I have a Hyper-V guest that is hung up at logging off and have no access to that server?

Connect to Hyper-V Server 2012 from Win8.1 RPC Error?

$

0

I have installed Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 on my server and I am running Windows 8.1 on my client computer. Both are in the workgroup WORKGROUP and not part of a domain. I am trying to set up VM's on the server. I have set up a user account on my client computer and added that to the server as an administrator account.

When I open HyperV Manager on my client computer and try to connect to my HyperV server I get the error message 'An error occurred while attempting to connect to server "HyperV". Check that the virtual machine management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server. Cannot connect to the RPC service on computer 'HyperV'. Make sure your HyperV service is running.'

On the server Remote Management is enabled and Remote Desktop is enabled.

Any ideas what else I need to do to connect to the server in Hyper-V Manager and start adding virtual machines?

Thanks for any help!

Unable to activate Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 pro x64

Hi there,

I tried to activate Hyper-V on my desktop :

1. Add/Remove Features

2. Add Hyper-V, and all subsets

3. Click OK.

4. Click Restart when prompted.

5. Computer will reboot and then work on configuring features.  I got the error message "Unable to add feature...".

My configuration :

MotherBoard : ASRock Z77 pro3

Processor : Intel I5 3570k

RAM : 8 Gb

OS: Windows 8.1 pro x64OEM fully activated and updated.

I checked with intel processor identification utility, and my processor support SLAT (VT -x) and Intel virtualisation. I checked too with some tools (coreinfo, systeminfo), everything is ok..).

I updated my BIOS and activated the Virtualisation option.

No way to make it work..

Can anyone help me ?

Hyper-V replaced my OS?

Long story short, I'm an IT major at college, and this is my first year. We're learning DOS on MSVPC, but since I have 8.1, I have to use hyper-v. I downloaded it, and it installed whilst I was eating dinner. I came back, and it was booted in Hyper-V Server 2012. If I restart or anything, it just brings me back to Server 2012. I tried a system restore, but it says it can't run on my software. There's only so much I can do from the command prompt, as that's all that shows up. If someone could tell me how to revert to my OS, it'd be much appreciated.

Hyper-V - Virtual Machine issue

Good evening all

Im currently setting up a new test environment in Hyper-V and I've hit a problem. Here is my current setup.

- Virtual Machine running Server 2012 R2 running as a DC
- I have setup an 'External' switch so that my desktop shares my internet connection with my DC
- I have configured my DC to use a static IP address of 192.168.0.20, subnet 255.255.255.0 and Default Gateway is 192.168.0.1 (Which is my sky router) - so my VM can get out to the internet.
- I have also told my VM to use the following DNS Server address 192.168.0.20 (which is itself)

So here is a quick screen shot of my settings

I have setup my DHCP scopes which are working fine and as expected.

The issue I am facing is that I cannot access the internet. If I set my VM to automatically obtain both an IP address and DNS Server then I can access the web ok on my DC. - I'm guessing that I need to do something in DNS.

I hope someone can help.

CentOS 6.5 / Linux VM KVP IP can't be shown on Hyper-V Manager after querying its KVP/IP information on Hyper-V host several times

Hello

I am using a CentOS 6.5 VM (Linux kernel 2.6.32-431) with Hyper-V KVP daemon installed, and I periodically query its IP (via using WMI or Powershell to query its KVP information) to manage it.

However, after querying its IP (KVP) for several times, its IPcan’t be queried or shown on Hyper-V Manager anymore.

I attached a simple KVP query Powershell script as the follows, and this problem can be reproduced in couple minutes if you run two instances with this script at the same time.

$VMName = $args[0]
write-host "$VMName"

filter Import-CimXml
{
    $CimXml = [Xml]$_
    $CimObj = New-Object -TypeName System.Object
    foreach ($CimProperty in $CimXml.SelectNodes("/INSTANCE/PROPERTY"))
    {
        if ($CimProperty.Name -eq "Name" -or $CimProperty.Name -eq "Data")
        {
            $CimObj | Add-Member -MemberType NoteProperty -Name $CimProperty.NAME -Value $CimProperty.VALUE
        }
    }
    $CimObj
    $CimObj = $null
}

for ($i=1 ; $i -le 10000 ; $i++) {
    $a = Get-Date
    write-host "$i - Time: " $a.ToLocalTime()
    $vm = Get-WmiObject -Namespace root\virtualization\v2 -Query "Select * From Msvm_ComputerSystem Where ElementName='$VMName'"
    $vm.ElementName
    $vmkvp = Get-WmiObject -Namespace root\virtualization\v2 -Query "Associators of {$vm} Where AssocClass=Msvm_SystemDevice ResultClass=Msvm_KvpExchangeComponent"
    $vmkvp.GuestIntrinsicExchangeItems | Import-CimXml
}

By the way, I found the following patches and gave them a try, but the problem still remains (And the generation 2 Ubuntu 14.04 with Linux kernel 3.13 also has this problem).

 - Patch "Drivers: hv: util: Fix a bug in the KVP code" has been added to the 3.14-stable tree

 - Drivers: hv: vmbus: Fix a bug in the channel callback dispatch code

P.S. Generation 2 CentOS 7 VM (Linux kernel 3.10.0-123) also has this problem, but Windows VM is ok

Thanks,

Paul

Need advice for starting a Managed Cloud Service for Small Businesses

$

I hope this is in the right forum.  I have done a lot of research and searching but havent found anything that specifically answers, in total, what I am wanting to accomplish.  I live in a small town and want to start a Managed Cloud Services for small to small-medium business in my area (2-30 users for each business).  I want to market this to have businesses replace their in-house server(s) to virtual ones I would host in a local Data Center with my own equipment that I would maintain.  I am just starting off so I don't have any clients I do this for currently, but I get asked about this frequently.  I want to run a 2012 R2 Domain Controller and a Hyper-V 2012 R2 server.  The virtual servers I will host are going to be for AD, RDS, FTP, and files.  Software examples that people are going to be using these virtual servers for are Quickbooks, Sage Accounting, Remote Desktop or RemoteApp, custom CRM or small database software, Office 2013, etc.  No Exchange currently but will probably configure something for that in the future (maybe run 1-3 virtually for now if someone asks, but will only do it if the user base is fairly small ~under 10 users).  I only have 1 static IP to work with over a 100Mbps connection up and down.

For hardware, I am figuring something along the lines of this:
(1) 1U, single CPU w/2-4 cores, 8GB, 2x73GB SAS 10k RAID 1, Dual PSU, running Windows Server 2012 R2
Domain Controller
(1) 2U, 2x 8-core Xeon ~2.6Ghz, 80GB RAM, 8x600GB SAS 15k in Raid 10 for Storage (VHDX files, etc), RAID 1 small Basic drives (or USB stick) for OS, Dual PSU, Quad GB Nic which I can use for load balancing/teaming, Hyper-V 2012 R2
Hyper-V Virtual Server
(1) GB Unmanaged Network Switch & (1) Cisco 5510 Firewall

Most of my questions are about the best way to configure this.  I am planning on managing my Hyper-V from the physical Domain Controller server.  Each virtual server will have RDS & (possibly) AD services on a single server.
1)I want to replicate the physical Domain Controller.  Should I get another server or just virtualize the replica in Hyper-V?  I understand that if the Hyper-V goes down, so does my DC replica.
2)Should I use my Domain Controller to manage ALL users on each virtual Server, by creating separate Organizational Units for each business?
3)Should I setup my domain controller with Hyper-V management and then each Virtual Server I setup be a separate domain (Ex. mydomain.local, business1.local, business2.local, etc)?  Each one has no connection to any other, completely seperate.  Or should I do subdomains (business1.mydomain.local).
4)What I have read is that Subdomains are a pain to manage with user rights, etc.  I want to keep each server complete separated from one another over a network connection, I suppose the VLan through Hyper-V options do this?  I dont want wondering users to stumble upon another businesses files (I know they would probably be prompted with a login for that business/domain).
5)For each virtual server, I want to create and have an HTTP subdomain point to that server from my domain name. (Ex: business1.mydomain.com, business2.mydomain.com, etc.)  I want them to be able to have access to only their RemoteApps or be able to type that address in their Remote Desktop program as the host name.  This would be for viewing the RemoteApp login page and RemoteApps for that business over HTTP/S through a browser.
6)If I do not have separate DC's in each virtual and my main DC manages each one, is their a way to connect up each companies RemoteApps using a single site that only shows what they are assigned to based upon their login? (Ex. http://login.mydomain.com which then shows that user what they are assigned on their own virtual server)
7)Since each business will use the same ports for RemoteApp (443) & RDC (3389 unless I change it), how would I setup the subdomains to point to their correct server and not overlap for mess with any of the other servers since its all over 1 static WAN IP for all servers.  Thats why I figured setting up IIS subdomains would solve this.
8)For backups or Hyper-V replication, is it better to have software that backs up the ENTIRE Hyper-V server (Acronis Advanced Backup for Hyper-V) as well as replication or just backups?  Or should I do separate file backup on each virtual with a replica?  Can a replica be a slower server since its just a backup? (Ex. 1x 8 core, 80GB, 8x600GB 10k SAS)
9)For the servers that will be using FTP, can I again rely on the subdomains to determine which server to connect to on port 21 without changing each FTP servers ports?  I just want each business/person to type in the subdomain for their business and it connect up to their assigned FTP directory over port 21.
10)If the physical DC manages DNS for all Virtual servers, can I forward sub domain requests to the proper virtual server so they connect to the correct RemoteApp screen etc.  Again all I have is 1 IP.

I hope all of these questions make sense.  I just want every business to be independent of each other on the Hyper-V, each on their own virtual server, all without changing default ports on each server, each server running RDS, (possibly) AD, (a few) FTP, and all over a common single WAN IP.  Hoping subdomains (possibly managed through IIS on the physical DC) will redirect users to their appropriate virtual server.

Dynamic LBFO Load Balancing mode causing issues

Hi,

We`re running a couple of virtual machines with the BIG-IP Virtual Edition in a Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V cluster.
These virtual machines have had problems where traffic sent through the virtual machines doesn`t get through due to the MAC Addresses of the physical team NICs being replaced with the Mac Address from the team member actually used to transmit the packet.

Reference:

Windows Server 2012 R2 NIC Teaming (LBFO) Deployment and Management

Blog post - Server 2012 Hyper-V / NIC Team Oddity

One of the comments in the blog-post states what we are seeing:

The reason for the MAC Address switching you’re seeing is that Server 2012 in some cases will replace the source MAC address on Ethernet frames with the MAC Address from the team member actually used to transmit the packet. The reason for this is that if it always kept the MAC Address intact, the switch would throw alarms for “MAC flapping”, i.e. seeing a given MAC Address bouncing back and forth between switch ports.

When we changed the Load Balancing mode from Dynamic to Hyper-V port, the problem was resolved.

Is it possible to solve this problem while still using Dynamic as the Load Balancing mode? Would LACP instead of Switch independent teaming mode solve the problem?

Full HyperV Backup - Symantec Backup Exec (any version)

I'm sure this will be a favourite topic, but I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on this situation.

We have a customer which has Server 2008 R2 with a .vhd which is 1.46TB in size, and a fixed disk.  They have only 150GB spare on the drive which seemed like enough.  We have had an occasional full HyperV backup to tape, but almost every other day it fails with the following in Backup Exec (now 2014):

"V-79-40960-38521 - Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on: "VRTSRV::\\HG-2008-STD\Hyper-V?Virtual?Machine\HG-2011-SBS". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
A virtual machine snapshot could not be created.  Use the Event Viewer on the Hyper-V host to identify the cause.  If the virtual machine is not properly configured, it may be necessary to use the Event Viewer in the virtual machine to identify the cause."

In the Event log of the Virtual Machine itself, there is only one VSS error, of which I'm told I can safely ignore, but resolved anyway:

"Error: NetLocalGroupGetMemebers(spfarm), 0x80070560, The specified local group does not exist."

I also have the following error on the physical host each time I run the backup:

"Failed to create the backup of virtual machine 'HG-2011-SBS'. (Virtual machine ID A5185ADC-F34B-4898-927C-784EBC23EA1B)"

Symantec say it's the VSS writers (apart from one support technician who admitted their product was a joke) but then Microsoft say it's Symantecs issue.  I'm inclined to believe Microsoft in this case, but I'm getting nowhere and our customer isn't getting a reliable backup of their whole vhd.

Is this due to only having slightly less than 10% free space on the physical host or just Backup Exec being its usual self?  Does HyperV REQUIRE that you have a certain percentage of space free on the physical machine to process?

ReFS / Hyperv / Storage Spaces

I am having a lot of trouble getting Hyperv Server 2012 with Storage Spaces and ReFS working reliably. (Or even finding anything with regards to best practices).

I have tried making the a giant 2TB (2 TB Enterprise Sata Drives - Mirror from storage spaces single volume.) ReFS partition with the intention of just using vhdx's on it but in this case then the pool starts offline every reboot.

I have also tried creating Volumes for each VM on the Storage space. Then off-lining them and adding them to hyperv. This seems to work pretty well as well but again has to be manually redone each reboot. I suspect there is some parameter I don't know that I can add from powershell to make this possible. This breaks Centos 6 when used with a sparse volume.

I could potentially use standard Windows software raid but it has been implied to me that the self healing part of ReFS only works with Storage Spaces.

Single Box. (32GB ECC RAM / Xeon E3 1230v2 / Booting from USB / 2 Enterprise SATA 2TB Disks / 2 Intel Nics - 1 management the other for the VM's (Has the VM offload feature).

Dunno about sparse vs fixed vhdx's either.

It seems like they are fairly similar. (Tested under Centos because I know how to do it fairly easily under high load - if it is going to be ok upto a certain amount of disk capacity used then I will probably use it).

I really don't like the idea of running a VM with the disks passed through and then iscsi. (I know what can happen with ZFS even on Solaris when you need to use zdb I expect it to be even more difficult on Linux - Solaris isn't suitable because if you use a partitioned disk (i.e to boot from) you lose the disk cache.)

I have fairly simple needs just trying to learn hyperv. (I know VMWARE and Xen reasonably well).

Right now I have a Single ReFS fixed volume taking up 75% of the pool and it seems to reboot and be mounted but I am convinced there must be something I am missing with regards to using a volume on the storage space as storage for a VM. (For some things like builds using a volume with raid0 like characteristics would be desirable for me).

Anything at all would be helpful there is lots of slides saying that what I am doing is a good idea but not anything that provides any detail about it.

Hello,

I'm trying to create a new VM associated to an external network adapter on Hyper-V RC0. At the end of creation, the VM tries to start but two messages appear on the host machine and the VM disappears (sorry, I use the french version of Windows Server 2008 RTM) :

I have setup my Hyper-V Failover Cluster.  Now, I want to integrate Windows Azure Pack with my solution so that end-users can access it via portal and make two kinds of requests i.e. creation of virtual machines and deletion of virtual machines.  I have been given a design, but not sure how to go ahead with it as to which component should be installed and configured first.  The design includes 2 Servers for ADFS, 2 Servers for SCO, 2 Servers for WAP Admin Site and 2 Servers for WAP Tenant Site.  I would appreciate if someone could list the order as well as steps required to achieved the creation and deletion of virtual machines through it.  Thanks in advance.

Dear All,

            I have setup my Fabric Cluster and Fabric Management Cluster.  Now, I want to integrate Windows Azure Pack with my solution so that end-users can access it via portal and request accordingly.  I am unsure of the exact steps required, so basically I am looking for any documentation that can guide me through with this implementation.  Essentially, I want to implement Windows Azure Pack to provide IaaS to my end-users.  Thanks.

What is the HyperV recovery snapshot type?

According to the CreateSnapshot there are two types of snapshot Full and Disc snapshot. But from MS samples (and MS patent)  i found that there is also SnapshotTypeRecoverySnapshot with id 32768 and name "Microsoft:Hyper-V:Snapshot:Recovery". I found that it is created very fast. Much faster then full and it works well. Who know what is that snapshot type and what is difference from Full and disc? (I found that when i create recovery snapshot - the snapshot tree isn't created)

All Virtual Servers showed Offline

One morning one of our consultants logged into one of our clients server to setup a local user on a Win7 VM that we have setup by Hyper-V.  He noticed that all of our other Virtual Servers we all offline.  He had to reassign the RAM and then switch them back on again.

I have viewed all the event logs and found nothing that indicates they were shut off or that anyone had shut them off. Has anyone else encountered this phenomenon or could point me in the direction as to check why they these VS shut off by themselves?

How to obtain target WWN for a LUN On Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V with Fibre Channel SAN

$

I have a large collection of Hyper-V hosts for which I would like to retrieve the target WNN and LUN ID for the LUNs visible on each host.  By target WWN I mean the storage array's WWN.

I have tried using the root\wmi namespace to retrieve MS_SMHBA_PORT_LUN instances, but I get 0 instances back.

I get instances of MSFC_FibrePortHBAAttributes back, but those only tell me the local host's HBA WWN, not the target information.

This information must be stored somewhere, because you can't access the LUN without it, I hope there is a way to retrieve it.  Is there?  Or is it write only during LUN setup?

Hyper-V vSwitch on a NIC-Team (Server 2012 R2) has limited connectivity

Hi,

I have two servers both running Server 2012 R2. One of these servers is serving as a DC and is working fine. The other is supposed to be a Hyper-V-Host, but I cannot get networking working on this system. Both systems have Hyper-V role installed. Both have 2 NICs configured as a team. The team is configured as switch-independent, Hyper-V-Port, None (all adapters active). A Hyper-V-Switch using this team as external network is configured and is shared with the host operating system. This should work fine and does on one of the servers. On the other I get a warning sign stating limited connectivity. The server seems to sent packages but it receives none. Deleting the switch and simply using the team for network access works fine. So it has to be related to the switch. But I do not know what's wrong with it. Any ideas?

Oliver

Server 2008 R2 SP1 with RRAS takes down entire network

$

We have a Hyper-V server (2008 R2 SP1) that is running several DC's.  These DC's are for different domains and establish outbound VPN connections using RRAS to sync with remote DC's.  We have a few of this with 20-30 DC's running on each Hyper-V server.

Application of SP1 to the host OS went without issue and everything remained normal.

Upgraded a single Hyper-V VM from 2008 R2 to 2008 R2 SP1 and everything connected to the physical switch went down.  Ping times went through the roof and timeouts were happening on the local physical network.  All Hyper-V guests on all Hyper-V machines had CPU usage that went from about 0% up to averaging 5% to 7%.  The processing taking all the CPU was the LocalServiceNoNetwork one which is related to packet inspection.

Using the process of elimination, we found that if we stopped RRAS on the Hyper-V guest running 2008 R2 SP1 then everything went back to normal.  We duplicated the same scenario with a different machine...and again, just stopping RRAS fixed everything. As soon as RRAS starts, the network crashes.

Has anyone else seen anything like this?  I plan on opening a case with PSS tomorrow but thought I'd ask.

Rob
