SQL 2012 on hyper-V

We have moved from vmware to hyper-V virtualization.

We have windows server 2012 and sql server 2012.
When executing some query on SQL server the CPU time is much greater than CPU time for the same query on the same sql server with the similar resources but on vmware virtualization.
(the query doesn't produce IO, since all data pages are in RAM - so, the problem is CPU)

I have tested the most simple queries as the most complex queries with the same execution plans on both servers. There is always similar difference in cpu time, couple of times slower.

Is there some well known configuration of hyper-v, which is optimal for running sql server on it? What should i check, any idea?

What is normal range for CPU Wait time Per Dispatch on Hyper-V 2012

Hello.

I am trying to troubleshoot some performance issues with an application that utilizes sql server, which runs in a Hyper-V Guest.

I have found that the ram, cpu, disk i/o all appear to be within normal range.
Before troubleshooting the sql end of things, I wanted to make make sure the vm isn't waiting for cpu time.

In Vmware, the metric for this is " CPU Ready". From what I can tell, the equivilant to this for Hyper-V on server 2012 is:

Hyper-V Hypervisor Virtual processor\CPU Wait time per dispatch.

I have fired this up and been monitoring it and found that the average is around 22,000, maximum 41,000.

The problem is, I have no idea if this is a normal or acceptable range. I can't seem to find any further information on actually interpreting this data, as to what is acceptable and what will cause performance issues etc..

Can anyone help enlighten me further on this?

Thanks

VM Proxy server on Hyper-V performance slow.

I've a physical server ML350Gen8 with broadcom NIC as a window 2012-r2 hyper-v server. The Hyper-v have 2 VM (AD and Proxy).

The AD VM is installed with win2012 and the proxy VM(win2003) is a VM converted from vmware server.

First the ping value was high when perform ping to the VM. After disabled the physical and VM's VMQ the ping value low.

But I encounter after the proxy server converted to hyper-v VM, the client machine that connected to proxy server internet browsing is awfully slow.

It does not have performance issue when its on Vmware server. I setup a new VM as proxy server installed with linux but the performance for the client to browse internet is still slow.

Any Hyper-v setting that could improve the performance?

Remotefx questions

Hello, I would like to run anywhere from 24-30 vms in hyper-v with remotefx.

I read somewhere there was a gpu limitation with remotefx for up to 12 vms per graphics card while using remotefx.

Is this true?  If I wanted to run 24-30 vms in hyper-v I would need at least 2 graphics cards?

Any help is much appreciated

Virtualized IIS Web Layer

So we have a few physical servers running Hyper-V VM web servers.  I have several virtual directories in IIS that point to the host through a UNC path.  I do this because the virtual machines do not have enough space to run all content.  Is there a better way to access the data on the host other than a UNC path?

Right now the setup looks like this:

The host has a C drive for the OS and a D drive for the VMs and Content.  I would split these but I do not have enough drives at the moment to do this.

The VMs have a C drive.  The drive is physically located on the D drive of the host.

Thanks

Storage issues during live clone in Server 2012 R2

We just set up a new 2012 R2 cluster and we are having troubles with live cloning. I have seen it work in our environment but usually it fails.

We get this error in our cluster events:

Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume8' ('Volume8') has entered a paused state because of '(c0000435)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.

and the clone fails with:

Error (2916)
VMM is unable to complete the request. The connection to the agent ServerName was lost.

WinRM: URL: [http://ServerPath], Verb: [INVOKE], Method: [GetError], Resource: [http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/microsoft/bits/BitsClientJob?JobId={DC6D9530-26F1-4F95-A1AB-0197B1406F98}]

Not found (404) (0x80190194)

The storage is a Dell EqualLogic PS6500 and its connected to two S55 Force 10 48 port switches.  The client side of the network is hooked to two Cisco 2960G 48 port switches.

I can't find any information on error c0000435.  Has anyone head of this issue?

Stabilty Issues with Migrated VMWare Servers on Hyper-V 2012 R2

Hi

Has anyone who's migrated from vSphere to Hyper-v encountered issues with VM stability? We have a 12 node 2012R2 cluster and most of the VMs were migrated from VMWare 5 using various utilities (disk2vhd/starwind/etc).

It seems as if Server 2008-based VMs will now BSOD every once in a while. Virtual servers created from scratch do not have this issue. We've removed VMtools, we've removed anti virus, disabled VMQ for affected VMs, set the power options to high performance, updated integration services where needed... anything we can think of but a small handful of servers keep on doing it.

Its mostly server 2008 terminal servers which high specs and heavy workloads that this happens to. All we ever get is the bug check info in the minidump but we've made no hardware changes so I dont see how thats relevant to a VM.

Anyone encounter something similar?

Is it mandatory to enable hardware-assisted virtualization support in BIOS before installting Hyper-V Server 2012 R2?

Hi,

I recently installed Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 on my PC. CPU is i5 3rd generation and it supports hardware-assisted virtualization. However, I didn't realize that until after I finished installing the Hyper-V server.

I can still enable it in BIOS. The question is, if I enable the hardware-assisted virtualization support now, is it sufficient?

If not, do I have to enable this in BIOS and install the Hyper-V Server OS all over again?

Please clarify.

Thanks

Questions about 2008 Enterprise setup with 3 VM's

I have 2008 Enterprise edition running on a box.

I have 2011 SBS standard running on another box.

I want to move the 2011 SBS to VM on the 2008 box.

I want to make 2 more VM's and install 2008 standard (using the free licences from the 2008 Enterprise)

Does this sound right?

Hyper-v host went down during SAN maintenance!!!

Hi gents,

Yesterday we had a very odd issue during our scheduled SAN maintenance.

We are using Flexpod architecture in our Hyper-v environment, Netapp SAN, Cisco UCS blades and Nexus switches.

Last night when we shutdown the SAN for maintenance all Hyper-v hosts stopped working! even the OS, a few of them with blue screen! (we DO NOT use boot from SAN, each blade has its own disks). However QUORUM was up

Any Idea of what went wrong?

This was also supposed to be fixed in HV 2008R2 with a KB!

This is what I'm getting in eventlog:

Migrate non local Physical running Linux Servers, CentOS, to VHD to run in VM on Hyper-V

I am looking for the best method to migrate non local physical running Linux servers to run on Hyper-V.

The servers are running CentOS. They will need to be converted to VHD.

Is this possible? What's the best method if it is? Are there tools available to perform the migration, or to help?

I know there are some tools for migrating Windows Servers like Disk2VHD and SCVMM, but am not aware of anything for Linux that is not already in a VM and is not local.

Thanks,

Craig

Losing Access to Cluster Shared Volumes: Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('CSV Disk1') has entered a paused state because of '(c0000435)'

Hi,

Just built a Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V failover cluster connected to Equallogic 4110 storage arrays with latest firmware and HIT kits.
When creating a clone or vm from a template we see that the cluster loses access to the storage csv volume that is hosted on the equallogic storage with the following errors:

Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('CSV Disk1') has entered a paused state because of '(c0000435)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.

Can anyone shed any light onto this issue?
