Use Windows Server Backup for Exchange 2010 on Hyper-V

We have a Win 2008r2 server with Exchange 2010 on Hyper-V. We use Windows Server Backup from 2008r2 to do Copy Backups of the whole server. But that will not restore Exchange. Can I run WSB from within Exchange to do a full backup that will be able to restore Exchange?

I started to try that yesterday but during the 'consistency check' Exchange stopped performing, mail stopped and I stopped the backup. I don't know how long it will take or if Exchange will start again after the consistancy check. I am the accidental techie.

Or should I use the free Veeam? We are a non-profit with no money.

Thanks,

Kevin

I have read lots of threads but am still not clear about the Hyper-V part, including:

Hyper-V VMM Service terminated with the following error: Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.

I have a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Host server that has been performing perfectly up until one week ago. This is a lab environment, but it is an important lab for testing deployments of Exchange, SCCM, ADFS, as well as desktop deployment scenarios using ADK 8.1. The point is its an important lab environment for my consulting firm.

The problem: About a week ago I fired up the host server and thevirutal machine manager service will not start. The error is as stated in the post above.

The host is nowhere near out of disk space and the disk is not corrupted. All file checks and disk checks pass with no errors. The files have all been verified for accuracy. The available disk space on the system disk is 40GB. All of the VM Guests and the default machine configuration files as well as Vhdx files are stored on a separate disk that check out good as well with over 400GB free space.

The event log shows the error posted above and the only other error in the event log is Event ID: 46

\Device\HarddiskVolume7

Volmgr - Crash dump initialization failed.

Disk 7 has nothing to do with the Windows Server installation or Hyper-V files.

The only other thing I did on this machine is create 2 separate partitions on a separate disk and install Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 as a dual-boot option. The problem did seem to occur after doing this but not immediately. I also, cannot make the connection as to why this would have caused the service to fail. The Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 files are on a completely different disk with the BCD boot options being the only configuration change that was made to the system disk or C:\Root drive.

Please help! It's important to get this fixed as soon as possible.

Hyper-V Failover Cluster Node Corruption

Dear All,

Some of my nodes are showing abnormal behavior.  They are restarting every now and then.  I had updated the cluster nodes, but all updates were OS specific, there was nothing specific with respect to hardware update.  It started happening when I pushed Endpoint Protection client to the nodes.  Can it cause abnormal restart?

I have analyzed crash dumps and find out that following is causing the crash:

page_fault_in_nonpaged_area (nxup.sys)

anyone has any idea about this?

Thanks in advance.

Moving Virtual Machines from One Cluster to Another

Dear All,

1.   What is the best method of moving virtual machines from one Hyper-V Failover Cluster based on Windows Server 2008/R2 to another on the same domain?

2.   What precautions one must take while migrating virtual machines?

Thanks.

No longer able to view virtual machine from Hyper-V Manager

From the Windows 2008 R2 host machine, I can run the Hyper-V Manager and 'connect' to the Virtual Machine.  The window pops up with nothing but a gray background (clearly the same gray background of the log in screen), but no 'ctrl-alt-delete' prompt and no ability to log in.  This was previously working fine.

Note that I can still make a Remote Desktop connection to the Virtual Machine and it works fine.

Thanks.

How to Fix a Corrupted Hyper-V VHD File

Can't connect to Kaspersky Endpoint Security server when it's a VM

Hello,

I'm pretty much at the end of my rope here and am hoping someone will have some suggestions.

We brought up a Kaspersky Endpoint Security demo server for testing. This is a physical server and connects to off site pc's at our stores that are not connected to our corp LAN. We set up port forwarding thru the firewall and it was working just fine.

Now the problem. We're moving forward with the production implementation and we decided to bring up a 2008 R2 Hyper-V server and install the Endpoint Security server on a VM. We brought up the server and now the remote client will not talk to the new VM server. The server ip is the same and nothing has changed on the firewall. If I re-connect the old demo server, the client can connect immediately.

The Hyper-V server is setup with 4 nics. One nic is setup for the management network and one is setup for the External virtual switch. The VM is connected to the virtual switch and is the only VM on the server. The connection seems to be ok since I have internet access on the VM. I have also tried disabling Windows firewall on the VM with no luck.

So now I'm pretty sure that the Hyper-V server is blocking or not allowing the port traffic thru, but after hours of research I'm also pretty sure that it's not supposed to and that it's supposed to allow all traffic thru to the VM, so I'm stuck now.

I already talked to Kaspersky tech support and they said the same thing, but apparently, we're the only ones on the planet that have this problem.

Any help would be appreciated. If not, I guess we can just scrap the VM approach.

Unable to create a VM from Disk2VHD image - 2008 R2

Hi,

I have created a VHD using Disk2VHD tool and it is unable to boot. I have attached the VHD to new virtual machine and VM is keep getting the start-up repair wizard. When the VM booted for first time it displays a error mentioning that C:\Windows is corrupted and need to run chkdsk.

I have run chkdsk /f option and it has corrected few errors. but the issue remains as it is. Further, I have run following commands from command prompt when the VM is booted from Windows server 2008 R2 DVD.

bootrec/fixmbr

bootrec/fixboot

bootrec/scanos - total identified windows installations: 0

bootrec/rebuildbcd - total identified windows installations: 0

nothing worked for me and I tried using hyper-v 2.0 and 3.0 as well. same issue appear every time.

another thing I have noticed is that the physical servers doesn't show a "System Reserved" partition when creating the VHD image. So, the VHD has only the C: partition.

Could anyone give me a solution for this...??

Hyper-V Replica Networking question

Hi

Just looking for some best practice guidance here, I have two standalone hyper-v hosts in my HQ (192.168.50.x) one replicating to the other then in my DR site I have extended replica to here (172.16.10.x) if and when i failover a VM from HQ with an IP of (192.168.50.x) it is not contactable in the DR subnet, what is best practice here as i dont want to have to manually change the IP of the app server to suit new DR site, just to add i dont run vlans as i dont have any switches capable of that, what are my options so it seamless failover and failback?

Thanks in advance

Create Virtual NICs of a Teamed Interface

$

Dear All,

I am building a Hyper-V Failover Cluster.  I have created a team (two physical nics) which I plan to only use for Cluster Communication, Heartbeat and Live Migration.  I have following questions:

1.  How to create virtual NICs out of this teamed interface and assign them to respective networks?

2.  Do Cluster Communication, Heartbeat and Live Migration Networks have to be on different subnet or they can be part of the same subnet as well?

3.  In both cases that is same subnet or different subnet, how would networks be assigned?

Thanks in advance.

Failed to register service principal name for Hyper-V Event 14050

Hi,

we have a domain with several Hyper-V hosts, clustered & standalone. All works fine. Now i have installed additonal Hyper-V host, which generates every 2 min. the event 14050:

Failed to register the service principal name 'Hyper-V Replica Service'.

Failed to register the service principal name 'Microsoft Virtual System Migration Service'.

Failed to register the service principal name 'Microsoft Virtual Console Service'.

No problem, take google and fix the problem.. no way..

The beavior is very strange, the errors also come up if the SPN's where manually added to the computer account.

Only one google hit after hours of searching says one guy has disabled the firewall and it works.

Now this is what i have done.. no change.. events coming up. So i stop the firewall service and it works!! The SPN's are successfuly registered! After the service is restarted, no more event 14050 coming up. After reboot same shit, events coming up again until the firewall servive is fully stopped and after successfully registering restarted.

But why?? Firewall rules are correctly implemented.

In summary:

Standart; does not register SPN

Firewall disabled; does not register SPN

Firewall service stopped; does register SPN successfuly

Anyone got a hint? Any help will be appreciate!!

Strange Errors Creating a VM

$

I'm getting some odd behavior when trying to create a VM.  This started on a W2K12 box but I decided to upgrade it to R2 on the off chance that the problems I am seeing were being caused by something wrong in the OS.  The problems persisted.

I am just trying to create a VM.  Initially, I created it with the standard dynamically sizing 126G drive but I changed that to a fixed size 126G drive when I couldn't load an OS.  I am getting 2 basic errors:

1) After booting to the OS CD (2K8R2), I tell it to install and it errors with "Windows installation encountered an unexpected error.  Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the Installation".  I tried copying the ISO file to a couple of different locations on the off chance that I had a disk issue.  No dice.

2) If I persist, it will get past the above error and it will present me with a list of OS editions to choose from.  After choosing, it asks what partition I want it installed on.  I select the 126G partition (the only one).  It chews on that for a bit and does nothing.  If I click "Next" again, it errors telling me that it requires at least 7G of free disk space to continue.

I have never seen this behavior before.  What can be causing it?

Thanks

Bert

Hyper-V 2012 R2 generation 2 VM corrupted system partition after restart

$

Hi

We have a cluster running on Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V feature.

One VM that has Windows 2012 R2 Standard OS installed (generation 2) was corrupted via restart.

VM has 3 virtual disks (VHDX) - first for system (dynamic size), second for SQL_data (fixed size) , third for SQL_logs (fixed size)

Yesterday, I restarted VM and VM didn't come up, I got error

- 'Boot Failed. Windows Boot Manager'

- 'Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device'

Looked all three VHDX we noticed that the first one (system) was corrupted - partition and MBR are gone inside VHDX.

Second and third one are OK, we can mount them and access all data on it.

It looks like on first VHDX (system with SQL 2014 installed) partition was corrupted, so we can't do repair because it's says unknown partition.

There were no updates applied to VM, corrupted partition is 40GB size (dynamical) with 18GB of data used.

This is first generation 2 VM that we have, all others are generation 1 without any problems.

Can anyone please explain us, how can this happened, since we did nothing inside VM, also cluster reports no errors, checking VHDX looks fine, just partition inside got corrupted.

We like to find out what happened, before we deploy more Win2012 R2 VM (gen2) in production envirionment.

Thank you in advance

Regards

Mike

I would like to install Hyper-V Server 2012 on my Dell PE1950 with PERC 6/i controller

Booting from CD, Just after 'install now' it complains that a mass storage driver is missing, and no matter what I download from dell via USB stick, it says no driver found

I can install W2K3 R2, W2K8R2 and W2K12 R2 & XenServer without issue - its the darn Hyper-V server that complains

Any thoughts?

NIC Teaming in Hyper-V Host or Guest with a single VM?

$

Hi!

I run Hyper-V on a physical Win Server 2012 R2. I have a single Server 2012 R2 Guest VM but multiple physical network cards. Now I would like to allow my single VM to make use of those multiple NICs in order to increase bandwidth.

To achieve this, is it ok to create a NIC team in the Hyper-V host or do I need to create the team inside the guest VM (instead of in the host) to make use of multiple physical NICs from inside this VM?

Thanks in advance.

Question for "Hyper-V replica" and "replica server"

On the replica server, is it possible to have and operate other VMs, that are not replicas to existing VMs ?

Forcing replication to a specific NIC

Is it possible to force Hyper-V to use a spesific network interface for replication traffic? I have a dedicated "live migration" interface connecting all hosts together, but HV keeps using  "management interface", that has far less bandwidth, for replication. Kind of irritating.

Gleb.
