Weird Hyper-V Network Issue

$

Hi,

We're having a very odd and elusive networking problem with a Hyper-V 2012 R2 server.

Shortly are upgrading all our servers to Server 2012 R2 and migrating to Hyper-V 2012 R2 users started to notice that Outlook would disconnect and redirected documents would become inaccessible randomly at varying times throughout the day.

After some troubleshooting we managed to isolate the following behaviour.

Pings to the VM's drop off first followed shortly by pings to the Hyper-V host.

The packets are dropped for a period of around 2 minutes intermittently around 1-2 times per day.

The timing seems completely random.

Neither the VM's nor Hyper-V host register any loss of network connection.

VM's can not talk to each other over the vSwitch whilst the problem is occurring.

Normal service resumes after usually around 2 minutes or so.

Nothing seems to be logged in the event log on any of the machines to do with network issues. The only trace we can find is EventID 2070 been logged on the exchange servers application log to say that the DC is unavailable. And on the domain controller/file server we can see LDAP session time outs and SMB handles been scavenged.

The server is running on a ML350P Gen8  (Broadcom NIC) - All firmware and drivers have been updated.

All servers are up to date with all the latest updates.

We have also tried a second Intel based NIC but this has made no difference as did swapping all network cables and the switch.

There are currently 4 VM's connected to a single vSwitch which is linked to a dedicated port on the Intel NIC - management is not allowed through this interface but is done through the second interface on the Intel NIC.

Has anyone come across this before? It is causing a lot of problems with the client and we are very close to rebuilding the Hyper-V host with an earlier version of Windows server.

Thanks,

Richard.

Hello,

Here is the issue, I am trying to remove a hyperV machine and store it on a external Hard Drive. I have turned off the VM and went to move. In the Wizard i choose Move Virtual Machine and then choose a VM that is on my computer. When i choose it, i get the following error.

When i choose "Move Virtual machine's storage" and choose "Move all of the virtual machines data to a single location". I get this error:

Please help, i dont know what im doing wrong. The VMS are off. I dont know what other specs you would need.

Online Backups of VMs Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V with DPM 2012 R2

I have a few 2008 R2 VMs on 2012 R2 Hosts that I'm unable to perform online backups for. They were originally capable, but now offline is the only available option.

I've gone through the following checklist and everything appears to be in order:

  • The Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is disabled or not installed.
  • A virtual machine has one or more dynamic disks.
  • A virtual machine has one or more volumes that are based on non-NTFS file systems.
  • In a cluster configuration, the virtual machine Cluster Resource Group is offline.
  • A virtual machine is not in a running state.
  • A Shadow Storage assignment of a volume inside the virtual machine is explicitly set to a different volume other than itself.

Is there something else I can look into to see why Hyper-V has determined this is no longer an option for the VM? I've also, moved and recreated the VM using the same disks.

Trust relationships - not a valid Windows Domain name

Hello everyone,

Before i begin, i would like to state what i am working with:

Windows server 2008 R2 (on both domains). Both are HyperV machines

Beyond that, not must else. I took over a new network system and I'm still trying to figure it out. I'm not a network person but I'm learning quickly about it.

My question is, when i want to create a trust between 2 forest (domainA.com and domainB.com) i get the following statement:

I know i need to make a forest to forest trust but i cant. It will ask me to do a realm trust or a Trust with Windows domain. Now, when i try to do that latter, i get error or "specified domain cannot be contacted".

I have read online about this being an issue with the DNS and firewall. But im not able to find any clear guides or instructions on how configure the DNS or firewall to allow for both domains to communicate. Like i said before, i don't have much experience on networking. Any help would be appreciated. Also, if you want some information from me, please ask and in a detailed way. As i state, still learning here.

Thanks

Sharing VLANs with VMWare

We have an existing VMware 3.5 environment where the vlans are all set up for Management, VMotion etc.

my client is moving away from VMware and switching to Hyper v long term.

There is an immediate requirement to deploy 2012 servers. ESX 3.5 environment does not support.

Two DL385 G6 servers that are certified for 2012 have been found and I was wondering if there would be any problem in using the existing VLANs for the similar services Management, Live migration etc for the creation of a temporary Hyper V failover cluster until we have designed the new Hyper V clusters to replace ESX 3.5.

Use Windows Server Backup for Exchange 2010 on Hyper-V

We have a Win 2008r2 server with Exchange 2010 on Hyper-V. We use Windows Server Backup from 2008r2 to do Copy Backups of the whole server. But that will not restore Exchange. Can I run WSB from within Exchange to do a full backup that will be able to restore Exchange?

I started to try that yesterday but during the 'consistency check' Exchange stopped performing, mail stopped and I stopped the backup. I don't know how long it will take or if Exchange will start again after the consistancy check. I am the accidental techie.

Or should I use the free Veeam? We are a non-profit with no money.

Thanks,

Kevin

I have read lots of threads but am still not clear about the Hyper-V part, including:

Hi,

In the last few days or so we have been experiencing failed backups. The backup fails at 'Check VSS snapshot and consistency' in BackupAssist 7.4.5 software. Below is the error message:

The backup operation stopped before completing.
Detailed error: ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has occurred: (0x80042336)
The writer experienced a partial failure. Check the component level error state for more information.
A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation failed. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for more information.
ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has occurred: (0x80042336)
The writer experienced a partial failure. Check the component level error state for more information.

We are running a HYPER-V 2008 R2 Server with two virtual machines - SBS 2011 Standard and Server 2008 R2.

I ran 'VSSADMIN list writer' in a command window on the host machine (HYPER-V Server 2008 R2) and there was an error:

Writer name: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer'
Writer Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}
Writer Instance Id: {3cd8204b-5f3a-4e5b-b7e8-b605c26ad538}
State: [5] Waiting for completion
Last error: Unexpected error

Using Windows Backup on the Hyper-V server also generates the same error message.

We would be grateful for any advice.

Mark

Hi,

Since we installed the new version of Data Protection Manager 2012 R2, we get issue messages while backing up Windows Server 2008 R2 or 2012 R2 virtual machines.

At every backups we will find the followings in Event Viewer:

Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      server01.domain.local
Description:
The disk signature of disk 2 is equal to the disk signature of disk 0.

This last line is repeated for each disk.

Sometime this line is preceded by the following:

Log Name:      System

Event ID:      1
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      server01.domain.local

Unexpected failure. Error code: D@01010004

The registry is growing up with remaining entries under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2

May someone help me? Thank you

Hi All,

Since many days i am facing an issue at customer site to backup Hyper-V virtual machines. We have 2 hyper-v win 2012 server in fail over cluster with 20 VMs. When ever we try to take backup through windows server backup, the backup get fails with below error in event viewer.

Event ID:16387

Writer Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer experienced some error during snapshot creation.  More info:  .

Event ID:521

The backup operation that started at '‎2013‎-‎12‎-‎17T11:00:52.838000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '0x8100010C'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Any one faced this issue please helppp

Is it possible to add hyper-V fail over clustering afterwards?

Hi,

We are testing Windows 2012R2 Hyper-V using only one stand alone host without fail over clustering now with few virtual machines. Is it possible to add fail over clustering afterwards and add second Hyper-V node and shared disk and move virtual machines there or do we have to install both nodes from scratch?

The RemoteFX Manager process stopped working and has been restarted

I'm seeing the above warning in the Event Log of a new Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 installation but can't find any information on what's causing it.

It references a VM that seems to be working fine and continues to log the same event even when the VM is shutdown.

The VM did have a RemoteFX GPU assigned to it but I've tried removing that as well but still no reduction in the Events being logged.

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers for now

Using Powershell to assign VHD file to VM on Volume GUID path doesn't work anymore...

$

Our team has kept scripts to automate our creation of VM machines.  Since our VM environment is clustered, we have always used Volume GUID paths to point to the paths of the VHD and/or VHDX files for each of the VMs.

Since the GUID volume name contains a question mark, we've always gotten around this by doing a substitution of the question mark with a period.

For example, to create a VHD file, we have always done this.... The $vhdPath variable is the GUID volume path, which is identified earlier in the script.

New-VHD -Path $vhdPath.Replace("?",".") -Fixed -SizeBytes 70GB

After this is created, the script goes ahead and creates the VM

New-VM -MemoryStartupBytes 4GB -Name $VMName -SwitchName $SwitchName -Path $deviceid -VHDPath $vhdPath.Replace("?",".")

The $deviceid is the full GUID volume path, and the $vhdPath variable is the full GUID volume path, along with the VHD file name.

However, as we're trying to build VMs using Hyper-V 2012 R2, it appears that 2nd command, the creation of the VM itself, does not work anymore.

It complains that 'The network path was not found'.  It seems to think, now that I changed the ? to a ., it thinks it's a UNC path of some sort.

However, the 1st command, the creation of the VHD file, still works correctly; no complaints there.

I find this really strange as the New-VHD command is successful; as I've verified that the VHD file gets created.

It's only the 2nd part, when trying to create the VM and pointing to the VHD file on the same guid volume path, with the exact same substitution, is when it fails.

This part has always worked when we are using Win 2008R2 Hyper-V and Win 2012 Hyper-V...

Any ideas?

The host machine is running on Windows Server 2012 STD. and two Hyper-v machine running with dynamic HDD. one hyper-v machine HDD size increase as because of so many file copy in the hyper-v machine. and now i delete this file. But HDD hype-v machine size not reduce. So, how can i reduce the Hyper-v machine size. on that Hyper-v machine Exchange 2010SP3 running. the physical HDD getting space low. So, need to reduce the Hyper-v machine size.

Could you please share your best practices for setting up a new Windows Server 2012 r2 Hyper-V Virtualized AD DC, that will be running on a new WinSrv 2012 r2 host server.   (This will be for a brand new network setup, new forest, domain, etc.)

Specifically, your best practices regarding:

the sizing of non virtual and virtual volumes/partitions/drives,

the use of sysvol, logs, & data volumes/drives on hosts & guests,

RAID levels for the host and the guest(s),

IDE vs SCSI and drivers both non virtual and virtual and the booting there of,

disk caching settings on both host and guests.

Thanks so much for any information you can share.

General Access Denied Error - Hyper-V

$

Hi

We have a Hyper-V 2012 3 node cluster, the VMs are stored on a Server 2012 based 2 node Scale Out File Server.

We created this setup from new in October 2013 and it has generally worked OK since but we do get the occasional "General Access Denied Error (0x80070005)" when we try to live migrate a virtual machine.  The instructions in the below TechNet article do not work for us - the result indicates success but when we try the Live Migration again we get the same error message.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2249906/en-gb

I have in the past resolved this by removing the virtual machine from Failover Cluster Manager, migrating it via Hyper-V Manager, logging on to the destination Hyper-V host and re-importing it to Failover Cluster Manager from there.

However last night I was doing some system maintenance and went to drain a host via Failover Cluster Manager.  The host had around 20 VMs on it and only two VMs successfully migrated - the other VMs did not migrate and now I cannot move them from that host for love nor money!

The Event Log for FCM indicates they have the "General Access Denied" error.

I have tried the following:

  • Use instructions in above mentioned TechNet article (shows success, but same error happens when I try to Live Migrate)
  • Tried the method I have mentioned above (removing from FCM etc.).  Get the Access Denied message
  • Checking the folder permissions on the "Virtual Machines" folder where XMLs are stored.  Permissions appear OK for all Hyper-V hosts (also checked the VMs VHD permissions)
  • Trying the Live Migration directly on Hyper-V host rather than via a Constrained Delegation scenario
  • Checking Constrained Delegation in AD (seems fine as per when I set it up in October)
  • Checking permissions on the Scale Out File Server

With regards to the Scale Out File Server I have noticed in the past some odd permissions things going on.  I have seen the permissions for the Hyper-V hosts going from (for example) "Full Access" on "This Folder, Subfolders & Files" to random things like " Read/Modify" on "This Folder Only".  Manually changing the permissions back to Full Control resolves the issue, but does not stop it recurring again.

So I'm a bit confused really!  It looks like a mixed basket of permissions issues going on!  Some of our most critical machines are on that host at the moment and they cannot be moved.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Many thanks
