Adding promiscuous mode in server 2012 hyper-v

I am running a esxi lab within hyper-v and the vms within this do not want to connect to the network. I have been told that I need to enable promiscuous mode on the virtual switch and I can't find the option anywhere. I cannot get guest OSes to connect to the network under the vmware vsphere.

Is there any way to enable this? Please respond. Thank you.

Hyper-V WMI Provider - Searching and Setting Port Mirroring

Is there any way to search for VMs with Port Mirroring disabled through WMI provider?? I'm working on a little application to set port mirroring to destination but I can't find anything in WMI Provider API. I know this can be achieved using PowerShell cmdlets but I would rather use WMI and C# if possible. Thanks.

Can Disk2VHD or another tool ignore existing VHD files when converting physical drives?

I have an SQL Server running a HyperV roll on windows Server 2012 that I want to convert to a VHD. It has two 1 TB RAID arrays and the database is stored on the D drive along with a 500 GB Static VHD. Is there a tool that will allow me to Disk2vhd the server and the database without including this VHD file?

How to Set HyperV NIC in Promiscuous Mode

Is there any way to set up a NIC on a virtual HyperV guest in promiscuous mode?
I want to try and run a web filtering product on a VM. Wireshark does not indicate that it is capturing all traffic.
I have my switch port mirrored already and it works with a regular box but not with the VM.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy

Hyper V and HRL files

$

I have been running 2012R2 Hyper-v for several months. I have been using the Replica functionality from day 1. I have 18 VMs running on 3 different servers, 4 VMs on one, 5 VMs on another and 9 VMs on another. All host servers and VMs are running 2012R2. I have NIC teams on each server. Each server has 64Gb of RAM. This is a small shop, so I am the only IT person here. I use Symantec BUE 2014 with the Hyper-v option, Shavlik Patch Management and Protect and Condusive V-locity. Everything has been running fine. Replications are fast and take just seconds.

I decided to use Extended Replication over a WAN for a Disaster Recovery solution. I have a 10Mb pipe to a local server farm. All of the servers replicate fine. But…

A couple of times a day, each VM replicates a large HRL file, anywhere from 1.2Gb to 2.3Gb in size. When the replication was local, this was not a problem and pretty much unnoticed by me. When the Extended Replica tries to replicate this large HRL file over the WAN, as you can imagine, everything goes to a crawl.

I have looked through Task Scheduler, Event logs, files, etc. trying to find what is causing this large file to develop. I have excluded files from virus scanning, removed patch scanning, removed disk defrag, basically about everything I can think of.  Can anyone think of what to do next? Any place to look? Anything? Any ideas are welcome.

Smart Paging File Location and Gust server loading

$

Hi

We configured virtual servers with fixed memory size, say 25 GB. While starting the machine we are getting error  "Could not initialize memory: There is not enough space on the disk". So we changed the location of Smart Paging File, still got the same error, finally changed the current configuration and checkpoint location to another drive and now it's fine. So  while starting the server or while the server is up, .bin file is created as same size as fixed memory (startup memory).

My concern is how the .bin is linked with smart page file? in our case even after changing the location of Smart page file got the error, that means the .bin is trying to create with configuration path.

For better performance we believe always we have to mention fixed memory than dynamic. Because of the above error we kept the configuration / smart paging and checkpoint location local to server than in SAN, but in case of server failure it will affect the recovery of guest server configuration files

Expect a clarity on this.

Virtual CPU "power

We have a Hyper-V (Win 2008 R2) Guest whose CPU usage (measured from inside the Guest) is always abot 70-80%. Too high. (The HOST reports CPU usage of the Guest as in the 6-7% range). Can we adjust how "powerful" this virtual CPU is (e.g. can we adjust the CPU model and "speed")?

TIA,

How to allocate virtual hardware to Windows 7 Guests on Hyper-V 2012 R2?

$

I'd like to get an idea how to size a server.

An example would be a Server 2012 R2  Enterprise or Datacenter Edition server running Hyper-V to run 10 guests each running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

All guests will need to be running and available 24/7, but at any one time it is likely that only 5 will be in active use by a user.  Of course, at some point it is possible that all 10 could be in active use.

How could we look at sizing the server itself for RAM and CPU as well as how to allocate CPU/RAM to the guests?

If each guest was a physical machine, they would likely each have a single 2011-era  Pentium CPU and 4GB RAM to themselves and we would like around that performance available even if all machines were actively being used simultaneously.

VMM 2012 R2 unable to start VM in Fusion Lab - Event ID 15130 20144

I have created a System Center lab on my Macbook using Fusion with 4 x Windows 2012 R2 VM's and 1 Windows 2008 R2 VM

2 Hyper-V Hosts

1 System Center VMM 2012

1 Windows 2008 DC

I have created my first VM without HA on the host group but it fails to start with:

Error (12700)
VMM cannot complete the host operation on the msschv04.mssc.com server because of the error: 'VM1' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID C479CA36-3131-44C9-94AF-602EBC572078)

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to start the virtual machine 'VM1' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running (Virtual machine ID C479CA36-3131-44C9-94AF-602EBC572078).
Unknown error (0x8000)

Recommended Action
Resolve the host issue and then try the operation again.

The Hyper-V server reports event ID:15130

'VM1' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID C479CA36-3131-44C9-94AF-602EBC572078)

and 20144

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to start the virtual machine 'VM1' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running (Virtual machine ID C479CA36-3131-44C9-94AF-602EBC572078).

I don't have any AV installed on either Host

I have not configured a virtual switch

I dont have the verifier enabled

I have configured Fusion to allow VT-x/EPT inside the VM

Can anyone advise what I can check to determine the issue.

TIA

Cisco Unified Communication Manager (CUCM)

I have found only a single document describing a successful install (hacked) of CUCM (v 8 or 9) on Windows Hyper-V.

We are all installing VMware or running an ESXI server.

There are no issues installing Red Hat on Hyper-V, right?

I don't get it.

CME is installed directly on a router. CUCM is standalone. I cannot find an answer from Cisco. Everyone says it cannot be done, except in that one article. Ultimately, it does not matter, but why the extra step installing VMware?

Shared nothing Live Migration Fails at 65%

$

I have multiple identical Hyper-V hosts (not clustered) with Server 2012 Datacenter on them.  When attempting to migrate machines

from one to the other (Share-Nothing), The will go to 65% and then they will fail.  The error that I get is:

'HYPERV07'. (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxx)

Virtual hard disks information transfer failed for virtual machine 'VM1': This

operation returned because the timeout period expired. (0x800705B4). (Virtual Machine ID

xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx).

Failed to receive data for a Virtual Machine migration: This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

(0x800705B4).

The operation timed out.

Some migrations will succeed, and some will not.  It doesn't matter if I do it with the machines live or shut down.  The Hosts are on the same subnet, in the same domain.  I have the Kerberos delegation configured for the hosts.  Each host has a ten gig interface (active) and a 1 gig interface (standby) in a NIC Team.  I get the same error if I try to migrate them from the GUI or Powershell.  Any help would be appreiated.

VHDX Support for W2008R2 Guest

$

I'm a little confused about the support for guest o/s's using the VHDx format. I have seen quotes on this forum saying that any supported guest o/s can be run using VHDx, yet when I create a virtual HD using W2012R2 Hyper-V, it says that W2012 is the oldest o/s to support VHDx.

Currently, I have a pre-production environment running on a Hyper-V W2012R2 platform. All the guest VM's are (Gen 1) W2008R2 servers. Currently I am using the VHDx format for the boot and data disks on these VM's. Everything seems to be running OK now, but I am concerned that if this is not a supported configuration that I may have trouble in the future.

Can someone clarify if my environment would be supported by Microsoft going forward, and if not, can I simply convert the existing VHDx volumes into VHD's using the Hyper-V Manager GUI?

Thanks!

I have this Microsoft Windows SMI USB DISK (driver version 6.3.6900.16384) (winblue_rtm.130821-1623) flash drive. I had downloaded a bunch of important files to it from my company which are very important on it to retrieve. The flash drive was working fine then one day it won't allow me access to it. It stated Temp.Exe now. It shows empty but when looking at the storage space it shows it had almost full data contained on it. It won't allow me access to gain the stored files on it. I don't understand this and I am running windows 8.1 systems.  I can't loose this data on the flash drive can anyone help with this issue?  It makes no sense to me...

Script to check and start VM working, but not as ScheduledJob / Scheduled Task

$

Good Day All,

I’ve seen several threads on the subject, and I feel like I’ve exhausted the recommended help offered in them.

What I have is a Windows 7 VM that likes to drop into a “Saved” state, sometimes once a month or so. I don’t know why, and considering the purpose of the machine, it’s not that big of a deal. I thought it would be easier to just write a script that checks the VM, and starts it if it’s not. This is what I’ve ended with:

Import-Module Hyper-V
$VM = Get-VMIntegrationService -VMName HVAC-Win7 -Name Heartbeat
if($VM.PrimaryStatusDescription -ne "OK"){start-vm HVAC-Win7}

Once it works, I intend to add some additional things to log that the script does to a log file, but I'm more concerned with getting it working for the time being.

This works from PowerShell as is (above), but not as a Scheduled Task or as a Scheduled Job. Here’s the syntax I used to create the Scheduled Job:

Register-ScheduledJob –Name "Keep HVAC Alive" -ScriptBlock { Import-Module Hyper-V ; $VM = Get-VMIntegrationService -VMName HVAC-Win7 -Name Heartbeat ; if($VM.PrimaryStatusDescription -ne "OK") { start-vm HVAC-Win7 } }

And

Register-ScheduledJob –Name "Keep HVAC Alive" –FilePath C:\Scripts\HVAC\TestVMStatus.ps1

I’ve created the Tasks per best practices (as far as I’m aware), the action is powershell.exe, and the argument was the path to the script.

Both the Task and the Job are configured to run even if the user is not logged on, and as highest privileges. The account used to run it has ‘logon as a batch job’ rights (no error is presented when the account is selected and the password is provided).

When the Job is configured to run as SYSTEM, it runs, but nothing happens. When it’s configured to run as me, it just hangs. When it’s configured to run as a Hyper-V Mgmt account I created and gave rights to, it runs, but does not start the VM. The logs don’t say much, just that they started and terminated as one would expect.

Any other ideas? Thank you in advance for your help!

diskpart won't make disks offline

$

Hi.

I have a Hyper-V Server 2012 with a single VM for Server 2012 R2. I gave that VM access to two 1TB disks as physical disks, and had Server 2012 R2 add those disks to a storage pool. That configuration worked for awhile, and then I added a third 1TB disk to the system. When I rebooted the Hyper-V Server, the physical disk mappings in the VM were lost. On the Hyper-V Server, diskpart reports the two older drives as online. I can only get diskpart to change the status of the new drive, and naturally only get the new drive to show up as a option to use as the physical disks in the VM.

Diskpart reports the older drives as online, 0 bytes free, and there's only an '*' in the Gpt column. When I ask to make those disks online, diskpart reports success; but the status never changes. Rescan doesn't make a difference, they always show up as online. I've tried making them online, and diskpart reports they are already online. I've also tried booting the VM without these drives; but the status is the same.

I could live without the content of these drives; but I'm not sure nuking them will ever allow them to be made offline again. So, I'd rather try to persist the data for awhile.

Thanks for any help.
