Importing Virtual Machines
Certificate-based 2012 R2 Hyper-V Replication (powershell)
I have certificate-based replication working between two Server 2012 R2 workgroup servers. Through Hyper-V Manager I can resolve any issues with replication, particularly in the scenario where I failover and wish to reverse replication. Take a DR scenario where I the primary goes offline, I initiate failover, start the replica VM, and wish to reverse replication after the primary has come back online following the power simulated power loss, but via powershell. I'm missing a key step, but I don't know what.
1. PRIHOST goes down and the VM REPME1 is now offline.
2. On REPHOST, I initiate start-vmfailover and start-vm REPME1.
3. Power is restored to PRIHOST and is back up. VM REPME1 is in the inventory but powered off. PRIHOST remains the Primary for replication. REPHOST is still the Replica. Replication has failed, which is expected.
4. I try to reverse replication with set-vmreplication -reverse, but I get an error "Could not reverse replication for virtual machine 'REPME1'. (Virtual machine ID ...) The operation cannot be performed while the virtual machine is in its current state. The name of virtual machine is REPME1 and its ID is ...
5. When I reverse replication in the Hyper-V Manager immediately following it synchronizes back the changes successfully and replication returns to normal.
I suspect that I'm missing a step.

HyperV Failed Logins from SBS Guest NTLM
Hello , i have noticed failed login attempts on our Hyper-V host from the SBS guest. The Hyper-V is in a work-group where as the SBS 2011 is the DC for the network. I have found that every minute there would be a failed login attempt made from the SBS to the Host.
I have attempted to troubleshoot this issue by tracking down Process ID's and ports disclosed in the event logs. I found that the logins are over microsoft-ds Protocol on port 445. The process executing these logins is a system process so my guess a service is attempting to access something on the HV without the correct credentials but I am finding it difficult to determine what. Please could anyone shed some light on my issue.

Migrating a Windows 2008 Server to 2012 Server VM
Hi Everyone,
Thought is would be straight forward, but did not realize there are so many ways to approach my new install:
We have a new Windows 2012 Server machine with the Hyper-v role installed. I have an existing Windows 2008 Server machine that is running AD and DNS. This server is used basically for file sharing, and runs a database program running MYSQL. I wanted to migrate this server wih AD, DNS, and files to a Windows 2012 VM on the new 2012 host. The database server will be on a second VM. I would also like to use hyper-v replica for redundancy of these VM machines.
My concerns: Should Active directory and DNS be on a VM.
Any suggestions and thoughts will be appreciated.
Why one should not edit a VM disk when the VM has got snapshots?
Hi Buddy's,
I have one VM named "abc" with base disk abc.vhd and one snapshot "abc_snap" . So after taking the snapshot my VM "abc" started pointing out to the new disk "abc_snap.vhd" . But when I try to edit this new disk in the Hyper-V VM settings wiard , I can get to see some warning message like "Edit is not available because checkpoints exist for this virtualmachine" and "Edit" button will be in disabled mode. My first question here is "Why should not I edit a disk when the VM has got snapshots" . In my case "abc_snap.vhd"
But Actually there is a powershell comandlet "ReSize-VHD" allows me to edit the disk even when the VM has got snapshots with it. Its usgae is "ReSize-VHD -Size 10 GB -Path abc_snap.vhd" (I am trying to resize it from 5GB to 10 GB in my case).
And with this commandlet I expanded my vhd to new size and powered on that VM and everything so far so good no issues I faced.
So my second question is "why is this in-difference between UI functionality and the commandlet functionality?"
guys please help me out here to understand the concept correctly
Thanks in advance.

Retrieve data from AVHD
We tried merging a restored AVHD with VHD and it worked but the SQL was currupt.
We tried to try merge again on the Backedup VHD and the merge progress screen closes as such and then after give an error "invalid parameter " if we try merge again. We noticed that the VHD file creation date is changing to current date.
Now we are looking to retrive sql data from AVHD, is there any utilities.
Error When Starting VM Failed to create memory contents file
Hi,
I"m experiencing issue with a VM that has previsoulsy been snapshotted. The snap shots have been since deleted via the Hyper V Manager. The snap shots were not applied to the VM. Also no .avhd files have been deleted via Windows Explorer
When I start the VM I get the following error message.

Hyper-V replica breaks when migrating VM's from Windows server 2012 Hyper-V cluster to Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-Vcluster
HI Experts,
I have an issue with Hyper-V replica while migrating replica VM's from Windows server 2012 cluster to 2012R2. basically the replica breaks when i live migrated a replica VM from Windows 2012 cluster to a new 2012 R2 clustered host. when i checked the eventviewer it is still looking at the old Hyper-V host in 2012 cluster where the replica VM resided before and is failing to resume replication as it cannot find the replica VM in the old 2012 Hyper-V host . I was advised that Microsoft hasd enabled the functionality to allow replica VM's to continue replication when migrated from Windows 2012 to Windows 2012 R2 to enable seamless upgrades but i cannot see this working in practice for us. We have a replica broker configured on the new 2012 R2 cluster as well. Any help is appreciated.
Kind regards,
Logesh
Windows 2012 hung on rebooting after installing hyperv
I have laptop Dell Inspiron 1526 with the following hardware
Processor: AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual-Core TK-57 1895 Mhz according to AMD web site http://www.amd.com/uk/products/notebook/processors/athlon-x2/Pages/athlon-x2-dual-core-features.aspx it supports virtualization
Memory: 4GB RAM
Hard Disk: C = 100 GB, D = 132 GB
Wireless Network Card: Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-Card
Laptop is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 installed on the C drive and I attached VHD (Windows Server 2012) on the D drive and configured dual boot.
I booted into Windows Server 2012 Datacenter Evaluation and installed it and it runs well.
I updated the BIOS to the latest version and enabled AMD-V and No-Execute enable bit in the BIOS
Completely shut down the laptop and disconnected power cord and battery.
I installed Hyper-V role and it rebooted but after starting it hung on before showing the log in screen and I had to hard boot and I tried to use all logging configuration none of them worked except safe mode I checked event viewer and I found the following error
DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start service ShellHWDetection with arguments "Unavailable" in order to run the server:
{DD522ACC-F821-461A-A407-50B198B896DC}
I applied the registry posted in this question http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowsserver2008r2virtualization/thread/4210cf5f-6735-4c88-815e-aed56836a8c2 but it did not work.
Can anybody help me out find what is the cause of the problem and how to resolve it?
Thanks.

2008 R2: Authorization Manager Permissions do not apply
I used authorization manager to modify the initialstore.xml.
I created a new role definition to allow techs to manage vms. Start, Stop, Reconfigure VMs. All View Options. and some more.
I created a new role assignment and added the the technician ad group
I closed the file.
Hyperv manager still shows you do not have required permission. contact the admin of the auth policy.
Am I missing a permission that they need or is the policy not applying to Hyper-v. The changes persist when I close and repopen the xml file.
We do use failover cluster and scvmm for this hyperv instance, if that matters.

VM cannot ping anything; looking for more troubleshooting ideas
our wsus server is running as vm on 2008 r2 in a failover cluster and we use scvmm.
we had an issue with the disk filling up. we deleted data. we noticed some services would not start. we rebooted. After the reboot, it could not ping. it had a static address. it could not ping its gateway; destination unreachable.
I've tried the following
uninstalling network driver, shutdown, uninstall network card, readd network card
update hyperv integration svcs, uninstall network card, reboot
dhcp cannot get an address
moved to another node on the cluster
changed the hyperv network (thus changing Ethernet port on the physical server)
It maybe something within windows 2003 tho. I think this cus I have other vms on the same network and clusternode that can ping.

Hyper-V Server 2012 with Zambezi AMD FX-Series - Hardware assisted virtualization not present
Hi, I'm trying to set up VDI across Windows Server 2012 VMs running on Hyper-V 2012.
The wizard's compatibility check for the Virtualization Hostserver failed with "Hardware-assisted virtualization is not present on the server".
I'm running an FX-8120 CPU and have the ASUS M5A97 motherboard.
I know I'm supposed to enable No-Execute (Hyper-V Hardware Considerations) but Icannotfind that or any other synonyms of it in my motherboards UEFI BIOS (NX, XD, EVP, XN... nothing).
I found this:
PAE/NX/SSE2 Support Requirement Guide for Windows 8
which in short says "Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 requires that systems must have processors that support NX, and NX must be turned on for important security safeguards to function effectively and avoid potential security vulnerabilities."
this leads me to believe NX is on by default if I was able to get this far and install Hyper-V 2012 and Windows Server 2012..
Also I tried to disable AVX in cmd with "bcdedit /set xsavedisable 1". Did not resolve
My processor is Zambezi FX-8120 and also supports RVI/SLAT:
processor:
Newegg Processor FX-8120
support proof:
AMD Processors with Rapid Virtualization Indexing Required to Run Hyper-V in Windows® 8
What going on here? I bought this CPU specifically after I had the same problems with an older AMD Athelon II and made sure to buy one with AMD-V and RVI.
I'm aware my MB is not a server motherboard, but I was trying to spend as little as possible to retrofit my home rig into a lab deployment. I've read a VMWare thread where someone successfully set up nested virtualization using ESXi5 with an FX-8120 and a cheap
$65 Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 ... Hyper-V has been a pain the whole way through from setting up remote management and now this.
If someone suspects it's my MB can you also make a suggestion as to what features I should be looking for in a new one? NX, IOMMU, some other virtualization feature?
If you've had similar set up, perhaps recommend an MB? Not looking to spend that much $150 max.
Thank you

Unwedging VSS after aborted back-up or restore
I'm developing a tool for Hyper-V back-up and restore. During development, I'm perodically in the situation where the tool has a bug and doesn't clean-up its VSS context correctly. This seems to leave VSS wedged. For example, after this happens, using the sample tool from the SDK:
>vshadow.exe -q
VSHADOW.EXE 3.0 - Volume Shadow Copy sample client.
Copyright (C) 2005 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
(Option: Query all shadow copies)
ERROR: COM call "m_pVssObject->InitializeForBackup()" failed.
- Returned HRESULT = 0x80042302
- Error text: VSS_E_UNEXPECTED
- Please re-run VSHADOW.EXE with the /tracing option to get more details
In response, I can do a sc stop vss & sc start vss and that fixes the issue. But I'm wondering if there's an VSS API sequence I could use to reset things to a known state without having to start and stop the service (and without having the original client context object). It's a minor point, since I'm obviously trying to architect the tool so that this doesn't happen, but it would be nice to have this as a fall back for testing and support.
Also, I realize that this question isn't specific to the Hyper-V VSS writer, but I didn't see a VSS-specific group. If someone knows of one, I'll be happy to take this there.
Thanks.
2012 r2 file backup causes all VMs to go in to "backing up"
PVLANs External Access
Hi,
I have some VM's configured with different PVLAN's in different modes (I,C,P). Should I be able to talk to the outside world from the VM's?
Does the switch connecting my Host Server to my router need to be configured in way such as VLAN Trunk?
Kind regards
