Migrating a Windows 2008 Server to 2012 Server VM

Hi Everyone,

Thought is would be straight forward, but did not realize there are so many ways to approach my new install:

We have a new Windows 2012 Server machine with the Hyper-v role installed.  I have an existing Windows 2008 Server machine that is running AD and DNS.  This server is used basically for file sharing, and runs a database program running MYSQL.  I wanted to migrate this server wih AD, DNS, and files to a Windows 2012 VM on the new 2012 host.   The database server will be on a second VM.  I would also like to use hyper-v replica for redundancy of these VM machines.

My concerns:  Should Active directory and DNS be on a VM.

Any suggestions and thoughts will be appreciated.

Need to install Hyper-V Management tools on Server 2012 VM

I need to install the Hyper-V Management tools onto a Server 2012 VM. However it won't let me install the management tools because it says hypervisor is already running. I've done this before from PowerShell but I can't remember the exact command that I used and it's driving me crazy. Anyone know how to install just the management tools on a 2012 VM?

Cannot enable VLAN on VM

Hi all,

I cannot enable VLAN identification for VM, when I try to apply I get message: "Error Applying Network Adapter Changes. The Operation on computer 'ServerName' failed.". Previously everything was fine.

In event viewer I see following error:

Event ID 95, Source: Hyper-V-VmSwitch

The VLAN configuration being set on port 036E9BF5-0646-4DC4-967C-B8E4A9A2FB29 (Friendly Name: External_ExternalPort) on switch 749C7BFE-0926-4957-9B95-5D24CE4B1225 (Friendly Name: LAN) is invalid. Reason: VLAN settings other than Access VLAN Id must be zero

The same situation if I try to uncheck 'Enable VLAN identification' on VM where VLAN was already set. Reboot didn't help. NIC firmware upgrade didn't help.

Host info: Dell PowerEdge R710, Two Broadcom NET Extreme II NICs inside NIC team created by BACS, HyperV 2012 Server OS.

How to figure this out?

.vhdx file not booting in Hyper-V

Hi all,

Using Windows Server Backup on a machine running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard I made an image of the whole machine (a .vhdx file) onto a USB drive.

I then plugged this USB drive into a machine running Windows 8.1 Pro with Hyper-V installed, mounted the .vhdx file and attempted to boot it - However upon starting the VM I get the error

Boot failure. Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot Device

The machine running Windows 8.1 Pro does have Virtulization enabled in the bios and the processor (an i7) supports Intel VT-x so these should not be an issue.

I've tried changing IDE settings, SCSI settings, BIOS boot order settings, nothing quite seems to work. Any help is appreciated.

Downloading Hyper-V Server 2012 R2

Hi,

I am trying to download Hyper-V-Server 2012 R2 from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-hyper-v-server-2012-r2. I am logged on with my Live ID, all the required fields are filled out automatically - but when I click "continue" nothing happens. The only effect is that I received an E-Mail with first steps after downloading Hyperv-V Server 2012 R2.

I tried different Browsers (Internet Explorer 11, Firefox and Opera) and also tried adding the website to compatibility view in Internet Explorer. Nothing changed.

What can I do? Is there any other possibility to download Hyper-V Server 2012 R2?

Thanks in advance,

Florian

Improve disk write performance to VM

I have a Scale-Out File Server (SOFS) acting as the storage for one of my test Hyper-V server.  All servers involved are running Windows Server 2012 R2 Update 1.

I'm noticing that when I copy a bunch of large files (several .iso images) directory to the SOFS's share (i.e.\\SOFS\share1), I get great and steady performance of about 90-100 MB/s (limit of my current 1 GbE connection).

The problem is when I copy the same .iso images to a VM's hard drive that is running on the SOFS's share (i.e. copy to\\VM1\D$ which is actually \\SOFS\Share1\DriveD.vhdx), I get really slow and very unsteady performance ranging from 10 MB/s to 50 MB/s (mostly at the lower end).

Reading from the SOFS, either directly or through the VM, gets awesome performance and is not an issue.  Only when writing to the VM on the SOFS.

I'm thinking the VM itself is the bottleneck.  Any suggestions on improving the disk write performance in the VM?

Thanks

Poor Performance over Converged Networks using LBFO Team

Hi,

I have  built a Hyper-v 2012 R2 cluster with converged networking and correct logical networks.

However, I notice that I am not able to utilise more than apprx 1gb over the converged network for live migration, cluster, management etc even though they have a total of 8 x 1gb physical adapters available (switch independant, dynamic load balancing).

e.g

Hyper-v host1 and hyper-v host2 have 4 x 1gb pNics connected to switch1 and 4x1gb pNics connected to switch2. Switch1 and switch2 has a portchannel configured between them.

I can see if I carry out a file copy between Hyper-v host1 and Hyper-v host2 (both configured exactly the same) then the Management, Live-Migration and Cluster vNics on the host use approx 300mbps on each vNic during the copy but never get anywhere near their full utilization (here I would be expecting to see approximately the total of the team available bandwidth which is 8gbps as there is no other traffic using these networks).

Is it because the host vNICs cannot use vRSS (VMQ)? Although I struggle to see this as the issue because I don't see any CPU cores maxing out during the copy! Or maybe someone could recommend anything else to check?

Host hangs after install Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012 R2 - Dell PowerEdge R720 and Xeon E5-2609

I have a brand-new Dell Servere, BIOS and other firmwares 100% updated and after the install of Hyper-V, the OS hangs in the Win logo and if i disable the Intel-VT, the OS loads again, with no problem.

There is a bug in the Xeon, maybe? BIOS version 2.2.3.

The .ISO used was MD5-Verified and it´s OK, it´s the new .ISO, with the April Update in it.

Advice on Setting up Exchange 2013

0
0

I put this in the Hyper-V forum because the questions I have are more related to overall Hyper-V config than Exchange. Since I am more familiar with VMWare, I do not know if the concept I have on Hyper-V is correct for Exchange. We have two Hyper-V hosts connected to an EMC SAN via 10GB iSCSI. On the SAN, we created the Storage Pool and LUNs to handle the Exchange 2013 databases and Logs. The Hyper-V environment already had a CSV for the various VMs and that seems to work nicely. We created the Exchange VMs in there as well. Now, to add the LUNs for the databases and logs, we also created CSV out of all those LUNs and then started to create virtual hard disks (.vhdx format) to fill up the LUNs. This was done through the Settings on the Exchange 2013 VMs using a SCSI controller.

So, my question is, should the databases and LUNs be CSVs or should we do this some other way that will allow the VMs to failover and still maintain a connection to the storage. I read about Pass-Through disks and iSCSI within the VM itself, but both of these seem to have either failover issues or performance issues. So what are my options here?

Thanks.

'VM name' could not initialize

I'm having trouble getting Hyper-V to work on my Windows 8.1 PC (apologies if I'm posting this in the wrong category, I couldn't find Hyper-V anywhere else). I'm trying to run the Windows Phone 8.1 emulator, but I get the error message "'VM name' could not initialize".

I'm using an Intel 4770K CPU, and I have about 5 GB of RAM available when trying to start a VM.

Here's what I've tried:

  1. Removing Hyper-V (Add or remove Windows features), restarting, Adding Hyper-V, restarting
  2. Disabling Hardware Visualization in Z87-A BIOS, restarting, enabling, restarting
  3. Removing the VMs
  4. Creating a new VM
  5. Updated BIOS
  6. Reset BIOS to factory settings
  7. Stopped & restarted Hyper-V service

I've had no luck so far. Hyper-V was working perfectly fine the last time I used it, which is about 2-3 months ago.

Some of the errors I could find in the Event Viewer (not in chronological order):

http://g2f.nl/0bg7psd

http://g2f.nl/0g250it

http://g2f.nl/0vsvxgv

http://g2f.nl/00obiml

http://g2f.nl/0vht6tm

There are no errors saying something about permissions or access denied.

I'd really appreciate it if you could help me fix this!

Full HyperV Backup - Symantec Backup Exec (any version)

I'm sure this will be a favourite topic, but I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on this situation.

We have a customer which has Server 2008 R2 with a .vhd which is 1.46TB in size, and a fixed disk.  They have only 150GB spare on the drive which seemed like enough.  We have had an occasional full HyperV backup to tape, but almost every other day it fails with the following in Backup Exec (now 2014):

"V-79-40960-38521 - Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on: "VRTSRV::\\HG-2008-STD\Hyper-V?Virtual?Machine\HG-2011-SBS". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
A virtual machine snapshot could not be created.  Use the Event Viewer on the Hyper-V host to identify the cause.  If the virtual machine is not properly configured, it may be necessary to use the Event Viewer in the virtual machine to identify the cause."

In the Event log of the Virtual Machine itself, there is only one VSS error, of which I'm told I can safely ignore, but resolved anyway:

"Error: NetLocalGroupGetMemebers(spfarm), 0x80070560, The specified local group does not exist."

I also have the following error on the physical host each time I run the backup:

"Failed to create the backup of virtual machine 'HG-2011-SBS'. (Virtual machine ID A5185ADC-F34B-4898-927C-784EBC23EA1B)"

Symantec say it's the VSS writers (apart from one support technician who admitted their product was a joke) but then Microsoft say it's Symantecs issue.  I'm inclined to believe Microsoft in this case, but I'm getting nowhere and our customer isn't getting a reliable backup of their whole vhd.

Is this due to only having slightly less than 10% free space on the physical host or just Backup Exec being its usual self?  Does HyperV REQUIRE that you have a certain percentage of space free on the physical machine to process?

Hi All,

During an environment setup for Hyper-V failover cluster testing, I tried installing Hyper-V role on 2008R2, and post role installation server got rebooted, but server doesn't give me login screen and keeps rebooting. I tried installing the role twice after uninstalling the role from safe mode but it didn't work for me. I also tried installing the latest graphics driver from vendor site but no luck. Considering it as installation disc issue, I also tried installing with another 2008R2 installation disk but same issue.

Same box works great with Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V role on it. Any thoughts?

the vm and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'

Hi,

I have the problem that when I start a VM with windows server 2012 on a hyper-v v2 host, it takes very long till the VM get bind the static or dynamic ip adress. I tried both, static and dynamic. In every case I see at the event viewer the following error:

the vm and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'

After a few minutes the VM gets bind the IP an everything works fine. But at the next time I reboot the machine the same failure appear.

Trying to use legacy network adapter results in the same problem. After this I tried to export the vm to a hyper-v v3 host. At first boot time
the problem didn't appear and the vm get's bind the ip adress without problems. Then after upgrading the integration services to hyper-v v3
version the same problem appears but without register it in the event viewer.

Does anybody know how I can fix this problem?

Kind Regards,
Marcus

Cannot connect to one Hyper-V machine from Hyper-V manager- all others are OK

Hey everyone

Have a slightly strange problem then I just can't seem to get a handle on:

We have three Full 2012 Servers running Hyper-V and two 2012 Hyper-V core servers. All servers store their VHD's locally (I know we need a SAN but that is not the issue here). I manage them all from the Hyper-V manager on my Windows 8.1 Pro laptop. Hyper-V manager is installed on all three of the full installs as well, and has all 5 servers in all 3 managers - so i can remote onto any of the three full servers when i am not here and manage any of my VM's.

I have one VM that is playing up and only one. It is our file server that is running 2008 server SP2. Basically, I can remote desktop to it, but no matter which Hyper-V Manager I use, I cannot open view it from there, It shows a thumbnail but when you try and connect to it, you get the "Cannot connect to the virtual machine....."

Now, this VM is around 5 years old and has been working fine for years. I moved the VM onto a 2012 Hyper-V core server last year and it was fine, (as are the other six VM's that run on this server) no problem at all, connected any way you wanted to, but now no chance - RDP or nothing :-(

So, I have: Restarted the laptop, tried all other Hyper-V managers we have installed with the same result, rebooted the VM - twice, and in an act of desperation, rebooted the host server as well, nothing worked, I still have this issue. My problem is that this is obviously a live file server and I can only reboot it VERY late at night so I don't want to but I really would like the Hyper-V manager to be able to connect to it.

Should point out that all other controls in the manager work OK i.e Shutdown, pause etc it is just the viewer that does not work on this one VM

If anyone could shed a little bit of light I would be most grateful :-)

Thank you in advance

Unable to remove Virtual Switch

I changed our networking configuration on our Hyper-V cluster built on 2012 R2. However, I now need to remove the old switch but when I try to do so I get the following error message:

"Error applying virtual switch property changes. failed while removing virtual Ethernet switch. the virtual switch 'switch' canot be deleted because it is being used by ruing virtual machines or assigned to child pools."

I have checked all of the VMs running on the cluster and not a single one is connected to this switch anymore, I also have removed any checkpoints that I could find.

Is there a way to find what is still connected to this switch or is there another way of removing it?

Hello. I have a HP DL380 G5 server & a have a problem. OS installation proceeds normally, the installation takes the role well, but the virtual machines is running weird. When using a network inside a virtual machine (for example, copy of iso file from the network to virtual machine) CPU inside of the VM at 100%. 50-60% is process System interrupts. All terribly slow, up until the copy end.Ido not know what to do.Maybesomebody facedwithsomething similar? Thnx!

VM backups reported as success by 2012.R2 Hyper-V host, but many VSS related application errors on VM

0

Not sure if this is the right place to post this one I think I have an issue with the interaction between a 2012.R2 host Hyper-V VSS writer and the VM VSS components on an SBS2008 based VM.

I have a Windows 2012.R2 Hyper-V host running three VMs. VM OS are one SBS2008, one 2008 Server with SQLExpress instances, one 2012.R2.  Veeam is our current backup solution and is configured to run application aware backups.  The Veeam backup completes without error reports (Veaam uses Hyper-V VSS to request VMs to prepare snapshops).  However, in the SBS2008 VM, there are many  Event ID1 Source SQLVDI, EventID 24583 Source SQLWRITER and EventIDs 3041 and 18210 sourced from each SQL instances.  All the VSS writers involved in the backup are left in State [9] failed with Last error: No error. The 2008 and 2012.R2 OS VMs have no event log errors.

A Windows Server Backup (Full VSS) run within the SBS2008VM completes successfully with no event log errors in the VM

An online Windows Server Backup (Full VSS) from the Hyper-V host of the SBS2008VM completes successfully, but with an even more extensive set of errors as per the Veeam backup.

The hosts are Domain joined, the Hyper-V host is not on the domain. All integration tools are 2012.R2 level. I've spent several days trying to apply various solutions for the SQLVDI errors as suggested in various MS and other sources on the web.

Would appreciate any guidance in what further troubleshooting I can do.

Thanks
