Hyper-V Replication fails across a VPN

$

I set up Hyper-V replication between two servers (Server 2012 Standard, and Hyper-V Server 2012) on the same subnet. Using Kerberos authentication on port 80, replication worked perfectly on site. I then moved one server offsite (different AD site with different subnet) that is connected by a site-to-site VPN. Hyper-V Replication is only working in one direction. In the opposite direction, I keep getting this error:

Enabling Replication Failed. Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'MACHINENAME': The connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0x00002EFE).

I haven’t had much luck searching on this error.

-No bad entries in DNS
-Domain Controllers with DNS are available in each site.
-Sites and Services, and their subnets are set up correctly
-No Routing problems, both sites can “talk” to each other, each server can ping each other by name
-The windows server firewalls are off
-Remote desktop and remote management are working from server to server.
-The VPN should not be blocking any ports or services, AFAIK.
-Port scanning shows 80 and 135 are open on each side.

I'm making my site-to-site VPN with Cisco hardware to Sonicwall hardware. Anything I should look for in my VPN config? Ports? Any help is appreciated.

Hi,
how can i uninstall LIC from a linux ( centos 6) VM ?

When i start upgrade script to upgrade from old (not sure which version, server is inherited from a admin not present here anymore) to latest, linux OOM manager pops up and starts killing processes and stops the upgrade. I wanted to remove/install LIC.

Good day everyone,

We currently have 9 servers running our network. Office 360 E1 Plan, which includes SharePoint and Email. My goal is eliminate physical server and try and utilize servers with hyper –v.
New Server:
HP ProLiant DL360p Gen8 Server
2 X Intel® Xeon® E5-2660 (2.20GHz/8-core/95W)
32GB PC3L-10600R 4x8GB 2Rank Memory
P420i Smart Array Controller 1Gb 4-port 331FLR Ethernet Adapter
4 X HP 300GB 6G SAS 15K
4 X HP 146GB 6G SAS 15K

This Server Will be replacing the Domain Controller and File and Print using Hyper -v. I know it’s never recommended to have anything with your domain control, but given the specifications of this server and a maximize clients of 60 users. I pretty confident it will be able to handle the load. My first question is.  What would be best for this scenario? (Would prefer to have a graphical interface but running Core versions can work too if it’s a must)

Should I break the Cores and Ram evenly into each VM or would it be better to boost more into one and the other?
Here is one Array Setup I was thinking of. Suggestions?

Raid Setup:
Array 1 – Raid 1+0 - 4 X SAS 146GB
Partition break down:
HDD0 - 60 GB for OS (Windows enterprise Server 2008 Rc2 X64)
HDD2 – 40 GB Hyper-V File(Domain controller)
HDD3 – 40 GB Hyper –V File (File and Print)
HDD4 – Remaining for Logs

Array 2 – Raid 10 – 4 X SAS 300GB ( Raid 10 for File Server)

Current infrastructure:

8 X servers - Windows 2003 R2
60 X Windows 7 bit OS client systems
65 X Email accounts (Running on Cloud services Office 365)
2 X Vlans (network and Wireless for Barscanning Devices)
1 X Firewall/router
4 X Cisco Switchs @ 100MB
Fiber Line to ISP

Servers and  Roles:
Domain Controller – (AD,DNS, DHCP and WINS) - ProLiant DL360 G5
File and Print -  ProLiant DL360 G5
App Server – Used for ERP Software – ProLiant DL360 G5
WeB/Print – Used for ERP Software - ProLiant DL360 G5
DB Server – Used for ERP Software - ProLiant DL360 G5
Monitoring System – Proliant ML 110
WDS - IBM X3650
Test Server - IBM X3650

Hello!

I have a question about vm replication in hyper-v core. Is there someone who test it out on hyper-v core. Is it working like full version or i must have full version to make replication working. If someone have experience with this please post.

Hello,

I have a server, which run the separting servers (1 windows 2008 r2 server core and the other is windows 2008 r2 enterprise). i tried to connect the server core from the hyper-v manager by entering the ip address of server core, it gave me this error:

"An error occurred while attempting to connect to server x.x.x.x. Check that the virtual machine management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server"

how to go about solving this error?

VMs with same SID

Hi guys,

I have an environment with Hyper-V 2008 R2. So far when generating a new virtual machine, performing an import with the option to copy because I thought this created a new SID of the machine, but I see that this is what generates a new GUID, internal identifier of the virtual machine to Hyper-V.
So I launched the utility PsGetSid in my virtual machines and actually I see that they have the same OS match the SID.
I have a problem!
This happens to me in OS 2003 R2, 2008 and 2008 R2.
I have seen that I have two options:
- NewSID (but not supported by Microsoft)
- Sysprep.

With sysprep I have doubts about how it will work. VMs are domain members and installed applications.

What steps you recommend me to? I have to have something important to consider sysprep?

Thank you very much.

An error occurred when trying to register for IME

Hi,

Connect to a remote 2008 server running Hyper V with 3 VM's running.  The VM's are running fine and I can connect to each using third party remote desktop software.  Recently, however, this is the only way I can connect as when I select "connect" in Hyper-V I am getting an error as follows:

Virtual Machine Connection

An error occurred when trying to register for IME events for '<VM name>'.

The operation on computer ;localhost' failed.

Solutions I have found seem to relate to remote policy issues but I can't see this being the case here(and it has only recently started doing this!).

Can anyone help?

Time on a hyper V VM won't stop updating

Hello all,

Problem:

I'm running server 2008 R2 for my hyper-v host. One of my VM's on it, also running server 2008 R2, will not stop updating its time. Currently the server is running VOIP services for a very small phone system and I'm having the VOIP company look into things on there end but they do not believe that it is their problem. The server is not apart of the domain and I can't make it part of the domain now that the phone system is up and running or so says the company I'm working with. In event viewer I get a Kernel-General ID 1 event every ... well a lot, it looks like there is some kind of a pattern to it, for example 11:54:22.37867 to 11:54:22.38100 to 11:54:57.21478 to 11:54:57.217000 to 11:55:32.47592 to 11:55:32.47800 and it continues on and on, it doesn't appear to stop ever.

Things I have tried:

I have tried turning off time synchronization in integration services with no luck. I tried to disable synchronizing with an Internet time server. I have also tried changing the server that I'm updating with. I tried changing the time frame that the time is suppose to update through the registry. That is the basics of what I have tried and what I can remember at this point.

Any thoughts would be great.

Thanks

Losing pings only within a Hyper-V cluster.

Good day.

We are experiencing an issue on our VMM based private cloud where pings are failing only for VMs running within the private cloud. We can ping servers on the rest of our network with no apparent issues. We can even ping the cluster nodes that host the private cloud VMs without issues. When we try to ping the VMs though we note between 1%-3% in missed pings.

We've tried a couple of tests to try and isolate this to see if it could be related to our older, non-IPv6 aware, hardware switches but have not seen any significant change in the behavior. One test we attempted was to take the NIC connections for one of the nodes that are connected to the vSwitch that the VMs are running on and place those two connections on a different physical switch to see if this was some kind of address space issue from the switch perspective. This test resulted in no change to the behavior and the ping loss of 1-3% continued.

At this point we suspect that this is a configuration issue on our part, but we're not having much luck figuring out how to best troubleshoot this issue. Are there any statistics we should be looking at from the VM, vSwitch, or Hyper-V level that might help us better identify the root cause of this issue?

We are running an 8 node Windows 2008 R2 SP1 cluster with several post SP1 patches loaded on it. We are also running SCVMM 2012 Update 2. The VM networks are running off of a pair of teamed Broadcom NICs on each host with a separate set of teamed NICs for all of our iSCSI and Cluster network.

Any input or thoughts would be appreciated.

Redirecting com port to named pipes on Server 2008

Just finished a NEW build of (1) SBS2003R2, (2) Webserver & (3)PABX
Server... on Server2008 WVS
Box HPDL 380 G5 6GB ram, raid1 37GB, raid 5 350GB
Server 2008 WVS Enterprise
Virtual
SBS2003R2 x86
Server2008Web x64 (WEB)
Server2008Web x64 (PABX)

This has been up for 8 days, I am testing continuosly, NO hickups,
install of SBS very fast, and after installing VM tools, extremly fast
and responsive. BUT

I need one Com port for my fax modem on the SBS server.

So I set the com port on the VM to \\.\pipe\com1

Now I have to do the corresponding on the Host server.

I tried to use WINdbg with the code of windbg -b -k comStick out tongueipe,port=\\.\pipe\com_1,resets=0 ,

I did not work, which I expected, the problems is I can't find any relevant documentation on how to do this.

It would be extremly helpful if we would have a driver from MS for this, or is there one?

Many thanks

CSV stuck in redirected access...

We are running Windows Datacenter 2008 R2 SP1 in our Failover Cluster, on 3 Hyper-V hosts, using Commvault to backup the vhds.  There was a backup in progress that I killed from the Commvault server and that ended properly.  Now the CSV is stuck in "Online (Backup in progress, Redirected Access)" mode.  I cannot "Turn off redirected access for this CSV" either and I can't "Move this shared volume to another node" as I am told "Backup in progress.  Please wait for backup completion before trying this operation again."  But the backup is no longer running so I am stuck.  I also checked for disk shadows and there are not any.  How can I clear this up with taking any of the VMs running on this CSV offline?  Thanks.

Thin Clients

Hi,

I'm wondering what roles are required to roll out thin clients company wide.

Currently running Windows Server 2008 r2 Enterprise, with Hyper-V role.

Provided I have the Desktop OS licenses, and enough resources available on the host server, I can create any number of desktop VMs on the server, correct? Do I require any roles other than Hyper-V enabled? Is there a limit to the amount of VMs that can be accessed at once (not multiple people to 1 VM, they'll be 1:1, one person to one VM - but is there a maximum amount of people allowed to connect to the server's Desktop VMs at once)?

Thanks,

Jason

Hyper-V replication

Hi,

I've enabled replication and all appears to work correctly.  So I have tried an unplanned failover and intiate it from the Replica Server.  This appears to be fine as well.

The issue that occurs is that it seems to break the DNS on the VM, which also happens to be a Domain Controller.  What happens is the Forwarder the ISP has provided can no longer be resolved; 8.8.8.8.  Root Hints resolve correctly but using either provided DNS addresses provided by our ISP 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 don't resolve.

Haven't ran into the issue until using the Failover for Hyper-V replication so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Trouble with Remote File Browsing on Server 2012 core

$

I'm trying to remotely manage a server core installation with Hyper-V Manager but whenever I try to create or import a VM, the remote file browser comes up empty and just says 'No items match your search'.

What's strange is that this seems to work fine if I connect to the 2012 server from my Windows 7 desktop or a 2008R2 server but fails if I'm connecting from a Windows 8 system or another 2012 server.

I'm also fairly certain that this was working from a remote 2012 server until I installed the server-gui-mgmt-infra feature on the Hyper-V server but I'll need to reload the server to confirm that. (uninstalling the feature didn't fix the problem so it may not be related)

Is there any good documentation on understanding/troubleshooting remote file browsing or has anyone experienced this before?

Hyper-V guest system caused NIC connectivity issue

$

I am doing a forensics investigation into an error that occurred on our Host Hyper-V Server.

A Domain Controller running W2K8 w/ SP and using Hyper-V lost its network connectivity so that I could not access the DC via RDP (network connectivity was lost). The only method of gaining access to the DC was via KVM attached to the box.

This seemed to occur because of the virtual NIC used by Hyper-V Network Manager.  When I removed the Network Manager for the Hyper-V server, connectivity was restored (after a DNS refresh).

Before I build a new Net Mgr and deploy it on the DC (Host server), I'd like to understand what happened so as to prevent this issue from occurring again.  Any ideas?

Thanks, Jesse

Single vCPU v dual for virtual desktops

We are trying to make decision re. the default virtual desktop configuration. According to available information, multiple virtual CPUs can actually decrease results of CPU-intensive stress tests. I don't know whether such tests accurately represent intensive use of VDI. There are scenarios where multiple vCPUs bring material benefits - like http://blogs.citrix.com/2011/10/23/will-2-vcpu-desktops-improve-your-uptime/.

I have been running virtualised environments for years and the first action that I take with underperforming virtual server is adding a vCPU. VDI vendors and consultants tend to recommend starting with one CPU and then scale if there's particular requirement or situation. But I don't like incident-based performance management. I'm interested in the forum's practical experiences please?

Hello World

I have successfully installed SharePoint 2010 Information Worker Demo Virtual Machines on a Windows Server 2008R2 with Hyper-V machine. However, when I attempt to login with the default Username/Password (Contoso\administrator\pass@word1) credentials provided by the Microsoft script it fails. How do I change or manage the Username/Password for the Virtual Machines?

Windows 8 Guest slows down when not in use - Hyper-V Core 2012

$

I recently switched from Hyper-v Core 2008R2 to Hyper-V Core 2012, and ever since I have problems with a Windows 8 VM.

The server runs a Windows Server 2008R2 standard VM and a Windows 8 Pro VM. Both have sufficient resources availalbe (it's run on a Core i5 2500 with 8GB of RAM), and I have not seen either of them requesting more resources (they are both allowed to request more RAM).

Since the switch to 2012, the Windows 8 VM has been slowing down when not in use. It goes to the point that if I connect to it, it takes a minute before it responsive. It even takes a while before I get see the desktop.

The Windows Server 2008R2 on the other hand still runs as smooth as before.

This would not be such a big issue if the W8 machine did not have applications running that need access to the network an copy large amounts of data. The network connection is frequently dropped while in "slow" state, and will continue to do so until I connect with remote desktop or the hyper-v manager.

It almost looks like some sort of power saving mode. I don't mind this, but it should be able to accomplish automated tasks.
