Server 2012 Hyper-V and Direct RDP to VM

$

0

Here is my scenario.

Hardware:  Server 2012 R2 x64.  Two Host NIC cards.

Desired outcome:

1.  Able to Direct RDP to VM (Windows 7 Pro Named: Win7 Machine) from the internet.

2.  VM Needs to be able to access Hard drive on Host, as there is a very large database file on Host.

Here is how I have things set up, which is NOT working.  I will be the first to say I am new at the Hyper-V world, so can use some step-by-step process to fix things if at all possible.

Host Setup:

LAN1:  Static IP address obtained from my ISP.

LAN2:  Bound to Virtual Switch through Hyper-V

In Hyper-V Manager > Virtual Switch Manager settings below.

"Win7 Virtual Switch" is set to:  External Network, and the LAN2 adapter is selected.  Only Checked box is: Allow Management operation system to share this network.  Extensions has Microsoft Windows Filtering platform checked.

In the host VM settings (Hyper-V manager > WIN7 Machine > Settings > Network Adapter

Virtual switch is set to:  WIN7 Virtual Switch.   No other boxes checked.

In the VM Client (Win7 Machine), network adapter -- Below IP addresses are for example only and not my actual ip's.

I have tried both a public Static IP (Direct to the internet) i.e.  58.58.58.58  or one from the router w/port forwarding:  192.168.1.x.    Currently set to the public static ip.  The static IP I am using is not the same as the host's static, ie the host's static IP in LAN 1 is: 58.58.58.57.

Other info.

I can RDP into the host server without issue.

I have enbabled RDP in the client, and ensured port 3389 is open in firewall.  (I will change port # once I have things working).

I do not plan on having any additional VM's on this server.

I have not yet been able to directly access the Client VM from the internet

I can not see nor map the Host hard drive I need in this environment

There we go.  Any guides, ideas  will be greatly appreciated.

What is the best way to create High Availability for IIS server

$

Hi There

We have IIS 7 server that host our internal sites and one single server that host our external sites

We need to create a high availability for Internal server 1 and External Server 1

this server are migrated from Vmware to Hyper V and they are Windows Server 2008R2 64-bit OS.

For the High availability what is best for the IIS 7 servers? Fail Over Clustering or Network Load Balance?

Thanks

Unknown devices on Windows 2003 Virtual Machines

$

We have recently setup a Windows Server 2012 R2 environment, Hyper-V and Clustering.

Our existing environment is Windows server 2008 R2 / Hyper-V and Clustering.

We are experimenting with migrating VM’s from the old cluster to the new cluster, either using the cluster migration wizard or simply exporting VM’s / re importing VM’s

We are experiencing issues with Windows Server 2003 R2 virtual machines, we always end up with 2 unknown device drivers in the device manager, both are stating they are on the Hyper-V Virtual Machine bus, we have installed  the integration services on the VM’s, we have even on the existing ones removed any mention of the Integration servers from the registry and completing a fresh install but they still show up as unknown.  The strange thing is the device status is working properly, the VM functions correctly but I’m not happy going forward into production with unknown device drivers.

Windows 2008 guests are fine it’s only Windows 2003 guests, we still need to run a number of these legacy servers so upgrading the VM’s not an option.

Has anyone else come across the issue / fixed this issue?

Any advice?

What is SCSI Reservation? How to count how many i got now in my hyperv cluster?

hi guys, i am noob and please bear with me.

What is the SCSI resevation actually?  I only know if it reach the maximum, then hyperv cluster LUN may have some unexpected issue.   question:  how do i calculate how many i have?  and i guess i need to check with my storage folks what is the maximum.

i form 8 hosts into 1 cluster, and each LUN has 8 paths.  is there any formula for this?   e.e.g  8 hosts x 11 LUNs x 8 paths = 704 ???

Windows 2012 R2 Cluster blue screens with 0x20001 11 27384d on NTOSKRNL.EXE

$

The blue screen is occurring randomly on all four nodes of my newly created Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster.

Each Server:

  • HP BL465c Gen 8 (192GB/FC Connection to VNX)
  • All Drivers are current per HPSReports analysis by them
  • All EMC Drivers are up to date

Not all servers are rebooting at the same time.  They will sporadically do this with no event indicators of any failures prior to the event.  This appears to be a hyper-v memory management error which usually indicates bad memory or something like that, but this is extremely unlikely because the events are occurring on all four servers that are identical.  The only reason I can see this being the case is if I have some BIOS issue that is undiscovered as of it.  This can always be a possibility but HP has been pushing me to Microsoft because of the cross device consistency of this.

There simply is nothing in any log that shows a build up to this issue.

The other suggestion I am being given is to reinstall the server.  But that means the entire cluster as they are seeing the same thing.

There are references to this covering Windows 2008 R2 and one even shows a hotfix, but that isn't 2012 R2 and does not help as well.

Live Migration and Remote Desktop (Terminal Services)

From what I've read about live migration, it seems that network connections are maintained after the migration is complete.  If I am migrating a terminal server, will the user sessions be maintained or will they need to reconnect?

Failing Merge

Hi,

We have 2 snap shots on Hyper-V host which have now taken all the disk space. Some how one these got deleted (I don't know how, so don't ask) so everytime the client goes to start, it attempts to merge, this always fails with the following error....

HYPERV-0119100ErrorMicrosoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMSMicrosoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS-Admin29/07/2014 08:47:18

background disk merge failed to complete: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. (0x8007045D). (Virtual machine ID 6E95516C-9CB7-4E1A-89B9-A33EDB64670E)

So i am assuming this is down to disk space, So I have just spent many hours copying (Right click, copy & paste) the folder that is used to store the virtual machine data to a much larger disk.  (Tried to use export, but failed so did move)

The server now takes a very long time to start up, 30 minutes, but it does start up, with the merge failing. I would like to know if I have to change something in one of the config files? As the new vhdx runs on the new disk?

By moving all the files, I have also been able to free up data on the old disk, where the snapshot that is trying to be merged is located....

Any ideas, or any extra information you require?

Hyper-V Server 2012 - Intel ET2 quad nic install issues

$

I have Hyper-V server 2012 installed on a Dell R410 server.  The two built-in broadcom nic ports work fine with the OS and Hyper-V.

The Intel ET2 quad port card is recognised by the OS and is available in Hyper-V manager, but if any of the Intel ET2 ports are used with hyper-v, nothing happens.  No communications with the VM's.

The basic OS seems to be working fine with the Intel card.

I've experienced something like this with Hyper-V server 2008, and removing bindings and removing off load settings on the cards can get it working.  I;ve done that on this card and cannot seem to get it to work with Hyper-V server 2012.

Advice / trouble shooting tips welcome...

Add 3rd node to 2 node Cluster..

I currently have a 2 node hyper-v cluster with 2 hp servers and a hp storage array. I am going to be adding another node (same server specs) to this cluster but had a question about the heartbeat network. I wasn't the one that setup the original 2 node cluster. The current 2 nodes are connected directly for the heartbeat network with IP's of 192.168.202.10 and 192.168.202.20. How will I add the 3rd node to this cluster and make sure the heartbeats communicate? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!

VM cannot ping anything; looking for more troubleshooting ideas

our wsus server is running as vm on 2008 r2 in a failover cluster and we use scvmm.

we had an issue with the disk filling up.  we deleted data. we noticed some services would not start.  we rebooted.  After the reboot, it could not ping.  it had a static address.  it could not ping its gateway; destination unreachable.

I've tried the following

uninstalling network driver, shutdown, uninstall network card, readd network card

update hyperv integration svcs, uninstall network card, reboot

dhcp cannot get an address

moved to another node on the cluster

changed the hyperv network (thus changing Ethernet port on the physical server)

It maybe something within windows 2003 tho.  I think this cus I have other vms on the same network and clusternode that can ping.

Best method to NAT Hyper V host adapter to Hyper V Virtual Switch

$

I have a server with Server 2012 as a Hyper V host that is setup with a public IP address.  I wish to route all traffic from that public IP to serveral vm's that each host something different on different ports.  What would be the best method to do this?

I've looked at HNV, but don't know if that is the right solution.  I've also seen that people would setup a separate vm with 2 adapters, one for the external and one for the internal and then used RRAS, but I don't know if that would be the most effective solution.

Hi,

I backup all replica VM using Symantec backup , Once the backup start , The replication was suspended and set in failed state

as the below alert the status of replica VM is"Backing up..."

Hyper-V failed to replicate changes for virtual machine 'VMOOWEB' (Virtual Machine ID 24FB4E40-654D-4C8C-99EF-118033903B03). Hyper-V will retry replication after 5 minute(s).

'VMOOWEB' failed to perform the operation. The operation cannot be performed for this virtual machine while it is in its current state. (Virtual machine ID 24FB4E40-654D-4C8C-99EF-118033903B03)

Do you have any idea how to recover it ?

Unable to remove Virtual Switch

$

I changed our networking configuration on our Hyper-V cluster built on 2012 R2. However, I now need to remove the old switch but when I try to do so I get the following error message:

"Error applying virtual switch property changes. failed while removing virtual Ethernet switch. the virtual switch 'switch' canot be deleted because it is being used by ruing virtual machines or assigned to child pools."

I have checked all of the VMs running on the cluster and not a single one is connected to this switch anymore, I also have removed any checkpoints that I could find.

Is there a way to find what is still connected to this switch or is there another way of removing it?

Storage migration for virtual machine fails with general access denied error

Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V and SCVMM 2012 R2, SAN storage CSV volumes.

Error (12700)
VMM cannot complete the host operation on the <fqdn> server because of the error: Storage migration for virtual machine 'My VM' (78B1982B-69D4-4377-8BA8-C559391797E3) failed with error 'General access denied error' (0x80070005).

Migration did not succeed. Could not start mirror operation for the VHD file 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume14\VMMDisks\MYVM_disk_1.vhdx' to 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume6\MYVM_disk_1.vhdx': 'General access denied error'('0x80070005').
Unknown error (0x8001)

Recommended Action
Resolve the host issue and then try the operation again.

This happens only when migrating/moving individual disk/vhdx(allow VHDs to be placed individually) without moving configuration. If moving configuration at the same time with disks everything works just fine. I can even do a live migration from one cluster to another without problems..

Hyper-V Core vs. Virtual box on different drives

$

I recently decided to try out Hyper-V. I currently have a machine running Windows 7 with a couple Virtual Box VMs that run on it. I actually physically swapped the hard drive out for a new one, and then installed Hyper-V Core on the new hard drive. Afterwards, I swapped the old hard drive back in. Now when I attempt to start any of my VirtualBox VM's, I get an error that says "Error: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine".

I know that Hyper-V and Vbox don't coexist well in the same windows installation, but is there any way that me installing Hyper-V core on a different HD affected my system? All I could figure is that it changed some virtualization setting in the BIOS, but when I go into the BIOS settings, I can't find anything relating to virtualization (In my case it would be the AMD-V setting).

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling VirtualBox a few times to no avail, and I'm almost at my wits end. I know this may be more of a VirtualBox issue than Hyper-V, but wanted to see if there was any possible way the act of installing Hyper-V on a different drive could be causing the issue here.

I have Three node HyperV 2012 R2 Cluster. I have Guest that is Windows sever 2012 R2.  I have crated two Fibre Channel SAN for two  Qlogic  adapters. I have install multipath and required drives  to host and guest. Guest has  two virtual SAN  presented. I  see luns-a and so on… I can move   virtual machine  between hyper-v host without problem.   The only  thing that is bordering me, is that Live migration shut go without  stopping machine.  A lose about six ping.

These is what I can see  on target host, where I move machine.

I managed to import a snapshot and set the following properties of the import operation in class "Msvm_VirtualSystemSettingData" on WMI v2: "ConfigurationDataRoot", "SnapshotDataRoot", "SwapFileDataRoot" but I can't find the property related to where the Virtual hard disks will be imported.
