Virtual Machine Interface Configuration

Dear All,

I am building a Hyper-V Failover cluster.  I have created two teamed interfaces which comprise of two physical NICs.  One team is assigned to Cluster Communication, Heartbeat and Live Migration.  The other teamed interface I plan to use is for Virtual Machines.  I have following questions with regards to configuring the virtual machines teamed interface:

1.  Since, virtual machines would be of different subnet on the host, what needs to be configured on the teamed interface in order for it to support multiple VLANs? what other settings on the vms would be required?

2. How would I be managing multiple VLANs on the host?

3.  What needs to be configured on the port/switch for such a configuration?

Hyper-V Failover Cluster Configuration Confirmation

Dear All,
I have created a Hyper-V Failover Cluster and I want you to confirm if the configuration I have done is okay and I have not missed

out anything that is mandatory for a Hyper-V Failover Cluster to work.  My configuration is below:

1. Presented Disks to servers, formatted and taken offline
2. Installed necessary features, such as failover clustering
3. Configured NIC Teaming
4. Created cluster, not adding storage at the time of creation
 - Added disks to the cluster
 - Added disks as CSV
 - Renamed disks to represent respective CSV volumes
 - Assigning each node a CSV volume
 - Configured quorum automatically which configured the disk witness
 - There were two networks so renamed them to Management and Cluster Communication
 - Exposed Management Network to Cluster and Clients
 - Exposed Cluster Communication Network to Cluster only
5. Installed Hyper-V
 - Changed Virtual Disks, Configuration and Snapshots Location
 - Assigned one CSV volume to each node
 - Configured External switch with allow management option checked

1. For minimum configuration, is this enough?

2. If I create a virtual machine and make it highly available from hyper-v console, would it be highly available and would live

migrate, etc.?

3. Are there any configuration changes required?

4. Please, suggest how it can be made better?

Thanks in advan

Hyper-V Failover Cluster Node Corruption

Dear All,

Some of my nodes are showing abnormal behavior.  They are restarting every now and then.  I had updated the cluster nodes, but all updates were OS specific, there was nothing specific with respect to hardware update.

I have analyzed crash dumps and find out that following is causing the crash:

page_fault_in_nonpaged_area

anyone has any idea about this?

Thanks in advance.

Hyper-V NIC Team

Dear All,
I have created a NIC Team of two physical NICs and then created two team interfaces from the Team NIC.  I am using two different networks on the team interfaces which are working as well.  Due to naming convention of the NIC Team, I had to only use the team interfaces so I am not using the parent NIC Team.  So, I disabled it.  Both team interfaces are working even after disabling the parent Team NIC.  Can I keep it that way with team interfaces enabled and parent NIC Team disabled?  does it have any consequences? I am using both the team interfaces in a Hyper-V failover cluster with one network interface for management and other for cluster communication.  Kindly, confirm if it would be okay to keep it that way?

Thanks in advance.

Correct TCP IP Settings for NIC Team in Hyper-V Failover Cluster

Dear All,
Although my cluster is working fine, but I am constantly getting warnings from Cluster Validation Wizard about the APIPA IP

Addresses on different interfaces.  My configuration is below:

                                                                 TCP IP Settings

Physical NIC 1
Physical NIC 2
                     Team  1                                 Not Defined
                                Team Interface 1         Defined
                                Team Interface 2         Defined

Physical NIC 3
Physical NIC 4
                     Team  2                                 Not Defined
                     Virtual Switch                         Not Defined

I get APIPA warnings for "Team 1" and "Virtual Switch".  How can I make it disappear?

Thanks in advance.

Moving Virtual Machines from One Cluster to Another

Dear All,

1.   What is the best method of moving virtual machines from one Hyper-V Failover Cluster based on Windows Server 2008/R2 to another on the same domain?

2.   What precautions one must take while migrating virtual machines?

Thanks.

2 Node Hyper-V failover cluster with sql server

I have 2 IBM Servers with Server 2012 installed and both machines have SQL server express. Is it possible to create HYPER-V Failover between the 2 servers including the SQL SERVER Instance meaning if the main node fails the second server will take over.

The second will act as virtualized failover of the main node with failover instace to act as active to active approach.

I hope can someone give me an advice with my question.

BitLocker on CSV Volume Before and After

Dear All,

I would appreciate, if someone could list down steps or provide link to any article which shows you how to configure BitLocker for a CSV volume.  I have read many articles, but most of them are very confusing.  It can be done in one of two ways, either before adding the disk to the cluster and making it CSV or taking the already mounted CSV volume into maintenance mode and configuring.

I am particularly interested in the specific steps that are required to configure it.  I would appreciate steps of both methods.  Thanks in advance.

The Cluster is based on Microsoft WIndows Server 2012 R2.

Hyper-V Error

I am getting this error constantly on all of nodes:

Available processor sets of the underlying physical NICs belonging to the LBFO team NIC /DEVICE/{6F58A4CD-BBBB-4E4A-B7A2-122CDC06E7A2} (Friendly Name: Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver #2) on switch 597752D5-FF11-4436-83B5-449630DF04E9 (Friendly Name: vSwitch) are not configured correctly. Reason: The processor sets overlap when LBFO is configured with sum-queue mode.

Is this anything serious? Any resolution to it?

New Windows 2012 R2 VM install - Dynamic or Fixed disk size ?

$

I have sued Fixed size Virtual Disks in the past

With very limited test environment I've not noticed any real performance problems

I'm planning a new Install:

Windows 2012 R2 Std - Hyper-V Host & Windows backup rolls only (using BackUpAssist)
Windows 2012 R2 Std VM - for DC & Files
Windows 2012 R2 Std VM - for Exchange 2013
Windows 2012 R2 Std VM - for SQL Server (accounts system)

I see comments that Dynamically expanding disks with VHDX (generation 2) is a good option

Dynamic reduces backup size and time taken

Any advise would be appreciated.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 and Fiber Tape Library Compatibility

$

Hi All

I can't seem to find a definite answer so I thought I'd ask here. Does Hyper-V 2012 R2 support fiber tape libraries now?

2012 only used to support fiber storage, but I keep finding references to people using fiber tape libraries successfully but can't track down if it's officially supported.

I'd like to run Hyper-V and have DPM 2012 R2 guests with the tape library passed through to one of them.

Thanks.

Hyper-V 2012 Networking Question

Dear All,

I need to setup a hyper-v failover cluster, but I am stuck at how to setup the networking part of it.  All servers have Four-4 NICs.  Following is desirable:

Team (2 NICS) for Cluster/Heartbeat/Live Migration/CSV/I/O

Team (2 NICS) Virtual Machines with different VLANs

How to achieved such a configuration?

What changes are required on the network switch?

What changes are required on the physical NICs on servers?

What changes are required on the teamed adapters?

Is creating two-2 teams; and using the second team for Virtual Switches and assigning VLAN IDs a solution?

Would I be needing to create multiple external virtual switches for all the VLANs?

thanks in advance.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Failover Cluster Networking Question

I am little confused over how to setup the cluster to accommodate different VLANs inside the Cluster hosts.  I have 4 NICs.  I also want to separate traffic through VLANs for intracluster communication, live migration, virtualization, External, Perimeter, etc.

How can this be achieved?

Will it work by forming two teams out of 4 nics and distributing different vlans among them? if so, would appreciate if someone could share the steps.

also, what changes would be required on the network end.  Thanks.

Expanding Unbuntu Linux Disk Space

Hello,

I was expanding a Linux guest operating system today from 30GB to 50GB. After expanding the disk I started the guest operating system and noticed  a lot of data missing. Can someone explain why I may have lost this data and if I could recover it...

A few things to note that I did have a previous snapshot when I did expand the disk

Also

I now see two files a .vhd at 50GB and another with the file type of .avhd at 30GB

I have suspect that the .avhd may have my missing data as some simple searching states this is a snapshot ...is there a way to revert back to this or get the data within .avhd to be within the 50GB .vhd file??? Apologies if this sounds confusing.

HDD size keep increasing

$

Dear All,

I have one Hyper V server that is running Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise. This Hyper V is used for AD and CAS and mailbox of exchange server. I have built 3 VMs inside. For instance, VM1, VM2, and VM3. each of the VM has been given 100GB HDD size and all is fixed disk VHD. The HDD partition size that is used to store the VHD is 700GB size. Currently, each of the VM HDD utilization is less than 50%.

Now, this is the problem. currently, I have been monitoring the HDD size from the hyper v server. I found that though each of the VM is not really fully utilized, the partition that hold the VHD for the 3VMs is keep increasing. Currently it has taken over 600GB, though the total of the 3 VMs VHD size is just about 300GB. it is very strange. when I check on the properties to check the total size of the VHD folders inside the partition, It is shown that only 300 over GB being used.

Kindly advise me on what happen to the partition, which cause the size is keep growing.

thanks for your attention.

Regards,

Henry
