CentOS 7 fast tsc calibration error

$

Just installed a CentOS 7 VM. Server running 2012 R2 Standard. Getting a fast tsc calibration error with every start up. Otherwise runs fine. Have tried setting clock source to hyperv_clocksource in grub, but error message persists. Apparently this isn't a big issue, according to a number of posts I've read. After the initial error CentOS ends up using hyperv_clocksource, but I'd like to clear out the error message anyhow. Suggestions? Thank you.

Boot hyper-V server from iSCSI drive

Hi,

I have standalone hyper-V server 2012 R2 media for installation and a server which can be configured to boot from SCSI (No local HDD) from BIOS.

I have done the configuration for BIOS to boot from SCSI, I put the installation media for hyper-V and it starts loading but in the installation it is not able to detect the SCSI volume (HDD)..this is the problem.

I followed the same with win server 2008, it works fine. But with hyper-V it is not working....please give me a solution as what to do.

Cannot upgrade a Server 2000 VM to Server 2003

Hello!

I have a Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 Hyper-V server, and I have a VM of an ancient Windows 2000 Advanced Server. I need to test an in-place upgrade of that VM to Server 2003 Enterprise for a legacy app.

When I attempt the in-place upgrade, it reboots normally once about half way through the upgrade and goes back into the setup, then gets to the final stages, reboots, and then I get a BSOD with 0x0000007B error, inaccessible boot device.

Has anyone here successfully done an in-place upgrade inside of a VM going from 2000 to 2003?

A fresh installation of 2003 into a VM works fine.

I cannot wrap my head around why a perfectly running 2000 VM would suddenly not be able to find the boot device when upgraded to 2003. If a fresh install of 2003 recognizes the VM and boots properly, why wouldn't it do the same in an upgrade in a VM?

I am trying other methods and have been Googling it for hours.

Thank you!

Packets sent out the wrong Interface on Hyper-V 2012 Failover Cluster

$

Here is some background information:
2 Dell PowerEdge servers running Windows Server 2012 w/ Hyper-V in a Failover Cluster environment.  Each has:
1 NIC for Live Migration 192.168.80.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for Cluster Communication 192.168.90.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for iscsi 192.168.100.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for host management with a routable public IP (*connected to corp network) w/ gateway on this interface
1 NIC for Virtual Machine traffic (*connected to corp network)
All NICs are up, we can ping the IPs between servers on the private network and on the public facing networks.  All functions of hyper-v are working and the failover cluster reports all interfaces are up and we receive no errors.  Live migration works fine.  In the live migration settings i have restricted the use of the 2 NICs (live migration or cluster comm).

My problem is that our networking/security group sees on occasion (about every 10 minutes with a few other packets thrown in at different times) syn packets that are destined for the 192.168.80.3 interface goes out of the public interface and is dropped at our border router.  These should be heading out of the 192.168.80.x or 192.168.90.x interfaces without ever hitting our corporate network. Anyone have an idea of why this might be happening?  Traffic is on TCP 445.

Appreciate the help.
Nate

SQL 2012 on hyper-V

We have moved from vmware to hyper-V virtualization.

We have windows server 2012 and sql server 2012.
When executing some query on SQL server the CPU time is much greater than CPU time for the same query on the same sql server with the similar resources but on vmware virtualization.
(the query doesn't produce IO, since all data pages are in RAM - so, the problem is CPU)

I have tested the most simple queries as the most complex queries with the same execution plans on both servers. There is always similar difference in cpu time, couple of times slower.

Is there some well known configuration of hyper-v, which is optimal for running sql server on it? What should i check, any idea?

Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Linux Guest VLAN Settings lost after reboot

$

Hi Guys,

last night a have seen a strange behavior with a Sophos UTM 9.204020 Linux Guest VM. (This VM is based on SUSE SLES v11? i think)

So i have Setup this in my home lab and experienced the same problem.

----Setup-----

2 External VM Switches

Management OS is on VLAN 4093 with IP 192.168.20.1

The guest network adapter is in Trunk Mode, VLAN Tag (4093) is set in the guest OS with IP 192.168.20.100

Everything works until you kick off a reboot from the guest or hyper-v console, after the reboot you loose the connectivity on the network adapter with the vlan trunk.

If you shutdown the guest and start it everthing works again - this happens only on reboot!!

I have tried diffrent things (static mac, enable disable hardware features (vmq/offloading etc) on the vm network adapter but always the same error.

After some search on the net i have found this article: Link

This guy has the same problem with another linux vm (based on debian) his workaround was to trigger a powershell script with the eventlog after reboot of the vm, this works for me too but this must be bug?

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

André

Hi All

Can any one please advice me in right direction.

We had 2008R2 server running AD & DC and now i would like to install Hyper-v and a virtual machine with Windows 8.1 Pro on top of it.

Can it be added in to domain? Will there be any issues while sharing the drives, files & programs? Can the VM accessible

Add host to SCVMM 2008 R2 in Perimeter network

Hi,

I have a host that is in the domain, it's trying to convert a virtual machine that is not in a domain and I read that the Agent needs to be installed in perimeter mode to get around the kerbaros authentication.

The problem I have is that locally on the host when I try to install the agent it tells me the virtual machine manager component is not supported on this operating system.  The OS is Server 2008 SP1 Core.  Strangely I can however add the host in SCVMM 2008 R2 as a not perimeter host but I get a failure related to WinRM during the conversion.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can add the host in perimieter mode or if its even possible?  All documentation saya that the veriosn of OS the host is running is compatable

Thanks

Unable to change VM state - cannot turn off/on

Hi,

Had an issue today where shortly after a DPM backup started one of our VMs (the one being backed up) went offline (couldn't ping or access any services across the network). In Hyper-V manager the virtual machine appeared to be running and the status of the virtual machine showed "Backing up". When opening the virtual machine console it showed the Ctrl+alt+del screen but sending a ctrl+alt+del got no response. When attempting to shutdown or turn off the VM we were met with the error:

===================

"The application encountered an error while attempting to change the state of 'vmname'.

'vmname' failed to change state.

The operation cannot be performed while the object is in its current state.

================

In failover cluster manager the status of the machine showed as Running (locked). Same errors as in Hyper-V manager when trying to turn off the VM.

We stopped the job in DPM and even restarted the DPM server but no change.

We managed to turn off the VM by killing the instance of vmwp.exe that related to the VM. However we were then unable to start it as were still getting the above error. In the end we had to live migrate all our other VMs off the host and restart the host (had to press the button as the host hung on shutting down). The VM then fired up on the other host in the cluster.

Obviously this is a rubbish solution as we incurred an unacceptable amount of downtime waiting for the live migrations and host shutdown.

I've looked at other forum posts but can't see any suggestions other than the host shutdown. Ever come across this and have a fix or better workaround than restarting the host?

Thanks

VM Proxy server on Hyper-V performance slow.

I've a physical server ML350Gen8 with broadcom NIC as a window 2012-r2 hyper-v server. The Hyper-v have 2 VM (AD and Proxy).

The AD VM is installed with win2012 and the proxy VM(win2003) is a VM converted from vmware server.

First the ping value was high when perform ping to the VM. After disabled the physical and VM's VMQ the ping value low.

But I encounter after the proxy server converted to hyper-v VM, the client machine that connected to proxy server internet browsing is awfully slow.

It does not have performance issue when its on Vmware server. I setup a new VM as proxy server installed with linux but the performance for the client to browse internet is still slow.

Any Hyper-v setting that could improve the performance?

VM's Stuck in "Backing Up..." State

$

We are using System Center DPM 2012 SP1 to backup our Server 2012 Hyper-V Cluster and sometimes we have VM's that are stuck in a state of "backing up..." on the Hyper-V manager however DPM and the VSS Writers both say that the backups have failed. We are unable to migrate or shutdown the guest VM's that are stuck in this state.

So far the only workaround we have found is to fail all the VM's that are not in this status to another host, then kill the cluster service on the host with the stuck VM's to force them to migrate to another host which also causes an unexpected reboot of the guest.

I was wondering if there is any other method to cancel or get the VMs out of this state and/or fail them over to another host without having to kill the cluster service?

Integration Service Upgrade of 2012R2 breaks Windows 2012 VM

$

Hi,

we have setup a new server with Windows 2012 R2 and migrated our VM's over to it.

OS within the VM's are Windows 2008 Server, Windows 7 and Windows 2012.

Everything works fine. Integration Service Update was needed and I could install it on all VM's, except one, that also runs Exchange 2013 on a Windows 2012.

Once I install the Update of the Integration Service, the VM acts weird. It takes about 30 minutes until I could log in. (Probably network problem after the udpate). Once logged in, if I switch to desktop view, the task bar doesn't show items other than the clock, clicking it results in the question, if I want to end a hanging process no matter if I say yes/no no luck. Server Manager opens (very slow), but it doesn't load data (wanted to check nic).

CMD with ipconfig doesn't show a network adapter, just the tunneling-peudo-interface.

Load of the server doesn't show high CPU or Memory consumption, nor high disk i/o. Using Alt/TAB it shows a window called "Immersive Background" (tried to translate to english).

Starting the network manager via

control.exe /name Microsoft.NetworkAndSharingCenter

doesn't open it either. But I can open like Resourcemonitor, Powershell and quite some other programs.

So something is failing here after the update.

Does Exchange and the new Integration Service break each other?

I rolled back VM to an older snapshot and tried the same thing again, same result. On our Replication host, I did a Testfailover, with no network connectivity, everything fine, again, until new Integration service are installed/updated, the host seems broken.

So I have no clue what's happening here or where to start to search. The main problem is, that backups have to be done offline and not online until new integration services are up and running.

Any guess what to try or what breaks the new integration services? Or is it really in conjunction with Exchange?
We didn't upgrade the VM to 2012R2, just the root node.

Thanks

Patrick

Hyper-V Replica Stuck on Merge in Progress - No Percentage

$

Running Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 core on two machines.  Attempting for the first time to backup one VM from each Hyper-V Server to the other.

HV1 has a 1.5 Tb fixed VHDX that was approximately 1/4 used.  I initially attempted to start replication from HV1 to HV2 across the WAN, but realized that was going to take too long.  So I put HV1 and HV2 on the same LAN and restarted replication.

I also tried to replicate from HV2 to HV1 a 4 Tb fixed VHDX.  There was about 1.5 Tb used of the 4 Tb VHDX.

The VMs on both Hyper-V Servers have been shut down.  The files look like they copied from one Hyper-V Server to the other, but my HV1 has been showing "Merge in Progress" for over a week.  HV2 seems to have completed whatever it needed to do within 1-2 days.  There is an AVHDX file on HV1, but it is not obvious to me that is changing in size at all (either growing larger or smaller - as I assume should occur as part of the merge).

On HV1 the status shows "Merge in Progress" with several periods, which cycle between 1 and 5, but there is no other progress indicator.  I was expecting something to say X% completed?  It looks like something is going on.  The HDD indicator is on and I can hear a lot of disk activity on HV1.

I have tried rebooting HV1 twice to see if something was stuck, but that didn't seem to make any difference.  Shortly after the reboot both VMs on HV1 were back to "Merge in Progress" status.

When I look at the DIR output on either Hyper-V Server I see some slight changes in the amount of the HDD used, but not nearly as much as I would think given the amount of disk activity.

Given both Hyper-V Servers are on the same LAN right now my intention was to wait for the merge to complete before returning HV1 to its home and restarting replication across the WAN.

But this has been running for over a week.  Copying the whole VHDX shouldn't take more than a few hours, so I don't understand why a merge is taking so long.

Any ideas as to why this doesn't seem to be making any progress?

P.S.  Both Hyper-V Servers have a RAID hardware controller.  HV1 is running RAID5.  HV2 has a better controller and is running RAID6.

Hyper-v traffic being routed to perimeter firewall and subsequently blocked.

I have a two node Server 2012 R2 Hyper-v cluster built from SCVMM 2012 R2. I have created a virtual switch that is bound to a LBFO team (8 x 1GB Nics) on each host. Logical Networks are all defined with different VLAN IDs and subnets. I have created different vNics for the parent nodes for different cluster networks as follows:

Management: 10.226.208.128/26 (VLAN 100) - this is the only NIC with a default gateway.
Live-Migration: 172.16.2.128/26 (VLAN660)
Cluster-CSV: 172.16.3.128/26 (VLAN661)

Each of the host vNics that are connected to the virtual switch have VLANID's defined.

However I am seeing some strange behaviour with cluster network traffic being blocked by our perimiter hardware firewall as follows:

100: access-list ACL109 denied tcp DMZ/10.226.208.188(62786) -> LAN/172.16.3.133(3343) hit-cnt 1 first hit [0xba094209, 0x0]

(Here I would expect the TCP 3343 traffic to go from 10.226.208.188 directly to 10.226.208.187 or from 172.16.3.134 to 172.16.3.133).

HYPERVHOST1
vEthernet (Management: 10.226.208.187)
vEthernet (Live-Migration 172.16.2.133)
vEthernet (Cluster-CSV: 172.16.3.133)

HYPERVHOST2
vEthernet (Management: 10.226.208.188)
vEthernet (Live-Migration: 172.16.2.134)
vEthernet (Cluster-CSV: 172.16.3.134)

Any ideas what I am missing here?

How to manage a Hyper-V 2012R2 Host from Windows 7?

$

AFAIK This is the official Hyper-V Manager for Windows 7: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7887 it explicitly lists Hyper-V versions up to 2008R2, there is no mention of 2012 or 2012R2, and from trying to connect to my new Hyper-V 2012R2 I can confirm that it doesn't want to work.

From reading the docs on Hyper-V 2012/2012R2 remote management I've come to the conclusion that its only possible with Windows 8+ or Server 2012+ , but it cannot be used to manage Hyper-V 2008/2008R2...

Someone please tell me that this is just one big mistake on my part and that the product owner for Hyper-V at Microsoft is not this stupid...

I want to learn Hyper V

I have installed Windows 2012 DataCenter Edition

I am trying to create Windows 2008 R2 Server Virtual Machine. From this Windows 2008 R2 can i start learning HYper v, AD, DNS, DHCP?

Please advise how to learn virtualization with this? and how to learn by following the right path?
