SCVMM 2012 R2 agent update stopped all VMs on Hyper-v host

Hello

we have a 2012 R2 environment ( 5 nodes ) and SCVMM 2012 R2 RU3 .

we just deployed RU3 and as part of the update ; we initialized a agent update through scvmm fabric console.

Agent update was smooth on 3 hosts but it failed on two hosts . we got an error basically saying that SCVMM was
not able to launch installer. Tried one more time and this time job was stuck .

a few minutes later ; I noticed that the entire host was not responding and all VMs had stopped .

attempted to reboot ; made it even worse because hyper-v management server went into a funky state and stayed
in "stopping mode " ; eventually servers were rebooted . after the reboot I was able to re-associate the agents and they seem to be updated !
it was a scary scenario and caused some outages .. any insights ?

Hi,

Hyper-v VM with windows 2003 are running too slow. we are using Intel Pro NIC and having updatd drivers.

have checked all CPU/Disk/Network utilization is normal and q-depth is also normal then also VM are taking too much time to open/reboot.

we already disabled unwanted Task scheduler/distributed NIC traffic.

also excluded VHD files location from Symantec AV list. please advise the next troubleshooting.

Teaming options with Windows 2012 R2 Host for HV Guests

Hi

We are configuring Windows 2012 R2 standard host servers for Win 2008 / Win 2012 Guest servers. We have 3 NICs and using one for host management and other two in windows teaming. We read many blogs and supported configurations, but still not clear about the options with teaming.  Usually with teaming we select the default options such as Switch Independent Teaming mode, Dynamic Load Balancing mode with no standby adapter. Recently with this teaming configuration we faced issues with host servers on multiple Windows 2012 R2 standard host servers (the guest hang multiple times) and when we removed one of the NICs from team it started working fine. With the switches we didn't find any issues nor with NICs. Is it because of the default team options? Should we go with Hyper V port Load balancing mode?

Expect support from you guys. Thanks in advance

CAS Server not Migrating

Hope ur all doing well, we have 2 physical Servers HV1 and HV2, both servers are part of VMs cluster, each server hosts a CAS and an mbx HA VM i.e HV1 hosts CAS1, CAS2, and HV2 hosts MBX1 and MBX2. Few days ago CAS1 Server crashed, we created a new VM CAS3 from Fail-over Cluster Manager Console>> Services and applications, new vm created in the CSV storage with the same settings (Processors, RAM, NICs) as of crashed CAS1 server, and recovered it with setup /m:RecoverServer..all goes well Server recovered successfully and added back to the CAS WNLB successfully and working all fine, just one PROBLEM, CAS3 vm is unable to Live migrate, quick migrate or even unable to move on to the other host Server. When we live migrate it, it completes transfer 100% but comes back onto the original Host again with the following error in Cluster Events.

Even ID: 1205

"The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application 'CAS3' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application."

Please suggest how can I dig into this error where can I start troubleshooting with what resources might be missing? In Failover Cluster Manager all the Resources are Green.

All DC servers on Hyper-V

Hi, I have a small setup with 2 node (Hyper-V 2012 R2) and about 12 VM's running on there. Also I have an physical server running DC (PDC) is there is there any recommendation on running all you're production servers inside Hyper-V (all VM's). Also my Hyper-V setup is running in a workgroup now, but I want to join the nodes to the domain. Do you have any pros/cons for this while running all DC's inside Hyper-V

Domain Controller P2V to create VM in Hyper-V - Help!

Hello,

I just installed Hyper V role on windows server 2008 R2 Ent SP1 LAB computer.  We have our domain controller (Windows 2003 R2, all FSMO in place-parent) from which I generated a .vhd image of full server using Symantec System Recovery 2013 P2V tool (unfortunately no SCVMM or that kind in place), the Symantec tool seems good as I made other servers to P2V.

While doing P2V on Domain Controllers to create a Hyper-V VM,

1) I'm to simply create a new VM , choose exising VHD - is that correct? Sure I'll run the 'Inspect Disk' on the VHD generated.

2) Once VM is created, go ahead and uncheck 'Time Synchronization' from Integration Services - correct?

3) Install Integration Services Setup Disk, once logged into the VM.

What other things to care or prepare? Note this is just for a LAB purpose so minor errors could be ignored, sure need to bring more VMs that's dependsnt on this Domain Controller availability in the same LAB.

Thanks

Snapshot applied / "The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed"

I applied a newer snapshot in the snapshot tree for one of our Win2008 vms.  After applying the snapshot, I now get this error upon trying to login into the VM console:

"The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed."

Note, the machine was already in the domain in the old and new snapshots so not sure why it has AD problems after applying the snapshot.  Please advise.

BitLocker on CSV Volume Before and After

Dear All,

I would appreciate, if someone could list down steps or provide link to any article which shows you how to configure BitLocker for a CSV volume.  I have read many articles, but most of them are very confusing.  It can be done in one of two ways, either before adding the disk to the cluster and making it CSV or taking the already mounted CSV volume into maintenance mode and configuring.

I am particularly interested in the specific steps that are required to configure it.  I would appreciate steps of both methods.  Thanks in advance.

The Cluster is based on Microsoft WIndows Server 2012 R2.

Windows Server 2012 - Hyper-V - Cluster Sharded Storage - VHDX unexpectedly gets copied to System Volume Information by "System", Virtual Machines stops respondig

$

We have a problem with one of our deployments of Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V with a 2 node cluster connected to a iSCSI SAN.

Our setup:

Hosts - Both run Windows Server 2012 Standard and are clustered.

  • HP ProLiant G7, 24 GB RAM. This is the primary host and normaly all VMs run on this host.
  • HP ProLiant G5, 20 GB RAM. This is the secondary host that and is intended to be used in case of failure of the primary host.
  • We have no antivirus on the hosts and the scheduled ShadowCopy (previous version of files) is switched off.

iSCSI SAN:

  • QNAP NAS TS-869 Pro, 8 INTEL SSDSA2CW160G3 160 GB i a RAID 5 with a Host Spare. 2 Teamed NIC.

Switch:

  • DLINK DGS-1210-16 - Both the network cards of the Hosts that are dedicated to the Storage and the Storage itself are connected to the same switch and nothing else is connected to this switch.

Virtual Machines:

  • 3 Windows Server 2012 Standard - 1 DC, 1 FileServer, 1 Application Server.
  • 1 Windows Server 2008 Standard Exchange Server.
  • All VMs are using dynamic disks (as recommended by Microsoft).

Updates

  • We have applied the most resent updates to the Hosts, VMs and iSCSI SAN about 3 weeks ago with no change in our problem and we continually update the setup.

Normal operation:

  • Normally this setup works just fine and we see no real difference in speed in startup, file copy and processing speed in LoB applications of this setup compared to a single host with two 10000 RPM Disks. Normal network speed is 10-200 Mbit, but occasionally we see speeds up to 400 Mbit/s of combined read/write for instance during file repair.

Our Problem:

  • Our problem is that for some reason a random VHDX gets copied to System Volume Information by "System" of the Clusterd Shared Storage (i.e. C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\System Volume Information).
  • All VMs stops responding or responds very slowly during this copy process and you can for instance not send CTRL-ALT-DEL to a VM in the Hyper-V console, or for instance start task manager when already logged in.
  • This happens at random and not every day and different VHDX files from different VMs gets copied each time. Some time it happens during daytime wich causes a lot of problems, especially when a 200 GB file gets copied (which take a lot of time).

What it is not:

  • We thought that this was connected to the backup, but the backup had finished 3 hours before the last time this happended and the backup never uses any of the files in System Volume Information so it is not the backup.

An observation:

  • When this happend today I switched on ShadowCopy (previous files) and set it to only to use 320 MB of storage and then the Copy Process stopped and the virtual Machines started responding again. This could be unrelated since there is no way to see how much of the VHDX that is left to be copied, so it might have been finished at the same time as I enabled  ShadowCopy (previos files).

Our question:

  • Why is a VHDX copied to System Volume Information when scheduled ShadowCopy (previous version of files) is switched off? As far as I know, nothing should be copied to this folder when this functionis switched off?

Windows server 2008R2 with exchange 2010 nic problem

I'm in a jam and loosing it...  Make a long story short, 2 months ago I moved my physical exchange 2010 server (running server 2008R2) to Hyper-V using scvmm 2012.  I had a few hiccups with the nic teaming, but once I removed the nic team, set both external and internal dns, mails were flowing pretty well... Until yesterday.

Now, my excahnge server lost both it's internal and external DNS and I can't add them.  Now I'm goign to do my best to translate the messages as my exchange is in french...  When I go to server configuration - properties - external or internal dns- I get the following error: Cannot read the informations from network adapter.  Error: invalid class.  Running command "Get-Networkconnectioninfo - Identity "Myservername"  and then the DNS options are greyed out and can't select anything

I deleted the nics and recreated them ( tried network adapter and legacy adapter with same results) and still getting the error

Enviroment is :

Exchange is version 14.03.0195.001

Hyper-v cluster issues after adding new nodes

I have a Hyperv cluster consist of 4 nodes with win2k8R2 SP1 on IBM X3650 M3. The cluster is managed by SCVMM 2012 SP1. The CSV is a IBM DS3524 fibre connection through SAN Switch.

I have an individual Hyper-v host installed with the win2k8R2 SP1 on IBM X3650 M4. We decide to add to the cluster. The new node is configured to the same as the cluster node server. The new node failed to add to the cluster. It passed the validation but failed on adding the node to the cluster.

The error stated is:

Error (25334)
Adding host mghyperv04.dtp.local to the cluster 2thqhvfarm01.dtp.local failed because of error An error occurred while performing the operation . Please refer to cluster documentation for resolving cluster problems.

But later I found the new host is member of the cluster through SCVMM and failover cluster manager. But the CSV status for the disk becomes online (redirected access) and causes problems to the VM.

I shutdown the newly added host, and the CSV status returns to online. When I power on the new node again, it takes very long to boot to the windows and when the new node's failover services started, the CSV status for the disk becomes online (redirected access) again.

I check on the disk management on the new nodes, it takes forever to get it load.

And the MPIO for all the nodes have lots of devices added. Previously it only have IBM MPIO devices.

I been scratching my head how to resolve this. Please advise.

Thanks

Hi

I wish to know if storage migration can be carried out for  virtual machines which  utilises virtual fiber channel connectivity to a san storage LUN.

The virtual host is windows 2012 .

The requirement is that we plan to migrate the complete virtual machines data to a new storage LUN.

SQL on Hyper-V Replica. Do I need to reseed my VMs if I enable “EnableWriteOrderPreservationAcrossDisks” after the replication has occurs?

$

Hi,

I need some guidance here.

I found these:

  • SQL Server on Hyper-V Replica is supported provided the EnableWriteOrderPreservationAcrossDisks flag is set.
  • Microsoft SQL Server can be supported on a Hyper-V replica so long as high availability of SQL Server is neither enabled nor used, and if SQL Server database and log files are hosted on one VHD file.
  • To maintain the SQL Server database integrity, you need to have at least one good copy of “Application-Consistent” snapshot which can be used at Replica Virtual Machine to bring databases online in case of any disaster at primary site. So it is recommended to perform a scheduled backup of SQL Primary Virtual Machine using the backup software of your own and do not just depend on the Hyper-V replication.

I have these questions:

  • Do I need to enable “EnableWriteOrderPreservationAcrossDisks” if my database and log files are store in one VHD?
  • Do I need to reseed my VMs if I enable “EnableWriteOrderPreservationAcrossDisks” after the replication has occurs?
  • How can I check if “EnableWriteOrderPreservationAcrossDisks” is enable?
  • If I enable “EnableWriteOrderPreservationAcrossDisks”, can I store my database and log files in different VHDs?
  • How can I minimize data loss in my SQL Replica VM?

Thanks in advanced.

SCVMM 2012 SP1 Virtual Switch on Cluster Node Disappears

$

I have been running into an interesting but an alarming issue with virtual switches. I have recently built a 4 node Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. I have built numerous 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V clusters before, so I am pretty familiar with the process. I have rebuilt my VMM due to software problems, and on this new cluster, I have configured the virtual switches with nic teaming on 2 of the virtual switches.

I have 4 clusters being managed by this VMM.. and this newly built cluster keeps losing all of the VMM virtual switch configurations, meaning if I go to properties on the problem host and click on virtual switches, its blank. Refresh host cluster flags all virtual machines in this cluster as "Unsupported Configuration," making the vm unmanageable via VMM.

Information (26844)
Virtual switch (Virtual Switch Name) is not highly available because the switch is not available in host (One of the Hyper-V Hosts).

Recommended Action

All virtual servers on that host still has connectivity, as all virtual switch configs are normal when looking at it with Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Manager..

The workaround is to evacuate the host using Failover Cluster Manager and reboot the host. Then refresh the host. Then refresh the VM's. I cannot consider this a 'workaround' as I cannot be rebooting my hyper-V hosts every week.. and migrating virtual servers constantly just for this reason. (DPM backups have a FIT with csv's if it tries to backup a vm on a same csv as another vm thats being migrated.)

I have been wrestling with this problem for a few weeks now. The cluster has been slicked and completely rebuilt.. Still same problems. Has ANYONE else out there seen this issue? Does ANYONE out there suggest a way to go about further troubleshooting this issue?

Hyper-V - Oracle DB backup

Hello,

I have a situation that i cant resolve by myself. I need to find a solution to backupOracle DB to USB stick, DB is running on Hyper-V (Ghost OS Microsoft Server 2008R2).

Host is running Server 2008R2, Ghost is running Server 2008R2, problem is that users don't and CAN'T have access to host OS, they can just log-in to Ghost OS. Hyper-V cant read USB sticks by default.

First i wanted to create a shared Host-Ghost folder, and export DB backup there, so after that i can copy it on USB from host. But as i said users don't have access to host and this solution doesn't work. (Users are running backup procedure).

I will try to share folder on another PC over network where users can access, that is one of solution. But maybe someone can offer me better solution.

Thanks.

High available hyperv VM existis on mulitple nodes.

Hello,

We have an issue here with our hyper-v cluster.

Setup is 2 hyper-v clusters (2008r2) 7 nodes and SCVMM (2012sp1).

Since a few day's we are experiencing weird issues:

In the failovercluster manager vm1 is shown on hostA and is "Online". If I look on HyperV manager on hostA the vm1 is there and running. If I then look in SCVMM it show vm1 on hostB and stopped with incomplete vm configuration. When I logon to the hostB and look in HyperV manager the vm1 is there and "off"

This is starting to get worse by the day with about 50 machines impacted.

I performed a drain of all nodes and did a reboot one by one this just moves the problem around but does not solve it.

Any help on this much appreciated.

Regards,

Peter
