could point me in the direction as to check why they these VS shut off by themselves?

Hi Team ,

I am using Blade server with Two Broadcom BCM57800 NetXtream 10 G ports . Both Network card configured in one team with Switch independent and Hyper-v Port configuration using Windows Native teaming.

I upgraded the firmware driver of network card to the latest level and then after Hyper-v Team stop responding.

i am using Single virtual Switch with one vNIC so hyper-v can talk to mgmt LAN on Vlan X.

as an work around i break the team and configure one nic for Mgmt IP  and other for VDItraffic (Virtual Switch)

please let me know if any one face similar issue and able to resolved it.

Thanks
