Mounted readonly vhdx problems

If i mount vhdx as readonly and without assigning drive letters WinApi and
IOCLS calls in many cases, but not in all fails with NOT_READY Win32 Error (for example
GetVolumeInformation ) and Incorrect Function[0x00000000] (for exmaple for
IoctlDiskGetDriveGeometryEx)... if i mount it not readonly and wit drive letter
- all works like with real disc drive, but that is not appropriate. Why does
that calls fails for readonly vhdx without drive letter? Whar are the restrictions?

I have setup my Hyper-V Failover Cluster. Now, I want to integrate Windows Azure Pack with my solution so that end-users can access it via portal and make two kinds of requests i.e. creation of virtual machines and deletion of virtual machines. I have been given a design, but not sure how to go ahead with it as to which component should be installed and configured first. The design includes 2 Servers for ADFS, 2 Servers for SCO, 2 Servers for WAP Admin Site and 2 Servers for WAP Tenant Site. I would appreciate if someone could list the order as well as steps required to achieved the creation and deletion of virtual machines through it. Thanks in advance.

Are there any documenting or reporting tools for Hyper-V 2008 R2? I just need to get a list of all VM guest running and their associated VHD files along with where those VHD's are stored.

Hi everyone, I'm having a problem that have been driving me crazy for weeks now.

I had 4 servers in Hyperv core 2008R2 connected with a dell equallogic.

I upgraded to 2012r2 hyperv core and I used the Migration tools from Microsoft. I'll name my 4 servers hv01 hv02 hv03 and hv04 for this example. I can have all VM running on my CSV on any of my server, but as soon as I add another host on my cluster, the CSV become Online (no access) and all vm stop within 2 minutes.

So all hosts have full access over the CSV independently, for now this is what I've done / checked :

My hosts are not DC, I can ping all network interfaces, including ISCSI, I configured the MPIO with the help of Dell documentation, The file server feature is installed and my Server and Workstation service is running on all hosts, I allowed all SMB rules inside the firewall, I can access the c$ of all my servers. My servers use broadcom and Intel network card and I already tried to disable all broadcom or all intel to see if the problem was there...

If I run the cluster validation tool for the storage, I only have this error :

Failed to validate Server Message Block (SMB) share access through the IP address of the fault tolerant network driver for failover clustering (NetFT). The connection was attempted with the Cluster Shared Volumes test user account, from node HV01 to the share on node HV02. The network path was not found.

Validating access using Server Message Block (SMB) protocol from node HV02 to a share on node HV03.

Hi All,

I have HP DL380 servers with Broadcom network adapters. I have successfully created the team and selectDynamic as the load balancing mode. This team has selected for the virtual switch. My VMs couldn't communicate to each other. sometimes it communicates with the physical host and sometimes not.

For the troubleshooting purpose i have selected a single adapter as the stand by mode. After that sometimes VM can communicate among each other and sometimes not.

i would like to know is there any solution for the issue. Also would like to know is this a bug from Microsoft or the Broadcom?

Server 2008 R2 SP1 with RRAS takes down entire network

We have a Hyper-V server (2008 R2 SP1) that is running several DC's. These DC's are for different domains and establish outbound VPN connections using RRAS to sync with remote DC's. We have a few of this with 20-30 DC's running on each Hyper-V server.

Application of SP1 to the host OS went without issue and everything remained normal.

Upgraded a single Hyper-V VM from 2008 R2 to 2008 R2 SP1 and everything connected to the physical switch went down. Ping times went through the roof and timeouts were happening on the local physical network. All Hyper-V guests on all Hyper-V machines had CPU usage that went from about 0% up to averaging 5% to 7%. The processing taking all the CPU was the LocalServiceNoNetwork one which is related to packet inspection.

Using the process of elimination, we found that if we stopped RRAS on the Hyper-V guest running 2008 R2 SP1 then everything went back to normal. We duplicated the same scenario with a different machine...and again, just stopping RRAS fixed everything. As soon as RRAS starts, the network crashes.

Has anyone else seen anything like this? I plan on opening a case with PSS tomorrow but thought I'd ask.

I have a doubt about User Cals with Hyper-v Server 2012. I have A domain controller 2008 R2, and I will configure hyper-v server 2012 R2 to some virtual machines, these VMs will be 2008 R2 as Operation System.

The question, need I buy cals version 2012 R2? I´ll join hyper-v server in domain.

Hi all, i'm in trouble with a 4 node 2012 hyper-v cluster. After some weeks of normal operations i cannot connect to failover cluster manager who tells me that "the object does not exists" even if i could connect in rdp to the virtual ip server, resolve the address with nslookup and so on. Meanwhile even Hyperv management console goes unresponsive and does not let me connect and manage the server (localhost or not is the same) the error in this case is "check the virtual machine management service is running and that you are authorized to connect the server". Vms hosted by these servers still are responsive and in normal operations but i cannot manage them and/or view any state. I then check the service trying to restart that but it hangs and or crash. The only way i can solve this situation is shutdown the host to migrate the vms with several (minimal, modearate) downtimes. looking around in services and dependecies i noticed the RPC object seems to not exists and there is no way to restart the service.

Now i've restarted the servers and everything works fine, even if i think this issue should come back in some days/weeks. what should i check? maybe the failures comes after a live migration but i cannot tell this were an unluky situation or that should start the problem: everyday migrations don't give us any problems. this is going to be very frustrating.

Hi there,

So I've got an Acer AR180 F1 server with 6 Intel 82576 NICs, running a standalone Hyper-V role on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard. Storage is direct-attached.

In Server Manager, I've added the first 2 physical NICs to a dynamic LACP NIC team. This is to be used for management traffic (eg. RDP to the server from my workstation).

I want to dedicate the remaining 4 physical NICs to Hyper-V traffic.

Initially I only had a single VM running Windows Server 2012 R2, so for each of the 4 physical NICs I created a Hyper-V Virtual Switch with SR-IOV enabled. This allowed me to go into the 2012 R2 guest and do the team there, taking advantage of SR-IOV.

However, I now need to run a second VM on the server, running Windows Server 2008 R2.

As I understand it, you can't do native NIC teaming in the guest when the guest is 2008 R2.

So what I've done is:

delete the 4 Hyper-V Virtual Switches
in the host OS, create a dynamic LACP NIC team called "Hyper-V" on the 4 remaining physical NICs
create a Hyper-V Virtual Switch called "Hyper-V Team Switch" connected to the "Hyper-V" NIC team

Questions:

Is there a better way of doing this, or am I on the right track?
I noticed when creating the Hyper-V Team Switch that I could still choose to enable SR-IOV. Is there any point in doing this? I thought that SR-IOV doesn't work for a VM when you team the NICs at the host OS level.

I have virtual machine on windows server 2012 Hyper-V with 1 virtual hard disk and 2 partitions(C and D)

how i can extend C partition?

i tried to extend the virtual hard disk but when i login to virtual machine i found 3rd partition added to the disk 0 unallocated space.

is there any way to do that ?

Error 0x80070057 when importing VM from Server 2008R2 to Server 2012 R2

Hello. I am using SCVMM 2012 to export a Windows 7 desktop from a 2008R2 HyperV server, to a 2012R2 HyperV server. The job fails at step 1.5 (Import Hyper-V virtual machine) in the SCVMM log. The error message is:

Error (2901)

The operation did not complete successfully because of a parameter or call sequence that is not valid. the parameter is incorrect (0x80070057)

Recommended Action

Ensure that the parameters are valid, and then try the operation again.

I've found the KB968968 regarding "ScopeOfResidence" and that isn't the problem here. the EXP file that is created on my target server has no data between the [VALUE][/VALUE] tags for this element.

When I try to manually import from the target server using HyperV manager rather than SCVMM, I browse to the folder where the VHD and subfolders containing the EXP file are located and I get "Hyper-V did not find virtual machines to import from location"G:\my\path\to\this\VHD" " Same thing when I browse to any subordinate folder such as the Virtual Machines folder or the GUID folder underneath that.

I'm putting a new server on my lab for testing and i have assigned it a static IP address. However, when i bring the machine online, i get a warning of duplicate IP (and i know this IP is not used). Anyway, this is the output from IPCONFIG.

Why would i be getting a 169 address when i have assigned a static and i dont have dhcp enabled? I have 3 other servers on this virtual switch and they all work fine.

Hello All,

I just took up a new position as a system administrator and have been conducting some inventory on our server status and do not know how to proceed. What I have is a single Hyper V 2012 server that is currently in a workgroup then domain1.local and domain2.local hosted on it. All servers are hosted on this thing DC, Exchange, Sharepoint, File Server!! While my plan in the future is to move the DC's or at least the backups to another physical system I am having to live with it for the time being.

The thing that I have been trying to figure out is why is the Hyper V server in a workgroup and shouldn't it be a part of the "local" domain that way the two subdomains can be tied together. If this is the case what is the process of making the move do I just need to add a DC to the local domain then add the Hyper-V server to it. If so can that DC manage the subdomains as well?

Sorry if the question is not coherent I have some server experience but not on the multi domain configuration level.

Multiple vDCs same host with no physical DC?

I have a physical server running 2k8 R2 with Hyper-V. Unfortunately, for what its worth, it is not able to run 2k12. It is the only physical server running. I would like to create a virtual domain controller, however I have no other DCs, physical or virtual. It would be the only domain controller. Is there any value in having 2 vDCs on that same host, or is it pointless since they are both running on the same host, therefore providing little actual redundancy?
